CHAPTER XXXV
Julian walked one pace behind Garak. He held his leash and swung it back and forth. He would have to have a talk with Garak about this when he returned. “I may need to take you for a training vacation,” Garak said, as Julian wandered around him in a circle. The human was purposefully pestering him with his wandering. “I will not run away, Master,” he whispered against Garak's ear. “You know the penalty,” Garak said, sliding a hand to Julian's hip and moving him gently to where he was supposed to walk. The human was being obstinate. “You are to stay on the Dukat's property today, unless you ask me for permission to leave. Gul Dukat is still on the planet. He is likely to check on you periodically. Palira is his only daughter. It's a natural instinct of Cardassians to be protective parents. We would never let anything hurt our children.” “Humans are much the same. We would do anything to protect our children, under normal circumstances.” “Normal circumstances?” Garak asked, jerking the leash so Julian would walk at his side. Julian put one hand on Garak's shoulder and the other on his forearm. “Well, not all parents are the same. There are those that do wrong. It may not be their intention. But parents are not perfect.” Garak did not respond as he turned them into the garden of the Dukat's home. “Julian!” Small arms wrapped around Julian's thighs. “Hello Palira.” Julian stooped and hugged her. Palira wrapped her arms around his neck, squeezing as he stood up so he would hold her. She giggled and rubbed her nose on his cheek. “Mekor is feeling really well. Daddy and Mommy are so happy. I'm happy he is well too, but I am still mad at him. He ruined my birthday. Daddy is still here...” The little girl chattered animatedly at him, telling him everything she had done since the moment her eyes opened that morning. As Palira paused to take a breath, Julian spoke, “May I go and look over Mekor? Then we can play.” Palira nodded, going silent as she looked at Garak. “Hi, Mr. Kamar,” Palira said, kissing on Julian's cheek possessively. She petted Julian's hair. Garak nodded to her. “Grandpa is waiting for you. Julian, can we play computer test games in my room?” “Maybe this afternoon. I think you should be outside this morning.” Palira nodded, “Okay, Julian.” Garak reached out and unclipped the leash. Julian turned around and held out his free hand as he tucked Palira close. Garak touched the palm softly with his hand. "I will see you this afternoon, Julian. Be good." ~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~ Julian sighed, wandering through the Dukat's house. It had been a rather long morning. The Minister of Justice had wandered by several times while he pushed the little girl on the swing. He had kept his distance as he whispered to the other Cardassians. But Julian had caught some of what they had been saying. He had filed it away to share with Garak at a later time. Palira was now snoozing on his shoulder as he carried her to her room. She was a sweetie, and so young. “I love you, Julian,” Palira mumbled as he carried her into her bedroom. She pressed closer to him, loosening her hold on a plush toy in one hand and a children's cup of water with a spill proof lid on it. “Just rest, Palira. You have had a big day.” Palira settled down quietly again, allowing herself to be placed in the bed without a fuss. Julian took her cup and placed in on the nightstand. He looked around and saw her stuffed toy had been dropped when they came into her bedroom. Palira lifted her head. “Julian, rub my back, please,” she said softly. “Stay close to me.” Julian knelt by the bed and gently rubbed the little girl's back. She made soft little happy hisses for a few minutes before as she drifted to sleep. It was the middle of the afternoon, but the little girl needed a short nap at the very least. He started to step away from her to go sit with Garak for a little while. Palira whimpered and wiggled, lifting her head. Julian moved back to her. He rubbed the small back some more. Palira stilled and was quiet, lifting her back toward the hand. Whoosh. Julian turned his head toward the door. He heard the beeping of the console out in the main part of Palira's suite of rooms. “Naprem, how is she?” a deep male voice asked. It was full of concern. Julian removed his hands from rubbing Palira's back. She was silent and motionless. He crept to the door. He pressed his ear to it. “Not well,” a woman's voice answered. She sounded as if she was holding back tears. “She is in a great deal of pain, and you know why she can not go to the doctor.” “I know,” the man answered. “I will do everything in my power to help.” “I love you, Skrain.” “I love you,” the male voice answered. The comm channel beeped, signaling the termination of the link. Julian stepped back. He stepped on something plush and fell with a loud thump to the floor. He grabbed the stuffed toy. WHOOSH! “Julian.” Gul Dukat stared at Julian in the dim light. His arm was extended and his hand clutched a phaser. Julian stared at the phaser being held in the Cardassian's hand. He moved to the side. “I may have another use for you, Doctor. Come with me.” Gul Dukat reached down and grabbed Julian by the arm. “What about Palira?” “An alarm will alert us when she wakes.” “I told her I would stay with her,” Julian said, looking back at the little girl nervously. She was his safety net. Palira would fuss if someone tried to hurt him, and then they would stop. He tilted his head as he heard a soft sound from Palira's closet. “She'll be fine while we speak for a few minutes. I will explain to her if she wakes while we are in discussion.” Dukat re-holstered his weapon. Julian looked back at her. “We will talk right here in Palira's rooms.” Dukat said, leaving the door open so his baby girl would hear the voices if she woke up. Julian shifted. Dukat went to the replicator and ordered a glass of kanar. “Would you care for anything, Doctor?” “No, thank you,” Julian said, watching the Cardassian walk back over and sit down on a chair. He looked back into Palira's room. He could see a shadow moving. “Please sit down.” Julian looked at the left corner above the window. “I am a member of the Central Command. The Obsidian Order is not allowed to have their devices activated in my home except at the request of the Central Command.” Julian shifted. He was quiet. “I am not going to hurt you.” “Why did you point a phaser at me?” he asked, moving slowly to a long white couch that faced the door to Palira's room. “I thought you were an intruder. You and Palira were supposed to be outside for a little longer.” “She is tired, and she needs a nap.” “Yes. You have taken good care of her today.” Gul Dukat shifted. The human pet had proven capable of tending to plenty of duties, and he had kept quiet. Federation doctors could not reveal information about their patients. “She is a lovely little girl. And she loves you very much.” Gul Dukat smiled at the praise of his child. He puffed up a little. Palira came from him. She was perfect in every way. “Where were you trained in Medicine?” Dukat asked, sipping some of the kanar. Hopefully Kamar had not educated him. It was unorthodox, but not unheard of. The human would be worthless if Kamar had had him taught. “Earth,” Julian answered. “I take it you are not too familiar with Cardassian physiology in that case.” Gul Dukat said. That was easily remedied. He would do everything he could to help his children. “I have a vague familiarity with the Cardassian lymphatic, nervous, muscular, digestive and skeletal systems. Other than that, I can not boast of too much internal knowledge. Cardassians do not share their medical information easily.” Julian said, remembering his first excursion into Cardassian space to get the medical knowledge he required to save Garak's life. Dukat took a larger gulp of the kanar. “Why do you ask?” he looked up at the sound of soft footsteps. He squinted into Palira's rooms. A shadowy figure stood quietly listening and watching them. A phaser was pointed at the back of Dukat's head. “I will need to speak with your master.” Dukat said, looking Julian over. “About what?” “Nothing you need to worry about.” Dukat stood and put his glass back in the replicator. It disappeared. “I will speak with your master.” Julian looked up. What was Dukat planning? He had been talking to his Bajoran mistress. “I will speak with him before you leave the house today. I have to be returning to my post in four days.” Julian looked toward the bedroom. “You can come out. He's gone.” “He is lucky he did not harm you,” Garak's voice was dark as he tugged Julian close. Julian rested his hands on Garak's neck. He slid his index fingers up to bush along Garak's chin. He would have to go and see his Garak. “If he thinks that the Obsidian Order does not know about his mistress, he is more stupid than we think he is.” Julian leaned close. “I want to help him if we can,” Julian said, stroking along the neck ridge. “He may give you some leverage over him.” Garak nodded. “I will agree if I think it is reasonable.” Garak tapped his comm-cuff and called for transport. Julian tapped the comm cuff, cutting off the transmission. “Thank you for coming,” Julian said, leaning close. “I knew you would not let him hurt me.” Garak leaned in and kissed Julian softly on his lips. He tapped his comm cuff. “Energize.” “Julian,” a soft voice called. “I'm right out here, Palira.” Julian called, walking to the doorway where the little girl stood. “Will you tell me the Pooh Bear story again?” Palira asked, holding her arms up. Julian stooped and snuggled her. “Of course.” “Can we sit in the main room? Daddy is coming to take me out at twenty-hundred hours. I need to bathe and be pretty for him.” “Of course,” Julian said, taking the little girl to the large bathroom. He began telling her about Winnie the Pooh visiting Rabbit. Palira giggled as Julian washed her hair and helped her dry off, as he talked about the funny Gopher. “And Rabbit put sign up. No FEED the BEAR!” Palira said with a giggle. Julian smiled and continued the story as he helped Palira put on her sparkly white dress and tied the light blue satin ribbon around her waist. It was nice to have a little one to tell stories to. Palira stood still, listening to the story as Julian fixed her hair. Julian wrapped his arms around her as he finished and lifted her onto the sofa next to him, continuing into the story of Tiger bouncing too high into the tree and getting stuck. Palira giggled at the story's conclusion and pressed close to Julian. “The rabbit is silly to allow the Tigger to bounce again,” a deep voice said from the hallway. “He lost his advantage, and now it will go back and pester him again and wreck his hard work.” “Daddy,” Palira said, hopping down. She turned in a circle. “I am pretty for you.” “You don't have to try to be pretty, Palira. You were born the most beautiful little girl on Cardassia.” Palira went and held her arms up to her father. “Your master will explain to you,” Dukat said, nodding to Julian. “He is waiting to take you home in the foyer. Follow me.” “You would forgive as well,” Julian said, looking at Dukat as he followed them down the hallway. “I doubt it.” “If your child did something that hurt you, you would forgive them. You love them more than anything. You would never let anything happen to them.” “The situations aren't analogous. The Rabbit despises Tigger. The Tigger continuously was destroying the Rabbit's garden from what I heard of your story. The Tigger does not deserve to be happy, unless some wish of the Rabbit is gratified.” Dukat returned. “He lost his advantage and for nothing but making the others happy. Tigger is also weak. He is too joyful and that is what makes him vulnerable. Rabbit is at least preparing and working hard.” Julian smiled. He was accustomed to such unusual interpretations. Garak looked up at them as they descended to the foyer. Julian moved around Dukat as soon as they were on the ground floor. He moved to Garak's side. Garak reached out and attached the leash. Dukat watched them, bouncing Palira in his arms. “It is agreed, then?” Dukat asked, looking at Garak. Julian kissed the top of Garak's hand and moved closer to him. “It is agreed,” Garak said. “As long as I have a private line with the Minister, so I can continue my work if it is needed.” Julian looked back and forth between them. Terrific. Something to do with him, and he knew nothing about it. They were probably going to Bajor. It sounded like it would be a working vacation. Not that it would be any fun to be on Bajor right now. ~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~
