Chapter 23 – A Stag Night and A Wedding Alex sat in her comfortable armchair watching Annie as she ironed her dress ready for the wedding. “Are you alright, Alex? You’re lookin’ a bit pensive!” She took a sip from her wine glass before answering, “I’m just thinking about what Ray might have planned for Gene.” “Shouldn’t worry ‘bout it, the Guv’ can handle ‘imself!” “I know he can and I know Sam will make sure Gene gets back to the hotel in one piece. Just a bit apprehensive, I suppose, you know what Ray’s like, Gene will probably end up with his body dyed blue, and he won’t find out until he removes his clothes. What did they do to Sam?” “Well, they got ‘im extremely drunk, blindfolded ‘im, cuffed ‘is ‘ands, put ‘im in a taxi, drove ‘im around for a while so ‘e didn’t know where ‘e were an’ told ‘im they’d left ‘im in the middle of a field near Prestwich with a bull for company. They also told ‘im that someone would be back for ‘im later. Finally, as dawn were breakin’, Gene pulls ‘im to ‘is feet an’ takes the blindfold off, ‘e’d been sat in Gene’s back garden all night. ‘Onestly, I were cryin’ with laughter when ‘e told me, see ‘bout quarter o’ an ‘our through the ceremony, ‘e starts sniffling in the church, ends up on our wedding night inhaling friars balsam with a towel over ‘is ‘ead.” Annie laughed again as the memories came flooding back, “all I could think about were consummatin’ our marriage but ‘e were so ill ‘e ‘ad to spend the night in the spare bed!” Alex giggled; she only hoped that whatever they did do to Gene wouldn’t indispose him when they were meant to be consummating their marriage. ************* “An’ you are not, I repeat, not goin’ to strip me naked and tie me to the nearest lamppost, do I make myself clear!” Gene growled as the fourth round of drinks was bought over to the table by Luigi. “Weren’t thinkin’ of the nearest lamppost, Guv’.” Ray suggested, “we’d take you ‘ome an’ leave you there!” Gene looked unimpressed, pursing his lips in his usual pout as Ray then carried on, “Besides we’re gonna leave that to Chris, think he deserves the bein’ left naked somewhere scenario, sure that little Essex girlie of ‘is will just love that!” Chris looked nonplussed at Ray’s remark, deciding that he was never going to get married, well, not whilst Ray was around anyway. “Mmm, well whatever it is you ‘ave got planned then I ‘ope you realise Tyler,” Gene said, turning his attention to Sam, “that I will ‘old you personally responsible should I be missing any of my faculties or limbs, I intend to be in one piece when I bed my wife tomorrow night, thank you all very much!” “Don’t worry, Guv’.” Ray sniggered, “you’ll be in one piece!” He looked to Sam, Viv and Donald, gesturing to them that what they had planned was going to be good enough. “Where you goin’?” Ray watched Gene get to his feet. “Well, whilst you Nancy’s are catching up with me,” he drained his pint glass and slammed it on the table, “I’m just going to make a phone call!” He made his way to the corner of the restaurant and asked if he could borrow the telephone, Luigi passed it over to him. “Is there anything I can do, Signor Hunt!” The little Italian worried, he certainly didn’t want to see any harm come to his friend. “I’ll be fine, Luigi, thanks. Ray knows better than t’ completely ‘umiliate me, ‘e’ll ‘ave someat planned but now’t too much!” “Ok, Signor Hunt! You know where I am if you need me.” “Thanks,” he dialled the number and waited for the telephone to be picked up the other end, “Hi, Alex?” “Hi, Gene, what’s wrong? Is everything ok?” “Everythin’s fine. I’ve read ‘em all the riot act, they know they’ll get what for, when I get back t’ work if they do do anythin’, anyhow! I just phoned to see ‘ow you were, needed to ‘ear your voice. 2 o’clock is a long time off, can’t wait t’ see you tomorrow!” “It will soon be here. I’m good, a little worried about you but I’m fine. Annie’s just been telling me what you lot did to Sam, she said they couldn’t consummate their marriage on their wedding night because he was so ill.” “Bols, don’t worry, whatever ‘appens I’ll still make love to ya!” He purred, “that’s the least of your worries, if I were you I’d be more concerned with ‘ow drunk I were when I get you up to that room of ours!” He heard her giggle before reluctantly saying, “I’d best get back!” “Ok, Gene. Thanks for phoning, it was good to hear your voice, its going to be weird enough sleeping in our bed alone tonight, but you’ve just made it a little less daunting! Love you, Gene!” “Love you too, Alex! Bye.” He heard the phone go dead and replaced the handset he was holding. “Thanks, Luigi,” he motioned toward the phone as he walked back to the table and the assembled group of friends. “These mine,” he asked, noting that there were two full pints in his place. “Luigi, another round,” he picked up the first pint and downed it, “with whisky chasers this time if you please,” he picked up the second and finished that too, “come on, you big Jessie’s, lets get this party started!” ************ Gene woke up to the sound of the mid morning Saturday traffic rushing around on the streets below the hotel room. A car horn sounded, causing his ears to ring and his head split. He knew he’d been given a damn good send off but, by Christ, his head was a wreck. He really needed to go to the toilet as well. He pulled the covers from over him and sat up putting his hands to his head, that was funny he couldn’t feel his left hand. Blearily, he opened his eyes a chink and took in the sight before him. “Shit! Sam?” Sam strolled out of the bathroom whistling some tune that Gene had never heard in his life before. “You’re awake then?” “Yes, I’m bloody awake, now anyway. Do you wanna tell me what the ‘ell this is?” “It’s a plaster cast!” “I know that, you twonk, what the bloody ‘ell is it doin’ on my arm?” “Erm, long story short. You decided to do a bit of a dance on one of Luigi’s tables to Jean Genie, promptly fell off and well, had to get you to A & E, you’ve broken your wrist!” “She’s gonna bloody kill me!” Sam started nodding his head, “yeah, probably!” “What the ‘ell am I gonna do? The weddings in … in …, where’s me watch?” Sam looked at his, “the weddings in 2 and a half hours!” “’Ave you told ‘er yet?” Sam shook his head, “wanted to see what you’d say first!” “Ok, lets think ‘bout this. I’ll get washed up first and then we’ll ‘ave to get Donald up ‘ere, t’ see what ‘e suggests ‘bout me suit. At least I’m not parading meself through a church like you were, eh, Sammy boy?” “No, Gene, you were too kind to me, letting me sit in your back garden all night, thinking there was some bull eyeing me up and I had to keep still.” “We could’ve stripped you but it were February, I put me foot down on that one for ya!” “Thanks. Now you’re not gonna be able to get that plaster wet so we’ll have to tape something over it.” Sam found a couple of carrier bags and tied them around Gene’s plaster as best he could. “Ok, your set!” “Thanks Sam, after all I could be wakin’ up in some unknown seaside town with a £20 note strapped to me privates!” Sam laughed, “what’s so funny?” “When Alex spoke to me last week she asked me not to let Ray do that to you. She said that it would have to be a twenty because of covering you up.” Gene shook his head as he walked into the bathroom. ‘Good old, Bolly,’ he thought, ‘always thinkin’ ‘bout me.’ Within 10 minutes he was ready and dressed only in his boxers he walked back into the bedroom. Donald had now joined them and he and Sam were talking quietly near the door. On seeing that Gene had come out of the bathroom Donald came into the room, “are you planning on wearing them for your bride?” “Yeah?” “She’s a little classier than that Gene, here go and put these on, she’ll love them!” Gene went back into the bathroom and changed into the boxers that he had been given. The black silk felt wonderful against his skin, Donald was right Alex was definitely going to love them. “That’s better!” Came the response when he joined the other two men in the bedroom. “So, what the ‘ell do you suggest I do about this?” Gene questioned Donald. He began dressing himself as best he could, putting on his socks and trousers to the fine black woollen Italian suit that Luigi had managed to get his hands on, via a member of his family. He’d got himself a pair of black Chelsea boots and was able to slip his feet into them without much of a problem. Next he tackled the light grey cotton shirt, pulling it on. He was surprised that he was able to fasten up the sleeves with the cufflinks he’d bought, they matched the wedding rings. He knotted a maroon tie and fastened it in place taking a quick look in the mirror to make sure it was straight. “Right, lets try the jacket,” he pushed his right arm through the arm and tried the same with the other but, he realised, it wasn’t going to go on over the cast. “Shit!” “We could cut the arm?” Donald suggested. “It’s a £350 suit, I don’t think so, Don!” Sam walked toward him and pulled the jacket around his arm, “maybe we could,” he stood back, the jacket fastened but hooked under Gene’s arm, “no, that’s not gonna work!” Donald tried next, pulling the jacket over his arm instead. “That’s better!” “How the bloody ‘ell am I supposed t’ put the ring on her finger trussed up like a Christmas turkey?” Sam and Donald looked at one another, ‘a little too rehearsed that’ Gene thought as Sam went to the door, retrieving Gene’s black coat; Donald taking Gene’s jacket off his shoulders. Sam held Gene’s coat for him so that he was able to put his arms through their respective holes. He positioned it on his back and Gene looked at himself in the mirror once more, not perfect but it would have to do. “Alex said she always liked t’ see me in this coat,” he said to no one in particular. At least it matched his trousers. “Time Sam, please!” “It’s 1.17, just enough time to have a drink and be on our way!” He poured a shot of whisky into each of the three waiting glasses, passing them around when he was ready. “I’d like to raise a toast, to Gene, for being the best mate a man could have and to Alex, for being able to put up with him and his moods!” He smiled as he took the shot, clinked glasses with the other two and threw it down his throat. “To Gene and Alex,” Donald continued, “I’ve never seen a pair better suited,” he clinked his glass against Gene’s before doing as Sam had done. Gene put his glass in the air like a salute. “Thanks!” He stated before his shot disappeared too. “Suppose we better get on then Sam!” They said their farewells and left Donald in the room. He picked up Gene’s jacket, put it on a hanger and wrapped it within the suit cover. He pulled out Alex’s envelope and left the room for the bridal suite leaving housekeeping to sort out and clean. Gene and Sam got to the registry office with 10 minutes to spare. Walking in they were greeted by Annie, she looked at the coat and asked a question with her face. She saw the trousers but where was the jacket. “Don’t ask!” Gene warned as he walked into the ‘Yellow Room’, and greeted his mum and other guests, leaving Sam to tell Annie what had happened. “I’ll ‘ave to go tell her,” Annie said scuttling from the room and down the corridor. She rushed into the room that Alex was calmly sat waiting in, with Charley. “You are never goin’ to believe this!” “What?” “Gene’s broken ‘is wrist. Apparently, he decided to get up on a table and start dancin’ on it; then, in his drunken state, fell off! He knocked ‘imself out too, so Sam and Ray ‘ad to get ‘im to A & E in order to get it plastered up!” “Oh god!” Alex sighed, shaking her head and putting her head down, of all the things! “’E’s wearin’ his black coat though, if that’s any consolation, so he still looks ok!” Alex looked up to Annie and smiled, “thanks for letting me know!” The officiator came into the room and asked Alex if she was ready. She nodded her acceptance noticing Annie quickly retreat from the room; Charley passed her the bouquet before walking into the corridor and waiting. Alex gave herself a once over in the mirror and decided that she was ready; she walked from the room and followed Charley down the corridor and into the ‘Yellow Room’. Gene looked back to the door when he noticed that the officiator had made his entrance and patiently waited for the first glimpse of his bride. Charley came in first her blonde hair had been plaited and varying pink coloured rose buds had been threaded through. Her dress was simple and carried a floral print, she wore white ankle socks with lace around the cuff and pink ballet pumps completed her outfit. He was proud of his little girl and showed her with his beaming smile. All eyes went to Alex as she stood in the doorway waiting to make her way to her betrothed. She smiled at him when she noticed his attention was now on her before crossing the short distance between them. Gene couldn’t believe his eyes, she was so beautiful and he was resolved to tell her as soon as she joined him. Her make-up was smokier than her usual blue and her features were prominent with the way her hair had been clipped back. She too had rose buds in her hair but these were white and wispy gypsophilia was interlaced as well. She wore a white gypsy dress; the neckline fell over her shoulders leaving them, her upper chest and her neck completely bare. The bodice nipped in at the waist as the skirt flowed down to her mid calf, he could see the pale outline of her covered upper arm and shin from her knee where the lacy top fabric was only visible. Her legs were clad in the sheerest of white tights and she wore white stilettos. Her bouquet was made up of the same white roses and gypsophilia with a few lilies thrown in for good measure. By the time Gene had realised where he was and had come back to earth with a bump, Alex had joined him in front of the officiator and the ceremony began. Within 20 minutes they were wed, within an hour, after the photo’s had been taken, they were on their way to Luigi’s. “Can I just say that you look absolutely stunnin’, Mrs Hunt,” Gene said as he took her left hand in his and kissed it just above her index finger. “You clear took my breath away when I saw you standin’ in that doorway waitin’ to join me!” She smiled up at him as he put his arm around her now shawl covered shoulders. “Mind you, I can’t wait to get you out of that dress, pretty though it is!” “Mmm, and even though you couldn’t wear your jacket, I’m glad you had that coat of yours on, can’t wait to get you out of that! What on earth possessed you to get on a table and start dancing?” “I don’t know!” He shrugged. “But at least I’m not missin’ anythin’ in the body department, an’ I ‘aven’t got a cold. I’m still goin’ to be able to perform later on!” “Providing you don’t have too much to drink, that is!” “I’m not intendin’ to, I ‘ad a good enough send off last night. I’m goin’ to make sure that I treat my wife good, from the word go an’ that starts now!” He drew her into his embrace and kissed her, tracing her lips with his tongue, waiting to be allowed to travel within her mouth when she opened it for him. The car stopped and they both realised that they were outside Luigi’s. He instructed her to wait where she was as he got out and walked to her side of the car, opening the door and picking her up in his arms. “Gotta do this right, ‘aven’t I?” He walked them down the steps and into the restaurant to jubilant applause and showers of confetti and rice, setting her down when they were in the middle of the room. Luigi came forward and kissed them both, before handing them a glass of champagne each. A toast was signalled by Sam and the festivities began, Luigi and his staff serving the food and wine, whilst everyone chatted pleasantly about the wedding and how Gene had come to break his wrist. Once dinner was over and the plates were cleared away, it was time for the customary speeches. Gene stood up and clinked his glass, “I’d just like to say a few words. Firstly, thank you all for comin’ and witnessin’ this happy occasion, it’s so wonderful to see so many of our friends and family ‘ere ‘elpin’ us celebrate, especially me mam and me daughter. Thanks. An’ to Luigi for puttin’ on this fine spread we’ve ‘ad today. An’ to Donald for puttin’ up the fine room we’ll be enjoyin’ later!” Laughter filled the room as he looked down to Alex. He waited for the outburst to die down before continuing. “To Sam and Ray for getting’ me to the ‘ospital an’ for …” The door was flung open and in walked a woman dressed in a nurse’s uniform. “What the blazes …?” “Mr Hunt,” the woman said, “I fear that there has been a mistake, we took another look at your x-ray, and your wrist is fine!” Confusion ensued as everyone looked at their neighbours. “Raymondo, a word?” “Guv’?” “I’d hate to think that this ‘as all been some bloody wind up!” Ray shrugged, smiling with mockery written all over his face. “Gotcha!” “Why you …” he stopped himself, turning to see Alex hysterically laughing. “I don’t think this is much of a laughing matter, Mrs Hunt!” She tried to stop herself as she had that day he’d told the office about the dog that had exploded, but she couldn’t. “I just keep thinking of the photos, you having to wear that coat with the plaster visible!” He had to admit it was funny; Ray had got him good and proper. “I knew there were someat a bit fishy when you,” he pointed at Sam, “an’ Donald were whisperin’ in the corner earlier on!” He laughed, looking back to the nurse, “does that mean it can come off then?” She nodded, and whilst everyone talked and laughed about the events leading up to that point, the cast was skilfully removed from Gene’s arm. He took his place once again and raised his glass. “Where was I … oh yeah! An’ finally thanks to Alex, because even though she were against the idea of us getting’ together she eventually allowed me to come into ‘er life and love ‘er the way she deserves, an’ for ‘er lovin’ me back! Thank you for becomin’ me wife, Alex, I love you!” He sat down and kissed her, finally letting her go as Sam clinked his glass. “When I was deciding what to say I came up with many things that I could’ve shared with everyone here. About the time I first arrived in Gene’s office and him giving me the ‘King of the Jungle’ speech, or the time when he found me strapped to a bed, naked, and allowed Annie to walk in and see me like that!” Sam looked at Annie, noticing her cheeks colour at his remark, she looked so adorable when she went shy on him. “You see, Gene and I didn’t get on too well when we first met, a bit like Alex and himself by all accounts. He has this knack of being able to rile his DI’s in order that they end up fighting against him. However, there were times when he relied on my knowledge as I know he did Alex too. And when that happens you get to know a bit of the real Gene, the man inside the ‘Manc Lion’ and you realise that he’s as mixed up and vulnerable as you are! I can honestly say I love this man,” “Steady on, Tyler!” Gene interjected. “Love this man as if he were me own brother.” He watched Gene nod his head in agreement, “I’m glad that I’ve had the opportunity to know this man and although he’s sadly missed up in Manchester I know that if anyone of us had a problem he would do anything he could to make sure that problem went away. So, I’d like you all to raise your glasses with me … to Gene and Alex!” “Gene and Alex,” everybody chorused. Alex stood up, Gene took her hand and as she looked down to him he questioned her motive. She smiled before she began addressing everyone around her. “I hope you don’t mind, but I’d like to say something. I know it’s not traditional for the bride to say anything but I feel that I should considering I have no actual family here, apart from Gene now that is!” She was beginning to babble, she pulled herself back in. “I’m extremely lucky, unbeknown to me this man has always been there for me, even as a child I knew he was there but I could never see him or touch him. And when I finally met him I dismissed him, but over the months up until my very dear friend’s death,” she noticed Gene and Ray look at one another, “he always managed to stay with me, even if it was in spirit alone. When I was at my lowest point he was there for me, helping me to stand up again and face the world head on, he began to show me his capacity for love and in return I found that I was falling in love with him. He even courted me properly because he said he wanted to do the right thing. “When I miscarried earlier on this year he made me realise that even though it was a really low point for both of us he still wanted me, to take care of me and love me, I’d never had that before. His actions helped to cement our relationship and I knew then that we would be together forever. This is the first step along that road and hopefully soon we will take our second.” She raised her glass. “To us, Gene, and to our future!” He joined her, “to our future!” They clinked their glasses and drank. Music started playing and Gene took her hand leading her out into the centre of the room. This was his song to her, “This were on the radio in me flat when I went to 2007, and it made me think of you immediately!” He whispered to her. She listened to Billy Joel’s soothing words as the melody carried them around the room in each other’s arms. She kissed him, she’d known that today was going to be perfect and he’d just made her realise by how much. **************** When they eventually arrived back at the hotel they quickly made their way to their suite. The perfume from the vases of flowers that adorned ever surface in the suite hit their noses as they walked through the door, Donald had told Gene that he would dress the room up but he’d had no idea that he was going to go to the extent that he had. Champagne sat chilling in an ice bucket and a covered platter held delicacy’s that he didn’t recognise but he’d try all the same, ‘but not right now’ he thought, ‘there’s something I’ve got to do first.’ He pulled Alex by her hand and walked into the bedroom, “Already, Gene?” She asked. “Not quite, there’s something I wanted to give you first, oh and someat I want t’ discuss.” “Ok, what do you want to discuss?” “My promotion!” “So, you weren’t pulling the Super’s leg. You are going to be promoted?” He nodded, “I’ll only take the job though if you’re totally ‘appy ‘bout it and I still want to ‘ave me ‘and in, ‘ands on like.” “Who would be my immediate superior?” “Tyler! Spoke to ‘im an’ Annie ‘bout it just after they arrived Thursday. So, what do you think?” “I think it’s great, when do you start?” “When we get back from honeymoon!” She got up from her seat and flung herself into his arms, genuinely happy for him. “I’m so pleased for you,” she kissed him. “What did you want to give me?” He lent back on the bed and picked up a present. She opened it in haste wanting to see what he’d got her. The silver of the frame sparkled as she pulled it free of the paper and took in the portrait that was now in her hands. She traced the lines of the eyes, nose and mouth, a lone tear falling down her cheek as she continued to move over the picture. “If it’s not quite right we can get it sorted out!” “Gene, it’s perfect. It’s her, it’s my Molly! Thank you so much, there’s nothing in the world that you could have given me that would’ve been more perfect.” “I aim to please,” he said, using his thumb to wipe away the visible tear track. “So what have you got me, you little minx! Thought I were the only wit’ secrets!” “We’re not supposed to have secrets, are we?” She joked, reaching behind herself and picking up the envelope and presenting him with it. ‘For Gene’ was written on the front. He opened it and pulled out the letter that was inside. She decided to go and pour them a glass of champagne each as he began to read. My dearest Gene For the last few weeks I have had a song in my head that was in one of my favourite films in the future. It totally sums up what you mean to me and why I love you. I wanted to write it down, as you are now aware of listening to me when I sing in the shower I am not a good singer, I’m not even a bad singer, I’m a terrible singer. And if I had the technology for you to be able to hear Shania Twain sing it for you then I would do anything to be able to do that, but seeing as it hasn’t technically been written yet, not until 1999, there’s not much I can do. ‘You’ve got a way with me, somehow you got me to believe, in everything that I could be, I’ve gotta say, you’ve really got a way. You’ve got a way it seems, you gave me faith to find my dreams, you’ll never know just what that means, Can’t you see, you’ve got a way with me. It’s in the way you want me, it’s in the way you hold me, the way you show me just what love’s made of, it’s in the way we make love. You’ve got a way with words, you get me smiling even when it hurts, there’s no way to measure what your love is worth, I can’t believe the way you get through to me. It’s in the way you want me, it’s in the way you hold me, the way you show me just what love’s made of, it’s in the way we make love. Oh how I adore you like no one before you, I love you just the way you are. It’s in the way you want me, it’s in the way you hold me, the way you show me just what love’s made of, it’s in the way we make love. It’s just the way you are.’ I love you very much, more than I think I will be ever be able to express whether with words or physically. But I think this goes someway toward you understanding how I feel. I never want we have to end and I believe that we are soul mates. I’ve never believed in the existence of the phenomenon until now, after experiencing it for myself. Never leave me; I know I would truly die if you did. All my love now and forever Alex xxx P.S. Look at the other bit of paper, I think you’ll know what it is as soon as you see it! Alex had rejoined him as he sat and finished reading her note. Her heartfelt words tugged at his own heart, tears threatened. He knew instinctively he’d never leave her and he was resolved to let her know exactly that when he was making love to her later on. He took the piece of paper from the back of the note and brought it forward. His heart stopped in his mouth and it gaped open at the news. “You’re pregnant?” She nodded, grinning from ear to ear like a Cheshire cat. “’Ow, when, why didn’t you say anythin’ sooner?” He grabbed at her pulling her onto his lap. She played along putting her arms around his neck and looked at him in mock disgust. “As to how, I really don’t think I need to explain,” she taunted. “You told me you were ‘avin’ that coil thin’ out a couple day ago!” “Sorry, I got it removed about three months ago, just before we went up to Manchester actually!” “Why didn’t you say anythin’?” “I just wanted things to take a natural course, and I didn’t want you worrying more than was absolutely necessary. I felt this way I could just take things at an easier pace and hopefully get over the first 3 months without too much trouble. I didn’t want to lose another baby!” “So ‘ow far gone are ya?” “Just over 10 weeks, nearly there, in a couple more weeks the morning sickness should be gone and then I go into stage two, eating more and putting on weight, I hope you’re gonna like your wife carrying a few extra pounds?” “I’m always gonna love you, whatever your shape or size, always said you could do wit’ some extra meat on that bottom of yours, anyway. Far too bony! So, we still alright for …” “Making love?” He nodded, “remember what I said last time?” He nodded again, pulling her into his embrace and gently kissing her mouth, her neck, her bare shoulders, his kisses becoming more fervent as their desires increased. He took his time with her, he wanted her to have a night to remember and as they were coming back to earth after their mutual climax he whispered in her ear. “You’re never getting rid of me Bols, I’m for keeps.”
