*Twisted Fate: The First
Curse*
… Meanwhile, in the lab,
Elizabeth pulled the healing cream off of the heat and adds the last
ingredient, stirring before setting the mixture aside to cool. She hates
waiting to use it but she probably couldn’t reach many of the wounds anyway-
it’s probably best to wait for it to cool and then sneak home, add it to a bath
and just relax for awhile. Maybe then she’ll find some peace.
Elizabeth sighs tiredly- when did
life become so difficult?”
She could kick herself for even
thinking this, but she wishes Verity hadn’t gone off for lunch and ‘to deal
with’ the new information she’d been given. It was understandable really,
wasn’t it?
Perhaps she should deal with this
now- what if Verity had actually gone and told Toby? What if he was on his way,
right now, to learn the truth?
Could she really take that chance
and trust Verity again?
It comes, clear as day, that she
can’t trust her again- not yet. There’ll be some ‘scarring’ for the next five
or so minutes so as long as she can keep everything hidden for that long, she
would be fine. Better than fine, everything would look perfect again.
Perfect…
Towels and water, that’s what she
needs.
It takes her a few moments but
she’s quickly set up, the towel soaked in water with the healing cream rubbed
on as she carefully drags the towel over the still bleeding wounds.
Now her bra and top back on-
perfect!
Sighing as she already feels the
coolness of the healing balm beginning to set in, the skin re-knitting itself
as she slips the jacket on, pulling her hair out with a slight smile. She’s
almost back to normal- except for the slight hunger in her stomach, the one
that doesn’t fade, and the tiredness. Maybe not normal, but as normal as she
could hope for…
The door creaks and Elizabeth
spins towards it, barely stopping her healing cream from spilling as she does
so. “Elizabeth?” Toby asks as he steps in.
Thank whatever deity is looking
down on her that she’d put her jacket back on!
“Toby,” she responds coolly, eyes
narrowed on his form as she begins to wonder why he’s here, “what are you doing
here? What do you want?”
He takes a deep breath, seeming
to gather his thoughts before speaking once more, “We need to talk, Elizabeth.
Or, well, I think that maybe you need to talk. To me, that is…”? Toby pauses,
trying to find the right words, “I think there’s something you might want to
tell me about…”
Eyes narrowing in suspicion,
Elizabeth allows a wicked smile to cross her lips, staring into his eyes, “and
what is that, Toby?”
“About,” Toby gulps, looking
away, “About your father.”
There it is, the final nail in
Verity’s proverbial coffin. That girl could not be trusted and Elizabeth won’t
make that mistake again!
A cold laugh escapes her as she
smiles at Toby derisively, “oh, that my father abuses me? Really, Toby! You
believed that!” Elizabeth shakes her head, her expression turning to one of
feigned sadness as she forces an amused glitter into her eyes, “I was just
testing her, Toby, and she obviously failed.”
Toby seems to pause, the anger
flittering to his face before he shakes his head, “she told me you weren’t
lying. She’d seen the marks, whip lashes on your back, Elizabeth. Now I just
need to know, who’s lying to me?”
A moment passes, their eyes locked
in a silent battle as Elizabeth tries to calculate how long it had been since
she’d put the cream on. Four minutes?
“Are you asking me to strip for
you, Toby?” Elizabeth mocks.
‘There!’ Elizabeth thinks
triumphantly, watching as Toby blushes, struggling to maintain his composure.
He looks away.
“That’s not what I asked,
Elizabeth, and I don’t think you stripped for Verity, did you? She told me that
the marks were clearly visible when you took your jacket off and that’s all I’m
asking you to do.” He meets her eyes again, brown clashing with blue as both
struggle to assert their ‘dominance’ in the situation.
Five minutes must have passed by
now and Elizabeth sighs as if he had won, “okay, if you really want me to take
off my jacket I will. But I’m telling you that you’re wasting my time, Toby.”
Sending up another unvoiced
prayer that the marks are gone, Elizabeth turns her back to Toby and sheds her
jacket.
Silence.
Glancing back, she notes the
confused look on Toby’s face with a smirk, she was right then- the marks are
gone.
“Happy now?” Elizabeth asks
sarcastically as she turns back to face him, she knows that her attitude
towards Toby has changed greatly this year, but everything had changed. She
couldn’t want him right now, could she?
Maybe, but it was different. The
prospect of having to trust him was terrifying and, even though she’s sure she
still loves him, she can’t trust him- not yet.
Eyes narrowing, Toby asks,
“Verity your minion again? Running your errands?”
“No,” Elizabeth responds coolly.
“I was testing her, Toby, she wanted to be my friend again but she failed.
That’s it, it’s all done- I don’t need her and I don’t want her sympathy.”
‘What does she mean with those
words?’ Toby wonders, silently thinking the wording strange. “Sympathy?” Toby
instead asks.
“For not having anyone to ‘hang
out’ with, I presume,” Elizabeth snaps. “She’s probably just taking sympathy on
my friendless state and trying to become my friend because of that. Not that I
care. It’s been great having no one to disturb me, need me or mess up my
experiments!” She smirks, “Maybe you should try it?”
With one last glare in the young
woman’s direction, Toby silently turns and leaves the labs, cursing Verity…
