Hotch / ReidWritten for the Chit Chat on Author’s Corner Halloween Horrors Challenge. The moderators supplied a number of titles of the novels of the Master of Horror himself, Stephen King. We were to pick any title and write a fic using that as the prompt. I chose, “Cycle of the Werewolf”Chapter 26
“… What do we do?” Reid asked.
“We stop them.”“How?” Reid murmured, almost afraid to ask.“… we kill them.”“Aaron!” Reid gasped, turning and looking up at his alpha. “They… they’re seven men! How can we… I mean…”“Can we trust them to stop if we ask them?” Hotch pointed out, looking at Reid. We can’t arrest them, that’s for sure.” Reid drooped. “Yeah, but… I mean… Aaron… There’s also probably a pack nearby… what are the odds that the whole pack is in on it? Could we maybe… I dunno… seek out their Alpha? Perhaps THEY can help.”Hotch looked down at his little mate. “… That may be a good idea.” Reid blinked, then smiled. “We should look into it.”“… Do we HAVE to?” Morgan asked, and the pair turned and looked at the man who had been eating his lunch across the table from them and listening to the whole conversation. Hotch just chuckled. “You don’t have to. WE do.”“But what should the team do?” Morgan asked.“You guys work the profile. We have to be sure we cover all of our bases.”“Okay.” Morgan said, nodding in relief.“How do we find the pack?” Reid asked.“We call them.” Hotch said. “Tonight. When it gets dark. We go out to the woods and we call them.” “The woods?!” Reid cried in dismay, then groaned.“… I hate the woods.” Reid whined, daintily picking his way along the path in the trail of his Alpha. The black male grinned and looked back at his little brown omega, tongue lolling out of his mouth in amusement.
“You’ll get to like it. Just give it a chance.” He said.“Hard to like it when I know death could be waiting around every tree.”“Oh, don’t be ridiculous.” Hotch chuckled.“It’s TRUE!!! Death with sharp teeth!”“Spencer… YOU have sharp teeth.”“That’s not the point!” Reid wailed. They reached the top of the hill and Reid huddled close to Hotch, looking around nervously. The larger male looked down and flicked his ears, then nuzzled his little mate, licking his cheek. Then, he sucked in a deep breath, lifted his head and raised his Voice. Reid squeaked.“Don’t tell them that we’re here!” He wailed, listening to Hotch’s howl carrying over the hills.Hotch looked down at him. “Spencer… if we want to talk to the pack alpha, we have to call him here!”“… I changed my mind! That was a BAD IDEA!!!” Reid cried. Hotch just rolled his eyes, and let out another howl. And this time… he was answered. Reid tensed, but Hotch listened to the distant howl. Then he answered. “Aaronnnnuh! Donnn’t!”“Calm down, Spencer.” Hotch said, turning and licking over the pup’s ears. Then, they waited. Every now and then, they heard a wolf in the distance and Hotch would answer. And then, the wolves were approaching. Hotch let out a soft exclamation as his frightened mate managed to wiggle his way UNDERNEATH the Alpha male like a pup, trembling in fright as they were surrounded. And then the wolves appeared from the darkness. They were Timber Wolves, much like Reid… they were not the larger wolves like Hotch, but more slight in stature, rangy and fast, exchanging bulk for long legs. The wolves slowly prowled around the pair, curious but wary of the intruders. After a moment of waiting for someone to step forward as a spokesperson, Hotch spoke up instead.“We are not here for trouble.” He announced. “My name is Aaron Hotchner, and this is Spencer Reid. We’ve come from Quantico, Virginia. We’re with the FBI, and we need to speak with your Alpha.”“I’m here. So talk.” Barked a large male, creeping amongst the trees from beyond the prowling wolves.“This is a very sensitive conversation. It would be best kept between just us.” Hotch said. A moment later, the alpha appeared. He was a bit lighter in color than the others with more gray. He eyed Hotch, and then looked at Reid, sniffing at him. “Your mate?”“… Yes.” Hotch nodded, narrowing his eyes.“You will come and speak with my mate. HE will remain with my pack. If you try anything…”“I won’t.” Hotch said with a nod, then moved away from Reid. Reid yelped and tried to lunge after Hotch, but the pack closed in on him. One of the wolves seized his scruff in her teeth and pulled him back, but her teeth did not break skin; she wouldn’t even leave bruises. She simply tugged Reid back with a firm jaw, while the others surrounded him. He whimpered pitifully. Hotch looked at him, then turned and walked away with the Alpha Pair. When they were out of sight, Reid whined.“Alright…” the Alpha snorted as soon as they were a good distance from the rest of the pack. “What is all this about?” He and his mate turned and faced Hotch. Hotch eyed the female… she was pregnant… It was early, but he could tell.“Some deaths.” Hotch said. “We’ve been called out here by the local law enforcement to investigate a number of ritualistic murders. When I visited the crime scene… I could smell a number of our kind.”The alpha’s eyes darkened. “Let me guess… seven males.”“… Yes.” Hotch sad.“We know them. But they are not our pack.” The female said, sitting down heavily. “They are a rogue pack living up in the mountains, refusing to integrate into the human society. They split off from our pack generations ago. They’re a small fringe group… we kill them when we find them, but we don’t know where they are hiding.”“I need to find them.”“Your best bet is to wait for the full moon.” The Alpha Male said. “When the Sacrifice is offered.”“Sacrifice?!” Hotch blurted, horrified.“The wolves aren’t the only ones to blame.” The female said in a low tone. “We know the tree… and the sacrifices are left there for the wolves… by humans.”“What…?”“That’s all we know.”“You haven’t stopped them!?”“We can’t FIND them, Agent!” Snapped the alpha. “And the humans are NOT our problem!”“People are DYING!”“That is NOT my concern!” The Alpha male barked. “My concern is my pack.”“At least… point me in the right direction.” Hotch growled.“You already have it.” The Alpha male snorted, turning and walking away, his gravid made by his side. “The tree… Do what you like, but leave my pack out of it.” And with a bark, the Alpha led the pack away, and Reid was scuttling over to Hotch, eyes wide, tail between his legs. He hid behind his alpha and watched the pack disappear.“… That was scary.” He gasped.“They didn’t even hurt you!”“You left me alone with them!”“… Come on. We have to go the crime scene.”“What?”“The alpha said that the tree is where we need to begin our hunt.”“For who?”“A fringe pack who live as wolves, and wolves alone. The wolves are killing the victims… but humans are the ones chaining them there.”“What?!” Reid gasped.“I don’t fully understand either…” Hotch admitted. “We need to find the humans responsible… and then wait for the full moon to take care of the wolves…”“Aaron… That’s in two weeks.”“Right now, we worry about the humans responsible. Once we’ve taken care of them, THEN we’ll worry about the wolves.”“Any word?” Garcia asked, the moment Morgan answered the phone.
“Not yet, Baby Girl.” The man told her. “We don’t know how long it will be. We may not hear back from them by morning.”“I hate this waiting.” Garcia groaned into the phone.“I know, Mama… Just… try to get some rest.”“Oh… I won’t be able to rest until our boys are home safe…”“You know Hotch will take care of Reid, gorgeous. They’ll be fine.”“It’s two of them going out to see a whole pack, Derek…”“They’ll be fine.” Morgan insisted.“… I hope so…”
“… this place is creepy.” Reid mumbled as he and Hotch emerged into the clearing before the old gnarled tree. The crime scene techs had finally left the site alone… Hotch and Reid carefully skirted around the empty graves that lay in the space, gaping wounds in the earth. Reid looked around nervously as Hotch slowly circled the tree, sniffing. A moment later, he changed to his halfway form, standing on his hind legs to sniff at the chains that still dangled from the old tree.
“The pack alpha was right… I smell humans on these… and not just the victims.”“So what do we do?” Reid asked, from where he was sniffing around the perimeter. “We need to find out where these humans are…” Hotch said. “But it will be difficult… with all the cops and what not stomping through here, it may be too late to track their scents… and they already are about two weeks old anyway…”“… Or we could follow the trail?” Reid suggested, poking his head out from behind a bush. Hotch blinked.“Trail?” He asked. Reid ducked his head under a branch of the bush and lifted it. And sure enough… there was a very faint walking trail… “Oh.” Reid smiled and turned, disappearing down the trail. Hotch blinked, then grinned and went after his mate, sniffing the ground as he went.“You’re right. This is the way.” He said, looking over and the youth. Reid smiled back at him.“Good! I much prefer taking a ready-made path to trail blazing any day.” He said and Hotch grinned, nipping at the pup’s ear affectionately. Reid let out a little yip and frisked about, teasing his alpha mate. The path they followed went on for miles… they started at an easy loping run, but eventually had to slow down to a walk, as poor Reid still wasn’t suited to running for long stretches. “How much further?” He whined.“How am I supposed to know?” Hotch asked, glancing back at Reid. “We need to keep going until we find out who is involved…”“Aaron… it will be dawn, soon.”“I know. We have to keep going.”“… I’m hungry!”“Spencer…”“Sorry…” Reid muttered. It was about a half hour later they emerged on the top of a ridge and the forest opened up. They stood, side by side, and stared down at the village beneath them.“… I don’t remember going through a time warp… do you?” Reid asked. Hotch glanced at him, then looked back down at the small town of log cabins. “No wires for electricity… I don’t see any equipment for plumbing… What do you want to do?”“Watch.”“What about the team?” Reid asked. “They’ll be worried.”“… you’re right.” Hotch sighed. “Okay… I’ll stay and watch. I want YOU to go back. Get the team and come up here… ask questions as the FBI.”“Are you sure we should split up?”“It’ll be fine. And you’re the faster of the pair of us. You’ll reach the team the fastest…”“Well… okay…” Reid said slowly. Hotch turned and nuzzled him. “I’ll see you soon, babe.”“Okay.” Reid nodded, then turned and darted off into the woods…Time passed… The sun began to rise. A rooster crowed. And then, people began to emerge. The black wolf narrowed his eyes, studying the people. The women wore simple dresses that fell to between their ankles and knees, black in color. They wore white bonnets on their head. The men wore black trousers and white shirts. He watched a small handful of children making their way down to the little stream that ran past the village with buckets, filling them before carrying them back to their houses. Hotch frowned… it was, as Reid said, like stepping back in time… At least until an engine revved. The doors of a large barn were shoved open, and a very old pick up truck emerged, with three men jammed into the front seat together. It began to drive towards an old dirt road that headed down the mountain, but paused as a woman went running towards the truck. Hotch perked his ears.“Hold on, Joseph! Here are a few more things we need!” And she handed the passenger a piece of paper. And then the truck was gone in a cloud of dust… The black wolf settled down to watch the village, hidden in the shadows of the foliage on the ridge…The little brown wolf darted through the woods, eager to get back to his team and get them up the mountain to investigate the small village… but he had a long way to go. By the time he had reached the crime scene, people were back to work there again… Reid had to avoid the clearing to avoid being seen, and then began to pick his way down the mountain towards town… But God, he was tired…
“Uhg… FINALLY…” He panted, emerging from the trees and approaching the SUV. By the time he got there, he was human once more. He pulled his clothes from the front seat and got dressed, then snagged his phone. He had nine missed calls and twenty two text messages. “… Nice.” He quickly dialed.“Reid! About time, man! Is everything okay?!” Morgan answered, before the first ring had even finished.“Everything’s fine, Morgan. Calm down.”“Calm down!? You have Hotch have been missing for eighteen hours, man!”“We haven’t been MISSING, we told you where we were going!” Reid insisted. “Reid… you were supposed to be back by sunup! It’s lunch time!”“Great! I’m on my way to the station, I’ll expect lunch when I get there.” Reid said and hung up, snickering. But his smile faded when he glanced at Hotch’s clothes on the seat beside him…The drive to station went quickly, and when he arrived, he was actually surprised to find that lunch was waiting.“Spence!” JJ gasped, smiling in relief. She curled her arms around his neck. “We were worried.”“No reason for that.” Reid said, hugging her back. “But I’m STARVING!”“Well, lunch is here as you commanded, your highness.” Rossi drawled, giving Reid a look.“Where’s the sheriff?” Reid asked, seizing a roast beef sandwich and tearing into it with relish.“I uh… I’ll get him…” Emily said, eyeing the genius and leaving the room. She returned a few moment later.“Sheriff?” Reid asked, swallowing the food in his mouth. “What do you know about a little village in the mountains? Log cabins?”“… You think that cult group is responsible?!”“Cult?” Rossi immediately pounced on the word. “You have a cult out here and didn’t tell us?”“They’re NOT suspects.” The sheriff said, frowning. “Look, I don’t know what they believe, but they’re quiet people. Never cause trouble. How did you find out about them?”“That’s irrelevant.” Reid said quickly. “You still should have told us about them.”“Look… they’re simple folk, agent. Live off the land. They’re like the uh, the Amish.”“But they’re not Amish?” Morgan prodded.“No… they’re some religious cult… We don’t pry. Don’t see ‘em much. They come into town for supplies once or twice a week, and bring in some of their wares. They have a little store out on the highway. They sell their hand made furniture, quilts, stuff like that…”“We’d like to visit them. Ask them some questions.” Rossi said. The Sheriff frowned, but sighed.“Alright, alright…”“Great.” Reid said, snagging several sandwiches. “Let’s go.” The Sheriff blinked, then shrugged and followed, asking JJ beside him, “Can he really eat all that?”“He can eat anything and everything and not gain an ounce…” Emily drawled, sounding VERY put out…Hotch caught their scent before he saw them.
“Finally…” He sighed, standing and watching the team walking into the little village, having parked outside of it, on the sheriff’s insistence. He saw his young mate discretely separate from the group and disappear into the underbrush. A few minutes later, he could hear him approach…“… Ouch! Damn!” Hotch shook with suppressed laughter. “Ow!” He sighed and shook his head. “I HATE the woods…”“Oh, calm down, Spencer.” Hotch laughed as Reid emerged from the woods, looking ruffled, disgruntled, and with sticks and leaves in his clothes and hair. “… You brought food?!” Reid watched as the man quickly changed to his human form, striding towards him with purpose in his steps. Reid froze and his jaw dropped as the naked man approached… only to snatch a sandwich and tear into it eagerly. Reid just uttered a strangled squeak as he was unable to prevent his eyes from… dropping.“Oh… ummm… Aaron?”“Let’s get down there.” Hotch mumbled around the sandwich.“Huh? What?”"I'm going to talk to these people.""Um... Aaron? They might be more willing to chat if you were, you know... not naked?""Huh? Oh... right." Hotch grumbled, then snatched his clothes from Reid and began to tug it on, holding the sandwich tightly in his teeth. Reid sighed and rolled his eyes, following the man. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
