While Emily’s eyes remained closed and her hands were clasped loosely on her stomach, her chest rose slowly with deep rhythmic breaths. Internally, her heart rate slowed and her core temperature lowered. The other occupants of the room watched as her face paled and the once animated features on the young woman’s face slackened. Her skin faded to a grayish blue with the lips and the skin around her eyes darkening. Her curly chestnut hair had been released from its restraints and draped across a decorative pillow behind her. The once vibrant hue of her hair dulled to a limp brown.
Grissom closed his eyes unable to watch as the life literally drained from Emily’s body. Her body resembled a corpse more than that of the vibrant young woman that had just been speaking to them a moment ago. He worried that the vibrancy would be lost forever one day, if they weren’t careful. It was the same reaction he had had when he began working for the Vegas Police. He had watched a ten-year-old Emily go through the same transformation.
Brian ignored the agents and instead listened and watched Emily breathing, waiting until it had almost stilled. He grabbed a white blanket that was on hand and covered her body. He was careful not to physically touch her and left only her head and part of her shoulders visible.
Grissom was struck by the imagery and how she resembled a corpse, ready for autopsy at the morgue. Having seen many bodies in such a condition, neatly covered by white sheets, a slight shiver of fear for Emily coursed through his body.
Looking over at Brass, he could tell that his partner was also shaken by the image as well as the memories it had stirred up.
“Emily, are you ready?” Brian asked softly.
A full minute passed before a whispered response came from Emily, “Yessss.”
He leaned forward and almost whispered in her ear, “Where is Henry Miller?”
Grissom mentally crossed his fingers, hoping the boy was still alive. Not only for Henry’s and his family’s sake, but for Emily’s. The last time he had witnessed Emily’s projections, it had almost ended in tragedy.
*****
Emily traveled away from the house, that she once resided in, and quickly traveled around Vegas aimlessly as she waited for Brian to spur her projection in the correct direction. Traveling to some of her favorite sites, in the Vegas area, occupied her time while she waited. The arcade area at the Circus Circus casino, the Big Shot on top of the Stratosphere Tower, the Fremont lights and the Las Vegas Zoo, were some of her favorite areas to visit. As well as the nearby park and swimming pools and other places only frequented by locals. She continued to wander randomly until her brother asked her the question she waited for.
“Where is Henry Miller?” reverberated through her unconscious mind. Brian’s voice drew her away from her current location and allowed her to focuse on the task at hand.
She instantly felt the pull. Before registering how she actually got there, her destination came into view.
The house resembled many on the same street, a prefabricated house in a neighborhood of identical replicas. Standing in front of the large picture window, she glanced inside.
She saw a living room decorated in neutral colors and made up of, what seemed like, second hand furniture. The color TV was mammoth sized compared to its newer, sleeker contemporary models. It sat alone against one wall, while a dull beige couch faced the television.
On the floor, in front of the couch, sat a little boy cross-legged. He was staring intently at the screen that currently showed a little Dexter dancing across it. She smiled as she heard the little boy laugh out loud at the cartoon character ‘battled’ with his older sister.
Without thinking, she kneeled down next to the boy who didn’t notice her presence. She watched the antics on the TV for a moment, but soon drew her gaze back to the boy beside her.
“Hello, Henry.”
*****
“Hello, Henry.” whispered the woman lying on the sofa, never opening her eyes nor acknowledging the others in the room.
Grissom sighed with relief, with Brass doing much the same next to him. The boy was alive.
They watched and listened as the one-sided conversation continued.
*****
The little boy turned toward her and didn’t seem disturbed by the sudden appearance of the woman.
“Hi,” he said calmly.
She smiled, “There are a lot of people looking for you.”
A light entered the boy’s eyes, he excitedly said, “Mommy?”
“Yes, she’s very worried about you.”
“Are you going to take me to her?” he asked.
She shook her head slightly, “No, but I’m going to let some of my friends know where you are so that they can come here and take you home.”
He looked worriedly behind him and then looked back at Emily, “But daddy said that I can’t see Mommy.” Tears began to well up in the boy’s eyes.
“Daddy? Was it your daddy that took you away from home, Henry?” she questioned.
The boy nodded, “Nanny too.”
Emily frowned, this was the first time she had heard of a nanny. She vocalized her confusion, “Nanny?”
*****
Brass’s face was set in disgust. So Mr. Acker and Ms. Martinez had taken the child. While there was something about Mr. Acker that had bothered him, he had no evidence to further suspect him. However, he never suspected Ms. Martinez, who continued to show great concern over the missing boy. He couldn’t wait to get those two into an interrogation room. He continued to listen, waiting for Emily to reveal their location.
*****
“Henry, can you tell me where you are?” she asked.
“I’m at nanny’s friend’s house,” he stated.
The information didn’t help but she didn’t want to bother the little boy further, nor alert the other inhabitants in the house to the conversation. While they would only hear the boy’s side of the conversation, she had seen others get spooked and move the child.
“Henry, I’m leaving now but don’t worry, my friends will be by soon. Don’t get scared when they get here okay?” she explained.
The boy nodded and turned back to the TV.
Emily moved toward the hallway of the house.
She walked toward the front door and a little side table that sat next to it. She smiled victoriously when she spotted some mail sitting on top.
Bending down to read the address through the little plastic window, she said, “The address on the envelope is 3645 West Acadia Drive. It’s addressed to a Louise Sanchez, I’m assuming that that is the nanny’s friend.”
*****
Brass silently rose and walked to the back of the house, to make the call on his cell phone.
Grissom stayed with Emily and Brian.
“Okay, Emily. It’s time to come home,” Brian said, leaning down once again to whisper to his motionless sister.
*****
“Okay, Emily. It’s time to come home,” She heard. With one last look at the little boy to assure herself that he was safe, she allowed her consciousness to be pulled back to her body.
*****
Several minutes passed after Brian had made the gentle request. He and Grissom sat tense on their chairs waiting for the body, before them, to return to some semblance of life.
Finally, Emily drew in a deep breath. Continuing to take deep breathes; her hair and skin slowly regained its former color. Her pulse quickened and her temperature rose, counteracting the short time that she laid ‘dead’. Grissom once again sighed in relief; this time for the woman that continued to keep her eyes closed but at least was breathing evenly and strongly.
Brass walked back toward the living room and motioned to Grissom. Grissom quietly stood up and went to the hallway where Brass was waiting.
“I’ve called several units to the address as well as putting an APB out on Ackers, Martinez and Louise Sanchez. I told the units to wait for my arrival before approaching the house. We should probably leave right now,” Brass stated quietly.
“No, I’ll stay with them until I’m sure Emily’s okay. You go and just have a unit pick me up in a couple of hours,” Grissom whispered.
Brass nodded, “Tell Emily thanks and that this time, I won’t let fifteen years go by before seeing her again.”
Grissom smiled and watched Brass leave before returning to the living room.
Brian sat in the chair that Brass had previously occupied and intently watched Emily for any signs of distress. A cordless phone rested on Brian’s lap just in case of an emergency.
“She’ll be like this for a couple of hours. You don’t have to wait,” Brian said, never taking his eyes off Emily.
Grissom sat next to him, “I’ll wait.”
Brian drew his gaze away from the unconscious woman to study the man next to him. Seeing the look in his eyes, Brian nodded and returned his gaze. The two men sat and watched the young woman that lay before them, unaware of their attention.
