CHAPTER 4 : IN PURSUIT

Vaughn and Sydney quickly boarded a plane- this time bound for Lisbon. Sydney
closed
her eyes, but Vaughn could not rest. Here we go again, he thought. In pursuit
of more
things Rambaldi. He glanced over at Sydney's beautiful resting form, and
sighed. He
hoped this would not be too hard on her. He hated to see anything cause her
pain, and
Rambaldi typically ended up doing just that. Sydney stirred, and opened her
eyes to see
Vaughn staring at her.

"What's wrong, Vaughn?" she said, sitting up, her expression showing her
concern.

"Nothing, Sydney, I was just thinking...," his voice trailed off as he gently
took her hand in
his and smiled. After looking into each other's eyes a moment, Vaughn turned
and
opened up his mission briefing to review his notes. "The tracking device we
placed on
Mallory Crawford should lead us to wherever she's headed. That should make us
able to
grab the artifact, but we'll have to be careful and at least try to maintain the
cover we've
established, incase we have to go back in under our aliases."

"So we'll have to try and slip in unseen," Sydney said, nodding in agreement.
"We can do
this. As a team," she said, looking at Vaughn. She knew his concerns, but she
also knew
she'd be fine. She could do this. She could handle anything, as long as he was
by her side
through it. The pilot came over the intercom, indicating that they were about
to land in
Lisbon. Sydney sighed and closed her file. "Here we go," she said.

The plane landed and Sydney and Vaughn headed over to a van that was waiting for
them.
Vaughn drove as Sydney hooked up the coms in the back of the van, and tracked
Mallory's
signal. "Two miles north!" she called to Vaughn, who quickly changed direction.
"Three
miles east- she's stopped!" she called. Vaughn turned the van and quickly
headed in the
direction that Sydney indicated. Soon they had arrived, quietly pulling behind
the
warehouse so they did not attract attention. They were both dressed all in
black now, and
covered their faces with black ski masks.

"Are you sure you can do this?" Vaughn said to her, his eyes filled with
concern. "I mean,
who knows what we might find in there."

"I know, Vaughn but I can handle it," she said, reassuring him. She thought it
was so
sweet that Vaughn was concerned with her, but she had learned a long time ago
that
Rambaldi was destined to be a part of her life, and the more she fought it, the
harder it
would be on her. She still didn't believe the prophecies, but she saw no point
in running
away from something she couldn't control.

They snuck in the back of the warehouse, and saw Mallory talking to another man.
Vaugh
didn't recognize him, but Sydney thought he looked vaguely familiar. They
crouched
down, and listened carefully.

"Good job, Jason," said Mallory, smiling. "I'll go back and tell them that he
was moved,
and keep them wondering what the artifact is. The longer we can put them off,
the longer
we have to figure out what is so special about him."

Jason nodded. "You are absolutely right," he said, pulling Mallory into his
arms. "Then
we'll hold the key to Rambaldi's legacy." Mallory laughed, then pulled away
from Jason. "I
have to go back and give them a report. Then I have one more job to do, which
should be
quick. I'll meet you in Vienna when I'm done, so we can find out just who he
is." Mallory
kissed the man she called Jason, then quickly made her exit.

Sydney whispered to Vaughn, "Oh my God, Vaughn that's Jason Turo. He used to
work
with me at SD-6," she said in shock and disbelief. As soon as Mallory left, she
turned to
Vaughn. "We need to get him into custody, to find out what he knows." Vaughn
nodded,
and they split up, Sydney taking Jason from the front, and Vaughn from behind.

"Freeze!" called Sydney, cocking her gun and pointing it directly at Jason.

"I know that voice," said Jason, smiling and getting closer to Sydney. "Sydney
Br-" he
began, but was cut off as Vaughn hit him from behind, knocking him to the
ground, and
kicked him in the ribs.

"Where is the artifact?" he screamed, looking down at Jason, who began laughing
at him.

"The artifact?" Jason said with a smile. "You don't have to first clue what
you're looking
for, you moron!" Vaughn punched him right in the jaw, causing Jason to fall
backward
again and grunt from the force of the blow.

"Come one, Jason," said Sydney, getting closer to him. "For the last time,
where is it?"

"It?" said Jason, laughing. "You have no idea what you're talking about," he
said, his head
beginning to spin. Just before he lost consciousness, he managed to say,
"You're not
looking for it- you're looking for HIM."
