As Scott's distinctive brogue sounded the alarm, the muffled sounds of assault outside the sickbay suddenly faded. McCoy and Spock, standing on either side of the doors with phasers drawn, looked towards Kirk, who was standing in the middle of the room with the deadliest-looking laser-powered medical gadget he could find.
"I believe the parasite has moved away, sir," Spock said, putting an ear to the partition. "I cannot hear anything beyond the breathing of the three men."
"Put that thing away, Jim. You look ridiculous, not to mention that that's a valuable instrument you've got there," McCoy said irritably. "There's nothing to do now but get those men and treat them. There's no telling where that devil is going to go next."
Kirk reluctantly set the makeshift weapon down—smiling indulgently when McCoy hurried over to put it safely out of his reach—and followed Spock through the doors.
"You may want to stay behind me, Captain, as you do not have two sets of eyelids," Spock said, his words not quite clear.
Kirk, intent on scanning the hallway around with his phaser at the ready, failed to notice that Spock had stopped moving. After muttering an apology to both his first officer and ship, not to mention setting the phaser's safety to prevent another accidental discharge, he asked for a clarification.
"I must need to clean out my ears, because I could have sworn you said—oh, Spock!"
Alarmed by Kirk's shout, McCoy rushed out—and was equally taken aback. "Good God, man! What happened to you?"
"I should think it was obvious," Spock said, enunciating through the thick mess on his face. "What happened was what happened to the captain with Chekov, in triplicate."
"Well, don't just stand there! Get away from—" Before McCoy could herd Spock away from the powerful aura of the parasite, one of the security officers lying on the floor spasmed and ejaculated, drenching the doctor.
"Must have been his first," said Kirk, safe and dry behind his friends.
"Oh, shut up," McCoy said, futilely wiping at himself.
"He does have a point, sir," Spock said as he stepped away from the doors. "It appears that, as it would under normal circumstances, the volume of ejaculate decreases each time."
McCoy's only response was to scowl at his now cum-covered hands. Kirk, seeing that he would only grow more exasperated, called Chapel over to assist him.
"Nurse, if you wait until the men have eliminated approximately five more times, you should be able to remove them to the ICU without trouble," said Spock, having cleaned his face with his shirt.
"That's what I was going to say. Get off of me," McCoy snapped, first at Spock and then at Chapel. She pursed her lips and didn't quite stomp outside, leading Kirk to give McCoy an admonitory look.
"Bones, she only wanted to help."
"Well, I can get my shirt clean my own damn self, all right?" McCoy stubbornly continued wiping and pulling at his uniform, managing only to cover more and more of himself in the stranger's semen.
Spock made as though to move away from the wall he had been leaning on. "You do not seem to be having much success, doctor. Perhaps if—"
"Can it, pointy-ears!"
"Yes, sir," Spock said, his body suddenly tense. "Here is my top nonetheless, because it may help you. I will now see if I can track down the parasite thanks to my Vulcan senses."
He was gone before Kirk could say a word.
---
"Jim, pacing around isn't going to help anything," McCoy said, his blue eyes intense with concern. "Don't you think we ought to go find him?"
Kirk halted in the middle of the room with a glare at his friend—though at the moment, he would be hard-pressed to call McCoy anything more endearing than "Idiot". Taking a deep breath, he turned away to gather his thoughts. Still anxious, McCoy pressed on.
"I obviously didn't mean to yell at Spock like that, and I'd take it back in a heartbeat if he were here. We're all under stress right now, not knowing when or where that, that thing is going to attack next. But damn it, Jim, that is no cause for inaction!"
"Excuse me, sirs?" Chapel stepped out of the ICU, drying her hands with a towel. "Ensign Chekov appears to be fully recovered, and would like to assist you."
"Ah, uh, certainly," said Kirk, distractedly. "Tell him to come on out here."
As Chekov made himself suitable for presentation, McCoy checked on the three security officers. They were in stable condition for the time being, if unconscious, thanks to Chapel's treating them with the remedy that had proved effective on Chekov. After satisfying himself with a few tugs on the men's restraints, McCoy took the ensign's elbow and helped him walk out to meet Kirk.
"Reporting for duty, sir," Chekov said, attempting a salute with McCoy's hand still on his arm. "If you're going to take down that willian, I'm going to do it with you."
Kirk couldn't suppress a smile. "All right, Ensign. At ease. But," and he became serious, "There's something I don't think you know about. Spock's out there, too."
"And he could be dangerous, son," McCoy said soberly. "That parasite's pheromones have some kind of special effect on Vulcans, and Spock got a faceful of them before he left. There's no telling what condition he might be in."
Chekov opened his mouth to say something, but McCoy shook his head. He knew Kirk, and right now Kirk wasn't in the mood for sympathy. He was in the mood for finding Spock—and revenge.
First, Spock. Kirk pulled out his communicator once more. "Kirk to bridge. Scotty, Uhura, make sure the whole ship hears this. Am I patched through? Good. Enterprise, this is the captain speaking. First Officer Spock may be under the influence of alien microbes. If he attempts to attack—"
"What are ye talking about, Captain? Spock's right here," Scotty interrupted, sounding as bemused as a disembodied voice could.
"Let me assure you, sir, I have no intention of attacking any member of the crew," Spock's voice, made drier than usual by the communicator's processing, was as calm as ever. The sound of it made Kirk's chest constrict, though that was one ailment he didn't intend to run by McCoy any time soon.
"Stay there, Spock. I'm coming to check on you," Kirk said. He was about to shut his communicator when Spock's voice came through again, verging on urgency.
"Sir, you may want to hurry—" A burst of static drowned him out momentarily. "—The lift—" More static. "—Parasite." The signal disappeared.
There was a moment of stunned silence. When Kirk, breath shallow, showed no signs of responding to the apparent crisis, Chekov and McCoy exchanged glances. But there was no need for force (or mutiny, if worse had come to worst) as Kirk finally spoke, his voice catching on what couldn't possibly have been a sob.
"To the bridge. Now."
