Chapter 3
Sitting in the passenger seat of the Impala, Sam was curled up, well, the best he could manage that because of his size, clutching his stomach, eyes shut. Damn, he hurt all over, but his roiling stomach was the worst when it came to that. The only 'upside' to this was that the pain was about a hundred percent better than it had been the night before. It was at least at a level he could deal with until like the night before. When Cas started the purging of the demon blood from his system, it was the worst agony he had ever experienced in his life. Not only that, but he had displayed powers that he hadn't known he had and hallucinated the most horrific things he could imagine. No, this was much better though it wasn't a walk in the park.
With a groan of pain as they hit a good sized bump, he uncurled slightly and took a large drink of the 7-Up he had. It wasn't the best for getting rid of the sick feeling in his stomach, but it helped slightly. Along with that, he hoped that the mild pain killers he had taken not long before would kick in and at least dull things slightly. Even a little would make him feel a whole lot better. Glancing over at Sammy as he drove, Dean's brow was furrowed. “Dude, you sure you're alright?” He asked softly. Sam hadn't looked good this morning when they took off, but had assured him he was fine and they could go. Having seen this before, he assumed it was something his brother had eaten, as that had happened to both of them in the past, but this didn't appear to be getting any better. “It's nothing to worry about, Dean,” Sam told him, taking another swig of his soda. “I'll be fine. Just give it some time.” Nodding, Dean kept looking at his brother but said nothing. Turning his attention back to the road, he made a mental note to stop early that night so Sammy could get a bit more sleep. That always helped things. “What is it, do you know?” He asked after going a couple more miles. Grimacing, not sure how to word it, Sam finally told him, “Just one of those things. Upset stomach, aches, you know the kind of feeling.” That, he thought, was the best way to go about it. After all, he didn't say just what it was, only the symptoms, and would leave the conclusion up to Dean to make. He wouldn't confirm or deny anything. Getting it, Dean nodded again. “Look, I have to stop for gas soon. We'll find you something for your stomach then. That should make you feel better. You sure that you don't want to just call it a day and rest? We aren't doing anything, Sammy, and it's no big deal. We can just find somewhere to hole up for the day and you can get some sleep. It has to be better than the napping thing in the car.” Shaking his head, Sam was about to say no once more when he thought it over. Seriously, he just wanted to stretch out on a bed, even if it was lumpy, rather than sitting here curled up in the car. With a sigh, he rubbed his eyes then said, “If you don't mind... that might work better. I just want to stretch out.” Nodding, Dean told him, “I'll find us somewhere. Like I said, I have to get gas anyway. We'll get off the next exit and see what we can come up with. One night down isn't going to make any difference in this. If something bad happens, Cas can find us and get us there that way.” “There is nothing happening around so I don't think one night will matter, Dean,” Cas said as he popped into the back seat. Startled, hands jerking the wheel, Dean swerved into the other lane. Swearing, he corrected that then looked into the rear view mirror before huffing, “Dammit, Cas! You scared the shit out of me!” “That wasn't my intent,” Castiel told him seriously. “I heard the discussion and wanted to inform you that there is nothing going on that you're needed for today. Perhaps a day of rest will do both of you good,” the angel told him. Looking at Sam, though his face remained stoic as it always did, he felt some concern. He didn't look good, that was for sure. It was better than the night before, however. It was his assumption that this was just some lingering effects as the last of the demon blood was purified from his system. As much as he had to purge, not feeling well was a side effect that he could understand. Though he thought it would all be over by now, it appeared there were some lingering effects he hadn't counted on. However, it did appear that Sam was fine, just not feeling well was all. “Yeah, well, intended or not, you did,” Dean huffed, eyes starting to scan for signs that might give him an indication of how far until the next exit and what would be there. Scrubbing a hand over his face when he saw they only had a few more miles until they hit some kind of town, he said, “I wish there was a way for you to warn someone before you pop in. Especially when I'm driving.” “There isn't one, at least that I know of,” Cas told him seriously. Making sure that he kept an eye on where Dean was looking, he reached out and put a hand on Sam's shoulder, then gave it a squeeze to let him know he was concerned about what he was feeling. Glancing back after making sure Dean's eyes were firmly on the road, Sam gave Cas a soft smile and nod of his head to let him know he was fine mostly. Nodding back, Cas felt a little better about it. He hadn't wanted to cause the younger Winchester so much pain but he knew no other way to go about it either. This was the only thing he had known to do to get rid of it. Straightening up, Dean turned on the blinker when the exit was approaching then said, “Town ahead so I'll see what we can find, Sammy. Might not end up the best, but you can at least relax!” “Whatever, Dean, as long as I can stretch out, I'll be fine,” Sam told him as he took another swig of his 7-Up.Stretched out on the lumpy hotel bed, Sam felt slightly better than he had in the cramped car. The only issue was Dean was eating a greasy cheeseburger that was making his stomach contract in a not pleasant way. Groaning, he turned on his side then grabbed some of the crackers that were on the table. They were the cheese-filled kind that he normally adored. As he was sure part of the problem was he hadn't eaten anything, he slowly consumed it, hoping that having something in his stomach would help.
After a few minutes, when he was sure it was going to stay down, he took another drink of the soda then flopped back over onto his back, scrubbing a hand over his face. Grabbing a pillow, he put it over his head and groaned. He was feeling better, there was no doubt there, but he still felt like shit. “You sure you're alright there, Sammy?” Dean asked, glancing in his direction, a concerned look on his face. “I'm fine,” Sam told him, sound muffled by the pillow. “You know how this kind of thing goes; just takes some time to work itself out of your system.” “Yeah, I do,” Dean nodded. “As soon as I finish eating, I'll go out and get you something for your stomach while I load up on supplies. That should make you feel better.” “Yeah, that's good, Dean. Something for the stomach should help,” Sam told him with a soft groan. While trying to get as comfortable as possible, he wondered just how much longer this would go on. It was lessening, that he had figured out by now, but it was still bad. He hoped it wouldn't go on much longer. Nodding, Dean quickly devoured the rest of his lunch then snagged his keys. “Alright, let me go see what I can find. I'll be back as soon as I can.” Nodding to the two in the room, he vanished out the door, closing it softly behind him. Cas waited until he heard the engine roar to life then Dean pull out before he stood and walked over to the bed. Seating himself by Sam, he put a hand on his arm and asked, “Is it even improving?” “Yeah, it's quite a bit better than it was last night. Still not the greatest but I can live with it right now.” Lifting the pillow a little, he looked at the angel then asked, “Any idea how much longer this will last?” “I don't know.” Cas told him with a shake of his head, brow furrowing. “I had assumed that it would be over by now but it isn't. If I calculate it, I would say give it by nightfall and it should be done then you'll feel better. There was so much to purge that I miscalculated how long it would take.” “As long as I know this isn't going to keep up forever, I'm good,” Sam told him, letting the pillow drop over his eyes again. “Am I going to have problems with being around it? I mean, we kill a butt load of demons all the time.” “No, no problem,” Cas told him firmly with a shake of his head. “This will kill the addiction completely. That's why it was so painful.” Nodding, Sam sighed. “I hope so because I don't want to ever go through this again!” “No, this will ensure you don't,” Cas told him. “However, we need to do something about Ruby, fast. She's going to quickly figure out that whatever the link is to her because of the blood, that you broke it in some way. I assume her first thought will be that something's happen to you then she will turn up. We don't want that. So, if you're feeling up to it tonight, we should handle her. Provided, of course, Dean goes elsewhere.” “He will,” Sam snorted. “It's like he can't stand to be in the same room with me for too long. Still don't get that, but it'll give us what we need.” Frowning at the hurt and worry he could hear in Sam's voice, Cas said, “That's something we need to talk about soon, Sam. I know the cause, I just haven't told you. We will also need to deal with that end of things as well. However, Ruby comes first. I would like to attend to that issue tonight, if we can at all manage it.” “Yeah, if Dean leaves, I say we do it. As long as I get to off the bitch. I want her to see it's me and do it with her own knife!” Sam snarled. As Cas had mentioned the situation with Dean before, Sam was now curious as to what it entailed and why it was causing his brother to leave so often. However, they needed to take care of the worst of the problems first, before they could delve into that. “That's fine, she's yours,” Castiel told him, understanding why Sam would want to do such a thing. “We just need to do so fast before she gets wind that we might be up to something or you aren't falling in line with her.” “Yeah, I don't want to deal with her any longer than I have to!” Sam groaned. Hearing the rumble of the Impala returning, Cas said, “I will go for now. It'll look strange if Dean comes back in and I'm still here.” Pulling the pillow covering Sam's head up slightly, he leaned down and kissed him then vanished with the sounds of rustling feathers. Grinning slightly, shaking his head, Sam groaned and let the pillow drop back over his face. This was so strange but he was beginning to like it.Standing in a parking lot quite a distance away from the hotel they were staying in for the night, Sam was scrolling through his phone, glancing around nervously. Right now, he was waiting for Ruby. He had called her earlier and agreed to meet her here, making the excuse about the blood to do so. As it was one he had come across with before, she had bought it. As he thought it over, it seemed that the she-demon had sounded relieved that he had called, like it was a load off her mind or something.
Sighing, Sam glanced around, wondering where she was going to show up from. While doing that, he was trying to see if he couldn't pinpoint where Cas was. As he knew, the angel was somewhere close, but he didn't know where. However, Cas had assured him that he would know just what was going on and would step in before it went too far. Since he trusted Cas more than he used to, Sam was going to take his word for that then go with the flow when it came to things. As the minutes ticked by, the younger Winchester began to get more nervous about this. Could Ruby have picked up on something strange or had an inkling that he was changing his mind about all of it? He was sure that wasn't the case, but he couldn't help but wonder. Just as the doubts were beginning to really get to him and he was going to see if he couldn't find Cas, the lights around the parking lot began to flicker. Knowing this was a sure sign Ruby was probably coming, he tensed up even more. As unobtrusively as he could, he reached behind him to make sure the knife was firmly tucked in the waistband of his pants in the back. Feeling the hilt sticking out just how he wanted it, he pulled the back of his shirt down in such a way that it seemed like he was just straightening it out. When he looked around again, he saw Ruby making her way in his direction. Stiffening up, he waited. Walking Sam's way, Ruby plastered a smile on her face. Really, she was relieved that he called. If he hadn't, she was probably going to do so the next day or so to see if they couldn’t meet up. She was making steady progress with him, despite his issues with Dean, and wanted to keep it that way. No, she didn't like the way this was going, with the fits and starts as the two brothers dealt with their issues, and wanted it to be more of a steady progress than it had been, something like what had gone on while Dean was in hell. Him calling her was a good sign with that. Stepping in front of Sam, she smiled at him, “I was getting worried about you! Things going better?” Shrugging, Sam just smiled at her then said, “It's been complicated. You know what Dean's like. If he's not out boozing it up, he's keeping too close of an eye on me to do anything. Then there's the fact that he likes to monopolize the car so I can't really go anywhere. You know how it goes.” “I do,” she commiserated with a nod. “We ready to go though? No problems with Dean-o? 'Cause, to keep this up, you're going to need some more blood.” “Yeah, that's why I called you,” Sam told her, trying to look sincere and earnest about it. “Alright, good. At least we're on the same page! I got us a room not far off. We can work with it from there. We'll start with the whole blood thing then go out and practice. There are a few demons not far from here we can do that with,” she told him with a smile, glad that it was going so well. She was sure that by the end of the night, she would have him convinced to be fully back on board with this and it moving in the direction she needed it to. Once that was happening, and his need for vengeance was fueled by her blood, she could push him to doing what was needed. As she well knew, the seals were breaking at a good rate so it was time to make sure he had the strength to do what was needed. Hoping that Cas had everything in place, Sam smiled and nodded to her then took the agreed upon amount of steps back and waited. Almost as if it were on cue, fire burst from the ground in the form of a devil's trap. Breathing a slight sigh of relief that it was going as planned, he waited. Looking around, panicked, Ruby's eyes lit on Sam then she asked, “Sam? What's going on? Get me out of this! You know I'm not doing anything but trying to help you!” “Help me do what, Ruby? Release Lucifer?” Sam asked, tone cold. “Turn me into the perfect being to be his vessel when he comes back? I don't call that helping anything but your side!” “Now, Sam, I don't know where you heard that, but...” Ruby started, unnerved that he had that information, but was cut off. “He learned it from me,” Cas said, stepping out of the shadows. Spinning around, eyes widening, Ruby looked at the angel, chest heaving. Oh, this wasn't good and she knew it! Looking back at Sam, she said, “Now, I don't know what he told you, but you know me, Sam! I'm just trying to help you develop your powers! You can then get even with Lilith and take care of everything!” “Oh, I know you are. You want Lilith gone since she's the last seal,” Sam told her, tone deadly. Reaching back, he pulled her knife out then began to move forward. Backpedaling as far as she could in the trap, Ruby was stopped when she met the body of Cas. Trying to spin around, she was stopped when the angel's arms wrapped around her body, holding her firmly. Stepping in front of her, malevolent look on his face, Sam hissed, “The powers are gone, Ruby. Completely gone. Cas purged all the demon blood out of me! There isn't anyone to break that final seal now. No one left has the juice to do it! You all made sure I was the only one that could and now even I can't! However, they aren't going to know that since you aren't going to tell them!” Showing his lightning fast reflexes, Sam stabbed her right in the chest with her own knife. He waited until he saw the electrical flashes that came from the knife as it killed her. When they ended, he pulled it out then stepped back, by then the flames, which wouldn't hurt him anyway as Cas had conjured them, had died down, leaving nothing but some kind of scorch mark on the pavement. Looking down at the knife, and blood on it, for the first time in a long time, he didn't feel the pull to it. Instead, he just cleaned it off then re-sheathed it. Letting the body drop to the ground, Cas nodded. “That's one troublesome being out of this.” Looking over at Sam, he asked, “You're fine, are you not?” “Just fine, no problem on this end. I'm relieved, in fact. Now I don't have to worry about her and what might be happening from that end of things,” Sam told him truthfully. “I can understand that,” Cas said, looking down at the body. Glancing at what remained of Ruby, Sam sighed then asked, “Alright, since we got rid of her, might there be someone else trying to come back and do the same thing with me? I mean, whoever she's answering to is going to end up missing her. I doubt, honestly, she's doing this alone.” “She's not,” Cas confirmed with a nod. “She answers to Lilith herself, if what I've heard is right. And I do agree that someone is going to try. However, it'll take some time for her to be missed. I'll ensure that this body isn't found. As she seems to be working alone most times, I think we have some time. We can work with things from there. It just means that we have to press forward quicker and deal with Dean then get him on board with us.” “Yeah, well, I have a feeling the 'deal with Dean' part is going to be hard. I don't know what's up with him, but he's not been fun to be around, if he's around, that is. Then, if he finds out something’s going on between the two of us, he's going to react badly to it. Hell, dude, he doesn't even know I like guys!” Looking down, Cas sighed, “Yes, Dean is going to be an issue, I agree. He is having problems dealing with what happened in hell. After coming back, he's having even more issues because what happened is intruding on his life in such a way that he can't push it back. With you around, it makes it even harder. Then, when he finds out we are, how did you put that... exploring a relationship, it's going to make it worse. I concede this.” Stuffing his hands in his front pockets, Sam shook his head then said, “I wish I knew what the problem was so I could at least help! I mean, all I know is he can't stay in the same room with me for long! Is he mad, figured part of this out, what?” “He's fighting urges,” Cas told him softly. “Urges? What kind?” Sam asked, looking back at the angel, curious. Brow furrowing, Castiel looked down at the ground then said, “How is it you humans put this? I'm not sure...” Stopping, he thought it over then said, “Dean is viewing you in an erotic way.” Eyes widening to the point that they almost fell out, Sam stammered, “What? What do you mean by that? Are you sure erotic is the right word, Cas?” He was hoping like hell it was the wrong word for the sake of his sanity! Immediately latching onto that, he was convinced that Cas, because he misinterpreted so much, had just gotten something confused. “No, I think erotic is the right word,” Cas told him, looking back at Sam, brow drawn down. “It means in a sexual way, am I not right? Well, as Dean is viewing you with lust, I would say it's right.” Letting out a burst of hysterical laughter, Sam scrubbed a hand over his face then said, “Just when I thought this whole thing couldn't get any stranger than it is, it does!” Leaning his head back, he shut his eyes then groaned, “Oh, shit. Alright, Cas, tell me what the hell is going on!” “I thought it was pretty self explanatory, Sam, but I'll go into more detail.” Nodding, Cas then began to give the younger Winchester chapter and verse of how Dean felt about him, including that it was used against him in hell. Standing there, eyes bugging out of his head, heart hammering in his chest, Sam couldn't believe what he was hearing! Oh, man, just when he thought it couldn't get any stranger than an angel wanting some kind of relationship with him, his brother did as well? He didn't know how to handle this!
