The next morning started normally enough. When everybody had eaten, received a briefing on their next destination, and assembled on the bridge, the only issue worth Kirk's notice was the fact that both McCoy and Spock seemed tired—the doctor with a bit of a hangover. Kirk felt completely fine, of course, because nothing ever bothered him for long (until now, but he wasn't going to think about that at the moment).
When he asked Spock, the Vulcan merely raised an eyebrow and that was that. McCoy's answer was equally obscure; he shot a glare at Spock and muttered something under his breath before turning away, leaving Kirk to infer his own answers. But instead of jumping to conclusions that would satisfy him, as he often did, Kirk decided to let it be—he trusted his crew, McCoy and Spock especially, and he still had enough of a nagging concern in the back of his mind (thin, fine fingers roaming across his body, touching—) to make him want to keep to himself as much as was possible for a starship captain.
"Sir, I think you should look at this," Spock said from his position at his computer, jerking Kirk out of his reverie. "The atmosphere of the planet ahead appears to be composed of a very unusual set of elements."
Kirk nodded absently and went over to Spock, unaware that McCoy was watching and analyzing their every movement. If asked, McCoy would have said he was acting in his capacity as ship psychiatrist, but the truth (as much as he refused to admit it) was that he was beginning to feel left out—or, in more personal terms, he was becoming jealous.
But as of yet McCoy had no serious reason for suspicion, beyond Spock's unrequited feelings for their captain. The way they stood close to each other was necessary, so Spock could discuss the readings in the viewfinder without having to explain things that Kirk could see for himself. And when Kirk put his arm over Spock's shoulder, well, that was just his way of showing his first officer appreciation for a job well done. When Spock reached up to take Kirk's hand and guide it in a demonstration of something on the control panel, however, Kirk flinched—and McCoy started forward.
That fool—I told him to wait, but I'll bet my degree that he didn't find that logical enough a thing to do, and now look! McCoy thought irritably as he prepared to give Kirk some medical-sounding excuse for Spock's behavior. But as it turned out, it wasn't Spock who needed the excuse.
"Don't—please don't touch like me that, Mr. Spock."
"Forgive me, Captain. Like what?"
Kirk stammered, suddenly unsure of what he had meant. "Like, uh, with, with your fingers."
Spock just looked at him, and took his time before responding with a voice as heavy with skepticism (and sarcasm) as it had ever been. "I'm sorry, sir, but I don't think that that would be quite possible. You see, it is inevitable that from time to time I shall have to—"
As Kirk became more and more flustered, Scott looked over from the helm, where he and Sulu had been discussing navigational procedures.
"I do nae want to be rude, sirs, but what in heaven's name is going on? The rest of us can hardly concentrate!"
The bridge fell silent as everybody waited for a response (and Scott fervently regretted his question). Finally McCoy stepped up to Kirk and put a hand on his arm, looking at his unusually inexpressive face with concern.
"Jim—"
"Get away from me!" Kirk screamed, shaking off McCoy ferociously and twisting away from Spock. When Spock's attempts to get his attention proved ineffective, a brief nod to Sulu and Chekov launched the two young men into action; with their help, Spock was able to get close enough to Kirk to subdue him with a Vulcan neck pinch. Once Kirk was completely still, McCoy pulled out the sedative hypo he kept on him for safety purposes and gave administered a heavy dose—Kirk would be out for several hours, if not more.
Without needing to be told, McCoy pulled Kirk up and began carrying him to sickbay. As they entered the lift, Spock turned to Scott, who had been trying to be as unobtrusive as possible.
"Mr. Scott, you have the comm until further notice. The doctor and I will be in sickbay if you need to reach either of us." With that terse statement, Spock left the bridge to visit his fallen captain.
