Ace’s eyes
were old, Rose thought. Older than even
the Doctor’s seemed to be at times. Her
voice was strong though, traces of an East London
accent rending Rose’s heart with it’s
familiarity. London was not the same for her now, not
without Jackie and Mickey there. Some tiny
part of her thoughts shouted out for her to try and make friends with Ace, try
and get on her good side and maybe they would both laugh about this some day,
like she and Sarah Jane had laughed about the Doctor’s silly tics and
habits. Reality forced her to pay
attention, though, as Ace’s voice grew more strident. The former companion was practically shouting
out the Doctor’s list of crimes, her eyes closed, face
reddening as she let some long withheld emotion well up within her breast. The Doctor stood silently, unmoving as he
stared at the floor at Rose’s feet; a thick silence had fallen on all but Ace
and her litany. It could not have been designed more perfectly, Rose thought as
her spine straightened and her hands gripped the throne’s arms tightly. Sitting up straight, she said in a calm, firm
voice, “Stop.”
Ace trailed off, her eyes opening
and finding the
Doctor at the foot of the throne. The
other Time Lords were not even rustling their robes in the quiet that followed
and lasted for all of one or two long moments.
Finally, Ace spoke. “You don’t
understand,” she all but whispered and for the first time, Rose realized that
the other young woman had kept her eyes closed not out of anger, but to hold
back a well of tears. “This must be
done, according to their laws.”
“Their,” Rose said sharply,
standing in a flowing motion and folding her arms at her waist. “You said ‘their’! You’re not including yourself with this lot,”
she took step down the low dais and stopped, keenly aware of the Doctor’s
proximity. He was not close enough to
touch but she could feel him, his presence coursing through her like her own
life’s blood. He was not looking at her
but she could tell he was straining towards her like a plant towards
light. The knowledge was not conceit—she
was doing it herself. They were alike,
the two of them, brought together by impossible forces…
“I am not like them,” Ace replied
tightly, her voice low as she bent her neck, her gaze down on the floor. “But I am a Time Lord. The Doctor brought me here because I had no
other home. I had no other place to be… I
was suited for here…” She finally looked
at the Doctor, her eyes wide and childlike.
“I would know you anywhere. No
matter what daft old face you have…”
“Enough!” The Rani’s
voice broke the ropes of rising tension, forcing the three of them to look at
her where she stood at the head of the key that formed the floor’s
pattern. “The Doctor is on trial
here. This is not one of those insipid
stories you humans are so fond of!”
Striding forward, she shoved Ace to one side and sent her
sprawling. In the moment before the Rani
grabbed her and started to force her towards the back of the hall, Rose had a
glimpse of the expression on Ace’s face.
Anger, pure and strong, flashed across her eyes and tightened her
lips. Maybe, Rose thought, this would go
well after all…
The Doctor started after Rose but
Ace grabbed his wrist as she rose to her feet.
“No. Your part in this is
over. So is mine… you know how this
works, don’t you? You’ve been a Time
Lord longer than I have…”
He turned to face his former, and,
truth be told, one of his favorite, companions.
“I don’t think I’ve been a Time Lord for a very long time, not if this
is what we have become. This is all
lies,” he added in a much louder tone, sweeping his arm to encompass the entire
silent gallery and the newly remade hall.
“This is an aberration!”
“Who is to say,” The Master cut in,
his gaze sharp and intent on the Doctor’s face, “what is an aberration in this
Universe? Us? You? The ever amorphous but
highly popular ‘them’? No,
Doctor, we all make our own aberrations.
And you are the most… obstinate one that Gallifrey
has ever created.” He flickered
his gaze to Ace and added in a tone of sheer derision, “The Looms will not
accept just anyone. Your Rose has the
vortex in her, just as a true Time Lord would.
She controls it…” Smiling a thin,
pained smile, he turned his attentions to Ace.
“Does it hurt, knowing that he gave this to her? Is it like your lover giving a child to
another female? Some piece of him will
always be inside her, always be carried in her blood, her memory… but you… he
left you on an alien planet and went to adventure on his own. Doesn’t that hurt a little?”
“Not as much as you’d think,” Ace
replied tartly. She did not look at the
Doctor but her face reddened, giving lie to her words. “The Doctor is done here, is he not? I’ll take him to his cell.”
“No, he is NOT finished!” the
Master barked. “He still has crimes to
answer for. Rose has yet to make her
decision…” The smile became
genuine. “Bring in the other companions
and tell the Rani to position Rose where she can see and hear all. We want the
final judgment to be a fair one…”
A/N The next chapter will move
things along much more quickly…
