(Perez and Sandy walk through a crawl space crowded with human refugees. They sit in family groups with bags of possessions. There are way more than fifty people. They all watch Sandy and Perez walk past. Big flashlights here and there offer gloomy light. Sentries armed with bow and arrows peer through holes into the room beneath. The women pass one)
Sentry: All quiet below, O'Neill. Most have finished their reviews and gone off to bed.
Sandy: That's fine, Donald. Keep everyone quiet until it's time. (they walk on)
Perez: It IS time. Get these people on the roof.
Sandy: Once this crowd starts moving, it'll be impossible to get them back under cover. And if the giants find out we're in the building, there isn't any way we'll escape back to our homes.
Perez: Yes, but once the shuttle's here, there won't be much time.
Sandy: I understand your concerns, Major, but this is how I have to run my evacuation.
Perez: And we're here to help, ma'am, but-
Sandy: Call me Sandy, please.
Perez: I try, but every time I do, I see a young Vertag talking to a woman in a bird cage.
Sandy: It was a box, never a cage. (they pass the last refugees. A ramp leads upwards. At the top, a large piece of giant cardboard covers the opening. They push it up and step onto the roof of the dormitory. It's a clear night. They stand on the gentle slope of the roof tiles and look around. Some sentries are around the opening. Sandy points to a light in the distance..) Vertag should be waiting right about there.
Perez: How did you two cook this up, anyway? Some plan you made when he was a kid?
Sandy: No. I always knew he was sneaky. When I called, he said he caught me once in his uniform, once in overalls. (she points to a spot down on the grounds) He caught me when he was in overalls. He was being punished so he had Dumpster Duty. The time I escaped from the box, he was also in Dumpster overalls.
Perez: Coincidence? Or did he get punished a lot?
Sandy: You've met Vertag more recently than I have. Is he a happy soldier, diligent in observing the spirit and the letter of all rules and regulations?
Perez: Punishment, aye. (they both laugh)
Sandy: Anyway, I got enough information to know it was him, but he invented a fictitious capture. (she gestures towards the train station) So, I invented fictitious details of that capture. As a wonderful distraction.
Perez: And the pick-up?
Sandy: Well, the first capture was a lie. The whole 'on the first night we'll watch you' was a lie, then, too. Everything happens tonight.
Perez: (looks up into the sky) It happens in five minutes.
(Up in the sky, a star becomes brighter and brighter, the way the Inflict looked in episode 1-4.)
Sandy: Oh, my.
Perez: Now, everyone gets on the roof and then the shuttle. We can't hang here too long before we'll have to trade fire with the giants.
Sandy: Alright. (signals to the sentries. They pull up the cardboard and start yelling)
(Cut to the crawl space. All the humans stand and start walking towards the ramp)
(Cut to a giant library. Most of the shelf aisles and the cartels are empty, but a few students look up at the pitter patter of many, many tiny feet moving quickly over the ceiling)
Sandy: But not everyone's ready to go on this trip.
Perez: This is the only trip! (winds kick up a bit as the shuttle hovers over the roof and lowers the loading ramp. Marines line the ramp, ready to help speed people upwards) My orders are clear!
Sandy: So are mine. My daughter's out there! (points over the roofs in sort of the direction of the train station)
Perez: Why didn't she come?!
Sandy: She pregnant. She couldn't have made it up the rope ladders. (the ramp touches the roof. People start swarming up it.)
Perez: …Uh…
Sandy: I'm not leaving without her! (down below, giants shout and point. In the distance we hear sirens)
Perez: Janet? Did you get that?

(Vertag rolls off the table, slipping an earbug into place. He walks quickly towards the car on the side of the road. Janet leans out of the holster)
Vertag: Okay, we drive to the school, get Perez and Sandy, then get her daughter and you get the shuttle back down here immediately so I don't have a pregnant woman giving birth in my hands again.
Janet: Oh, right. A new life begins and you're finicky about her water breaking on your palm.
Vertag: I just never had any interest in helping babies get out of the baby place.
Janet: You grew up on a ranch! Didn't you have to assist any of the stock being born?
Vertag: Snapper ranchers? Animal husbandry on the Island starts and ends with a club.
Janet: Okay, you big fussy wuss, we'll take the nasty pregnant lady away before you have to face the horrible bodily fluids. Hey, you want us to take care of the bugs they put on your car so they can't follow us?
Vertag: Please.
(Cut to the control room of the Excelsior. The Captain nods to the Commander, she taps a technician on the shoulder)
Commander: Neutralize the transponders.
(Cut back to the field. Vertag approaches the car. A light appears in the starry sky. He pauses. Whistling sounds start to grow.)
Vertag: Uh…
Janet: (Hand to her ear) RUN! (He doesn't pause, covers her holster with one hand and rabbits for the trees)
(The light in the sky screams down to the car. It explodes, rising up off the ground then crashing back down)
(Vertag peers around the bole of a tree. His eyes are wide. The more his expression and position can be made to resemble the SOG when he tasered the phone, the better)
(The car has a big smoking crater in the hood over where the engine used to be. All the glass is shattered, all the tires are flat)
Vertag: What in the name of Thrombeldinbar…?
Janet: Excelsior? Can we get a data dump on what the hell happened?
(Cut to the Excelsior)
Commander: Next time I ask someone to neutralize an electronic device, assume I'm talking about a jammer unless and until I mention explosives, 'Kay?
Tech: Yes, ma'am. Sorry, ma'am.
Commander: Don't apologize to me. I'm transferring you to Vertag's Exchange for the rest of your tour. Apologize to him.
Tech: (Gulp!)
(Cut to a drain pipe. Perez and Sandy use a plastic toy wagon to travel the pipe. Sandy holds a flashlight and steers. Perez rides in the back, pumping her foot to push them along. There is a large backpack with a red cross in the wagon)
Sandy: Want me to spell you?
Perez: Won't that hurt your leg?
Sandy: Not too badly.
Perez: Right. Well, I'm good for a while. (She touches her ear) Oh, my.
Sandy: What?
Perez: Vertag won't be able to meet us at the edge of the property. He's got car trouble.
Sandy: Okay. This pipe goes in the general direction of where we need to be. We'll meet him at another storm drain.
Perez: Great. (drops to her belly, uses both feet to push the wagon) Just great. We should have gotten on the shuttle, had them airdrop us on your daughter's location.
Sandy: The minute I step on that shuttle, your command is going to lose all interest in any humans left down here. I'm the only leverage she has.
Perez: Not true, Sandy. But Vertag's going to love you. You distrust our government as much as we distrust his. He'll think you're an enlightened being.
Sandy: It's called 'paying attention,' Major. Now be quiet. (The wagon rolls through the bottom of a concrete storm drain. Giant voices are heard somewhere nearby, children from the school discussing the shuttle. The wagon continues through the space and shoots into the next pipe. Fade as the wagon recedes)
(Fade in over in the woods, Vertag runs through the trees as fast as conditions allow (Dark, uneven terrain, trees))
Commander (Voice): Vertag, be advised that there are several individuals in the area ahead of you.
Vertag: You know where they are? Gimmee some directions.
(Cut to the Excelsior. A Marine officer looks at the big screen which shows an infra-red view. There are several people in the woods, Vertag running in their general direction)
Major: Okay, there are about twenty armed personnel ahead of you. You're going to want to turn south south-east.
Vertag (Voice): I am? That's going to take me towards Perez?
Major: No, sir. That's going to take you around the big group of people that outnumber you so badly.
Vertag (Voice): Uh, is there anyone else I could talk to? I want to go towards the people we're here to rescue.
Major: Understood, Agent, but you can't see what I can about your situation.
Vertag (voice): Yeaaaah, well….
Adams (voice): Agent Vertag? We've been monitoring your situation. We may be able to help with suitable guidance.
Major: I don't think…
(Cut to Vertag. He crouches under the branches of a tree)
Vertag: Hey, they've seen me in action. Who's there? Styles?
Lessala (voice): Janet, are you strapped in?
Vertag: Oh oh.
Janet: Yes…?
(Cut to the Earthling Building. A truck drawn up to the back wall has a huge projector assembly on the back. It shines a giant-sized image on the wall that matches the bridge display of the Excelsior. Lessala stands over the truck, microphone in hand.)
Lessala: Vertag! Turn to your left. More to your left. Okay, now run straight forward.
Vertag (Voice): Running, running…
Lessala: You don't have to narrate, I can see you.
Vertag (Voice): Okay. (his image tears through the trees, out into a small clearing)
Lessala: Slow down, slow down…drop into that ditch.
Vertag (Voice): What di- Whooof! (his image falls into a ditch)
Lessala: You guys okay?
Janet (voice): Fine.
Vertag (Voice): Ow.
Lessala: Quiet! Three guys are about to step into your clearing. Wait…wait…(images of three men stalk into the clearing)
(Cut to the Excelsior)
Tech: Ma'am! Someone's calling Vertag's pocket phone!
Commander: Don't let it ring!
Tech: I already interrupted it, ma'am.
Captain: Pipe it to my station.
Tech: Aye, Captain. (Speaker on the Captain's seat rings once, he stabs a button)
Captain: SS Excelsior, command center, can I help you?
Dordell (voice): Vertag? What's going on out there?
Captain: Senior Agent Dordell, Agent Vertag can't take any calls right now.
Dordell (voice): What? Who is this? Never mind. Where is he? Taking a nap in his car?
(Cut to the car, flames are dying down, smoke smolders from the crater)
(Cut to the Excelsior)
Captain: No, sir.
Dordell (voice): Well, we're getting reports of explosions and rockets and attacking spaceships and who all knows what else. I'm sitting on thirty law enforcement personnel that are hot and bothered about going out to enforce the law!
Captain: I understand that, sir, but right now I don't think any of them want to be in Vertag's crossfire.
Dordell (voice): Crossfire? There's shooting?
(Cut to Vertag crouched in a ditch)
Lessala (voice): Go! (he stands, shoots two men in the back)
(Cut to the EB. Lessala holds her hand as a pistol and shoots at the image of the third gunman. He folds as if her hand went off. Trying to show that she and Vertag are in close synch. Vertag's image turns and continues through the woods)
(Cut to the Excelsior)
Captain: Yes, sir.
Dordell (voice): Well, I sure don't want to be anywhere near Vertag putting down rebels. (slightly muffled) Hey! Guys! Anyone doesn't want to commit suicide should get comfy. (clear) Thanks a lot. I assume this is an Earthling?
Captain: Yes, sir.
Dordell (voice): Well, appreciate your assistance in this matter. Bye, now.
Captain: Bye. (makes throat cutting gesture to tech)
Commander: Vertag, Dordell would like to speak with you when you have a moment.
Vertag (Voice): How do you know?
Commander: We interrupted the phone call he was trying to make.
Vertag (Voice): (pause) You can do that?
Lessala (Voice): That's nifty.
Janet (Voice): WATCH OUT FOR THE TREE!
Vertag (Voice): Whoops!
Lessala (voice): Okay, Perez is just about to the storm drain directly south of you.
(Cut to the pipe. Perez pushes the wagon to the end of the pipe and gathers up the backpack. Sandy turns off the flashlight and gets down. They peer into the darkness of the empty space before them.)
(Cut to Vertag. He steps up to the storm drain and grabs the wooden lid on it. He pauses.)
Vertag: Perez, I'm about to lift the lid. Please don't shoot the giant that suddenly appears over you.
Perez (voice): No promises.
Lessala (voice): MAJOR!
Vertag: It's okay, just want to avoid any misidentification, here.
Lessala (voice): There won't be. You're standing right on top of her little green dot.
Perez (voice): Haul away, Vertag.
(he lifts the lid, shies away from the hole. He looks around for a second, then shines his flashlight on his own face and leans over the hole.)
(Cut to the bottom of the storm drain. Perez has her grenade launcher pointed up at Vertag's face)
Perez: Hey, giant!
Sandy: Vertag…
Vertag: Ready to go? (he turns off the flashlight and reaches down. Perez jumps up into his hand, holds her hand out for Sandy. She hesitates a second, then joins the Major)
(Cut to Vertag. He stands and looks around as he holds his hand to the holster. Perez and Janet help Sandy climb into the holster. Perez climbs into a pocket)
Vertag: Now where?
Sandy: There's a stone wall about half a mile north of us. It meets a gravel road. (Vertag starts walking north) The road runs past an abandoned house. In the back yard of the house is a big oak tree.
Lessala (voice): I can see that! Turn a little bit to your left. Okay, watch out for the canal.
Vertag: The canal where? In front of me or beside me or what?
Lessala (voice): Just keep going straight until I say stop.
(Cut to a gravel road. Vertag walks along it on the grass. Gun out, he moves carefully and quietly towards an abandoned house)
Vertag: So why isn't she on the Excelsior by now?
Sandy: I refused to go. Keeping me out of the giant's custody is the only bargaining chip I have.
Vertag: She said from the giant's pocket. But I wasn't asking you. I know Perez could have overpowered you easily.
Sandy: I kick. And I bite.
Vertag: And she's killed giants. She could have just called down a squad.
Perez: (leaning over the edge of his pocket to be in the conversation) We're cooperating. For now. Between our orders and Janet's fine example, I figured it'd be easier to do it her way than force her to do it ours.
Janet: Plus, you'd drop kick her to the next district if you found out Sandy was bruised being taken into custody.
Sandy: He would?
Vertag: Probably.
(He leaves the road, puts a hand to his pocket and jogs around the house. He searches the back yard with his flashlight. Under the large oak tree is a tiny burrow. He gets close. We hear a piercing scream from under the ground.)
Sandy: Damn. She's in labor already.
Vertag: How fast can we get the shuttle down here? (he fishes Perez out and puts her on the ground, then holds his hand for Janet and Sandy to climb out onto it)
Perez: Hovering overhead like a giant neon sign for Sandy's location? While we try to move a woman carefully out of a burrow and onto the ramp? No, we're going to have to wait until she's done and ready for transport.
(Sandy and Janet take the red cross backpack into the burrow)
Vertag: (looks around) Okay, Lessala? Find me a good place to stand and be a sentinel.
Perez: No! What if it's a breach baby? (Vertag stares down at her) Someone's going to have to rub her stomach and twist the baby around to come out head first. Figure we're in a hurry and you've got the strength… So hang out here for in case we need you. (he stares, fear growing in his expression. She turns and enters the burrow)
(Cut to inside the human caves. Wood panels hold the sides up. There is light coming from a chamber a few steps in. Two of Sandy's sentries stand there looking worried. She jogs up to find the rough delivery room. A woman rests on a plastic doll's bed doing the labor thing. A man holds her hand.)
(Janet has taken some electronic devices out and placed one on the woman's belly. Sandy places one on her forehead with a gentle smile. Colored LED's flicker on both)
Sandy: (glances at Perez) That was very mean of you, Major.
Perez: Flattery will get you everything.
Sandy: Janet, Major, this is Cahellsa. And her husband, Daniel.
Perez: Pleased.
Cahellsa: Hi. Thanks for coming to the birthday party.
Janet: Wouldn't miss it for the world.
Daniel: Is one of you a doctor? (Janet raises a finger in a 'wait one' gesture)
Janet: Excelsior, do you have the telemetry?
(Cut to a medical bay. A doctor sits at a computer station. Readouts show her the baby and the mother's stats)
Doc: I do, Crane. Everyone's looking fine. (taps keys) And you can stop teasing your giant. The baby's in a perfect position.)
Vertag (voice): WHEW!
Janet: Wuss.
Lessala (voice): Vertag! Three guys coming down the road you came up!
(Cut to the tree. Vertag takes off his jacket and stuffs it into the hole to muffle the screams then moves out from behind the house)
(Cut to delivery. Janet and Sandy are using supplies from the backpack to set up a clean area for the delivery. A sentry steps into the room.)
Sentry1: Miss O'Neill! We're trapped! The giant has plugged the hole with something!
Perez: Relax, he's just making sure her screams don't carry.
Sentry1: How can you be sure?
Perez: It's what I would have done. I should have asked him to do it when we got here. (Sandy waves and the sentry departs)
Janet: Excelsior, is there anything we can do?
Doc (voice): What, you wanna boil some towels? Right now, the baby is in charge. We're at her disposal.
Cahellsa: Her?
Doc (voice): Whoops. Guess you didn't know?
Sandy: Her doctor hasn't made a house call in about twenty years. (Cahellsa and Daniel share a loving look.)
(cut to Doc at her console. A red light starts to flash)
Doc: Well, you were going to find out in a few- Hey, the computer can't match her with any stored medical records. How old was she when she crashed here?
Vertag (voice): Cahellsa is a popular pet name. I'm guessing she was born in (three gunshots) captivity.
(Cut to the burrow. Daniel holds his wife's hand and mops her brow, carefully no touching the monitor. Janet and Sandy are at the business end. Perez stands in the doorway)
Sandy: (softly) Yes.
Perez: So she's not your daughter.
Sandy: (clenched teeth) She might as well be. At least as far as I'm concerned. If you people don't like it-
Perez: Hey, it doesn't change anything. Unless you keep crying wolf every-
Janet: Damerae? Not here to pick a fight.
Perez: I don't know WHAT we're here for at this poi-
Cahellsa: (screams)
Perez: Oh. Yeah.
(Cut to the yard. Vertag scans the sky)
Vertag: If she's in labor, shouldn't the shuttle be coming down again?
Commander (voice): Agent Vertag, there's no telling how long she'll be in labor. We can't just hover overhead for one to eight hours. As the doctor says, everyone's on the baby's schedule now.
Lessala (voice): Eight hours?
Commander (voice): Actually, my first kid had me on the table for twelve whole-
Vertag: That's a wonderful story, can't wait to hear all the details, preferably when we're all out of the woods and aren't being stalked by mercenary human hunters, but right now we need to focus on-
Lessala (voice): Oh, you're clear, Vertag.
(Cut to the Earthling building and the surveillance)
Lessala: No one else for miles around. Go on, Commander!
Vertag (voice): You're so mean…
(fade out as the Commander starts to tell her labor horror story)
Commander (voice): Well, my water broke when my husband was kneeling down to…
(fade in at the bottom of the tree. Vertag pulls his coat clear and shakes the dirt off. He sits down against the bole. Lights shine as the two sentries, Daniel and Perez carry Cahellsa out on a stretcher. Each has a corner of the stretcher and a light. Janet has the backpack and another flashlight. Sandy follows, carrying the baby. She has a softer light strapped to her forehead)
Commander (voice): Okay, Crane, the Inflict is outbound. Well, inbound, from your POV. They're using a shallow descent, avoiding the school. Should be overhead in a few.
Janet: Great. Do we need to set up a beacon?
Commander (voice): That's a negative, Crane. We've had nothing better to do for the last two hours but plot your position.
(bearers lower the stretcher to the ground gently.)
Lessala (voice): Perimeter's still clear for two miles, Vertag.
Vertag: Thanks. (He's staring down at Sandy.)
Sandy: (looks up) Hey. You want to hold her?
(the parents gasp. Janet and Perez smile)
Vertag: I know all guys say this, but I really am afraid I'll hurt her.
Sandy: How about, I hold her and you hold me.
Vertag: I would be honored. (he puts his palm down. Cahellsa squeezes Daniel's hand as Sandy steps confidently onto the palm. He lifts them carefully up to look closely.)
Lessala (voice): How does she look?
(Sandy aims her light at the baby's face)
Vertag: Tiny, wrinkly, tiny and beautiful.
Lessala (voice): Awwww.
Sandy: You are talking about the baby, right?
Vertag: Right. So, what's her name?
Sandy: They don't want to name her until they get to orbit.
Vertag: (eyebrows rise) Well. That'll be a story to tell at reunions.
Sandy: (cuddles baby close) It will, won't it little one?
Vertag: It's nice to see you again, Sandy.
Sandy: And it's not incredibly horrible to see you again, Vertag.
Vertag: I'm going to need an address.
Sandy: What for?
Vertag: I'm going to send her a teddy bear. She'll be the only kid in her class with a bear so big she could-
Perez: How about the garrison buys her a bear, we let you sign the card?
Vertag: You think that'll be better?
Janet: We do.
Vertag: Oh. We'll do that.
(the shuttle hum starts to sound, slowly getting louder. Vertag puts Sandy down, holds his jacket over the Earthlings as dust starts to kick up. Spotlights criss/cross the yard.)
Vertag: (growls) These lights better not blind the baby. (the lights all wink out) Okay, then.
