The four of them sat at the table, Dean trying to take everything in. “Okay, let me just get this straight. So, we beat the Brits, we kicked their psycho, tea swilling asses, and instead of popping champagne and heading to Vegas, we get Lucifer.”
“And you're sure it's him?” Mary asked.
Sam nodded. “Yeah. That's his old vessel, too.”
“How is that possible?”
Sam turned to Liam. “Care to answer that question?”
Liam bit his lip. “Well... Crowley approached me with a proposition.”
Dean crossed his arms. “Oh, this should be good.”
“Mind you I didn't have anything to do with the altering of the spell. That was Crowley.”
“But you knew about it.”
“Not every detail. All I knew was that Crowley wanted to turn Lucy's original vessel into his new cage, but that required very intricate magic that he couldn't do. So technically we were still sending him to a cage.”
“Okay, so how is he loose now?”
The blond shrugged. “Not by himself. Magic like that, is has to be tethered to something. Crowley wanted to turn the tables, be able to control and humiliate Lucy. You know I'm never against that, so the spell was tethered directly to Crowley. The only way he could've gotten loose was for someone else to reverse the flow.”
“Or kill Crowley?” Sam asked.
“Or that, which according to Hess that somehow happened.”
Dean scoffed at that. “Well, that's what Hess said. But Crowley's a freaking cockroach. I'll believe he's gone when I see the body and burn it.”
“We don't need Crowley,” Sam pointed out. “We need Rowena. I mean, she's the one who can slam Lucifer back into the cage.”
“Great. So where is she?” Mary asked.
“I'll call her,” Sam picked up his phone.
It rang for a few minutes, and then they heard Lucifer's voice. “Oh, hey, Sammy. Oh, if you're looking for Rowena, she is presently indisposed. Which is a delicate way of saying, I stomped on her face till the white meat showed, and then set her on fire, just in case. Ah. Gingers. It was messy and screamy, but it had to be done, Sam. I'm about to be a dad. Can't raise the little nipper from a jail cell now, can I? Speaking of, you know where your little pal Castiel is?”
“Oh, you're not gonna be raising anything,” Liam growled.
“Really? Did you suddenly get the juice to stop me without destroying yourself?”
“Didn't need to. I worked smarter not harder.”
“You just love taking things away from me, don't you?”
“Yep.” Liam hung the phone up.
Dean sighed and shook his head. “Now what? We can't kill him and we can't slam his ass back in the cage.”
Sam thought for a moment. “So maybe we play for time. Find Cas and Kelly, keep them moving. If Lucifer can't find them, he can't hurt them.”
Dean looked to his other half. “Since you shoved your hand into this pie, where are they?”
Liam shrugged. “No idea.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean everything happened so fast details weren't exactly discussed. I have enough faith in Cas to get in touch with me if there's a problem.”
“Well there's a problem, only he doesn't know about it. Think he'll take your call?”
“I wouldn't see why not.” Liam pulled his phone out. “You two are the ones who want to hurt the baby, not me.”
“What is the plan for the baby?” Mary asked.
Sam looked over at Liam again. “How sure are you that this kid is gonna call you daddy?”
“Pretty damn sure,” Liam answered. “You saw me speak to him. I didn't do anything to force the issue, but I gave him a choice, kind of like when parents get divorced. I'm a much more comforting presence. That, and Lucy hasn't made any direct contact period since shortly after conception.” He dialed Castiel's number and let it ring. “Huh, no answer.”
Dean ran his hand through his hair. “That doesn't sound good. We need to track him down.”
“All right, then. Kind of always wanted to punch the devil in the face. So how do we find them?” Mary asked.
Sam booted up his laptop. “Alright, look, we know Kelly's gonna have that kid soon. Like, really soon. And according to the lore, whenever a nephilim is born there are signs. Uh, storms, outbreaks of disease, uh, plague of locusts.”
“Things get biblical,” Dean summed it up as he grabbed his tablet.
“Exactly. That much power into the world, whenever and wherever it happens, things get weird.”
Dean looked up at Liam. “Didn't you say your mother went into labor with you during a nasty thunderstorm?”
Liam was at his own laptop. “I was born shortly after the worst storm of that century, yes. There's been a raging thunderstorm wherever I am on my birthday every year since, though I don't know what that has to do with anything.”
Mary picked up another tablet. “So we're looking for something weird.”
Dean nodded. “Yeah. Story of our lives.” About a half hour later he found something. “Hey, listen to this. Two-headed calf was born in Lava Hot Springs, Idaho. That's weird.”
“That is weird,” Mary agreed.
“Yeah, but not our kind of weird,” Sam said. “Look, whatever this thing is, it's gonna be big and bad-”
They were interrupted by the appearance of Crowley. “You rang? Hello, boys.”
“How did you fuck this up?” Liam yelled at him. “I handed you a wet dream on a silver platter. How?”
“Does it matter?” Dean picked up their demon killing knife.
“Dean, wait,” Sam tried to stop him.
“Seriously?” Dean turned to his younger brother in surprise.
“Look, just don't kill him. He worked the cage spell with Rowena. Maybe he can help us.”
“And what if he can't?” Mary asked.
“Well, then we kill him.”
“Works for me,” Liam mumbled.
“Cage spell?” Crowley was a little confused. “Thought you had mother for that.”
“Rowena's dead,” Dean broke the news.
“Really?” Crowley got an odd look on his face.
“Unless Lucy was lying about killing her, yes,” Liam confirmed.
“Funny. I always thought I'd be the one to kill her.”
“Crowley, why did you do it; save Lucifer? What did you want?” Sam asked.
“I wanted to win. I perverted mother's spell because I wanted to win. You have any idea how many people have made a play for my throne over the years? Too damn many. I thought if I could put the Devil on a leash, my own personal nuke, no one would ever dare challenge me again.”
Dean rolled his eyes. “Yeah. That worked out great.”
“All ended with me narrowly escaping death by hiding in a rat.”
“Wait. In an actual rat?” Mary's features scrunched a bit at the thought.
“Wasn't too bad, really. Gave me time to think. You know, I've been focused for so long on keeping my job. Never realized I hate it. All those whining demons, the endless moan of damned souls, the paperwork! I mean, who wants that?”
“You,” Sam answered the rhetorical question.
“Once, maybe.”
“So why are you here?”
“Well, whenever there's a world ending crisis at hand, I know where to place my bets. It's on you, you big, beautiful, lumbering piles of flannel. So if you'll forgive my transgression, I'll make it worth your while.”
“Which means?” Dean asked.
“After we put Lucifer back in his cage, together, I'll seal the gates of hell. You'll never see another demon again, apart from, of course, yours truly.”
“You would do that?” Mary didn't quite believe it.
“Why not? They stab me in the back, I'll happily stab them in the front, the sides, and right up their little black-eyed asses. So we have a deal?”
“We still need to find where Cas took Kelly,” Liam pointed out. “All other plans are pointless until then.”
“Right,” Sam nodded as they went back to their research.
Crowley made himself comfortable in a chair and just watched. “This is what you do when I'm not here? Type?”
“Yep,” Dean said without looking away from the screen.
“Wait a second. I got something,” Sam called out. “Okay, two hours ago, there was a massive power outage in the Pacific Northwest.”
“Sounds like the right kind of weird,” Mary said as they all turned their attention to the article.
Sam nodded. “Oh, yeah. Wait. They tracked the outage to an address in North Cove, Washington, to a house currently being rented by one James Novak.”
“That's Cas. Let's roll,” Dean grabbed his jacket.
“It's about time,” Crowley grumbled as he stood, but Dean stabbed him through the hand with the demon knife.
“Think we're gonna trust you out there after what you pulled? No. You stay here, you sit down, and you shut up,” Dean barked.
“What about him?” Crowley motioned to Liam.
Dean sighed. “One, yeah, he helped you, but it was your idea to begin with. I don't have to ask him why because I already know the answer. Two, I'll keep a close eye on him, but we need our own personal nuke.”
They drove as fast as they could to the secluded cabin. They saw the lights flicker as they approached. “Yeah, this seems like the right place,” Liam commented.
When Dean parked he turned to face his partner. “I meant what I said, I got my eye on you. No tricks.”
“Define a trick.”
Dean was about to start yelling when Castiel came out onto the porch with an angel blade in hand. “Dean?”
“Cas, is this place warded?” Sam asked as they got out of the car.
“Yes, heavily.”
“Heavy enough to stop Lucifer?” Dean asked.
“Lucifer?” the angel was surprised to hear the name.
“He could be right behind us,” Mary said.
Castiel was confused. “I don't... What are you doing here?”
“Saving your ass,” Dean answered simply.
“You and Kelly just taking off was a stupid move. But there's no way we're letting Lucifer get his hands on that kid. It ain't happening,” Sam said.
“You could've at least answered my call so we didn't have to track you down,” Liam grumbled. “I am the one who asked you to look after her, but you didn't even tell me where you were going.”
“I thought that was for the best. Both demons and angels want this child.”
“Yeah, and things changed because Crowley is an idiot.”
“What?” Castiel was even more confused.
“Long story,” Dean sighed. “We'll work through our crap. We always do. But right now, we are here to get you, get Kelly, and get gone.”
The angel frowned. “She can't be moved. She's having a-” They were interrupted by Kelly crying out in pain.
“I'll check on her,” Mary headed into the house.
Liam let his head fall back with a frustrated sigh. “Excellent example of something that would've been nice to know before we got here. You didn't think I'd want to be present for the birth?”
“I thought that would draw too much attention. How much time do we have?”
“We don't know,” Sam answered. “We should double check the warding.” He started moving toward the back of the house, and stopped when he saw what kind of looked like a lightning bolt hanging still in the air. “Cas? What is that?”
“It's a tear in space and time.”
“And that means?” Dean asked.
“It's a doorway to another world.”
“Like Narnia?”
The angel shook his head. “No, through there it's Earth, but different. It's an alternate reality.”
“Like the place we got zapped to where we were, uh, actors on a TV show,” Sam seemed intrigued.
“Oh, yeah. The supernatural wasn't real,” Dean remembered what his brother was talking about. “And you were Polish.”
“You two never did tell me much about that adventure,” Liam sighed.
“Wait, Cas, how did this get here?” Sam asked.
“Well, the child being born, his power, it seems to be puncturing the fabric of our universe.”
“Yeah. And what exactly is on the other side?”
“You don't wanna know.”
“Probably not. But we need to,” Dean insisted.
Castiel shrugged and led them through. They found themselves in some kind of wasteland. “Whoa. Cas, what is this?” Sam asked again.
“As I said, it's Earth. But this Earth is locked in eternal war between heaven and hell. There are armies of angels fighting hoards of demons, and the few humans that remain are caught in between.”
“How do you know that?”
“A friend told me.”
Dean shook sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “Oh, good. Now you're making friends. Alright, on a scale of one to ten, how bad is this?”
Sam looked around. “I don't know. I gotta say uh, hole in reality to a bombed out Apocalypse world? I'm gonna go with eleven.”
Dean nodded in agreement. “Sounds right.”
“You don't have to worry. The child, he opened this door. He'll close it,” Castiel seemed positive.
“You sure about that?” Dean wasn't as positive.
“I have faith.”
“What do you think?” Dean turned to Liam.
Liam shrugged. “It's not a huge tear, only a small one. If it was caused by the birthing process, once the child is born it should close. Now if you don't mind, I'd like to go back to our own world. I don't like this one.”
He jumped when a bullet fired from seemingly nowhere almost grazed him. Dean pulled his own weapon and turned to face a figure whose face was covered by a scarf. “Hey! Hands in the air!”
“No, don't!” Castiel urged.
“What the hell are you doing with him?” the figure demanded in a familiar voice.
“Bobby?” Sam couldn't believe his eyes when they could finally see the man's face.
“This isn't the Liam of this world,” Castiel quickly explained. “He's from mine, and no threat.”
“Wait, there's a version of me here?” Liam tried to wrap his mind around that.
“Yeah, a sadistic bastard,” Bobby answered.
“What about us?” Dean asked.
“Am I supposed to know you?”
“Yeah, Sam and Dean... Winchester.” Dean seemed a little hurt.
“You say that like it's supposed to mean something to me, but... The only Winchester I ever heard of was John.”
“Yeah. John Winchester, our father,” Sam was hoping it would trigger something.
“Doubt it. He's dead. Been dead over forty years now. Only reason I know about him is this hunter I ran with, Mary Campbell. You get a few pints of shine into her, and she always told the same story about the man she loved; John Winchester. Azazel killed her about ten years ago.”
Sam turned to Castiel. “Cas, what the hell is this?”
“This is a world where you were never born. It's a world you never saved,” the angel answered the question.
“But if I'm here there must be some hope,” Liam reasoned.
Bobby scoffed at that. “You, or rather the you here, make the demons look like angels. When this whatever opened up, all sorts of alarms went off back at my place. I got here just in time to see your boy get ambushed by a tempter demon.”
“A what?” Dean raised an eyebrow at that that.
“It's, um, black eyes, pointed teeth, horns,” Castiel explained.
Sam gave Castiel a funny look. “Wait a second. Demons have horns now?”
“Whole new world, Sam,” Dean sighed.
“Usually I gun down flyboys on sight,” Bobby said. “But, uh, he looked different. Wasn't wearing a necklace made out of baby ears, for one thing.”
“Why...? I don't wanna know.” Liam shook his head.
“We got to talking about where I came from and our two worlds,” Castiel continued the story.
“From what he says, pretty much peaches and cream on your side.”
“Oh, I wouldn't say that. It's better than this,” Dean commented.
Bobby shrugged. “Well, I don't know. Ain't so bad here, if you like killing angels.”
“And you do?” Sam asked.
“It's my hobby and my passion. So I figured, it's only a matter of time before the dicks upstairs get wind of this. And when they show, me and Rufus go to work. He's loaded with a hundred rounds, cast from old angel blades.”
“Wait, angel killing bullets? Awesome,” Dean liked that until Castiel shot him a nasty glare.
They said their goobyes to Bobby and then went back to their own world. “Are you all right?” Castiel asked Dean when he saw his friend's face.
Dean shook his head. “No, Cas. Pretty far from all right. I mean, we've got Lucifer on this side, we've got Mad Max World on that side. I mean, yeah, we've been down before, but this? I mean, I don't even know where to start.” Then Crowley appeared right in front of them. “Oh, come on!”
“Hello, boys. Again,” Crowley greeted them.
“Wait a second, how the hell did you...?” Sam wondered how he had gotten free.
The demon held up a bandaged bloody hand. “I improvised. Lucky I did. Turns out I'm the answer to all your problems.”
“No, you're the cause of them,” Liam argued.
“Mistakes were made,” Crowley admitted. “On both our parts. Now, will you at least hear me out?”
Dean sighed. “Well, it's not like we have any great ideas.”
They went over the plan, and it may not have been the best they'd ever heard, but as Dean said, it wasn't like they had anything better. “I'm gonna go check on Kelly quick,” Castiel said as he went inside.
Dean handed a weapon to his brother. “You ready?”
Sam shook his head. “Nope. When has that ever stopped us?”
“It hasn't,” Dean answered as he turned to Liam. “You sure about this kid? More sure than what you did with... you know...?”
Liam shot a glare at Dean. “As I said, the failure was not on my part. And yes, I'm sure. Will you just trust me without a million questions?”
“This is me trusting you,” Dean argued back. “This is gonna work. It has to.”
It wasn't long before Lucifer strolled right up to the house and smirked at the sight of them. “Well, this is a fun surprise. I gotta hand it to you guys. You never give up, even when you should.”
“Look, whatever you're planning on doing, Chuck... God will stop you, just like he did last time,” Sam warned.
Lucifer pretended to be afraid for a moment. “You're right. What should I do? Oh, God! Don't strike me dead! Come on, Sam. You sound like a virgin in Jesus camp. We can't. God is watching. No. Chuck walked. He's gone.”
“But I'm not,” Liam pointed out. “And just like you enjoy breaking Daddy's toys, I get a lot of pleasure out of breaking yours.”
“Forgive me, love, for not quaking in my boots when we both know you aren't at full power. Of course, I could always help you with that. It's not too late to make our old dream a reality.”
The blond shook his head. “Same old Lucy, you haven't changed a bit. You think warfare is all about the brawn.”
“And I'm about to have more of it than you could ever imagine.”
“So Apocalypse, take two. That's your plan?” Dean didn't seem impressed.
Lucifer shrugged. “When in doubt, go with the classics. That's what I always say. Well, boys, enough with the foreplay. Let's do this.” Castiel came out of the house and charged. Lucifer tossed him aside like a rag doll. “Well, that worked,” the archangel seemed very smug.
“Get Kelly out of here,” Liam instructed.
Dean caught Liam's gaze for a brief moment to convey a silent message before he and Sam ran behind the house. Lucifer's eyes narrowed at his old flame. “This is a bit intriguing.”
“Even if I don't have the juice to stop you, did you really expect me to let things be easy?”
Lucifer chuckled. “When it comes to you, nothing is ever easy. Even after the whole turning me into Crowley's slave thing, believe me when I say I don't want to hurt you. Your pals, I wanna see them ripped to shreds, but you... Your love is the most insane drug ever created because even after everything, I'm willing to consider it all just a lover's spat and take you back.”
“I've got three words to say to that. Bye, bye, bye.” The blond punched Lucifer hard in the chest, putting enough power behind it to knock Lucifer down, then he too ran behind the house.”
“Real mature!” Lucifer called out as he picked himself back up and followed. “You guys? I really want to enjoy this. Really wanna savor just ripping you apart, getting all up in there, and getting all gooey. But, you know, little slugger's almost here and, uh... Well, I'm on the clock.” Liam was standing by the rift, and with a little smirk and a wave goodbye he touched it and was sucked in. Lucifer followed of course, and looked around. “Interesting.”
Sam was waiting. “You wanted the Apocalypse? You got it.”
“Sammy, hey. Where's your big bro?”
“Right here,” Dean stepped out into view with the angel killing gun the Bobby of that world had talked about.
“Sweet toy,” Lucifer didn't seem concerned.
“Yeah, I got it off an old... new pal of mine. See, we have this bet, see if it works against an archangel. So say hello to my little friend.”
As Dean opened fire Sam ducked behind a large rock where Crowley was waiting with the spell he had put together. “Took you long enough,” the demon grumbled.
“We couldn't let anything seem off. Now come on.”
“We do this ritual, we seal that rift, and we lock the Devil in this godforsaken place. That's the plan, remember? Two birds, one spell.”
“I know, just hurry.”
Dean emptied the gun, and Lucifer didn't really seem phased. “You lose.”
He advanced on Dean, but Liam got between them and threw Lucifer into a rock. “Again, do you really think I'm gonna make anything easy for you?” He was clearly fatigued, but forcing himself to stay standing.
Lucifer still had a big smug grin on his face. “Give me a sign. Hit me, baby, one more time.” Liam closed his eyes and the air around him started to shimmer. “What are you doing?”
“Adapting to his surroundings,” Dean answered the question, but looked a little worried. “From what we've gathered, in this alternate reality, he killed you and took your place. The Liam of this world really became consumed with his hatred of you, and then of course all archangels by association.”
Liam screamed as he unleashed a torrent of power that threw Lucifer into the rocks and ripped at his flesh. It lasted about a minute before both of them collapsed to the ground. Liam's nose was dripping blood, so Dean moved him out of the way.
That was when Crowley stepped out from behind another group of rocks. “Surprise.”
Lucifer was a little unsteady on his feet, but he refused to show weakness. “Crowley! You sneaky little... So I guess I get to kill you twice, huh, Crowley?”
Crowley looked his enemy over. “I doubt it.”
“Oh no. You had your chance. You could've put me back in the cage, but you had to make it personal, didn't you? Both of you.”
Crowley only shrugged. “You're right. It is personal. You humiliated me. I hate you. Deeply. Truly. I'm gonna enjoy wiping that smug, self-satisfied look off your face. Personally.” He pulled out an angel blade.
“Come on, Crowley. You know whatever you try, you're gonna lose,” Lucifer was still smug. “I admit, my sweetheart there really walloped me, which I didn't see coming, but I'll bounce back quick. I always do.”
Crowley eyed the blade in his hand with a thoughtful look. “You know, I've come to realize that you're right.” He turned to look at Sam, Liam, and Dean for a moment. “Bye, boys,” he said before stabbing himself. As Crowley fell to the ground dead, Castiel charged through the rift.”
“Cas!” Dean called out as he tried to stop the angel, but Sam grabbed him.
“We gotta go!” Sam cried, as he pulled his brother and a still weak Liam back through the rift. They stood in the yard of the house and watched as the rift started to fade. Castiel emerged, but was stabbed from behind with an angel blade.
“No!” Dean screamed with rage.
Lucifer shoved Castiel's corpse onto the ground. “That was fun. Seriously, guys, points for trying. Super impressed, but uh, playtime's over.”
“Get away from them,” Mary growled as she emerged from the house.
Lucifer whistled at her. “Mary, right? Yeah, I've heard about you. You, uh, are certainly living up to the hype. Look, seriously, I just wanted to say thank you for everything. I owe ya, kid.”
Mary pulled her fist from behind her back, revealing brass knuckles with angelic carvings. Sam tried to grab her and stop her. “Mom.”
“I love you,” she said before punching Lucifer in the face as hard she could.
Lucifer was pushed back, but still standing. “Cute. Is that all you got, mama?”
Mary hit him again and again, each blow pushing him a little farther back toward the closing rift. With one hard hit she knocked him through, but he grabbed her arm at the last minute and pulled her through with him just before the rift was gone.
“No!” Dean cried out again.
Sam noticed a flash from inside the house and went to check it out. Liam followed. They found Kelly's body on the bed, and Sam closed her eyes. “Look,” Liam pointed to a set of scorched footprints that led into the nursery. A figure was crouched in the shadows, his golden eyes taking them in. “It's all right,” Liam spoke in a soft tone.
