The weeks went on, and everyone was getting better physically. Six weeks after giving birth, Beth discovered she was pregnant again, so did Shannon.
Rick, Ty and Abe became concerned about the dwindling supply of food. They thought of how they would replenish what they had. They stayed at Grady for long enough. They needed to go onto DC.
Although they were in a hospital, they didn't have basic items such as diapers and baby clothes. With one newborn and two pregnant women, Rick and Abe said that they needed to think about a place where they can grow food, and maybe find some animals. Self-sustainability. That would mean leaving the safety of the hospital, but they need to think about what will happen in the long term. Rick spoke to Doctors Stevens, Edwards and Ross, asking what is around...a farm, anything.
While they were talking, loud voices came over the radios that were attached to Lamson, Hanson and Jeffries heard that there were intruders in the lobby. All of the officers that were in the hospital ran to lobby, guns pointing, and found three men. One said his name was Aaron, and the other two said they were Heath and Spencer. They came here to get medical supplies. They are residents of a community called The Hilltop, and only half an hour away. They have crops, animals, and several of the members there are military. They have shelter, and one doctor. They don't mean any harm, but they need help.
Dawn wanted them brought up to the fifth floor, to her, so she could ask them questions. She didn't like the idea of any of her people leaving. Aaron explained that The Hilltop is a secure location. A row of twenty foot walls, five acres, crops and animals. The house is an old mansion that was renovated years ago.
"The old Barrington house?" Dr. Ross asked.
"Yeah. That's it." Aaron said. "When they re-did the place they made it luxury hotel rooms. We have fresh food, solar power, water, and ammo. We have only one doctor, and we're running low on medical supplies.
"I don't like the idea of this." Dawn said.
Ross spoke up. "I know that place. On a mountain. I went there as a kid on field trips."
"We're protected. From the top floor of the house you had three hundred and sixty degree from the surrounding area. That's how we saw you here. We're only half an hour away."
Abe, a retired Marine, said they would go check the place out. Dawn said no, and ordered the men to leave. Shane stepped forward and grabbed onto the smaller man and tried to force him away. Ty, Rick and Abe stood up, and told Shane to stand down.
Dr. Ross pulled Dawn aside, into another room, and tried to talk her into it. He gave one look to Dr. Edwards, who, as soon as Dawn was out of sight, took the list of things the men were looking for and led them to the supply area. He helped them fill up three bags of IVs, tubing, medical gloves, suture kits and medication. He told Aaron to run to the vehicle and put it in the trunk before Dawn found out. After asking them more questions, Abe left with them, without telling Dawn.
Edwards returned from loading up Aaron's car and said that the place sounds like the real deal. They'll know in a few hours when Abe gets back. He told everyone to get ready, that they'll have to sneak out when Dawn's asleep. The longtime residents of Grady knew what he meant, but Rick's group, who slowly became aware of Dawn's actions and her controlling behavior, had to be filled in about the type of punishment Dawn deals out when she's angry. She and Shane re-ignited their romance they had in the Police Academy and her favoritism toward him was difficult to miss.
When Dr. Ross was talking to Dawn, Dr. Stevens came into the room, pretending to look for something. While her back was to him, Stevens quickly jabbed a needle into Dawn's arm. The woman soon crumbled to the floor, heavily sedated. Her weapons were removed from her and she was put in one of the beds, both of her wrists handcuffed to the bed rails. Stevens, Shepherd and Lamson took Rick, Daryl, Ty and Glenn on a quick tour of the hospital.
Sasha knew what she was doing when she lured Shane into the utility closet, under the pretense of a quickie. When he had his pants down she used his own Taser to render him unconscious, then handcuffed him to the room's sink
They went to one hallway which was blocked off, and when they opened it everyone gagged and winced at the stench. They walked to the elevator and manually opened the door. The smell was overwhelming. Everyone heard the groans.
"This is how she gets rid of people." Stevens said.
"She throws them to the walkers." Rick said, flatly.
"Yeah. It's a five story drop. You're lucky if the fall kills you, otherwise you'll be ripped apart while still breathing." Lamson said, flatly. "We've lost a lot of friends this way. Dawn's sick. She likes to hear the screams."
"Why do you keep her around? She's a danger to everyone." Rick asked.
"She runs the place. She'll threaten you with this." Stevens said, pointing to the elevator shaft.
Rick used his flashlight and held onto the wall as he peered over the edge.
Dawn was still handcuffed to the bed when she was moved to the hallway where the elevator was. She was just left there. Rick, Shepherd, and Dr. Stevens called a meeting, wanting everyone in attendance. They were standing in the middle of the room, chairs pulled around for those who wanted one.
Rick was sitting next to Lori, the kids, and standing around were the officers and doctors. The secret of the elevator shaft was out in the open. Some were horrified, others started crying.
"We thought we were safe here. We're not." Rick told everyone.
They heard some commotion, and some of the cops ran back to the lobby. It was Abe, returning with Aaron. He went up to where the meeting was being held and said the place is legit, he knows most of the Marines there, and they have enough room for everyone.
"I'd say that we strip this place clean. Take everything. All the medical shit, some of the cribs from the baby wing, everything you can. We came back in two cars, so we can fill up both with stuff. We already have cars from the hotel. They have a clinic but it needs medical stuff. Three more doctors will help them. The place is safe. Fresh food, water and solar power. We should go." Abe said, confidently.
It took a few hours, and it was getting dark, but they emptied the entire hospital of all the medical supplies they would need. From IV bags to respirators, suture kits to ultrasound machines and defibrillators. The cars were so full, not only the ones they got from the hotel, but others that belonged to the hospital. Each adult would drive to The Hilltop with a car full of supplies. Almost two dozen vehicles, filled to capacity.
They were all at dinner that night, wanting to get away from the fifth floor and Dawn's screams. As a large group, they ate dinner together, cautiously optimistic about what lies ahead. This could be the last meal they have of powdered shit. Carol and Beth helped with the cleanup, and gathered all the kitchen supplies they thought they could use at the new place. They then piled up sheets, pillow and blankets.
Lori tried to stay awake to keep Rick company, but with chasing after their much larger family, it was impossible.
Everyone was ready to leave, despite the sun setting.
Abe, Ty and Rick were discussing the situation with Dawn and Shane. In Rick's mind, Shane was already dead to him. He tried to rape Lori, and threatened his family. Lamson and Jeffries told Rick that Dawn didn't discriminate when it came to who would be thrown down the shaft. Women, children, the injured, the elderly….
The safety of his family trumped Dawn and Shane, so everyone left the hospital, which was stripped bare, and headed to The Hilltop.
It took less than an hour for the dozen vehicles to enter the gates of the new form of refuge.
