The young girl that stood in front of him looked no older than 10 or 11. She was small, tiny even, timid and seemed to wish she could sink into the wall. Her downcast eyes showed her fear, and she shrunk as he approached her and placed his first two fingers under her chin to lift up her head. Hans turned toward the girl's father, a short but robust man with a stately look to him.
"How old is she?" His eyes met with the eyes of the other man, and he motioned toward the girl.
"She's 12. Just turned." Her age was obvious in both her mannerisms and her appearance. Her body still retained its fat from childhood, she had a round and healthy visage and she looked to be at the start of her sexual development.
"What is your name?" Hans shifted his gaze to the girl, who stared up at him with large and sparkling brown eyes.
"R-Renate," she stammered in a tone barely above a whisper.
"And you know you are to be my wife, Renate?"
"Yes."
"Good. It is settled, then. You will call me 'sir'. " As Renate nodded at him in forced agreement, Hans bent down and lightly kissed the back of her small hand. Her eyes, tainted with suspicion, followed his every movement.
"Leave us, Renate," her father said to her. She nodded obediently and promptly left hte room. "What do you think of her?"
Renate's father's study smelled of brandy and old books. It was a grand study, and it almost rivaled the one he had at home. Hans figured that Hermann must be near his own age or only a few years older, yet he was willing to give away his only daughter to a man old enough to be her father.
"She is beautiful, and seems to be teachable."
"Do we have a deal, then?" Hermann offered Hans a cigar, and he gladly took it.
"We do." Hermann's eyes narrowed and he waited after taking a puff of his cigar to speak again.
"There is one condition, my friend, one condition that you must abide by." Hans nodded apprehensively.
"What is it?" Hermann took a deep breath and cleared his throat.
"Wait until her fourteenth birthday to marry her. I want her to have two more years of childhood before she becomes a woman." Truthfully, this was more than agreeable to him; he couldn't imagine having a pubescent wife who was barely into her teen years. To take a young wife was legal, certainly, but not socially acceptable. Hans knew he was straddling the line of decency by marrying such a young girl, and he resolved not only to refrain from touching her until she reached adulthood, but to keep her a secret until she had reached a more acceptable age.
"I am agreeable to this. I wouldn't want to deny a young girl her innocence." A short, plump woman with curly blond hair entered the room, and upon laying eyes on Hans she began to cry softly. Before Hermann could shoo her, she ran to Hans' side.
"Don't take my little girl. Please, sir. I beg of you, don't take her. She's too young to be a wife and mother; she's only a girl!" Hermann's face reddened with fury as Hans sat silent and stunned.
"Enough, Gerte! We spoke about this some time ago, and you agreed. I've asked the Chancellor to give us two more years with her. Don't worry, dear. Now, please apologize to the Chancellor and myself for your impudence." Gerte bowed her head and blushed with shame.
"I'm sorry, gentlemen. I was overreacting." After giving her a soft pat on the arm, Gerte left the room, defeated.
The men's conversation continued well into the evening. Gerte served dinner, and both she and Renate ate with them. Renate was asked by her father to sit next to Hans, and throughout dinner he shot a few curious glances her way. She barely touched her food, but instead pushed it around her plate sadly. Her behavior gave off the impression that she was crestfallen and hopeless. Perhaps she had fought their marriage, he thought, and lost her battle: a battle to retain the innocence of childhood and to marry for love. Or perhaps she was disgusted by his age, scared of him and dreading their marriage. No matter what it was that held her back, she seemed like a sad child. Hopefully two additional years to live her life free of the burdens of marriage would help her to grow happier.
"Renate, pick your head up and remove your elbow from the table," Gerte scolded. Renate looked up slowly and turned her head to look at Hans. A smile crept across his face. He couldn't help it; she was so pretty.
