Disclaimer: I do not own 'The Haunting Hour', nor the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
It's been a while since I last updated! I haven't had the time to write, like I thought I would. :( Anyway, the story will pick up more with the chapters past this one. :) Also, I haven't had any reviews yet, so pop on over to the review box when you've finished reading to tell me what you think! Fun Fact: People who think they have more time than they actually do, and are seldom on time, are called 'tidsoptomists'. :D
Josh reclined in Kymber's computer chair with his feet on the corner of the desk, and Kymber sat cross-legged on the edge of her bed across from him.
"So…," Josh began. His gaze wandered around the ceiling as he organized his thoughts.
Kymber subtly wrung her hands in her lap, Preparing herself for Josh to go back on his word, and tell her that she was out of her mind.
"So, your grandma randomly brought you a possessed box as a gift," he continued.
"Yeah, a recorder," Kymber said.
"Then a creepy demon crawled out of it and told you that you owe him for not killing you,"
"Right."
"And then," Josh continued, looking over at Kymber. "The demon also said that he's going to come and take you on the next full moon?"
"Yes." Kymber answered.
"Is that it?" Josh said.
"What do you mean 'Is that it'? I'm being serious Josh, look at what he did to me," Kymber said in a slightly raised voice, gesturing to her neck.
She couldn't help but feel a little hurt.
"Not like that! Like, is that everything you wanted to tell me?," Josh said, taking his feet off the desk and spinning the chair to face Kymber.
Kymber met her eyes with his for a moment. She sighed.
"Well," she said. "There is one other thing…"
Josh leaned forward. "What?"
"Well…he…the box," Kymber gestured like she was holding a box in her hands.
"Yeah," Josh said in a questioning, yet interested tone as he looked at her imaginary box.
"The box takes away fears," Kymber said.
Josh arched his brow.
"No, listen!" Kymber said.
"I am! Just tell me," Josh said, flipping his hand towards her.
Kymber sighed.
"It has the power to make fears disappear," she continued. "The demon made me tell him about my hallucinations, and made me describe why I was scared of them them, and he recorded them with the box."
"And now they're gone?"
"Yes," Kymber said.
"Maybe it's just your medicine doing its job," Josh said.
"That's just it, Josh," Kymber said, sliding off her bed to rummage through her bag. "I didn't take it today…"
Kymber held the pill box out for Josh to see. Sure enough, the little green pill was still in the cubicle labeled 'Tuesday'.
Josh's face dropped, and he glanced up at her. "Kymber…"
"I know," Kymber said. She stowed the box back in her bag, and looked back over to Josh. "But I haven't seen a single thing all day," she continued. "It's real."
Josh looked away for a moment chewing his cheek.
"Maybe you just had a lucid dream, and the remaining medicine in your system is what's keeping the hallucinations away. For now." he said.
"Explain the bruises then!", Kymber snapped.
Josh was surprised at Kymber's outburst, but kept his composure.
"You could have done it to yourself, while you were sleeping," he said. "People have lucid dreams all the time-"
"Nightmares," Kymber corrected. She crossed her arms and gazed out her window.
"Look, Kym, I'm sorry…but there are a million explanations for what you're experiencing," he said.
Kymber looked over at Josh.
She shook her head. "I knew it," she said, her voice cracking.
Her chest tightened and her eyes welled up. Kymber suddenly felt embarrassed though, and covered her face with her hands as she sank down on her bed.
"Kymber…"
Kymber heard Josh get up from her chair and the place on her bed next to her sank.
She kept her hands over her face and let the tear streams flow under them.
"I know what I saw," Kymber said in a choked voice. "I'm not making it up…"
"I'm so sorry Kym," Josh said, embracing her. "I just want to try and figure out what's happening to you. I want to help. Just tell me what you want me to do…"
"I don't know," Kymber sobbed.
Josh got up and grabbed the box of tissues from Kymber's desk and pulled a few out for her.
Kymber sniffled. She finally took her hands away from her face and looked up at Josh, taking the tissues.
"Thanks," she said.
Josh sat back down next to her.
Kymber had cried in front of him before on many occasions, and she never felt as strange as she did now. She felt like she was acting out of place.
"Kym?", Josh said.
She looked over at him. His brown eyes never looked as bright as they did in this moment.
Kymber's thoughts then went straight to wondering how ugly and swollen her face looked from all of her blubbering.
"Is there something else you need to tell me? I'm sorry if I made you feel like I wasn't listening before…"
Kymber looked at him, sighed, and thought for a moment. She decided there were a lot of things she would like him to know, but none were relevant.
"Well, the people who had the box before I did," she finally said. "I think I heard one of their voices on the recorder."
"Well, let's play it back. Maybe they left other recordings we can listen to," Josh said, getting up and standing in front of Kymber.
"We can't," Kymber said, bowing her head.
"Why?" Josh asked.
"Because he took it, Josh," Kymber said in a slightly raised voice, gesturing to the place on the shelf where the recorder box used to be.
"The demon?"
"Who else would I be talking about?" Kymber answered with a note of frustration.
Josh folded his arms and let his eyes wander around the floor as he chewed his cheeks, letting a sigh loose through his nose. Kymber knew this was more of a sign that the gears in his head were turning than an indication of being off-put. She still felt bad for being snippy, but let the window for apology pass by.
"Well," Josh said, breaking the silence. "I guess our best bet would be to follow the trail back as far as we can go, and hope that we can reach the original owners."
"But where would we even begin? I haven't even checked how much time we have until the next full moon," Kymber said.
Josh pulled his phone from his pocket and typed on it for a minute. "Tonight is the Dark Moon phase," he said, glancing up at Kymber.
He began typing up something else and Kymber came around next to him to see. Josh was looking over a calendar of moon phases.
"According to this, we have two weeks to figure something out," he said.
Kymber looked up at him. "Are you really serious about helping me with this?" she asked.
"Of course I am," he said, sounding rather surprised. "You're my best friend."
Kymber couldn't help but let the corners of her mouth turn up ever so slightly. "And you're not just playing along to make me feel better?"
"Well, I really don't want you to be worried about a demon coming to kidnap you, but I wouldn't say I was 'playing' anything," Josh said, tucking his phone away.
Kymber tilted her head to the side.
"We will find some kind of answer to this within the next couple weeks, I promise." Josh said with assuredness in his voice.
With a deep sigh, Kymber heaved a significant amount of worry from her chest. Not all of it, not even most of it, but it was enough to give her hope that Josh would help save her from the fate that awaited her.
"Alright, well," Josh said looking around the room for his pack.
"Are you leaving now?" Kymber asked, casually folding her arms.
"I have to go take care of some chores and stuff that my mom wanted me to do," Josh said, scooping his backpack off the floor and slinging it on. "But as soon as I'm done, I'm going to come right back here. I'll bring my laptop so we can do twice the searching."
"Searching? What we would even begin looking for, Josh? His tumblr?" Kymber said, feeling a small shred of her hope crumbling away.
Josh let out a light laugh. "No," he said. "But we are going to scour every website and every forum until we find something."
"Something like what, though?" Kymber asked.
"Anything," Josh replied. "First though, we should call your grandma and ask her where exactly she found the box. That might give us an area to work with."
Kymber thought for a moment. "Okay, I'll give her a call while you're gone. Hurry back," she said.
"I'll be back in about a half-hour," Josh said, opening her bedroom door and stepping halfway out.
"Oh, what time is your mom going to be home tonight?" Josh asked.
"She isn't," Kymber replied. "She's doing an overnight shift at the hospital."
"So she won't be here to kick me out? Awesome." Josh said. "I'll see you soon."
"See you," Kymber said.
She smiled at him as he shut the door, but it faded as she heard his footsteps fade down the hallway and the sound of the front door shutting.
Kymber took in a deep breath, pulled out her phone, and took a seat on her bed as she tapped her grandmother's contact icon on her phone. The connecting dial tone could be heard on the other end.
Kymber closed her eyes for a moment.
"Please have some answers for me…" she whispered to herself.
