Chapter Two
Feeling slightly defeated, Spencer left the bookstore and stood outside for a few moments contemplating his next move. This had been his third time this week he stopped to see if the girl was there. The owner was on vacation and wasn't going to be back for another two weeks. The person covering the store didn't have any information on the girl. He sighed and checked the time, it was mid afternoon. His stomach gave a gurgle, demanding he got lunch.
He headed for a small sub shop. He ordered himself a turkey sandwich and bottle of water. It was a beautiful day so he decided to eat outside at one of the small tables. He found himself an empty table and sat down. He unwrapped his sandwich and ate half of it. Wrapping up the other half, he decided to sit at the table for a while and read. He grabbed a book out of his bag and opened up to where he had left off.He wasn't sure how much time had passed when a voice he had before but couldn't place cut in, “Is this seat taken?”“No, you can-” Spencer looked up and his words caught in his throat. “...you...”She laughed, “Yes, me. May I sit?” Spencer nodded, unable to form words. She sat down and set her small backpack by her feet. “So, did you catch any bad guys lately?”“Umm..yeah...we, as in my team and I, just solved a case a few days ago. The guy responsible for the murder isn't going to see the outside world for a very long time.”“Good. FBI: one, bad guy: zero.”Spencer nodded. He then decided that it was now or never. “So the other day when you returned my badge, I never caught your name.”“Oh! Holy cows, you're right. It honestly never dawned on me that I never gave you my name. I'm Lyddia Ashwood.” She reached her hand out to him.Normally he wouldn't shake hands because of germs, but in this ONE case he made an exception. “I'm-”“ Dr. Spencer Reid.” She finished. He gave her a look and she laughed. “Your name is on your badge. I looked at it in case I couldn't find you to return it.”“I see.” He responded. “So how did you find me?”Lyddia shrugged, “Pure luck. I honestly had no idea how to find you short of going to the FBI headquarters. I doubt, though, that they would let me in just to chit chat. So I did what I’m sure you did, just hope that we run into each other again, and well, here we are.”Spencer nodded. “I had gone to the bookstore the day I got back from California, but you weren't there. I checked in a few more times, actually before I came here for lunch I stopped there.”“I haven't had time so far this week to do much outside my shop. Today I found that I was finally caught up enough with stuff to leave for a few hours. I'm glad for the change of scenery.”“You have a shop?”Lyddia nodded, “Yeah, I inherited it from my grandfather after he passed away. We do restorations; cars, furniture, old electronics, and some new ones too, and whatever else a person may bring in.”“What are you working currently?”“A 1960 Camaro Z28, but that's a personal project. I saw a for sale advertisement for it and fell in love. This has been one of my more challenging restorations, lots of blood, sweat, and tears. Well, mostly blood. It hurts beyond words when the wrench slips and you smash and scrape your knuckles on the engine,” Lyddia said. She pulled out her phone and played with it for a few seconds. Then she showed it to Spencer. “This is my baby. She is going to be one sexy car when she's done.”“That's really cool. I hope I'll get to see her when she's all done.”“For sure. In fact, you get to be my guest of honor on her first drive,” Lyddia said with a smile.Spencer was a bit shocked, “Umm...wow...” then he smiled, “Thank you. That's going to be a fun time.”Lyddia's smile grew. “Very much so. Anyway, now that you know a little about me, tell me about you. What makes Dr. Reid tick?”“Well, I enjoy going to Korean films and reading. Lots of reading. In fact, I can read 20,000 words per minute. I have an eidetic memory and an IQ of 187. I know some magic and like performing it when ever the opportunity presents itself. Halloween is my favorite holiday. I'm an avid fan of Star Trek, Star Wars, and Dr. Who. I have PhDs in mathematics, chemistry, and engineering and I have BAs in psychology and sociology. I was born in Las Vegas and joined the BAU when I was 22.” He answered.Lyddia was stunned for a second and then a smile came to her lips, “All that is very awesome, not going to lie. Especially having three PhDs and two BAS at only, what, 30? I like a guy with brains, and you, sir, have that and then some.”That made Spencer smile. He had come across many people that were intimidated by his level of intelligence, but Lyddia was honestly impressed. “That's great to hear. Except for those on the BAU team, a lot people don't know how to handle my level of intelligence.”“Bah, they're just jealous because they didn't have three PhDs and two BAs when they were 30 years old.”Spencer laughed, “I don't know about that. Not many people know I have those.”“Pfft, details,” Lyddia said with a dismissive wave of her hand. That made them both laugh. They spent the rest of the afternoon together, talking and walking aimlessly around. During that time he had made note of how she had dressed herself for the day. She pulled multicolored hair into a simple pony tail. She had dressed herself in a simple black-shirt and a pair of jeans. Even in basic dress, she looked amazing. She had even put on a light shade of lip stick. He even took note that she was wearing glasses with multicolored frames. He asked her about them, and she said that she wore glasses and only didn't have them on last time because they had to be repaired. When he asked about wearing contacts, she said she had tried them a long time ago, but hated them.As the day turned into early evening, they decided they continue to enjoy each other's company and get dinner. They were only a few blocks away from a popular bar and grill and decided to keep it casual and head there.Just as they got up to the front of the building, Spencer saw a group of familiar people coming towards them. Before he could say or do anything, they spotted him.“Hey, Reid!”Spencer sighed. He was hoping to have more one on one time with Lyddia before calling it a night, but now he wasn't so sure if that would happen.“Spencer, do you know them?” Lyddia asked.“Yeah...they're the group I work with.”Lyddia smiled, “Well, it looks like our night turned into a bit of a party. C'mon, let's go say hi.”He was relived that she was being good natured about the situation. It wasn't that he was never going to introduce her to the team, he just wanted to do so on his terms. And by his terms, that meant NOT on the first day they were only just getting to know each other.“Hey, you got my message. Awesome.” Garcia said.“Message? I honestly haven't touched my phone today.” Spencer replied. He then pulled out his phone and everything was explained. He had a message from her saying the team was getting together for a night out, and at the EXACT bar and grill he and Lyddia had decided to eat at. “I guess I got now.”“You mean you had no idea we were coming here?”Spencer shook his head, “No. I was busy spending time with Miss Lyddia Ashwood here.” He gestured towards Lyddia. She gave the group a warm smile and gave small wave to say hi. “Lyddia, I would like you to meet Penelope Garcia, Derek Morgan, Jennifer Jareau, Alex Blake, David Rossi, and Aaron Hotchner.” She shook their hands as he introduced them.“So now we know who was driving the good doctor crazy.” Derek said.Lyddia looked up at Spencer with a confused look. He coughed to avoid saying anything. “Well, let's go in.” The group went in, but Spencer held him and Lyddia back. “We'll be in a second.” He turned to Lyddia. “I'm sorry.”“About what?”“I was hoping on having a quiet time with you and-”“Spencer, relax. I would have had to meet them eventually. Tonight on neutral ground is probably the best. And besides,” she moved a little closer to him, playing with his shirt collar, “I'm very much certain that I've become crazy over you as well.” Then she looked up at him, a wide smile on her lips.Giving him a light tap on the chest, she turned to go in. A smile spread over Spencer's face, he knew that Lyddia was going to become more than friend, and he couldn't have been happier knowing that. The night was calm and clear. The moon was out and full. Arm in arm, Spencer and Lyddia walked down the quiet street. It was the perfect summer night and Spencer was a bit sad that it was coming to a close. They had walked in silence for a while. It wasn't an awkward silence, it was the silence of two people just simply enjoying being with each other. After playfully bumping into Spencer, Lyddia broke the silence.“I had a lot of fun today. It's hard to find the words to express how happy I was when I found you sitting at that table.” She looked up to the sky. “Maybe someone up there is watching over us and made sure we found each other again.”Spencer instantly thought of Maeve and a small smile formed on his lips. Lyddia may be right, maybe they were being watched from above and maybe the one doing so was the one woman that, until now, had his heart completely.“You may right,” he said. Lyddia gave a smile. The day had been filled with her smiles and laugh, and he was happy that he had been the one she had shared them with.“You're friends are really fun. We'll have to hang out with them again. I know with your job it won't be the easiest thing to plan, but there's no harm in trying. Though, before we do that, we'll have to make another night for just the two of us.”“That we will. And we'll be sure to check that no one we know will be there.”Lyddia laughed, “For sure.” She looked to her right. “Oh, this is my place.”The stood in front of large Victorian home. It had a large front lawn and there was a very well maintained garden on either side of the path way leading to the house. Down by the public side walk there was a three foot, white washed fence. The porch light was on and so was a small light in the large living room window.“I'll walk you to your door.”Lyddia smiled and lead the way up to the front door. She took out her keys and unlocked the door. They stood there in an awkward silence, unsure of how to say goodnight. They looked at each other for a second and then looked away, each giving a slight laugh.“Well, I guess I should get in. Vader and Yoda are probably wondering where I'm at.” Lyddia said, looking up at Spencer.“Vader and Yoda?”“My cats.”Spencer laughed. Then they fell back into a silence. After a moment or two, Lyddia stepped closer to him and wrapped her arms around him. He did the same to her, and something inside of him did not want to let her go, but he forced himself to do so. Before parting from the hug, Lyddia raised herself on her toes and kissed him lightly on the cheek. She gave him a smile. “Goodnight.”“Goodnight.”She went in and gently closed the door. Spencer waited to leave until he heard her lock the door. As he turned to leave, he heard her cats voicing their displeasure of her having been gone all day. He smiled as he heard her talk back to them. With a happy beat in his step, he made his way home. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
