SUMMARY: A Fin-based saga to follow his life that isn’t seen on the show.

            Fin awoke from a good night’s sleep and smiled as he felt the reason why. He always
seemed to sleep better when he had her with him. Maybe it was just the comfort of having a
warm body next to him, but Fin believed it was because he didn’t feel quite so alone when she
was there. Not the obvious there’s-no-one-in-the-room alone, but the kind of being alone you
felt down in your soul. The kind he felt before he knew her. Before he knew her.
            Fin thought back to the images he’d let play in his mind last night before he’d fallen
asleep. He wasn’t sure what to make of them. It had been a long time since he’d entertained the
idea of having his own family. He wasn’t even really sure, he tried to convince himself, what
had prompted him to think about it then. He wasn’t ready to admit, not even to himself, that Sam
felt like the piece in the puzzle of his life that had been missing.
            What he did admit, however, was that he had no idea where their relationship was going.
He hadn’t expected them to happen, had fought against it even, and was still too afraid to
examine it closely. Nothing about them being together made sense, yet here they were. With it
feeling so damn good.
            Sam stirred and kissed his chest where her head lay. “Good morning.”
          #160#160;Fin tightened his arms around her. “How’d you know I was awake?”
            “I could feel you thinking.” Fin heard the smile in her voice, and rolled onto his side to
face her.
n>&#n>            “Oh, yeah? Then what am I thinking now?” Sam laughed.
            “Nothing that’s going to get us on the road in time. You want to face Munch late for
work after spending the night with me in a hotel?”
            All traces of humor left Fin’s face. “No.” He’d had about as much of his partner lately as
he could take. Munch knew how he felt about having his private life discussed at work with
anyone, yet kept pushing his buttons about it anyway. Fin sat up.
            “His bony ass better not start in on me today.”
            Sam laughed, happy with the two men in her life. “You two wouldn’t know what to do
without each other.”
            “Yeah, well, if he gives me any more grief, I might be willing to find out.”
            She smiled at him, knowing it was a complete bluff. “I don’t know,” she sighed. “He did
introduce us.”
            Fin gave her a sideward glance, trying not to smile himself. “Ah-huh. And I met some
crazy girl who’d rather wrestle in the middle of the night than sleep.”
            Sam shoved him off the bed. “Fine.” She stood over him, naked, and stretched leisurely.
            “Then I’m going to have room service bring up sthinthings from the gift shop while
you’re in the shower. A couple of toothbrushes. Maybe a change of clothes.” She preened then
turned, giving him a full view of her butt.
            “Maybe I’ll even put on a robe when the guy gets here.”
            Fin sat on the floor for a moment wishing he’d kept his mouth shut. Her naked body
would be in bed, then, laying next to him instead of at the door posing for the room service guy.
He stood up and walked toward her.
            “That ain’t nice.”
            “What isn’t?” she asked innocently.
            “Getting me locked up.”
            Sam looked at him, confused. “I beg your pardon?”
            “Youwer wer the door like that, and the poor bastard wouldn’t stand a chance. He’d have
to try to touch you, I’d have to kill him, then I’d get thrown in jail. And,” he threw in for good
measure, “Munch would have to get another partner. He’s too old to be breaking in somebody
new.”
            Sam pretended to think about it. “You’re right. Then for his sake, I’ll be in the shower
and you can wait for the stuff to come up.” She kissed him lightly, but stepped away when he
tried to embrace her.
            “Can’t be late, remember?”
            “Yeah, I know.” Fin groaned in frustration. He watched as she dialed for room service,
silently wishing his girl wasn’t related to his partner.

     0;�      Munch paced back and forth at the train station in front of the clock. He’d gotten there
early but still felt uneasy. He looked at his cell and wanted to rain a thousand gypsy curses down
upon it. The damn thing had died on him at some point last night. As far as he knew, he’d been
unreachable for the past nine hours. He was afraid that Dorian had tried to call him, then when
he couldn’t reach him, had decided the whole thing was a joke, and wasn’t coming. He’d hate to
have to go back home empty-handed. Not after he’d gotten this far.
            “Detective Munch?”
         &;  John whirled around at the sound of Fin’s voice. Dorian stood a few feet away looking a
little concerned. Of course. When had Fin ever called him Detective?
            “Are you okay?” The sight of Munch pacing and mumbling to himself had not instilled
any confidence in Dorian. For the umpteenth time he had to wonder if maybe this guy wasn’t a
little nuts.
            “I’m fine. Great, actually, now that you’re here.” He held his phone up. “You didn’t try
to call, did you? The battery died. I was a little worried that maybe you couldn’t reach me.”
            “No. No, I didn’t call.” To tell the truth, Dorian hadn’t given much thought to Munch at
all. Instead, he’d spent the night obsessing over what he should believe about his father, and
what he was going to do if what he alreadoughought he knew turned out to be false.
            “So,” John could tell Dorian was eager to get going, “if you’ll head this way, I’ll pick up
the tickets and we can be on our way.”
            “That’s okay.” Dorian took out his wallet as they approached the ticket window. “I pay
my own way.”
            Munch smiled. Fin, my friend, you are in for one heck of a surprise.

            Fin tried to stay focused on the road in front of him, but was finding it a little difficult to
do. His eyes kept straying over to the passenger’s seat where Sam sat in the miniskirt she’d
ordered from the gift shop. She’d had no idea that ‘mini’ meant barely below the crotch.
            She’d laughed when she saw how short it was, thinking that no one would ever really
wear such a thing. The bellhop had assured her, however, that it was one of the shop’s top-selling items. She’d decided to have some fun with it, then, and had exchanged her new top for
the cropped one she’d worn the day before. There was now more skin on her body exposed than
there was covered by clothing.
            Fin had nearly had a heart attack when he caught sight of her in it, and had almost refused
to drive back unless she changed, until he remembered that they’d driven up in her car. There
was no way in the world he was going to let her out of his sight dressed like that, let alone make
her drive across several states by herself. He had to admit, though, she did look good enough to
eat.
            He glanced over at her again when she crossed her legs and absently started rubbing them
together. Instantly, there wasn’t a millimeter of space left in his pants to fill. Sam noticed the
bulge, and naturally couldn’t let the opportunity go tste.ste. She inched over to him and began
playing with his loose ponytail.
            “You know,” she started casually, “for someone who didn’t like this skirt very much, it
sure seems to turn you on.” Fin swallowed as her free hand found its way into his lap and patted
his rock-hard erection.
            He drove the car into the deserted parking lot of a roadside diner and pulled up alongside
the building. A part of him felt foolish for behaving like a sex-starved teenager, but he couldn’t
help himself. There was no way he was going to make it all the way back to New York.
            “Hungry?” He turned to see Sam smiling at him.
            “Yeah.” He ran a hand over her exposed thigh. “But for the record, it ain’t the skirt that
turns me on. It’s you in it.”
            “Really?” She climbed into his lap facing him, with Fin reclining the seat to give her
more room. She undid the zipper on his jeans and released him from the confining space. “Even
if it makes me look like a professional?”
            “Just as long as you’re only mine.” He slipped his hands under her blouse, then sighed
loudly as she slid him into her. He looked up at her as she began rocking and hoped with all his
might that whoever was assigned to patrol this route didn’t stop by again for at least another
hour.

            Munch watched Dorian as the train sped its way to New York. Apparently, he was the
silent type, too. He’d taken a seat on the train next to a window, adopted what Munch was now
calling ‘the Tutuola scowl’, and had had very little to say for nearly an hour. John knew he must
have been bursting with a million questions and doubts, but understood that it was a terrible
position to be in. Whichever way this turned out for him, today he would learn for certain that
one of his parents had betrayed him.
            Munch shook his head in sympathy, then tried to focus on what he was going to say to Fin
when they got to the station house. He hoped there would be time for him to stow Dorian away
somewhere and prepare Fin a little in private before Fin saw him. He couldn’t imagine what his
partner was going to go through when he found out that the son he’d spent the past decade and a
half mourning was now less than a few yards away from him, but Munch did know that no one
else had the right to see it happen.

            Sam looked up as Fin came out of the service station carrying a bag. He’d gone in to pay
for gas, but must have picked up a few things while he was in there. She watched as an attractive
black woman walked up and started talking to him. From the way he gestured, Sam guessed the
woman had asked him for directions.
            Seeing them side by side drew out an insecurity that she’d managed to suppress since the
beginning of their relationship. What if, in the end, he realized that he did prefer to be with
someone his own color? Certainly, it was an aspect of his life with which she’d never be able to
closely identify. Sympathize, yes. But truly empathize? How could she? She’d never been
black in an oftentimes racist world.
            Sam watched as the woman handed Fin a notepad and he began writing. She could only
imagine that the woman had asked him to write the directions down for her. Sam noticed the
way she kept glancing at Fin. It didn’t take a genius to see that she was interested in him. Sam
couldn’t blame her.
            Fin finished writing, then handed the pad back to the woman. She tore off the top sheet,
scribbled something on the one underneath, then handed it to him before walking away. Fin
looked at the paper and started to call out something to her, but must have thought better of it.
He placed the paper in the bag instead. Sam looked away as he headed back to the car. At two
feet away, he removed two bottles of water from the bag, then threw the rest in the trash. He got
in and handed her one of the waters.
            “Thanks.” She took the water from him while he looked at her. Fin could tell there was a
change in her demeanor. He frowned.
             “Did I miss something?”
