Veronica sat on the bed, watching the movie while Josie and Cheryl painted each other's nails. She couldn't stop thinking about the figure she saw near the woods. She glanced at the other two, who seemed less worried.
Her phone buzzed, and Veronica looked down, smiling when she saw it was Archie. It was around 8 PM.
"Is that Archie?" Cheryl asked, looking up from her toenails. "Yeah, he was just checking on me," Veronica smiled, texting back. "So, is he checking to see if anything happened?" Josie asked.
Veronica looked at them both. "He's just checking in because he's worried," she said with a shrug, leaning forward. "And so am I," she added, causing Josie and Cheryl to raise their eyebrows.
"Worry about what?" Josie asked, setting down her red nail polish. The TV played scenes of Greece. "About the shadow figure I saw near the woods," Veronica said, putting down her phone.
Cheryl looked at the shorter girl, her eyes narrowed. "Are you sure it wasn't a deer?" she asked, finishing her last toenail.
"I'm sure it wasn't a deer, the more I think about it," Veronica replied, looking at the redhead. "It was standing on two legs, and I don't think a deer could stand on two legs," she pointed out.
Cheryl shared a confused glance with Josie, both clearly not wanting to consider what the shadow figure might be. "It could have been my mom, or it could have been my uncle; they live in the barn," she said.
Veronica started to speak, but Josie cut her off. "Are you sure you're not missing Archie?" she asked. "I miss Archie, but this isn't about him," Veronica said, frowning.
"I don't know, Veronica, but I think Archie is influencing you. You're so paranoid," Cheryl said, tapping Veronica's arm. "Everyone is still on edge about what happened at the musical." She tried to reason with Veronica.
Veronica stared at Cheryl to protest, but knew it was pointless. "I guess so," she sighed softly, watching as they turned back to the TV. Veronica still felt uneasy.
- Later that night -
Veronica got out of bed after they finished watching the movie. It was now 10 PM, and two hours had passed since Archie texted her.
She looked around the room. Cheryl and Josie were asleep, one at each end of the bed. Veronica smiled as she got up, careful not to kick either of them or wake them. She only needed to go to the bathroom and get some water.
The only lights in the room were the TV, which was showing a random show since they had fallen asleep without turning it off, and the moonlight coming through the window.
Veronica yawned as she finished using the bathroom and washed her hands. She headed downstairs, turning on the stairway light so she could see.
The raven-haired girl smiled. She heard the TV in the living room, where Nana Rose was. She probably thought the old woman was either asleep in her chair or watching TV.
- Outside Of The House-
The figure looked at his companion, "Let's go, Mitch." He said they wanted to finish quickly and get the money they were promised. Mitch nodded and looked at him, taking out his gun.
"What's the plan, Tim?" Mitch asked as he checked his gun. "Get the girls as fast as possible. Nick wants it done, and don't hurt either of them unless you have to," Tim said.
Mitch nodded and followed Tim, who quickly ran past the gravel driveway to the back of the house. "Let's go in the back quietly and slowly," Tim whispered as they reached the back door. They both stopped when they saw movement in the kitchen.
Tim put a hand on Mitch's shoulder when he saw one of their targets walk into the kitchen. "Let's wait until she passes, then we can sneak in," he said.
Mitch nodded, watching the teen walk past the back door. He clenched his hand, and as they waited, he shifted his weight. He didn't see something beside him and knocked it over, making a loud noise. He bit his lip and turned to see it was a rake that had hit a trash can.
Tim quickly grabbed Mitch and pulled him behind something. They watched as the girl stepped out to see what happened.
- Inside The house -
Veronica went to the kitchen. After turning on the light, she took a glass from the cabinet and filled it halfway with water. She brought the glass to her lips.
Leaning against the counter, she drank her water. After finishing, she put the glass in the sink and was about to go upstairs.
A loud noise outside made Veronica stop near the stairs. Biting her lip, she felt the same uneasy feeling she'd had all night.
Veronica had tried to share her bad feeling with Josie and Cheryl during a few movies. But they just laughed, thinking she was missing Archie.
Ignoring her bad feeling, the raven-haired teen decided to check it out. "It could just be a cat or something knocking something over," she told herself as she opened the back door.
The only thing she saw was a rake leaning against the trash can. She narrowed her eyes, trying to remember if the rake had always been there or if it was leaning against the wall.
Veronica looked around a bit, then called out to see if anyone was nearby. Her first thought was about the shadowy figure near the woods, but no one answered. Shaking her head, she went back inside and headed upstairs.
The Latina didn't like the feeling she was getting, as the figure was still on her mind. Maybe she should call Archie, but she didn't want to wake him if he was asleep. So, her only option was to wake Josie and Cheryl.
She knew she should have warned Josie and Cheryl about the figure she'd seen near the woods, but she didn't want to scare them. She went upstairs to wake them up.
Tim waited for the girl to go back inside and close the door. He turned to Mitch with an annoyed look. "Are you trying to get us caught?" he whispered.
"Sorry, I didn't see the rake," Mitch whispered, watching the girl.
"We should hurry and finish this," Tim said, stepping out of the shadows.
Mitch nodded and followed Tim. "New plan: let's turn off the power and then go in. I'm sure she'll warn the others, and they'll try to escape," Tim said, walking around the house. "And I want to get them before they call for help!"
Mitch nodded again. "Sounds good." He then heard Tim's phone buzz. He watched as the blond pulled out his phone and answered it. "What's taking so long?" he heard Nick St. Clair on the other end.
"Sorry, yes, I understand. We'll get this over with," Tim promised before hanging up. "Nick told us to hurry up," he told Mitch as they reached the electrical box.
