Beth felt as though she was in labor, but Dawn still put her on cleaning duty. Daryl was on security detail on another floor. She had to take deep breaths as she lifted and moved around the heavy mop and bucket. She dropped the mop and yelled for Dr. Ross, the only one around in the section of the hospital Dawn made her clean. She doubled over and grabbed her stomach, and the once clean floor was covered in her broken water. Lamson was nearby and radioed Daryl.
Dawn ran over, and rather than help Beth, she was furious over the mess she made. Her right hand moved fast, and the slap was heard throughout the hallway. Ross pushed Dawn away and yelled for help.
Daryl was at her side within minutes. She laid on the delivery table, her legs in the stirrups, and Drs. Ross and Edwards right next to her. The contractions felt like they were going to rip her from the inside out and one side to the other, but she had to focus. He was trying to keep her calm, and told her over and over that he loved her. Her head fell back as another ripped through her.
"Remember our deal…Irish Twins?" He smiled, trying to encourage her.
"You're fucking crazy."
"I know. I love you, baby. You're doing a great job. Just focus on me."
There was no time for any Lamaze classes or training, and she wasn't sure what she was doing, but her body was taking over where she wasn't able to keep up the pace. She squeezed Daryl's hand tightly. She heard the door open and Sasha came in, then ran over to hold her other hand.
Dr. Ross said to Daryl "Dad…look over here…here comes your baby." He told Beth that said she needed just one more push.
She nodded, unable to speak through the blinding pain. She squeezed Daryl's hand tightly, her legs shook uncontrollably as she gave a final push and felt a release of all the pressure she'd been feeling in her back and lower abdomen.
"Beautiful baby girl!" Ross said, and seconds later a strong cry filled the room.
"Is she healthy? Is she okay?" Beth asked, as she tried to catch her breath.
Doctors Ross and Edwards examined the baby girl, and Edwards answered "Perfect. Perfectly healthy."
Daryl wrapped his arms around his wife, and they both quietly cried. After a full checkup the baby girl was swaddled in a hospital blanket, then handed to Beth. "Margaret Annette Dixon." Beth said weakly, and Daryl nodded through his tears.
A week after the arrival of the newest Dixon, Rick gave Lori a kiss before she walked down the five flights of stairs to have breakfast with Shannon. Sisters by circumstance. Only one can understand what the other one went through at the hands of those men. He stood at the top of the stairs and kept his eye on his wife until she disappear from his sight. The two women talked about what happened to them. Both were bound and raped, beaten, and burned. Both have been haunted by nightmares.
Shannon told Lori that the only way to get through what happened is to talk about it. Especially with Rick.
"I've told Abe everything. I know it's still fresh with you, but it helps to move on. You know Rick loves you. Tell him what happened. And don't let them keep holding onto you. The Governor is dead. Martinez is dead. Negan is dead. But you're still here. We're still here. The longer you don't get back to normal with Rick, the longer they will always have a hold of you."
Lori's eyes studied her hands, and her nervous habit of picking her cuticles came roaring back. Shannon reached her hands across the table and grabbed Lori's hands to get her attention. "Listen to me. It will get better now, easier," Shannon stood up and walked around to where Lori was sitting. She took a spot on the bench right next to her and pulled her into her arms, rocking her gently. "The pain fades with time. Next month won't be quite so bad, and the month after that, until you can finally move on. Trust me."
"There were so many men. I don't know…I felt so disgusted. I still do. Rick and I have been together since we were in high school. He's the only guy I've ever been with. Now, what do I do?" Lori said, her voice cracking.
After she calmed down, they went into the kitchen to get coffee and food to bring upstairs. They walked up the five flights together, and Lori was one step away from the top when she lost her grip on the food tray. As she started to drop it, she overcompensated for bending over to her right, and bent too far left. She dropped the tray entirely, and lost her balance. She tried to regain her footing, but slipped on some juice. Her stomach, and the baby, got the worst of it. Her belly hit every step as she slid down the staircase. She landed, face first, on the concrete floor. It took just seconds. Shannon screamed for help, and Abe, who was standing around the nurse's station, heard what happened and opened the door. When he saw Lori at the bottom of the stairs he yelled for help, and Ty ran over to help him carry an unconscious Lori to the emergency room. Her water broke and there was blood everywhere.
Doctors Romano and Ross immediately started an IV and had to perform an emergency C-section. Romano started cutting, and a small fetus moved her arms and legs just minutes later. Carol held the baby while Romano stitched up Lori, inside and out. He doubled up on the antibiotics since it wasn't an ideal sterile environment, and then Ross started working on Lori's nose, and left wrist, both of which were broken. He set the nose, and did what he could to tightly wrap the wrist. Her blood pressure was constantly monitored, and Sasha took a warm, damp cloth to help wash her up.
The entire event took twenty minutes. Rick was on security duty at the other side of the hospital. He was radioed about what happened, and was at Lori's side within minutes.
Dawn came into the room and started to complain about the electricity they're using. Rick snapped at her and ordered her out of the room.
He grabbed the back of her head, thrusting his hips, forcing himself deeper inside. She felt her mouth fill with the soft and fleshy member, gagged as she tasted the sweat and stink of the man thick on her tongue. She nearly suffocated, her mouth sealed and her nose buried in the man's pubic hair.
Lori heard Rick's voice calling her. "Lori...baby...I'm right here...Lori..."
She tried to reach for him but couldn't see where he was. Then suddenly, her father is speaking, softly at first, as if he's whispering sweet nothings into Lori's ear, except, behind him she can hear the demonic laughter.
"Lori," His voice was closer. She felt firm hands on her arm. "Baby...wake up...you're having another nightmare."
The all-too real dream was dissolving from her mind, and she was reaching around for something to grab onto. Rick had one arm wrapped around her and was hugging her tightly. She was so sweaty her shirt was clinging to her, and she didn't realize she had been screaming.
She looked around the room and began to panic. "Baby…its okay. It's okay, you're safe." Rick kept saying. He sat on the edge of the mattress, determined not to hurt her.
When she realized she was hooked up to an IV her hands immediately flew to her stomach. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Rick lower his head. "The baby?" She asked, before she noticed her arm was in a cast and she felt swelling around her eyes.
"I'm sorry, baby. It happened after you fell."
"But…I'm thirty weeks. Could he be viable?"
Her heart fell when Rick shook his head no. "Baby girl. She was born with a faint heartbeat, but only lived an hour."
She started to get out of the bed before the pain of her C-section stopped her in her tracks. Rick put his hands on her shoulders and eased her back into bed. She put her hand over her face and quietly cried. Rick gently leaned forward to take her in his arms and her tears poured onto his shoulder. He tried to hide his sobs to be strong for her.
"Where is she?" Lori sobbed.
Knowing that she'd want to see the baby, Rick put the walker version down using a screwdriver to the back of the head. The wound was covered, and the baby girl wore a pink hat.
As soon as she held the baby she didn't want, she started crying.
"Baby girl…I'm so sorry. I would have love you. You would've had the best daddy. She's beautiful" Lori said, as she looked at Rick.
"She is." Rick said, on the verge of tears.
