Liam was in and out of consciousness for a few hours. Then he was shaken awake by Bobby. “Hey, how many of me do you see?” Bobby asked.
Liam blinked. “Three,” he answered honestly.
“Okay, well, this place ain’t safe, so we gotta go. I found Dean, we just gotta find Sam. Here,” he handed Liam his clothes. “If you’re seeing triple aim for the middle and get dressed.”
“We thought you were dead,” Liam said as he struggled through putting his clothes on.
“Like you I’m a little tougher to get rid of than that. Come on.”
Liam followed Bobby out into the hall on unsteady feet, occasionally walking into something. Bobby had to grab him by the arm and lead him. Eventually they came across a guy wheeling an unconscious Sam down the hall. “Hold the phone there, son. Who's this?” Bobby stopped him and picked up the chart to glance at at. “Yeah, this is the guy. Coverage lapsed. We're shipping him to County.”
Bobby took Liam’s hand and moved it to the rail of the bed. “Okay, I need you to grab the bed and hold on and keep up. Can you do that?” Liam nodded. “Good, let’s get out of here. Whatever you do, don’t fall.”
Bobby took them out to the ambulance bay and put Sam into the back of one and helped Liam in. Then he hot wired the ambulance and watched for Dean. He saw Doctor Gaines and a nurse come out instead. “Balls. Come on, Dean!”
Dean then hopped in the passenger seat and Bobby sped away. Dean looked back. “You okay, Babe?”
“I see three of everything and I think I’m gonna be sick,” Liam answered.
“Okay, close your eyes and breathe deep. You’ll be okay, you’re a tough little hobbit.” Dean turned to Bobby. “How bad are they hurt?”
“They both got skull fractures and brain swelling. We need to get some place safe so you three can rest and heal up.”
“Yeah, good plan, but where?”
“I’m thinking a cabin Rufus kept in Whitefish, Montana. I know Sam at least is gonna want to go home, but really I don’t think it’s a good idea until we get a handle on this leviathan thing. Can’t risk something following you guys there.”
“I agree,” Dean nodded. “Natalie and John’s safety has to come first. I don’t think Sam will argue with that.”
After a few hours they ditched the ambulance and stole another car. They did that once more until they got to the cabin. Bobby carried Sam in and laid him on the bed and Dean and Liam settled on the couch. Dean stroked Liam’s hair. “I’m sorry you got hurt and are seeing three of everything, but I am so glad you’re still kicking. You know, I know you hate being called hobbit, but I agree it’s a good nickname for you. If you’ve ever seen ‘Lord of the Rings’ you’d know the hobbits were like the heroes. They were really small, but they had a lot of heart, like you.”
Liam just nuzzled into Dean and fell asleep. Bobby came out after getting Sam settled. “Well, I’m gonna make a supply run. Be back in a bit.”
It took about twenty four hours for Liam to start seeing straight again, and Sam woke up the day after that. Dean explained to Sam that they had to stay away from the house for a while until they at least figured out how to kill a leviathan. Sam didn’t like it, but understood that Natalie and John’s safety was top priority. He did call her to let her know what was going on. She understood as well, and was just glad they were all in one piece. She of course gave Sam permission to go on a shopping spree and replace what had been lost in the fire, which was pretty much everything.
They stayed there three weeks while Dean’s leg healed. Bobby left to go fetch the Impala. When he returned he tossed Dean the keys. “My baby! Now I just got to get this stupid thing off and I can drive again.”
“So how is it out there?” Sam asked.
“Weird with a side order of bloody. Talked to a few hunters. They're running into the same kind of thing that set up shop at that hospital.”
“Yeah, and don't forget tried to kill us at your place,” Dean added.
“Well, consensus is they're, um, they're like shapeshifters only a lot more into eating folk. And nothing can kill them.”
“Good times,” Dean sighed. “Anything else?”
“Yep. They bleed black goo.”
“What about those chompers that you and the sheriff saw at the hospital? They still making spleenburgers?” Dean asked.
“Yeah, made some calls. That doctor never showed back up to work. Ditto a nurse and some administrator.”
“So they could be at any hospital in America,” Liam grabbed a soda. “Super.”
“Hey, grab me one while you’re up,” Dean said to him.
“Looks like it’s my turn to wait on you,” Liam said as he grabbed a soda for Dean too. “And looks like you get the last one.”
Bobby sat back in the chair. “Every last bit of info I ever had burned down, so...”
“What about this place?” Dean asked. “Rufus leave anything? Did you check the basement?”
“C-rations and dust. I don't think he'd been here in years. So, I got to go round up my old library.”
“I thought you said most of those books were one of a kind.” Sam looked confused.
“Yeah. That's why I stashed copies all over the place.”
Liam chuckled. “Seems smart and paranoid is a good combination.”
“Hey, uh, Sam,” Dean looked to his brother. “We're fresh out of grub. Want to make a run?”
“Sure. Yeah,” Sam nodded.
Dean tossed him the keys. “Be careful with her, would you? And, uh, Sam?”
“Yeah?”
“Pie.”
“Obviously,” Sam chuckled as he left.
“You and pie,” Liam shook his head and kissed Dean.
“Alright, you two behave so Sam doesn’t walk in on anything,” Bobby said before he left.
Sam returned about an hour and a half later with a few grocery bags. “I guess Bobby left already,” Sam said as he started putting things away.
“Right after you left,” Liam got up and started helping. He tried to put something on a top shelf and he couldn’t quite reach.
“Need help there, hobbit?” Sam laughed.
Liam glared at him. “I will get it,” he insisted. He climbed up on the counter to put the item away, and then lost his balance and fell.
Sam reached out to catch him. “Whoa! Stubborn hobbits need to be careful.”
Liam sighed when Sam set him down. “You know, three hundred years ago I was considered tall.”
“And now you’re a hobbit,” Sam chuckled.
“I need to figure out how to grow taller,” Liam grumbled as he sat on the couch with Dean.
“Babe,” Dean reached to stroke his cheek. “I want you to stay just how you are. It’s actually kind of funny, nobody expects much from you, but you pack a hell of a punch. Hey, where's the pie by the way?”
“I got cake. It's close enough, right?”
“No,” Dean glared and shook his head.
“Well, they didn’t have pie.”
Liam grabbed the cake and went to get a fork. “Well, hobbits like cake so I’ll take it.”
After a few hours Dean fell asleep on the couch. “Hey Liam!” Sam whispered.
“What?” Liam turned to him.
“Don’t wake Dean. Have you ever heard of a kitsune?”
“No, why?”
“Well, we hunted one when I was a kid, and I think I found another.”
“Why aren’t we waking Dean then?”
“Because he’s got a broken leg and can’t help anyway. Come on, man, I need you to come with me and help.”
“Okay, but what is Dean gonna do when he wakes up and we’re not here?”
“We’ll leave a note,” Sam scribbled on a piece of notebook paper and set it on the coffee table. “Grab your stuff and let’s go,” Sam grabbed the keys to the Impala.
Liam got in the car and Sam drove off. “Okay, so you mind filling me in on these things and why the hell we’re running off?”
“Okay, but turn your phone GPS off and then turn your phone off. Dean will just read us the riot act anyway.”
Liam sighed but took out his phone and fiddled with it. “Okay, done. Now spill.”
“Okay, we hunted one when I was young. I remember doing the research and stuff, which is why I think there’s another one. I’m wondering if it’s the daughter of the first one.”
“The first one had a daughter?”
“Yes. I met her. She was actually my first kiss.”
“Okay then.”
“Look, you were a vampire, so I thought if anyone would understand it would be you.”
“I was a vampire that really didn’t want to be a vampire.”
“Yeah, well, I don’t think she wanted be what she was either.”
“What exactly is your plan here?”
“I don’t know, okay? Right now I just want to investigate. If it’s not her then obviously we kill it. If it is, then I don’t know.”
“Okay,” Liam sighed and sat back.
They headed to the police station where the latest killing had happened. “You guys thinking this is another one, so called ice pick killer?” Sam asked a police officer.
“Same MO. Can't say I'm too broken up about this one.”
“Oh, you knew him?”
“Busted him half a dozen times. Real mensch.”
“So, what's the deal? Um, killer comes to town, ganks a lowlife, moves along? Stabs them all exactly the same, right? Behind the ear?”
“Yeah. No explaining a psycho. We left that detail out of the paper, though. How'd you know?”
“We worked a case like this a few years back.”
“Think it's related?”
“You find anything weird about the brains?”
“Like what?”
“Like missing.”
“Huh. Good question for the coroner.”
“Right. Thanks.”
Sam’s phone beeped and he took it out. “Three missed calls.”
Liam took his phone out. “Um, twelve missed calls from Dean, and two from Bobby. I think maybe Dean is freaking out just a bit.”
“Probably, and you can call him when we’re done.”
They headed into the morgue and asked to see the body. The coroner pulled it out for them. “We don't get too many murders out this way, much less a serial.”
“So what'd you find?” Liam asked.
“It's what we didn't find. Let me show you,” he turned the head and showed them a big hole. “Big chunk of mid brain went missing.”
“Mid brain, like pituitary gland?” Sam asked.
“Actually, their pituitaries were clear gone. How'd you know that?”
“Educated guess. Thanks. We’ll be in touch.”
They walked out and Sam turned to Liam. “I need you to pick the motel and check us in.”
“Why?”
“Because Dean knows me too well. He knows what motel I’d pick and why. He knows what aliases I use. You’ve got random chaos in your skull. I don’t think he can track you, at least not nearly as easy.”
“Fine, give me the keys.”
Sam handed him the keys and they drove around aimlessly for a little while until Liam spotted a motel and pulled in. “Why this one?”
Liam shrugged. “Purple.”
“Exactly my point,” Sam sighed. “Now go check us in,” he ordered as he started gathering their things.
Liam narrowed his eyes. “I’m just a crazy monkey to you, aren’t I?”
“You’re my insane little hobbit. Liam, please. Go pull a name out of your ass.”
Liam got them the room and Sam started pinning everything he had up on the wall. He marked everywhere there was an attack with an X and drew a line between them. Then he circled another location. “I think this is where the next attack is going to be. Let’s go.”
Sam drove out to a park in the woods and they sat and waited. “So, um, what are we looking for?” Liam asked.
“Anyone looking suspicious.”
A car drove up and a woman got out. Sam leaned forward to get a better look. “My god, it is her! Come on, let’s follow.”
They tracked her through the woods to the road. She was stalking a drunk man standing outside his car. Sam sneaked up behind her and held a knife to her chest. “Hi, Amy.”
She looked shocked to see him. “Sam. Wow. I just never thought I'd see you again. What are you doing here?”
“I think you know.”
“You got tall, huh?”
“Small talk? Really? Let’s take a walk.”
They walked back into the woods a little ways with Sam still holding the knife to her chest. “Who is this?” she asked when she saw Liam.
“My brother’s boyfriend, and ex vampire. So, same pattern, same victim pool, just like when we were kids.”
“No, I… It's not what, look, I'm not, I've had the same job for the last six years. I have a house, two cats, a mortgage. I have a normal life.”
“You call this normal?”
“Sam. What I am, I'm managing it.”
“You spiked three guys this week.”
“No, you don't understand. It's not like that. I'm not just some murderer. I had to.”
“Why?”
“I can't, I just had to. Please believe me, Sam.”
“I can't. I'm sorry.”
Liam inched closer and reached into her pocket without either Amy or Sam noticing him. “So am I,” Amy said as she knocked the knife out of Sam’s hand and slammed his head against a tree. He fell and she ran off.
Liam knelt down next to Sam to check on him. He was out, but only for a few seconds. “Saw that coming,” Liam held up the papers he grabbed. “So, what do you want to do now?”
Sam smiled at him. “This is why I brought you. I was too wrapped up in emotion, but you, my insane little hobbit...”
They managed to track her down using a receipt and found her packing a suitcase. “How did you find me?”
Liam held up the receipt. “Sorry, I got sticky fingers. Amy Pond, huh? Cute name. You weren't kidding about the mortgage.”
“Sam...” she turned to him looking scared.
He noticed fresh blood on her hand. “Wait, that's fresh. That's not mine. So, you killed again!”
“You think I wanted to?”
“I think you better tell me exactly what you're doing, or I have to kill you whether I want to or not!”
“I can't. Sam, you know me.”
“No, I knew you. But that was a long time ago.”
“No, you know me. You know the kind of person I am.”
“All right. So then tell me what's going on.”
“Drop the knife and I'll show you.”
“Show me and I'll drop the knife.”
“Don't move, either of you.”
She opened a door to reveal a sleeping little boy. “This is Jacob my son. I've built a life here, Sam. I'm in the PTA. I'm boring.”
“But you're still feeding.”
“On the dead. I'm a mortician. I know. Not sexy, but, you know, health benefits. I quietly take what Jacob and I need. No one gets hurt. But it can be risky, feeding like that, especially for a kid. Jacob got sick. He was dying, and the only way to fight it off was...”
Realization dawned in Sam’s eyes. “He needed fresh meat.”
“That’s actually clever,” Liam admitted. “If only vampires could feed on the dead, that would’ve been an awesome solution to my problem.”
She turned to him. “So then you understand?”
“Not liking what you are? Yeah, I do. Of course, I got Sam and his brother to fix me. Really do not miss blood. That’s why Sam brought me instead of his brother.”
She turned back to Sam. “It worked. After the last one, his fever broke. It's over.”
Sam swallowed hard. “You can't guarantee that.”
“I give you my word. So, how is spilling more blood gonna help anyone? You could still walk away from this. We both can. Sam, after what I did for you.”
“What did she do for you?” Liam asked.
“She killed her own mother to save my life.”
Liam nodded. “Yeah, I’d say you owe her one. Of course, I don’t owe her a damn thing, but I’ll leave this up to you, because yeah, I get it.”
“Let’s just go,” Sam lowered his knife and turned around.
“Okay,” Liam shrugged and followed him out.
Sam drove back to the motel and opened the door. Dean stepped out and punched him. “Howdy, Sam. New rule. You steal my baby, you get punched. The hell were you thinking, Sam, running off like that?” He turned to Liam. “And you, you damn Judas. You owe me a little better than that I think.”
“Dean, don’t blame him,” Sam said as he gingerly rubbed his face. He pulled a soda out of the refrigerator and held it to his head. “He wanted to wake you but I talked him out of it. There was a job and I needed him.”
“A kitsune. Yeah. No, I know. And you ignore Bobby and my phone calls why, exactly?”
“Because I wanted to take care of it. And I did. I took care of it.”
“Really?” Dean narrowed his eyes. “Where's the body?” Sam didn’t answer so Dean turned to Liam. “You can’t lie to me, so tell me, what happened?”
Liam looked down at his feet. “I can’t lie, but I can plead the fifth.”
“Liam...” Dean growled.
“I let her go, okay?” Sam confessed.
“You what?” Dean looked angry.
Sam sat on the bed and told them the entire story of meeting Amy as a kid and what Amy did to her mother to save him. “You never told me that,” Dean looked surprised.
“I never told anyone. I mean, can you imagine what Dad would have done?”
“So you saw the article in the newspaper, and you just grabbed my man bolted.”
“It was my mess. I brought Liam with me because I knew he’d understand better. She killed her own mom, Dean, to save me.”
“I hear you, Sam. I do. But look at her now. She's dropping bodies, man, which means we got to drop her, no matter how many merit badges she racked up when she was a kid. I'm sorry, but it's that simple.”
“Says the hunter who had sex with a vampire, which I supported by the way if you remember.”
“That’s different.”
“How?”
“He came to us to fix him. He never killed except in self defense. We did fix him so there’s absolutely zero chance of him feeding off someone in the future.”
“She works at a damn funeral home so she doesn't have to kill anyone, Dean. She's figured out how to deal too.”
“Okay, well, then explain the bodies.”
“She's done. Her friggin kid was dying, Dean. Put you or me in her position, we'd probably do the same thing. Look, you don't trust her. Fine. Trust me. Dean, please.”
“Okay,” Dean sighed.
“Seriously?” Sam looked surprised.
“Got to start sometime, right? Plus, it would seem Liam trusted your judgment, and I know he’s not an idiot.”
“How did you find us anyway?” Sam asked.
“It wasn’t easy. First I figured out what you were after and where you would go. I checked the usual places for the usual names, and when that didn’t work I took your descriptions to every motel in town until I found someone who recognized one of you. Jeddediah Mitchell, really?”
Liam shrugged. “He told me to pull a name out of my ass so I did.”
“You picked the motel too, didn’t you?”
“Yeah. Sam said you knew him too well and I’m too random to track, so...”
“So, no particular reason for this motel?”
“Nope.”
“Well, it took all day, but I still found you two. Let’s get some dinner and some sleep.”
Liam pressed up against Dean and pulled out the puppy dog eyes. “I’m sorry we freaked you out. Forgive me?”
Dean’s shoulders dropped. “You can’t lie to me, and I can’t stay mad at you. What a pair we make.”
After breakfast in the morning Dean called Bobby to check in with him. After he hung up he turned to his companions. “We'll hole up in Spokane tonight. We'll meet Bobby tomorrow. Why don't you drive, Sam?”
Dean tossed the keys and Sam caught them. “You gonna punch me again?”
“Nah, you’re not stealing it this time. Come on.”
When they reached Spokane Sam pulled into a motel parking lot. “Hey, why don't, uh, you guys check us in? I got to hit the candy store,” he held up a bottle of pills. “Doctor's orders.”
Sam and Liam got out while Dean slid into the driver’s seat and drove off. Liam waited in the room until Dean came in. “You found her and killed her, didn’t you?” he looked up at Dean.
“You’re a smart one,” Dean said as he took off his jacket. “Just don’t tell Sam, please.”
“You better hope he never asks. I can’t lie to him either. You know, she didn’t choose to be what she was any more than I chose to be a vampire. How is it different?”
“I told you, you never killed unless you absolutely had to. You drank cold blood out of bags while with us, and when you absolutely needed fresh you found willing donors. Also, you’re cured, so all you’ll ever kill from now on is demons and monsters. If you had broken the rules I would’ve killed you too.”
“Well, I guess it’s a good thing I didn’t.”
“Very,” Dean said as he sat on the bed beside him and kissed his neck. “Come on now, tomorrow is the fourth year anniversary of the day we met. I think it’s time we get reacquainted.”
“Do you now?” Liam raised an eyebrow as Dean took his shirt off him.
“I do,” Dean smiled as he pushed Liam down on his back and reached to pinch a nipple between his fingers while he kissed Liam passionately.
