3. The Escape
Kaelus, Tarin and Lykos were standing in a row on the wooden platform in the banqueting hall, each of them thrusting into a slave girl from behind. Livia was enduring Kaelus's forced attention with her usual stoic despair, but Talia was shedding floods of silent tears as she listened to Tarin's childish sobs behind her. Lykos and his companion – whose name the three boys still did not know – were both staring straight ahead with a detached, vacant gaze.
Since his brutal ordeal with the whip, Kaelus's entire torso had become a patchwork of scar tissue, and he had lost a great deal of muscle definition. This had made him deathly afraid that he would be judged unsuitable to take part in the forced display, and that Aulus would be chosen to replace him. (Aulus's own scars from the whip were confined to his back.) However, to Kaelus's infinite relief, no mention of such an arrangement had been made.
Before Aulus's arrival, Kaelus would have given anything to be excluded from duties such as this, but with his younger brother apparently next in line to take his place, he would have given anything to be allowed to continue his sexual performances in spite of his permanent disfigurement. For once in his life, the fates had granted Kaelus his wish.
As they released inside the slave girls, Kaelus, Tarin and Lykos felt the familiar mix of shame, humiliation and guilt, but the act also stirred a new sense of hope in all three boys as they thought about what was to come next. However, the master had other plans.
'Again,' he said simply.
Having half-expected this command, Kaelus was still inside Livia. He resumed his thrusts with a detached sense of mechanical efficicency, but Tarin and Lykos were both forced to steel themselves to start the whole process again from the beginning.
Tarin wept bitterly as he entered Talia for the second time, while Lykos barely managed to force himself to push his way back into the third girl, simmering with anger and frustration as he did so. The master's guests were enthralled by the scene, revelling in the obvious discomfort and distress of the six young people on the platform.
Tarin's entire body was wracked with pain when he released for the second time, while Kaelus and Lykos both found that they felt nothing whatsoever, either physically or emotionally. All three girls turned their heads as the boys withdrew, the six of them sharing a brief moment of connection through their combined humiliation.
The master then declared the entertainment over for the evening, reigniting the earlier spark of hope that the three boys had experienced.
'Can you do it?' Lykos whispered to Tarin.
'I'd find it harder not to do it,' Tarin replied ruefully.
'I'll be ready,' said Kaelus.
After they had been led from the hall by two guards, Tarin collapsed in the corridor. Lykos let out a cry of alarm and knelt down to tend to him. Cursing and snarling, the guards attempted to force both boys back to their feet, threatening to drag Tarin along by his hair if necessary.
Amidst this scene of confusion, Kaelus slipped away and set off after the retreating forms of the three slave girls.
The barred door to the ludus crashed open and Kaelus was propelled violently over the threshold. He stumbled, and fell in a heap on the cold, hard floor.
'You can see your girlfriends again when you are ordered to and not before!' one of the guards snarled.
'You'll probably be sent for public castration if we tell the master where we found you,' said the second guard. 'And believe me, we will tell him.'
The one who had spoken first gave Kaelus a particularly painful kick in the gut, then the guards left the ludus and locked the door behind them.
Much to his own disgust, Kaelus experienced a moment of desire and relief at the thought of being castrated. Then the full horror of the threat – of everything it would mean for himself and for Aulus – gripped his heart with fingers of ice and he started trembling all over. As he dragged himself unsteadily to his feet, Lykos and Tarin approached him.
'Did you do it?' Lykos asked urgently.
Kaelus nodded, his voice strained but firm. 'Yes. We're on.'
There was a moment of silence as the weight of his words settled between them. All three boys knew that they were teetering on the edge of something dangerous, but after everything they had endured, they were ready to risk all they had left – even their very lives – for a chance at freedom.
Several hours later, Kaelus was waiting by the bars of the ludus door, his heart pounding in his chest. He heard the soft pad of footsteps approaching, barely audible in the quiet night. He held his breath, straining to see through the darkness until a familiar form emerged from the shadows.
Livia moved with cautious urgency, her eyes darting around to ensure they were alone before she reached the bars where Kaelus stood waiting. 'Kaelus,' she whispered, her voice steady but laced with the same nervous energy that he felt.
'Livia,' he replied softly, relief and concern intertwining in his chest.
Wasting no time, Livia pulled out a small key from the folds of her tunic. She reached through the bars and pressed it into his hand.
'This is it,' she said quietly.
Kaelus felt the cold metal of the key against his palm, its weight symbolic of the chance it represented. 'You really did it,' he murmured, awe and gratitude filling his voice. 'I... I don't know how to thank you.'
Livia shook her head, a faint smile tugging at her lips. 'You don't need to thank me, Kaelus. You deserve better than this place... this life.'
The weight of her words settled heavily on him. 'So do you,' he said, his voice thick with emotion. 'Come with us, Livia. Fetch Talia and the other girl – I'm so sorry, I don't know her name – and... and we'll work out a way to get all three of you through this door, and... and...'
Livia smiled sadly and said, 'Her name is Eira.'
She reached through the bars again, this time to touch Kaelus's cheek. The warmth of her hand was a stark contrast to the cold iron bars that separated them.
'There's no escape for us,' she said, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. 'Just make sure you get as far away from here as you can.'
They fell into a brief, poignant silence. Livia's hand lingered for just a heartbeat longer before she withdrew it.
Kaelus held the key tightly, as if afraid it might vanish if he let go. 'Livia...' he started, his voice faltering as he searched for the right words.
'I have to go,' she said, her voice trembling ever so slightly. 'Before someone comes.'
Kaelus nodded, swallowing hard against the lump in his throat. Livia turned and dashed back along the corridor; her wraith-like form was soon shrouded in shadow.
Kaelus, Lykos and Tarin moved through the shadows of the ludus, careful not to draw any attention to themselves.
'Aulus,' Kaelus whispered, gently shaking his brother awake.
Aulus blinked up at him, his eyes wide with confusion and lingering fear. 'Kaelus?'
Kaelus knelt beside him, his voice soft but urgent. 'We're getting out of here, Aulus. Right now.'
Aulus's eyes widened further, but he nodded, trusting his brother completely. 'Okay.'
Kaelus lifted Aulus into his arms, holding him close as they moved swiftly through the darkened halls, Lykos leading the way. They reached the outer wall of the ludus, where the small, little-used gate awaited them. Tarin unlocked it deftly with the key that Livia had provided.
'It worked,' Lykos remarked, breathing an enormous sigh of relief. 'Whatever happens next, at least we'll be free when it does.'
Kaelus paused, glancing back at the place that had been his prison and his battleground for so long.
'You okay?' Tarin asked, touching his arm gently.
'Yes,' said Kaelus, turning back to his friends. 'Let's go.'
They slipped through the aperture and out into the night. Tarin locked the gate behind them, retaining the key with the intention of throwing it into deep water at the first opportunity. The hearts of all four boys were pounding with the thrill of their newfound freedom and the uncertainty of what lay ahead, but they had made their choice now, and there could be no turning back.
