Chapter
Three
Stephanie
screamed when Blackie hit Sonny. He went down and she rushed to
Sonny’s aid. At the same time, Sonny’s guards jumped to restrain
Blackie.
“What
the hell was that for?” Stephanie demanded, glaring at Blackie.
“What
the hell are you doing with him?” he countered.
“What
business is it of yours, Parrish?” Sonny spit out, as he stood up.
He nodded to the guards to release him.
Stephanie
looked from Sonny to Blackie. “What’s going on here?” she asked,
“How do you know each other?”
The
two men stared at each other. “Do you want to tell her or shall
I, Blackie?” Sonny taunted.
Without
a word, Blackie turned away from him and extended his hand to Stephanie.
“Come on, we’re leaving.”
Stephanie
frowned. “What?” She shook her head. “I’m not going anywhere
until you tell me what’s going on.”
Blackie
sighed. “Stephanie, please. We’ll talk later.”
Looking
into his eyes, she saw a pleading in them. This was not the Albert
she knew. His eyes were dark and clouded, unlike the way they usually
were. It was like looking at a stranger through her friend’s eyes.
She
turned to Sonny. “Thank you, Sonny, for all your help.”
“Stephanie,
come on,” Blackie insisted.
“Alright!
Just wait, Albert,” she told him.
As
she walked past Sonny, he stopped her. “It was nice meeting you,
Stephanie.” He took her hand and kissed it just above her knuckles.
Blackie
reached toward Stephanie to pull her away from Sonny but she side-stepped
him. They walked wordlessly side by side toward the mechanic’s
garage. Blackie waited while she spoke with Sam about her car and
wrote a check for the repairs.
“Thank
you so much,” Stephanie spoke as he handed her the keys to her car.
“I really appreciate you working on it on such short notice.”
“Anything
for a friend of Mr. Corinthos,” Sam stated.
Blackie
scoffed prompting Stephanie to glance over at him. He looked away
and bit his lip to keep from commenting further. Stephanie frowned.
What is going on with him? She wondered.
Turning
back to Stan, she shook his hand and bid him goodbye. Blackie followed
her outside. Inserting her key into the lock, Stephanie paused.
“I was planning to drive back to Manhattan but you look like hell,
Albert,” she explained, “if you want to stay and get some rest,
I won’t mind.”
Blackie
closed his eyes and sighed. It was true, he was exhausted, but
now that he had run into Sonny Corinthos he wasn’t sure he wanted
to stick around Port Charles for very long.
Before
he was able to answer Stephanie, he heard his name called. “Blackie?
Blackie Parrish?”
He
turned around and saw Bobbie Spencer approaching, followed by a
teenage boy. “Bobbie.”
“I
don’t believe it!” she exclaimed as she threw her arms around his
neck. “It is you!”
Blackie
embraced his old friend warmly. “It’s been a long time, Bobbie.”
She
pulled back and smiled. “Too long,” she told him, adding, “how
long have you been back in Port Charles?”
“I
just got in today,” he replied, “my friend had car trouble and I
thought she might need some help.”
Bobbie
looked over at Stephanie. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to ignore you,”
she laughed at herself, “I was just excited to see Blackie. Anyway,
I’m Bobbie Spencer.”
Blackie
shook his head. “I’m sorry, Bobbie Spencer, meet Stephanie Donovan.”
Stephanie
nodded at Bobbie with a smile. “Nice to meet you.”
“Nice
to meet you too, Stephanie.” Turning to Lucas, Bobbie put her hand
on his shoulder. “And I’d like to introduce my son, Lucas,” she
said. To Lucas, she explained, “Blackie is an old family friend
from way back.”
Lucas
shook Blackie’s hand. “It’s good to meet you, sir.”
“Sir?”
Blackie laughed. “That makes me feel old. Just call me ‘Blackie’
if you want, Lucas.” He turned back to Bobbie. “’Lucas’, huh?
Would I be correct in assuming he’s named for your brother?”
Bobbie
laughed. “You would be,” she said.
Stephanie
had been watching Blackie’s rapport with Bobbie and was enthralled.
Who was this man called ‘Blackie’, she wondered. She was beginning
to question whether she really ever knew her friend ‘Albert’ as
well as she thought she did.
Bobbie
was asking Blackie another question so Stephanie shook herself so
she could focus on what they were saying.
“Why
don’t you two come over to my place and we can catch up a little
more?” Bobbie suggested, “you’re not in any hurry to leave, are
you?”
Blackie
looked at Stephanie. “No, I guess we’re not.” Stephanie nodded
her head in agreement. “I guess we could come over for awhile.”
“Great!
And maybe I can get Luke to come over as well,” Bobbie said, “that
is, if I can find him.”

Blackie
and Stephanie sat uncomfortably in the living room of Bobbie’s brown-stone
while Bobbie fussed in the kitchen preparing snacks for her guests.
“Bobbie, I told you not to make a fuss,” Blackie insisted, “we
weren’t expecting to run into each other so you don’t have to feed
us.”
“Don’t
worry, Blackie,” Bobbie called from the kitchen, “it’s no problem.”
Blackie
sat back in his chair and looked over at Stephanie. They hadn’t
had a chance to talk about what had happened so the tension was
still high between them.
Stephanie
cleared her throat. “Why does she keep calling you ‘Blackie’?”
The question had been running through her mind ever since she first
heard Sonny use the name.
Blackie
smirked. “I’m sort of surprised it took you so long to ask me that,”
he told her. Sighing, he added, “it’s a name I used to go by a
very long time ago. A lifetime ago, it feels like. I was a different
person back then.”
“How
do you know Sonny?” Stephanie asked.
Blackie
waved his hand in a dismissive manner. “Corinthos,” he uttered
through gritted teeth. “I don’t want to talk about him.”
Before
Stephanie could continue, Bobbie entered the room carrying a tray
loaded with coffee and cookies. “Here we go,” she smiled as she
set down the tray on the coffee table. She handed Stephanie a cup
before she sat down. “Cream and sugar?”
Stephanie returned her
smile. “Thank you,” she replied, as she reached for the creamer.
“Your house is beautiful, Bobbie,” she said, as the three sat back
and got to know each other.
An
hour later...
Bobbie walked Blackie
and Stephanie to the front door of the brown-stone. “Are you sure
you won’t stay here tonight?” Bobbie was asking. “It’s a long drive
back to Manhattan. And the weather is expected to get really bad
again.”
“Yeah, it’s alright, Bobbie,”
Blackie assured her, “we have to get back to the city.”
Bobbie hugged Blackie
good-bye and waved to Stephanie. “It was nice meeting you, Steph,”
she said warmly.
“You too, Bobbie,” Stephanie
smiled.
Bobbie closed the door
after they turned to walk down the icy steps of the brown-stone.
Blackie took the keys to the car and let himself in the driver’s
seat.
“Are you sure you want
to drive?” Stephanie asked. “You still look exhausted.”
He nodded silently. “Just
until we get out of the city limits, then you can take over.”
Unfortunately for them,
as soon as they reached the city limits, the skies opened up and
snow began to fall again. It came down fast and furiously. Blackie
was forced to turn the car around and head back into Port Charles.
“You think your friend's
offer still stands for a place to stay?” Stephanie asked, as she
wiped the windshield in front of her.
Blackie nodded. “We'll
stop and see if she's still home,” he replied. “If not, we'll see
if Kelly's has any rooms for the night.”
They pulled up to Bobbie's
brown-stone thirty minutes later. The snow was coming down even
harder. Blackie got out of the car first and told Stephanie to
stay in case Bobbie wasn't home.
As it happened, Bobbie
had been called into work not long after Blackie and Stephanie left,
so Blackie returned to the car almost immediately.
“What's this Kelly's you
mentioned?” Stephanie asked him, as Blackie shook the snow out of
his hair.
“Kelly's Diner,” he answered,
“they have rooms to rent upstairs. We'll see if there's a vacancy
tonight.”
He eased the car back
onto the street and made his way to Kelly's. The roads were slick
so he had to go slow. They finally made it to the diner and found
two rooms. They went to their separate rooms to change out of wet
clothes.
Stephanie was first to
arrive back downstairs. She took a seat at the counter to wait
for Blackie.
“Fancy meeting you here.”
Stephanie turned around
to see Sonny behind her grinning at her. “Sonny, what are you doing
here?”
“What can I say?” Sonny
began with a shrug, “I missed you. So imagine how surprised and
glad I was to see you here.”
“Blackie is upstairs,
you know,” Stephanie warned him. “He'll be right down.”
“Who cares?” Sonny chuckled.
“I'm not scared of him.”
Stephanie laughed with
him. “Are you going to tell me why you two hate each other?” she
asked, adding, “or even better, how you two know each other?”
Sonny shrugged. “What
did he tell you?”
Stephanie shook her head.
“Nothing less than what you've told me,” she frowned.
Sonny smiled at her again.
“Has anyone told you you're cute when you frown?”
Stephanie sighed. “Oh
no, don't change the subject, Corinthos,” she warned him. “How
do you know Blackie? Or Albert, as I know him.”
“Get away from her, Corinthos,”
Blackie growled from where he stood by the stairs. He stepped closer
and went nose-to-nose with Sonny.
Stephanie jumped from
her stool and got in between them. “That's it, I've had enough
of both of your macho acts!” she exclaimed. “Go ahead and beat
each other to a bloody pulp. I'm getting out of here.”
She grabbed her purse
and stormed out of the diner. Before Sonny and Blackie had a chance
to do anything, they heard her scream outside and they both ran
out of the diner to her rescue.
