Episode 03: Reunion
Honor was lying on her back on one of the couches in the common room, staring up at the ceiling, lost in thought. She hadn’t seen the members of Mutant X since they’d gone off chasing that potential mutant a few hours ago. After Adam had finished his tests, he’d busied himself in analyzing them, leaving her all alone in Sanctuary. Without any books of any interest to her to read or anyone to talk to, she was starting to wonder if she’d made a mistake by agreeing to stay here.
Her view of the ceiling was blocked by a head imposing itself above her head. She blinked in surprise and the face grinned boyishly. “Bored?” he asked.
Jesse moved away to let her sit up. “When you get back?” she asked, glad to have someone to talk to.
“Not to long ago,” he replied, sitting down beside her, wincing.
She narrowed her eyes. “Are you ok there?”
“Yeah why?”
“You have a nasty bruise on your head, almost like someone hit you,” she said, reaching for his head and touching his forehead lightly.
He winced. The bruise hurt, but her touch was gentle. Her fingers were soft and there was concern in her eyes. “If you think that’s bad, you should see the one that I think I have on my back. I got thrown against a wall,” he added by way of explanation.
Honor gave him an odd look. “No one’s taken care of that?” He shook his head. “That’s no good. Bruises aren’t really anything to worry about, but you might have more serious injuries that could get worse if they aren’t looked after.”
Jesse blinked in surprise at her concern. “I’m not too worried about it, to be completely honest.”
“You should be,” she said crossly. “Where does Adam keep the medical supplies?”
“You’re going to do this yourself?”
“I’ve had practice.” She offered no further explanation that that simple statement.
“I’ll go get some and meet you back here,” he told her, getting up and heading down the hallway. He returned a few minutes later with an armful of supplies. “I wasn’t really sure what you needed, so I grabbed what I could. Do you want to do this here?”
“It’s up to you, but privacy might be the best idea.”
Jesse shook his head. Had he heard her right? “My room or yours?”
“Again, your preference.” She shrugged. “Wherever you would feel more comfortable.”
He nodded, his stomach making a quick journey up into his throat. “My room.” He led her down the hallway to his room and let her in, closing the door behind them. He set the supplies down on his desk.
Honor walked over to the desk and sorted through the supplies to get what she needed. Without looking at Jesse she said, “Take off your shirt and sit down on your bed.” She heard the rustling of cloth and turned to see a topless Jesse perched on the edge of his bed. She was glad that she was holding a roll of bandages in one hand and a jar of antibiotic in the other as the sight made her breath catch in her throat. He was well built and nicely muscled. She had to admit to herself that he was even a little bit cute.
Jesse watched her move towards him and his pulse raced. Intellectually, he knew that she was just trying to help. What the rest of him thought was a completely different story. He tried to keep calm as she sat down behind him, but failed when she applied some of the antibiotic cream to his battered skin. He hissed a little in pain.
“You’d think that someone with your kind of power would be able to avoid this kind of thing.”
“It’s really hard to use them when you get caught off guard,” he replied sourly, hissing as the antiseptic got into another scrape.
“I see.” Her hand moved away for a moment before coming back with another cream. This one soothed the ache in his back. She didn’t confine her attentions to the bruised areas, but rubbed the ointment on his shoulders and neck as well.
He closed his eyes, enjoying the feeling of her hands on his skin. It felt like it had been ages since the last time a woman had touched him like this. If he’d been a cat, he would have started purring. She paused briefly, coming back with more of the soothing ointment. This time her hands were gentler, focusing more on rubbing it into the bruised areas of his skin.
It took him a few moments to realize that she’d stopped. He opened his eyes, blinking. He turned to look at her. She looked back with an amused expression on her face.
“You fell asleep,” she told him.
“I’m not really surprised. That was really, really relaxing.” He reached out and placed a hand on her cheek. “Thank you.”
She blushed. “You’re welcome. I’m finished now, so I’ll get out of your hair,” she said, putting the lids back on the jars.
“There’s no hurry,” he told her, putting his hand down over hers. She looked back at him as he scooted a little closer. “Please stay.”
“I really should return this stuff and see if Adam learned anything from the last round of tests.”
“Are you sure it can’t wait?” he asked, leaning a little closer.
She froze, looking him in the eye. She’d seen that look before, but never directed at her. She’d always seen it on the faces of boys looking at her old school friends or on actors. For years, she’d wanted to see that look aimed at her. Honor set the jars aside, licking her lips to restore their moisture.
“Maybe it can, but not for long.”
By now, Jesse had scooted close enough that his thigh was up against hers. He brought his hand back up to her face, brushing her skin. Carefully, he brought the other hand up and placed it on her other cheek. “Your skin is so soft,” he murmured.
“I’m sure you didn’t ask me to stay just to tell me that.”
He lowered his hands and picked up hers, pressing his lips to her fingers, all the while keeping his eyes locked on hers. Her hands were small and delicate. He hadn’t noticed that when she was rubbing his back. Amazing. He watched as her eye color went from a fairly ordinary green to a brighter almost emerald green.
Her hands were small enough to hold in one of his, so he took one hand and placed it back on her cheek. He could feel her hands shaking as he brought his face a little closer to hers. He hesitated a moment before brushing her lips with his. Seeing that she didn’t pull away, he kissed her, releasing her hands to use his other hand for balance.
Her hands free, she placed them on his bare chest, her fingers dancing over the skin. Her heart was pounding. This was the last thing she’d expected. Never in her wildest dreams would she have thought she’d meet someone who didn’t care about her mutation. When she’d placed her hands on his chest, her new telempathic abilities had chosen that moment to flare up, giving her a good read of what Jesse was feeling. It made her heart beat faster. He wasn’t pretending to like her, to be interested in her as a person.
His kiss became more insistent, almost hungry. She could feel that he was holding back, that he was nervous, but that was all that she got. She cursed mentally. Just when the added mutation would have been of use, it stopped doing anything.
Jesse pulled back and looked at her, his eyes asking what he couldn’t trust his voice to. In reply, she ran her hands around from his chest to his back and kissed him as insistently as he had before he stopped.
Taking that as a yes, he ran his hands through her long red hair, kissing her neck and throat. He inhaled her sweet scent. It was floral, but he couldn’t quite place it. She pressed herself up against his chest. While she wasn’t quite as well-built as Shalimar, she was still quite nicely endowed. He could feel the lace of her bra through the thin tank top. It was the one she’d worn originally and had a button up front. His hands ran down her arms to her waist, pushing her down onto the mattress, pleased that she didn’t resist at all. He lay down beside her, using one arm to support himself and the other rested on her stomach as his lips met hers again
She twisted her body up against his. This moved his hand onto her waist. She got as close to him as she could. He moved his arm to wrap it round behind her, putting them on the same level as he ran his hand up from her waist to half way up her torso. It slipped around to the front in between them, playing with the buttons on her shirt.
As he got the first button undone, there was a knock on the door. Jesse cursed mentally and sat up, trying to calm himself down while putting his shirt back on. “Who is it?” he asked, trying not to sound as annoyed as he felt.
“It’s me Jesse,” Brennan answered. “You busy?”
“What’s up?”
“That woman’s awake now. Adam wants us to find out what the deal is.”
Jesse got up and opened the door a crack, allowing Honor the chance to slip out of view. “He says he knows her, so why doesn’t he talk to her?”
“Emma thinks he’s afraid to.” Brennan shrugged. “You might want to make it snappy. Last I saw, things were starting to fly around in there.”
“Right. I’ll be right there.”
The older man gave him a strange look. “Are you ok? You seem kinda short of breath there.”
“I’m fine. See you in a bit,” he said, closing the door and turning to Honor. She was busily gathering up the medical supplies. He walked over and sat down beside her. “So much for that. Another time perhaps?”
“Perhaps,” she said without looking up.
Brushing the hair away from her neck, he planted a light kiss on her skin. “I’m really sorry about this, but I have to go.”
She shook her head. “Don’t worry about it. You have things to do.” She turned to face him, touching his cheek. “Go on. Your friends will wonder if you take to long.”
He wanted to stay with her, to hold her close and smell that sweet floral scent, but he knew she was right. He stood, bending down to kiss her on the forehead before leaving.
Honor watched him leave and rubbed her cheeks. She thought that she’d done a good job of hiding her disappointment at the interruption, but she wasn’t really sure. Again, that would have been a good time for her new ability to surface, but she wasn’t so lucky there. She closed her eyes and flopped down on his bed. She could still feel his hands on her skin and taste his lips on hers. Putting her head down on his pillow, she could detect a faint trace of his smell. It was a nice smell. She rolled over and sat back up again, shaking her head.
Gathering the medical supplies in her arms, she stood up and left.
Jesse joined the others in the infirmary and had to duck as a container went whizzing past his head. The woman that Adam had identified as Claudia was straining against the restraints, demanding that they let her go. Shalimar and Emma were staying as far away from her as they could. He made his way over to Brennan.
“What’s going on?”
“I’m not sure,” he replied. “Emma tried to talk to her, but she kept demanding that she release her and tell her where the girl is.”
“The one she was talking about earlier?” He nodded. “Have we been able to get a name out of her?”
“She claims that we should know who she’s talking about.” Emma rolled her eyes. “Remember that man she was pummeling because she thought he knew something?”
“It’s a good thing she’s tied down,” Brennan said, nodding.
Jesse walked towards Claudia, phasing his body so that none of the objects flying around the room would hurt him. The closer he got, the fewer there were, so it was safe to return his body to normal when he got beside her. She turned, her eyes full of malice, but she didn’t send him flying. He figured that she was too occupied with manipulating the loose objects to use her powers on anything else.
“What do you want?” she snarled.
“You might be right,” he said slowly. “We might know something about this girl you keep asking for, but in order to be sure that we’re talking about the same person, you need to help us out. Tell us about her. Even a physical description would help if you don’t want to tell us her name.”
She eyed him suspiciously. “How do I know you can be trusted? You’re friends with those two,” she said indicating Emma and Shalimar. “They know who I’m talking about.”
“Forget about them and humor me. Is she tall or short? What color is her hair? We’ve all helped lots of people, so it’s a little hard for us to instantly know who you’d be talking about.”
Some of the objects fell to the ground. “I suppose that it makes sense,” she said slowly.
“How about it?”
“Let me go and I’ll tell you.”
“Ah, now how do I know if you can be trusted to keep your word?”
“Let me go. I’ll tell you about her and stop the objects from moving.”
“Promise not to attack my friends.”
“I won’t attack anyone in this room.”
Jesse release the restraints on her ankles and then on her hands. The objects promptly fell to the floor with a very loud clatter. She sat up, rubbing her wrists and glared at the girls. She looked at Jesse.
“Good,” she said. “She’s not very tall, shorter than you, long red hair, and green eyes. She’s shy. Her mutation is very unstable, so you’d best hand her over or things could get worse.”
“When did she go missing?”
“Only a few days ago.”
Brennan, Emma, and Shalimar exchanged a look. “Her name wouldn’t happen to be Honor, would it?” Brennan asked.
She sat up. “Yes, that’s her. Where is she?”
“I’ll go get her,” Jesse said and left the room.
Claudia started to go after him, but thought better of it when her feet touched the ground. The restraints had cut off some of the circulation to her feet and hey tingled. Cursing, she swung them back up.
“How are things going?” Adam asked, walking into the room. “Where’s Jesse off to in such a hurry?”
Claudia turned at the sound of his voice. “Who are you?” she demanded, leaning forward.
He frowned, taking a couple steps towards her. “Claudia, don’t you recognize me?”
She narrowed her eyes. “Should I?”
“We used to be friends.”
She looked skeptical. “Really. Somehow I doubt that.”
Emma looked from one to the other. “Adam, I think she means it. I’m not sensing any sort of recognition from her.”
“Adam?” she asked. “That’s your name?” He nodded. “I’ve only ever known one Adam that could make a claim of friendship, one Adam Kane.”
“That’s my name.”
A jar of cotton swabs lifted off the ground and made for his head, her blue eyes blazed angrily. “I wondered if I would ever bump into you again,” she said as he dodged out of its path.
Adam looked at her, puzzled. “What was that for?”
“Be glad that I can’t walk right now or I’d make you suffer for what you did.”
“What I did?” He was clearly confused. “What are you talking about?”
Her reply was cut off by Honor running into the room and wrapping her arms around her. She looked down at the girl and hugged her back. “You’re safe.”
Honor pulled back. “Don’t sound so shocked, Claudia. I’m not in any danger here.”
“You have some explaining to do, young lady,” Claudia scolded.
She sighed. “Yeah, I know, and all of this has a good reason, I promise.” She turned to Adam. “I’m going to take her to my room so that we can talk in private.”
He nodded and let them through. Claudia glared at him as she went past but didn’t throw anything else at him.
Brennan looked at him. “What was that all about?”
“I’d really like to know the answer to that myself,” Adam replied.
