When the Impala pulled into the smaller town forty minutes over, it wasn't hard to find the Corbins. The towns' people they asked seemed to have the same disposition about them as Mrs. Anderson. Though everyone had their own two cents and theories about them, no one had actually been in their house. "Just a bunch of rumors and hearsay," Dean said disgruntled. He would rather deal with skeptics than 'believers'. It was harder to sort out the details when everyone thought they were experts.
After questioning the locals, Dean suggested that they split up. He would check more around town for spooky happening and Sam could go check the house. Sam was ok with that. What he was not ok with was how he ended up walking the six blocks down the street to said house instead of being driven.
When Sam arrived at the house he was a little surprised at how normal it looked. The way these people acted he had pictured an ominous black house on a crooked hill complete with storm clouds and lightening back ground. What he found though was a white Victorian style house, with a matching picket fence, a nice yard with rose bushes, and large oak trees that one even had swing attached to it. However, despite its normal appearance, Sam knew first hand that normal looking things were far from it.
He walked up the small cobble stone path that led up to the ivy covered porch. Sam rang the door bell and looked around as he waited; a little envious that he'd never lived in a place like this.
"Who are you?" Sam turned around to see a small girl with sable black hair in a rose patterned sun dress staring at him with big cobalt eyes from the door way.
"Hi," Sam said, not expecting a child, but kneeling down to get eye level with her, "My name is Sam. I'm here to see an Audrey and a Nicolet. I need to ask them some questions about a family member."
"Nicki isn't here." She said shaking her head.
"Oh, that's too bad, is Audrey?" The little girl nodded. Her inky black hair flopping in her face past her head band as she did. "Can I talk to her?" Sam asked, smiling at her to win her trust. That, and she was horribly adorable. The little girl blinked at him and then pulled the stuffed bunny in her arms up to her ear.
"Finnington says yes and it's ok for you to come in." The little girl opened the door wider and then jogged down the hall further into the house.
Sam arched a brow at the peculiar little girl, but stepped into the house anyway. "Can we help you?" Sam spun around from closing the door to look see two elderly women that had appeared in the foyer.
"Um...hi, um…the little girl let me in," He stammered.
"Valerie. She has a good judge of character. And taste." The one on the left, with aged sable hair similar to the little girl's, said. Her mocha colored gaze looking him up and down as a boney finger tapped her thin fire engine red lips.
"Um…I'm looking for a girl." Sam said, a little uneasy under the older women's eyes.
"I think that you're in the wrong place. The whore house is on the other side of town." The black hair woman said with a chuckle as Sam blushed a little at the comment.
"Bridget, really," The other old woman scolded, "This young man needs something." Sam squirmed a little internally as her bright turquoise eyes seemed to look inside him as she smiled.
"He just said what he needed Cordeila. Weren't you listening?" Bridget said playfully, thoroughly enjoying the way Sam was becoming so flustered. Cordeila rolled her eyes, then smiled at the man.
"What is it that you need dear?" She asked, but Sam got this feeling that she already knew by her tone. He coughed and cleared his throat.
"I'm looking for an Audrey Corbin."
"Oh! You're one of Audrey's friends!" Cordeila chimed happily.
"Uh..." Sam said confused.
"I didn't even know Audi had any friends, what with her nose always in a book or with her studies. She barley gets out of the house unless it's for work."
"Uh…"
"Don't make Audrey seem so anti-social Bridget! She goes out! She's just more of a normal, respectable young lady."
"Uh…"
"What about our family is normal or respectable Cordeila?"
"Uh…"
"For one thing not by yelling so loudly like senile old ladies that can't hear," The trio in the foyer looked up at the staircase to see an auburn twenty something descend down them.
"Oh Audrey! We were just talking about you!"
"I know. I can hear you all the way up stairs." Audrey chastised the older women, stopping on the final step to examine the new person in their house and addressing him with a smile and "Hello,"
"Um, hi," Sam was certainly at a loss for words today, blinking stupidly at the beautiful younger woman who looked at him with curious honey colored eyes.
"I thought your sister was the one who went for the dumb, pretty ones?"
"Aunt Bridget!" Audrey scolded the older woman who 'casually' 'whispered' the sentence to the younger woman behind her hand. "He's probably terrified of you." She said stepping off the last step and toward him. "I'm Audrey," She offered casually with her hand.
"Sam Winchester," He kicked himself internally for giving her his real name as he shook her hand. "I'm here to ask you some questions about your cousin James. Do you have a minute?" Audrey blinked a few times before scratching the back of her head.
"Could you two give us a bit?"
"Oh of course dear!" Cordeila said happily, clasping her hands in front of her, "you two can go in the sitting room and chat. I'll make some tea! Dear, what would you like Jasmine or Rosehip*?"
"Um…either is fine…" Sam answered the joyful older woman who sparkled in her eyes.
"He doesn't need tea," Audrey said over her shoulder as she pulled back the curtain to the adjoining room. Sam nodded and then gave a nod to the older women, who waved with cheeky smiles; smiles that reminded him of cats that ate canaries.
"So what do you want to know about James?" She asked, sitting in one of the antique arm chairs. Sam took a seat in the other one while admiring the room. It was very elaborate, like he gathered the rest of the house was. A collection of interesting, exotic things scattered about that still seemed to fit together nicely. It was like they worked together because they didn't.
"We're investigating some of the details of his death"
"We?" Audrey asked with a brow arch.
"My brother and I," Sam kicked himself again as he told her the truth without realizing it.
He was usually good at this sort of thing like his brother, but something about her made him not want to lie. Dean would have said it was the low cut tank she was wearing. Boobage was always man kryptonite, he said. But it wasn't that. Not that Sam would argue that the woman in front of him wasn't a knock out, but it was something else about her that made him feel at ease, like he could tell her anything.
Sam tried to mentally prep himself for this. She could have powers like Andy or other demons that tricked you into getting what they wanted.
"Why do you need to ask me about it?" Audrey asked, breaking his inner train of thought.
"Had you seen your cousin at all before he died? Did you know any of his friends, maybe someone that wanted to hurt him?" Sam asked, but she shook her head.
"No, that side of the family hasn't been close with us. James was trying to fix that, but it was a slow road going. I saw him maybe a month ago for an hour. He seemed fine, but a little jumpy."
"Jumpy how?" Sam asked.
"I don't know. He's always been like that. Despite his good intentions to mend broken bonds, he was still a little anxious around us. Old habits die hard I guess." Audrey said fingering the edges of the sheer red scarf around her neck. Her silver rings and bracelet twinkling in the bits of light that escaped in through the curtains.
"Why would he be anxious around you? Did something happen?"
"I'm sure if you spoke to my Aunt or anyone around town you know why." Sam nodded.
"Yeah, we heard the rumors."
"Yeah, rumors," Audrey said glanced off into the distance for a moment. Sam furrowed his brows at the cryptic young woman and wanted to ask her what her mournful, nostalgic tone meant.
"My, the air in here is certainly stuffy," The two brunettes looked up to see the silver haired Cordeila enter the room with a tray and a smile.
"Auntie C, I said no tea," Audrey scolded but you could tell she knew it was a lost cause.
"Oh hush Audrey! What kind of hostesses would we be if we didn't give our guests tea? He won't want to come back." Sam smiled a little at the jovial older woman; despite the knowing look she seemed to give him, even though he didn't know what it was she knew. "I choose the Rosehip because the Jasmine has gone a bit stale. But I did manage to find some sugar cookies that Nicki or Valerie haven't gobbled up. Sugar dear?"
"Thank you," He said as he took the cup that was handed to him.
"Such a nice boy," Cordeila praised, "I like your energy. It has a very interesting feel to it. Your aura is a bit murky though. Good thing there's tea." Sam gave a odd laugh and tilted his head a little, not sure what that meant.
"Are you done now?" Audrey asked as she tried to sound annoyed despite her faint smile.
"Oh alright, I'll leave you alone." Cordeila huffed, "It was very nice to meet you Sam. Be sure to drop by anytime." She added, patting her niece on the head as she left the room again.
"She's really something." Audrey turned back around to her guest.
"The nice word you're looking for is eccentric." Sam laughed once behind the rim of his cup. He took a couple sips of the tea before his cell phone went off in his pocket. He flipped it open and read the text that his brother had sent him asking him where he was.
"I have to go," He said, though a little awkwardly at having to leave to abruptly, as he stood. Audrey stood as well and led him to the door, "Thanks for the tea." The brunette smiled and chuckled at him
"Don't mention it. It's a shame you couldn't finish it. My aunt is...eccentric, but right. Tea is very good for you."
"Maybe if you're free we can go out for some?" Sam asked, not sure where that had come from but not really sure he regretted it. Audrey smiled at him and shrugged a little as her hands found their way into her dark jean's pockets.
"I don't know…"
"Well, if you change your mind or think of anything else about cousin that might be helpful." Sam added, scratching his cell's number on an old receipt in his pocket. He smirked a little as the corners of her lips jutted up just a little as she took it.
"We'll see," She replied, and opened the door. Sam took the hint and moved to walk out. He paused on the porch when she called to him, "I hope you and your brother find out what happened to James, so it doesn't happen to anyone else." Sam furrowed his brows at her a little; confused by her slight crypticness again.
"Don't worry. My brother and I are good at this sort of thing." Audrey smiled faintly and waved a little as she closed the door to the house.
Sam paused for a moment to look at the closed door. A mild wave of confusion settling over him as he mentally review the past close to an hour he spent in the house. Something was definitely strange, but he could pin point what.
"Hey mister," Sam paused in the yard and looked back at the tiny form of Valerie that marched up to him. "Finnington said to give this to you," She said, holding out a green stone in the palm of her hand. Sam took it and examined it before smiling.
"Well thank you. That's very nice of you."
"Don't thank me. It was Finnington's idea." She said, before skipping off with her rabbit around the other side of the house.
Sam furrowed his brows again, but looked at the stone in his hand again. Its green pigment winking in the light as it caught the light. He shrugged a little and put it in his pocket, giving the house one final look before heading on his way.
