Jack vented
a harsh breath as the TARDIS was set down with a jarring thud. The Doctors did not even seem to notice,
continuing their odd, fractured discussion around him as the low hum which had
been the tractors hauling the TARDIS fell silent and an eerie stillness
permeated the big blue box. “I don’t
suppose you could all, I don’t know… BE QUIET!” he barked, bracing himself
against the control console. “For just
ten seconds!”
“Well,” one
of the older Doctors sniffed, “I never…”
“Oh, stow
it. Yes, you have. Many
times, in fact.” It was the tall,
lanky one with a riot of curls; he shot Jack a toothy grin and held out a
crinkling plastic bag. “They’re quite
good…”
Jack
grimaced inwardly. Jelly babies. He hated the things with a burning
passion. “No, I’m good, thanks. NOW,” he raised his voice to be heard over
the growing murmurs of conversation around him.
“NOW we need to work fast. We can
open the doors from the inside, I’m fairly certain. We have tools if we need ‘em. After we get the doors open…” he paused,
taking a deep breath, not quite able to believe he was about to suggest his
plan. “When we open the doors, we fan
out. I’m only vaguely familiar with the
layout of this place and the TARDIS won’t bring up the maps for some reason.” A loud thud made all eyes shift towards the
far side of the control panel and the short, white-suited Doctor bent over
it. He thumped it again with the handle
of his umbrella, causing the TARDIS to produce an array of angry-sounding
clicks and whirrs. “HEY!”
“There she
is,” this particular Doctor smiled. “Right as rain.” He
stepped back proudly as Jack rushed around the console and pointed with the tip
of his umbrella to the screen blinking to life before them all. “The map’s back up.”
Jack took a
deep breath and let it out slowly. “As I
was saying… We fan out.” The words came out through gritted teeth as
he tried to maintain his temper. It was
not often he was so frazzled but this was quickly becoming a difficult to
control situation. More than one Doctor,
he noted as his temples began to softly throb, is not conducive to clean and
simple planning. “Divide up by age,” he
suggested a moment later, before anyone could suggest otherwise.
“Um, Jack?
We’re all the same age,” a rather bemused looking blond incarnation of the
Doctor pointed out. “We’re all the
Doctor and such…” he shrugged helplessly, offering a kind smile.
“Right,
right… Just… divide up. We’ll get the
door open and fan out. Don’t take any
more than twenty minutes to search, then report back here. If you’re seen, lie.”
“Right,”
the curly headed, longshanked
Doctor declared. “We can do this. Can’t be any harder than
dealing with Adric.” He paused and looked away for a moment. “Or any worse.”
The
cavernous storage room was not dark, by any means. The bright lights blinded Jack as they
emerged from the TARDIS, the inner doors no more banged up than when they had
started, surprisingly, given the effort it took to open the things. A single guard stood watch, her back to the
room, head bowed. “It’s a trap,” Jack
murmured. “Always is.”
“Got it.” The shorter Doctor in white put in cheerily,
rushing forward. “Excuse me, miss?” The guard turned, hands coming up to either
defend herself or attack—Jack never did find out. The Doctor swung his umbrella and clipped her
neatly in a spot near the crook of her neck, making her gasp as she crumpled to
the floor. “Glad that worked…”
“Is she
going to be okay?” Jack demanded as he pushed past the pair by the door. “Push her aside,” he added, not waiting for
an answer. “Fan out. Twenty minutes, got it?” A muted chorus of agreement met his demand
and he headed off down one fork in the hall, aware of footsteps behind
him. “Try and be more
quiet!”
“Trying,” a
voice shot back, one he had come to recognize as the lanky Doctor with a
fondness for jellied sweets. “But these
halls are not made for stealth!” He drew
even with Jack and smiled quickly down at him.
“Not too used to someone ordering me about, you know.”
Jack
smirked, turning sharply with the curve of the hall. “Try it sometime… you might like it.” The Doctor’s laugh echoed off the walls as
they rushed towards the unknown.
