Chapter 3
If I thought the buzz of Alex’s heat would distract everyone from me, I was dead wrong. Heads turned as soon as I parked my bike in the bike rack, I knew everyone could smell me now, plus Alex wouldn’t be there to overwhelm me anymore, he wouldn’t be at school until after his heat was over and they generally lasted a week. As soon as I walked inside three of the schools Alphas were around me, I surprised myself and them by emitting a threatening growl before heading towards my locker. Why was I warning them away? I should encourage their attention and affections, right? By the time I made it down the hallways to my locker I had every Alpha at the school right behind me jockeying for position to be closer to me. Zach won standing right behind me; he leaned in sniffing at my neck, “Damn Clay, you sure smell good this morning, even better than Alex did.” He reached down stroking my back when a familiar growl was heard.
It was the Alpha from last night, I could tell by his scent, the rest all scattered but not too far. I could sense him behind me and I heard “After the way you reacted last night I didn’t think I was going to see you today.” I felt the brush of a hand on my neck and I twirled around to see…Jeff? I looked left, than right, than back in front of me. I took a hesitant step forward then leaned in to take in his scent, “you’re an Alpha?” The confusion must have been all over my face because he just started to laugh in a relieved way. I scowled and punched him in the chest “I don’t see what’s so funny you jerk” I turned around, grabbed what I needed, shut my locker and started walking to my first period deciding to ignore him until I could wrap my head around this new information. I know I had secretly wished for him to be an Alpha, but now I wasn’t sure if he was protecting me because he wanted me or because he felt some sense of obligation towards me.
He settled in behind me like he normally did which I now realized was a very Alpha-like position flanking an Omega, I started to wonder what he was up to when he followed me into my calculus class. When I sat down he took Marcus’s seat behind me and I realized he was going to take the protection of me seriously. I decided I would just continue to ignore him because to be honest I was a little hurt that he had never told me he was an Alpha when he apparently knew I was an Omega. When Marcus came in he just took one look at the two of us and sat in a different seat, everyone was staring at us or were they just staring at me? Either way, everyone was staring but no one had said or whispered anything. Probably because of Jeff, everyone liked and respected him, which no that I thought about was yet another sign I had missed that he was an Alpha. The teacher took a look around the room and said “Jeff go find your 1st period class, this is calculus” after the bell rang.” “I’m afraid I can’t do that today sir, I’m sorry but I’ll be staying right here.” The teacher looked shocked and took a deep breath to say something then seemed to have a lightbulb moment after he got a whiff of the two of us. “Alright, then shall we get started class?”
I buried my racing thoughts and just decided to focus on math, numbers at least always made sense. I could feel Jeff’s eyes on me but I was determined to ignore him and the way he made me squirm. All he wanted to do was rub all over Jeff to try and seduce him with his scent and preen to get his attention as a potential mate. He caught himself fussing with his hair and softly snarled in agitation with himself, he could and would control his inner Omega. The bell rang way to soon and jolted him out of his thoughts, he heard Jeff’s soft laugh behind him and he turned beat red in embarrassment, before getting his books together and heading to his next class. So the day continued with him trying to ignore Jeff and Jeff not leaving him alone for a single second, he even followed him to the bathroom!! Clay knew that would all change when lunch rolled around, Jeff would go and sit with his jock friends and Clay would find a quit table to sit at by himself and work on his homework.
Yet Jeff was still right behind him when he walked into the cafeteria, on into the food line, and when he walked to his normal table and sat down, Jeff sat right next to him. He could feel the eyes of everyone in the school on them but he knew as long as Jeff was there no one would bother him. “What are you doing Jeff?” Jeff turned to me with a surprised look on his face and said, “I thought that would be obvious Clay.” I huffed in frustration “I know because I’m weak and an Omega you feel obligated to protect me because you are an Alpha and my friend, but if you ignore all of your friends and don’t let any other Alphas approach me, I won’t be able to find my mate and people will think you are courting me.” A display of emotions ranged across Jeff’s face and I had troubles telling what they were they changed so fast but they ended with frustration. “If that’s what you want I’ll leave you alone Clay.” He got up and started to walk away but stopped and turned around “If things get to rough and you need help Clay, please let me know.” Then he walked away to his usual seat and I’m sure a mass of questions from his friends.
As soon as he was gone a few Alphas, Zach included, made their way to me and started talking and showing off in their own ways to get my attention. All of them wanted to touch me, a brush of the hand here and there to try and make me smell like them but I snipped at each time one of them when they did it so they stopped. I glanced over to where Jeff was sitting and felt slapped when I met his angry eyes. I didn’t understand why he was angry, was I letting the other Alphas get to close? No I hadn’t let any of them go further than what was proper, so why was Jeff angry? I shook my head and decided for the millionth time that day to clear my mind of thoughts of Jeff. As much as I would love for him to be my Alpha he seemed much more inclined towards the female Omegas and he has never indicated an Alpha interest towards me that I had noticed.
After the last period of the day I realized none of the Alphas felt right, I hadn’t let any of them come close. I got on my bike and started heading home when a car stopped right in front of me. The driver got out and I instantly recognized Blake. Before he could get out of his car Tony pulled up, “Hey Clay, do you need a ride?” I jumped into Tony’s car without a second thought leaving my bike on the sidewalk. “Drive Tony, please let’s go now.” “What about your bike Clay?” I could see Blake getting out of his car, “Forget the bike, and please, let’s go.” Tony didn’t ask any more questions, we were off and I could see Blake’s angry expression in the rearview as we speed away.
“You never told me you were an Omega Clay.” “I never told anyone I was an Omega Tony.” Tony just laughed, “fair enough, who was that guy, an Alpha?” “Yeah, he’s from another school, he was at the baseball game last night, seems he’s taken an interest in me.” Tony glanced at me then back at the road, “Do you want his attentions?” “Would I have raced away if I did? Hell no he hypnotized me last night; honestly Tony the guy scares me.” “Did anything happen? Did you tell Jeff?” I gave him a questioning look, “No nothing happened, because of Jeff actually, he scared him off last night.” I waited a second before my curiosity got the better of me. “Why did you ask if I told Jeff?” Tony gave me a surprised look, “Isn’t he your Alpha?” “No, why would you think so?” “Wait Clay, you’re telling me Jeff hasn’t marked you or let you know his intentions at all?” “No he hasn’t, I don’t think he sees me as a potential mate Tony, I think he just feels like I need protection.” Tony shook his head as we pulled up in front of my house, “I suppose it’s none of my business but if you need any help you just let me know, ok?” “Ok Tony, thanks for the save.” “Anytime Clay”
