Chapter 3 - Homecoming
Nearly fifteen hours after leaving his house, Jim Brass
walked back through his front door, locking it behind himself. He had been run
off his feet; with 3 other calls after leaving the Mount Charleston scenes in
the very capable hands of Gil Grissom and company. The day shift CSI’s had been
handed 2 of the cases, simply because the night shift was already stretched to
the limit. As he unholstered his gun, popped out the clip, and locked each unit
in its own separate safe, he tried to think of a word to describe precisely how
exhausted he was. Realizing that such a word either didn’t exist, or that his
brain was simply too weary to recall it, he gave up.
It was still early morning, and the house was peacefully
quiet. Thinking that Lynne and Del must be sleeping, and knowing how badly he
needed to do likewise, he slipped into the master bedroom. As he had expected,
he saw his precious Lynne asleep in their bed. Trying to be silent, he stripped
down to his skivvies and slid into his place beside her. He watched her sleep,
resisting the urge to touch her. She was a very light sleeper, and he didn’t
want to wake her up. Remembering the long, lonely years of coming home to an
empty house, of sleeping alone, he silently thanked God for giving him Lynne
and Del, adding a heart-felt promise that this time he would be there for his
family. Before long, he fell asleep himself.
Lynne awoke about 2 hours later, to find Jim’s arm wrapped
around her waist. Glancing at him, she realized he must be dreaming; his eyes
were dancing under the lids, and he was mumbling incoherently. She carefully
eased out from under his arm, and got up. She knew that he had put in one hell
of a long shift, and he needed his sleep.
After a stop in the bathroom, Lynne tip-toed towards the
kitchen. She paused at Del’s door long enough to satisfy herself that the girl
was still asleep. Moving quietly, she completed the trek to the kitchen and
started a pot of coffee. When it was ready, she got herself a mugful, and sat
down at the kitchen table.
“Hi, Mom. When did Jim get home?” The aroma of fresh coffee
had roused Del from her slumbers. She filled her favourite mug, fixed it up the
way she liked it; then sat down beside her mother.
“Good morning, Del. I don’t know exactly when he came in,
but he’s here now. He had a really long shift, so we need to be quiet and let
him sleep. How are you feeling today?” Lynne stroked Del’s back, something she
had always liked.
“I’m fine. What’re we doing today?” Del sipped her coffee.
“Well, I have a meeting about my new job. I have to finish
all the paperwork, and the library director wants to talk to me, to decide
where to put me. By the way, did you know that they have a Whitney branch? What
if they put me there, wouldn’t that be funny?”
Del giggled, “Yeah. Too funny. Lynne Whitney at the Whitney
branch. What time is your meeting?”
“It’s at 3 this afternoon, probably take an hour or so. I’ll
pick up the forms for us to get library cards while I’m there. Other than that,
I don’t have any plans. What would you like to do?”
“You know what I always want to do. Where’s the mall?” Del
was a shop-a-holic. “Oh, that reminds me, I have a question.”
“Del, Sweetie, you always have a question. What’s this one?”
Lynne smiled at her inquisitive daughter.
“It’s about American money. How can people tell the
different bills apart when they’re all the same colour? It’s so much easier
when the five’s are blue, the ten’s are purple, well, you know. When they’re
all different colours.”
“You know, Del, I used to wonder about that myself. You just
have to be careful to actually read the bill. It’ll take some time, but you’ll
get used to it. And, you know, a lot of Americans think our money looks like
Monopoly money. They think it’s not real.” Lynne was enjoying this conversation
with Del.
“Tell me about it. And, they have no idea what a loonie is.
Or a toonie.” Del was referring to the Canadian one and two dollar coins.
“No, those are a uniquely Canadian curse. Sorry, I mean
innovation. So, while we’re discussing money, do you still have any? If you
want to go shopping, you’re gonna need some.” Lynne got up and refilled her
coffee mug.
“Well, actually, I was hoping you’d give me a little more.”
The “one more kid” had struck again.
“Del, I have a question for you now. Have you had a good
look at Jim’s back yard yet?”
“Um, yeah. But, what’s that got to do with anything?” Del
was confused.
“Oh, I just wondered. You like gardening and you’re good
with plants. Which one of those trees out there is the money tree? That’s where
you can get more money, at least until I start having paydays again.”
Del, true to form, rolled her eyes and sighed, “Oh, Mother.
If you want to say no, then just say no.”
“Alright, then. No. I can’t give you any more money. And,
don’t even think about asking Jim. He does enough for us without financing your
never-ending shopping urges.”
Del, suddenly bored with her mother’s company, left the
room. Her parting shot was the usual, “Whatever.”
~~~~~
Jim was awake before Lynne had to leave for her meeting.
After showering and shaving, he found Lynne and Del relaxing on the patio. Del
spotted him, calling out, “Hi, Jim. How was work last night? Any good cases?”
Lynne got up and gave Jim a big hug. “Hi, Honey. I missed
you.” She kissed him.
“Missed you, too, Baby. Hi, Del, sorry but I can’t discuss
work with you. There’re issues around confidentiality, suspect’s rights, stuff
like that. Besides, I learned a long time ago to leave work at the office, and
not bring it home with me. So, what have my two favourite women been doing
today?”
Del spoke first, “Not much.”
“I have that meeting, Jim. In fact, it’s almost time for me
to leave.” Lynne reminded him.
“That’s right, I remember.” Jim was thoughtful for a few
seconds, “Here’s an idea, Lynne, why
don’t I drop you off, and take Del sight-seeing. Call my cell phone when you’re
done, and then I’ll pick you up and buy us all dinner. There’s plenty of time
for me to bring you home again before I have to be back at work.”
“Great idea, Jim.” was Del’s instant reply.
“Jim, that’s a wonderful plan. Let’s do it. I’ll just go get
ready. Del, you need to get ready, too.” Lynne headed toward the house.
Del had a question for Jim, “When we have supper, can I get
a dessert? I feel like something with chocolate syrup poured all over it. Oh,
and lots of whipped cream.” She had no idea why the two adults were suddenly
blushing and trying hard not to giggle.
