Chapter Three
12:00:00pm
Jack yelled over the com but no one was responding, he checked the satellite feed but from its angle it had no way of showing inside the parking lot. He yelled again over the com again, but again, no reply. He slammed his headset onto the desk and leaned back into his chair, gaining some curious looks from the people down on the floor, dialling out, Adam answered his phone.
“Adam.”
“Yeah, Adam it’s Jack. I need you to get the satellite feed Kim was watching, I’ve got the address, I’ll send it down, I need you to see if you can get infrared on it to see what happened in the parking lot.”
“It’ll only be red dots Jack.”
“I still need to know what happened, that might give us a clue.”
“Alright, I’ll just finish this then I’ll get on it.”
“NO, Adam, now! Stop whatever you’re doing, this takes priority.”
“Alright Jack.” The phone clicked off as Jack sent the address down, just as he did, he heard a mumbled voice. Grabbing his headset, he shoved it on to hear Chase calling to the other agents out there.
“Chase!” Jack cut in. “Chase what happened.”
“Jack?”
“Yeah!”
“They’ve got the President, and Kim.” Chase replied quickly.
“Where’s Henley.” Jack asked urgently.
“They have her too.”
“DAMN IT!” Jack cursed loudly. “How did it happen Chase?”
“A van approached, we all pulled out our weapons, but someone hit me over the head from behind.”
“Any idea where they’ve headed?”
“None. It was a white van, dark plates, possibly blacked out.”
“Ok, I’ll get a search on it.” Jack replied, picking up the phone.
“Adam.” Adam replied hastily.
“Yeah Adam, it’s Jack. Scrap that, I got hold of Chase. I need you to check the cameras outside the mall parking lot, look for a white van, we need to know where it’s heading.”
“Got it Jack.”
The phone clicked off as Jack leaned forward into his hands. Kim and Laura gone.
12:10:49pm
Kim struggled against her bonds, her blindfold slipping down just enough for her to see partially out of her right eye. She looked to her right, the President next to her against the wall of the van, gagged, blindfolded and tied. Across from them, Laura in the same situation. From her left, a man approached her and slammed her against the wall.
“Stop struggling.” He growled. “It won’t help.”
Kim mumbled against the tape over her mouth that he was an asshole, but it made no difference. The van swerved to the right, toppling Kim onto the floor. Laughing, the man grabbed her arms and pushed her back onto her seat next to the President. Luckily he hadn’t seen that her eye was partially exposed. She looked around as discretely as she could. The men in the back with them were all in black, each with an automatic shotgun. The man nearest at her that had spoken to her had long straggling brown hair and a scar over the bridge of his nose. To the back of the van were six men, one on either side of Laura Henley, one on the other side of the President to her, and three against the doors. All of these had balaclava masks rolled up, covering their hair, but their faces were thick and worn, unfortunately, with so little visibility in the back of the van, she couldn’t see much.
The van screeched to a stop and a side door opened. Kim looked out as discretely as she could, a red brick building right in front of her, a painted white one next to it. They were somewhere outside of down town from the looks of it. She scanned some more, seeing a street sign, though only able to see the first two letters, all she could see was B A before the van door obstructed her view, trying to edge to the side, she was suddenly pinned to the wall.
“You’re not going anywhere, Honey.” The long haired man growled. “This isn’t your stop.” Kim sat still, trying to see anything else, but he was in front of her now so all she could see was his shirt. The man moved past her and grabbed the President, pulling him up. He stumbled slightly as Laura Henley began struggling violently, trying to stop them, but the men on either side of her pinned her back, laughing. As the President was pulled out of the van by three of the men, the door slid shut and the van sped off again.
12:16:21pm
Jack leaned over Adam’s station, the number plate on the van coming up slowly. It was so blacked out though, that it could day hours to discover it. He banged his hand down on the desk, moving back to the steps, taking a few steps up and calling for attention.
“Everyone, the President has been abducted, along with his security detail, a Miss Laura Henley, and Kim Bauer of CTU. This has to be everyone’s primary objective. We need to find them!”
12:18:05pm
Chase opened the car door, Kim’s things were still there, untouched from when she had gotten out of the car. Getting into the driving seat, he slammed his hands down on the wheel angrily before starting the engine. He turned out of the parking lot; having given the team the orders to question everyone and bring in anyone they thought could have more information. Clicking his phone into the in-car system, he dialled for Jack.
“Bauer,” Jack answered curtly, knowing that he snapped to someone from division he’d be in more trouble than he already had to deal with.
“Jack, it’s Chase. Any news?”
“No, not yet. We’ve found the van but the plates could take a while to clear up. Adam trying to track its movements, but so far they’re eluding us.” Jack spat angrily. He couldn’t blame Chase for what had happened, but he didn’t have to be happy with his former partner and current employee.
“Ok, Swat and our other agents are sorting the people here, I’m on my way back.”
“Chase, stay out there, you could be useful there.” Jack replied.
“We’ve got twenty men here, Jack.”
“Damn it, Chase, that’s an order. If I need someone interrogating there, I want it to be you.” Jack snapped again.
“Fine Jack.” Chase replied angrily, ending the call and swerving the SUV into a u-turn.
12:22:36pm
Laura struggled relentlessly against the two men, but their grips just got tighter until she felt her arms would burst. Where was Jack? He had gotten her out of a situation like this before, why wasn’t he here? Leaning her head back against the cool metal of the van wall, it pulled to another stop.
“Come on Love.” A man opposite her growled. Laura waited to be hauled up, but nothing came. She heard the side door next to the man on her right open again, and steps taken. She screamed against her gag, but the man on her left elbowed her in the temple, letting her slump into the other man’s lap.
Kim watched in terror, nothing like this had happened in years, and for over eight years now, she’d mainly been in CTU when they had happened. Nothing like this had happened since… she gasped, since the day her mother had been murdered. The man next to her grabbed her arm and pulled her to standing, dragging her out of the van and slamming the door behind them.
The bright blue of the LA sky blinded her partial vision as she was dragged away from the van, the tyres squealing and the van pulling away. She stepped with the men, tripping occasionally from her lack of sight. In front of her, one of the men unlocked a door while the other pushed her inside until she fell forwards, banging her head.
A warm trickle of blood ran down her forehead and into her hair as she rolled over and pushed herself up, only to be grabbed by one of the men again and pulled into the next room. The dark of the room starkly contrasted the outside. With a thump, they pushed her into a chair and unlocked her cuffs, moving them until they interlocked with its bars. Looking through the droop in the blindfold she blinked, adjusting to the light. The two men were in front of her, one on a cell phone.
“Well, what do you want me to do with her?” He asked angrily. He was silent as the man on the phone replied, before speaking again.
“You can’t be serious? All this trouble and we just…” He stopped, obviously cut off by the other man.
“She’s seen us ‘Ves.” He sneered. Again, he waited for a moment before continuing.
“Fine, fine! We’ll be there in thirty minutes!” He snapped the phone shut and turned to the other man.
“He wants us to let her go. Says she’s no use. Only wanted Logan and the other girl.” He snarled.
“We let her go, she’ll see us.” The other man replied. He looked down at Kim before looking back to the first man. “Why don’t we just leave her here. She breaks out by herself, she breaks out, if not, she can stay here and rot.” The first man laughed.
“Get the stuff together then, we’re off.” They both left the room as Kim began panicking, she had no way out of the chair, but before she could move, the first man was back. He looked down at Kim before moving to leaning over her, whispering in her ear.
“I’m gonna leave the keys somewhere in this room. You find them in that state. Well done.” He stood up straight; his body shaking with violent laughter as he moved back and silently placed the keys on the mantelpiece. Kim silently praised heaven that her blindfold had dropped just enough.
12:30:49pm
Chase looked angrily around the front of the mall, anyone could do this job, he thought sourly. This was as annoying as being left in office to file paperwork. The swat and CTU team had everything under control. The five men they’d caught had all talked easily, and they were only shooters anyway, paid upfront to cause a riot, something they’d done well in Chase’s opinion.
The CTU agents were now taking names and contact numbers of all the witnesses for if they needed to contact them after problems with their preliminary statements while the SWAT team cleared up. Balls to Jack’s order, Chase thought angrily. I’m going back to CTU.
12:33:51pm
The door slammed shut behind the two men and the sound of a car started up, its tyres skidding against the hot tarmac burning under the LA sun. Kim listened silently until the sound of the car had completely disappeared before Kim moved. Putting her cheek against her shoulder she rubbed the blindfold down until it slipped over her nose and fell limp around her neck. Standing up as straight as she could while still chained to the chair, she walked slowly over to the mantelpiece, picking up the keys with her teeth and dropping them onto the lower tabletop. Turning around with her back to the table, she set the chair down and leaned back on the two back legs until her fingers clasped onto the small silver keys. Picking them up, she quickly found the lock and pushed the key in, turning it and releasing her wrist. She pulled the handcuffs through the bars in the chair and undid the other wrist, slipping the handcuffs into her pocket, keys in the other, she pulled off the duct tape over her mouth and chucked it to the floor, running to the front door and looking around. The area was deserted. Running back into the living room, she searched frantically for a phone, but with no luck.
Sprinting back into the hallway, she pelted up the stairs and into the main bedroom, on the bedside table, a white phone sat next to the lamp. Grabbing it, she dialled quickly, straight to her father’s line at CTU.
“Bauer.” Jack answered.
“Dad, it’s me.” Kim panted.
“Oh my god, Kim. Are you alright?” Jack gasped, relief rushing through him.
“Yes, dad I’m fine.” Jack nodded with relief, hearing his daughter’s voice.
“Kim, is Laura with you?” He asked slowly.
“No, they dropped off the President from the van first, then me. Henley was still in the van.” Kim explained.
“Ok, where are you?”
“I don’t know. I’m in a house in a residential area, I have no idea where.”
“Ok, let me put a tracker on the call.” For a minute there was silence as Jack ordered Chloe to put the tracker on. “Kim, how did you get away?”
“They left me here. We got here and they made a phone call, the guy then said that they didn’t need me and to let me go. So they left the keys on the mantle piece and left, they didn’t realise I could see over my blindfold.”
“Kim, did you see anything?”
“Yes!” Kim replied quickly, almost having completely forgotten it. “When they dropped the President off, there were two buildings next to the van, would have been the passenger side. The one right on the corner was a red brick building, the one next to it is a painted white building. I could see part of the street sign, I tried to move but they pinned me back. The first two letters of the street they stopped on were Beta Alpha.”
“Beta Alpha, ok got that, honey.” Jack looked up as Chloe gave him the thumbs up on the trace.
“OK Kim, we’ve got your location, I’m going to send Chase to get you.”
“Ok Dad, see you soon.” Kim put down the phone.
12:42:37pm
Laura shuddered, having been in the van for almost forty-five minutes, her body was shaking with the movement. Even after she had come around, the hands gripping her arms were painfully tight when the van finally pulled to a stop. Laura screamed against a bond, earning herself a hard slap across the face. Tears continued to soak into her blindfold as they grabbed her and pulled her to her feet, dragging her out of the van. Even through the blindfold, she could sense the brightness they had entered. The sun burned her skin as they dragged her across a lawn and into a house.
“Let me go!” Laura screamed through her gag as another blow was struck to her face.
“How many times do I have to tell you?” The man holding her growled. “You need to shut the fuck up!” Sobbing through her gag, Laura did as she was told, as they pushed her through to the next room, and toppled her onto a bed.
12:46:59pm
“Edmunds?” Chase answered, turning left onto Kedler.
“Chase, it’s Jack.”
“Jack, everything alright?”
“We’ve found Kim. She’s in a house, number 24 on Lakeland.” Jack explained.
“Oh thank god, is she alright?”
“Yeah, she’s fine. Turned out they didn’t need her so they left her chained in the house, she managed to get free and phone us from the house phone. Can you go pick her up?”
Chase opened up his satellite feed in the car and looked at the roads.
“Yeah, sure Jack, I’m only five minutes away.”
“OK, good, Chase please hurry, we need Kim back here.”
“I will. See you in fifteen minutes.”
Chase hung up the phone and immediately turned left, sighing with relief that Kim was alright.
12:49:13pm
Undoing the cuffs around Laura’s wrists, they immediately clipped her into another pair, a longer chain attached to the headboard of the bed. She rested her head against the covers, preying they were only keeping her because she had witnessed the President’s kidnap. The two men holding her left the room, but leaving the door slightly open, she was just able to hear their conversation.
“The other one was taken care of?” The first asked, his deep southern accent rumbling through the air.
“They chained her to a chair and left her. We don’t need her.” The second replied.
“What they need with this one? I doubt anyone will miss her.” The first laughed.
“This one has information, stuff that can help us. But she’s trained; we may need to…” the second laughed lightly, a mocking cruel bark. “Rough her up a bit.”
“Got any more orders?”
“Nah, not yet. We just need to start, they doubt the President will speak so we need to work on her fast.”
Laura kept her head against the covers, tears now leaking from the blindfold and running down across her cheeks and into her hair, dampening the covers below as the men came back into the room, sick smiles spreading across their faces.
12:54:51pm
Jack held his head in his hands, his breath coming long but shallow, it was one thing to have a terrorist attack when he could ask the President for his permission on how to proceed, but with the President in the middle of this attack, and unreachable, nobody knowing where to even begin looking for him apart from Kim’s account. He wasn’t even sure how reliable it would be, she was under a lot of stress at the time, she might not have seen a BA, maybe it was DA, or PA, he couldn’t tell, he would be able to tell more after the debrief. Not that there was really time for the debrief, it wasn’t like Kim would be going home, they needed her there. He looked up at the computer, tapping his index finger against his temple, picking up the phone.
“Adam.”
“Adam, it’s Jack again.” Jack sighed in frustration. “How are we doing on that van?”
“We’ve got leaving the mall parking lot, but after that it’s getting difficult, Jack. They keep doubling back.”
“Adam, this is our best lead on the President and Henley.”
“And Kim, Jack.” Adam added nervously. There was no way Jack Bauer would have forgotten about his daughter.
“No, Kim’s fine. She’s called in, Chase is on his way there.”
“Well, what’s the address, I can get someone else tracking the van from there for the last part of the journey if Kim wasn’t the last dropped off.”
“Yes, ask Chloe to get on it, she has the address and she’s good on traffic cameras.”
“OK Jack. I’ll get you as soon as we have anything.”
“Thanks Adam.”
He put down the phone; at least that was one load off his mind.
12:58:32pm
“Henley.”
Laura lifted her head slightly to show she was listening, but se lay perfectly still; she knew they’d do much worse than hit her if she started struggling again. After that conversation she had heard, she could feel herself shaking even more, the chains that bound her to the bed rattling quietly. The sound of footsteps towards her sent a shock wave through her body as each step hit the floor. The man leaned over, his breath hot hitting her skin. Grabbing the edge of the duct tape he ripped it cleanly off letting Laura take a few deep breaths.
“Do you have Level three clearance?” He asked gruffly. Laura remained silent, gritting her teeth as a cold blade pressed into a cheek. “Do you have level three clearance Henley?”
“I’m telling you nothing.” She spat, trying to turn her face away from the blade.
“That’s the way you want it…” He growled. “Dave, get her pants off!”
