( 16 years later, Erin is 15, Jamie is 13, Charlie 25, and Voight is 34, Justin is 16)
Erin gazed at the wall, tears streaming down her face. She remained rooted to the spot where Justin had left her. Self-loathing gnawed at her for the decision she had made, but she knew it was inevitable.
Justin deserved happiness, and she couldn't be the one to hold him back or bring him misfortune. With a heavy heart, she closed her eyes as the door creaked open once more.
"Erin."
Erin's head lifted at the sound of Dr. Charles' voice. She hesitated, fighting the urge to flee from the bed, but realized that he posed no threat. She knew why he was there: April had likely sent him to her.
Dr. Charles paused, respectful of her space. "May I approach?" he inquired, aware of the need for her consent after the traumatic incident.
"If you're here to keep me company, then that would be fine," Erin replied softly.
"If April or Maggie sent you to talk to me about Henley, you're wasting your time." Erin's words drew a chuckle from Dr. Charles as he approached her bedside and pulled up a chair.
Erin had a fondness for Dr. Charles, who had assisted her during Nadia's passing. "No, I'm simply here to provide companionship and see if you need a friend," the psychiatrist responded with a calm demeanor.
Erin nodded, letting out a relieved sigh. "Who sent you, then?" she inquired, turning her attention towards him. "Was it April?" she asked, knowing it was likely her, given her frequent visits.
Dr. Charles chuckled. "You caught me, but I'm not here to pressure you into talking about anything you don't wish to discuss," he said, leaning back in his chair and placing his leg on his lap. "However, I'm here if you have anything you'd like to share.”
Erin nodded and turned to face the wall, unwilling to engage in conversation. She allowed Dr. Charles watched television silently as her eyelids fluttered closed.
Exhausted by recent events, she hoped that sleep would grant her respite from Justin's presence in her thoughts.
As she drifted into slumber, the brunette's dreams transported her back to the past. She recalled her initial encounter with the Voight family and the time when Justin became a part of her life.
Her memories centered on the early days of her and Jamie's struggles as they navigated life without succumbing to their mother's neglect or violence.
( The past)
Erin stood on the curb in ripped jeans and a hoodie, clutching drugs in her arms. She cast a glance at her sister, Jamie, who chatted incessantly about her time with Charlie. Erin couldn't resist rolling her eyes.
"How long are we waiting?" Jamie asked, taking a drag from her cigarette.
"Until we have enough money for Charlie's beer and other wants," Erin replied, surveying the scene.
A car pulled up, and Erin beamed. "See, I told you," she said, approaching the vehicle. She offered to sell drugs or engage in other activities, depending on the price.
With a forced smile, the brunette leaned on the open window. "Can I help you with anything?" she asked the driver. Jamie stayed nearby, leaving the interaction to her older sister.
"Step in," the man said, unlocking the door for Erin to slide into the passenger seat. "What's your fancy? I have some pills on hand or you can join me for a quick thrill."
The man glanced at Erin's brunette locks and caressed her leg. "How much for both pleasures?" he inquired, his hand tracing her thigh.
"I'll give you a discounted rate," Erin responded, climbing onto his lap. The man grinned. "I'm all ears."
"Fifty bucks," he offered, withdrawing the bill. Erin snatched it with a smirk. "Sounds fair!"
Erin tucked the money away and leaned in for a kiss. But their moment was interrupted by a knock on the window. Jamie's face appeared, signaling them to leave.
"Looks like our fun has to end," Erin said. She handed the man a small bag of pills. "Here's a little something for you." She tapped his shirt, signaling its placement.
Exiting her car, Erin approached her sister, "What's up?" she inquired, adjusting her clothing. "We're being watched," Jamie whispered, indicating a dark SUV across the street.
"So?" Erin asked, annoyed by the interruption. "They're likely waiting for someone," suggested Erin. Jamie shook her head.
Undeterred, Erin crossed the street and approached the SUV.
Voight, inside his own SUV, observed two young women peddling something. He noticed a car pulling up and the elder one entering it. "What should we do?" his partner, Al, asked.
“Just wait a minute,” Voight said, his gaze fixed on the younger one's eyes. She watched them intently, clearly aware of their observation. The blond girl approached the car where her sister sat and tapped on the window.
Al nodded as Voight rolled down his own window when the brunette reached his vehicle. “Can we help you?” she inquired.
“Uh, no,” Voight replied, considering how to protect Al's cover.
“Then why are you watching my sister and me?” Erin asked, her hazel eyes narrowing. “If you're looking for drugs, just say so,” she added, her gaze alternating between the two men. “But I don't think that's your motive.” She pondered their purpose, noting their well-dressed appearance.
Voight chuckled. “No, ma'am,” he said, glancing at his friend and then back at the teenager. “We're simply waiting for a friend,” he lied, hoping she would believe him.
Erin locked eyes with Voight before slowly nodding. "Alright," she said and moved to leave but paused. "Could you spare some money for me and my sister? We haven't eaten in days, and I only have fifty dollars that has to go to a friend."
"How much do you need?" Voight asked, deciding to go along with their story until they could expose them.
Erin contemplated. "Enough for food and drinks," she said with a warm smile. "We'd greatly appreciate it."
Voight nodded and withdrew fifty dollars, handing it to Erin. She smiled gratefully and patted his cheek. "Thank you, sir," she said, and returned to her sister.
"What did they want?" Jamie asked.
"Just waiting on a friend," Erin replied. She held up the money she'd acquired. "But let's take a break and get something to eat.”
