Love Betrayed
Chapter 4
Doug was furious, how dare that man hypnotize Bo? Did he really think that he would be okay with raping Bo? Well he might not really be able to bring him up on charges, not without bringing Bo into it and he wasn't going to do that. He would however find a way to make him pay for what he'd done, he'd just have to give it some thought. In the meantime, he would be filing his final report with the state, recommending against the housing development.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Luke had just come out of the Boar's Nest when he saw Doug Lewis coming around the corner from Boss' office. *Great I spend three days trying to forget what happened and I have to run into him.*
"Mr. Duke, I'm glad I ran into you," Doug said, coming up to him.
"I got nothing to say to you," Luke snarled, trying to move past him.
"I don't blame you for being angry, but I promise you I had no part in what was done to Bo."
Turns on him, glaring angrily, "What do you mean, what was done to Bo?" he asked in a dangerous voice.
"He didn't tell you?"
"Tell me what?" he asked, wondering why he even cared.
"Perhaps we could go somewhere else to discuss it," Doug suggested.
"What's wrong with right here?'
"Look I don't know you that well, but I got the impression you care about your cousin," Doug snapped. "Now if I was wrong, I'm sorry, I won't however cause him a problem that could be avoided by going somewhere private to talk. So, are you going to come along or not?"
"You expect me to go somewhere with you?"
"Fine...follow me then," Doug growled. Going to his car, he got in and left, relieved to see the orange car behind him. He didn't go far before he saw a small clearing just off the road. Pulling over, he got out of his car and waited for Luke to join him.
"Alright I'm here, now what do ya want?" Luke demanded.
"I haven't seen Bo in a few days, I'm not sure he'd want to see me to be honest. I have to go back to Atlanta today, but before I do I wanted Bo to know that I'm sorry for what happened and that Hogg will pay for it."
"What do you mean what happened?" narrowing his eyes at the other man.
"If Bo didn't tell you maybe I shouldn't..."
Grabbing the other man by his shirt, Luke pulled him off the car, "Talk," he ordered.
"Hogg wanted me to lie on my report, when I wouldn't he tried to bribe me," wisely obeying. " I turned him down, but then Bo walked by the window and Hogg noticed the way I was looking at him. He led me to believe they were friends and he could arrange for a meeting."
"Bo and Boss Hogg friends? That'd be the day," Luke scoffed.
"Yes I know that now, but I didn't then," Doug explains.
"Go on."
"I met Bo at a cabin owned by Hogg, at first everything was going fine. Bo seemed very interested in getting to know me and then I said something that broke the spell, literally."
"Huh?"
"Turns out Bo wasn't there willingly, he'd been hypnotized. It would've worked too, except I accidentally said the phrase that broke the trance. As soon as I realized what had been done and that Bo had no desire to be there I backed off. Contrary to what Hogg apparently thought, I'm not a rapist and that's what it would've been."
Luke paled as Doug told his story, realizing what he had done to his lover. With a calmness he didn't feel, he backed away from the other man. "You said that Hogg was gonna pay, how?"
"The reason I knew that Bo had been hypnotized is because of college. You see I paid for part of my schooling by working in a dinner theater on the weekends. I put on a magic act, which included hypnosis, so when I broke that trance I realized pretty quickly what had happened. I considered bringing Hogg up on bribery charges, but I can't do that without bringing Bo into it, which I don't want to do. So instead I decided to give him a taste of his own medicine. I hypnotized him," he continued at Luke's questioning look. "For the next thirty days, everytime somebody calls him Boss, he'll hand that person a hundred dollars. If the person is on the phone, he'll hand the money to the nearest person. The best part is, at the end of the thirty days, he'll remember all the money he gave away, but he can't try to get it back, if he does he'll get a migraine headache. I don't think it'll take more than a couple of those to convince him to give it up."
"That could cost him thousands of dollars," Luke said.
"Yes it could, seemed like the most fitting way to punish him, something that'll really hurt him. Of course his housing development won't be happening either, I've already filed my report recommending against it. I really do have to be on my way, would you let Bo know?"
"Yeah, I'll tell him," Luke quietly replied, wondering if Bo would let him close enough to tell him. Feeling sick, he stood next to the General too shaken to climb inside yet. *Oh Bo...how am I ever going to make this up to you? Can I make it up to you?*
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jesse and Daisy arrived back at the farm three days after Luke had left. "Wonder where the boys are?" Jesse said as he climbed out of the jeep. Heading to the barn, he went to check on the animals. He trusted the boys, but couldn't help the need to make sure all was well as soon as he got home.
"I'm sure they'll be here soon Uncle Jesse," Daisy replied. Grabbing her bag from the back of the jeep, she headed inside. She was surprised by how dark the house was as she walked to her room, not noticing the figure curled up on the couch. Quickly putting her few things away, she came back out, finally realizing why it was so dark. "That's strange I wonder why the boys have the blinds drawn?" Moving to the window, she raised the shades. "Bo? Honey what's wrong?" she asked concerned. Stepping closer, she couldn't believe that this was her out-going, normally happy cousin. Sitting down on the edge of the couch, she reached out to touch him, shocked when he flinched away from her. "I'll be right back sugar," she softly said. Hurrying outside, she ran to the barn, "Uncle Jesse?"
"What is it Daisy?" he asked, coming out of the large structure.
"Something's wrong with Bo."
"Is he sick? Where is he?" Jesse asked, already moving towards the house.
"He's on the couch. Uncle Jesse wait," she called out before he could go inside. "I don't know what's going on, but he had the shades drawn and was sitting in the dark. He looks like he hasn't slept or eaten in days and...he flinched when I tried to touch his arm."
"Alright," he acknowledged before going into the house. "Bo?" he called, pulling a chair over and sitting next to the couch.
Bo lay on the couch, more miserable than he'd been in a long time. He didn't blame Luke for being angry with him, but he never thought his cousin would do that to him. Bo knew he deserved punishment, but why did it have to be...without his awareness the tears started flowing again.
"Bo son...please tell me what's wrong? Did something happen to Luke?" he fearfully asked, unable to think of any other reason for Bo's present state.
"Luke? Is he here? Did he come back?" he asked, sitting up and looking around the room.
"Luke left?" Jesse quietly asked.
"Uncle Jesse? When did you get here?"
"That's not important," he softly replied. "Bo son, I want you to look at me," he instructed.
Instinctively Bo did as his uncle said, as he focused on the older man he made himself listen to what Jesse was saying.
"That's good, now I need to know what happened Bo? Why did Luke leave? When did he leave?"
"It's my fault," Bo reluctantly admitted.
"How is it your fault?" Jesse asked, trying to stay patient with the obviously devasted boy.
"I was...he saw me with another man," Bo had to look away as he answered, too ashamed to face his uncle.
"Oh Bo...how could you do that to Luke?" Daisy asked from the doorway.
"I didn't mean to Daisy, they hypnotized me...I didn't know I was..."
"Hypnotized? Who did that Bo?" Jesse demanded.
"It was Boss...he wanted something from this man and..."
"The man wanted you," Jesse finished. "So J.D. had you hypnotized so you'd be with this other man, is that what you're telling me?" Jesse yelled.
"Yes sir," Bo replied, flinching at the raised voice. "Nothing happened though...somehow I came out of it and when he realized what had happened he sent me home. Luke must've followed me up there and seen us together. He left when I came home, he doesn't want to be with me anymore."
"Even after you told him about...you didn't tell him," Daisy realized.
"He didn't give me the chance," Bo explained, slumping back down on the couch.
"Don't you worry sprout, we'll get this straightened out, but first you're going to eat something."
"Not hungry."
"I'm sure you're not, but you're going to eat a little soup anyway. Daisy would you heat him up a little soup?" Turning back to Bo, he couldn't help being concerned by his appearance. "Bo, when was the last time you ate?"
"I don't know...think I had a piece of toast this morning."
"What about sleep? Have you been sleeping any at all?"
"A little...I'm okay Uncle Jesse," he assured.
"No you're not, but you will be. How long has this been going on Bo?"
"Few days," came the quiet reply.
"Okay, well as soon as you have a bite to eat I want you to get some rest."
"Got chores to do," Bo protested.
"I'll take care of that, you've done fine but you let me take care of it now. Come on, I'll help ya to your room, I think this once you can eat in bed," Jesse said, reaching for his arm.
"No," Bo refused, pulling away from his uncle.
"Bo you need some sleep," he tried to reason with him.
"I'll sleep...just not in there, please Uncle Jesse," he plead.
"Alright," Jesse reluctantly agreed. "I'll get you a pillow and blanket." Stepping into the kitchen, he went to Daisy's side and spoke quietly. "When the soup's heated, I want you to add a little shine to it, just to help him sleep."
"Okay...Uncle Jesse? Do you think Bo's going to be alright?"
"He'll be fine, we'll make sure of it," he assured her. Hurrying to the bedroom the boy's shared, he froze in his tracks when he saw the bed. "Dear lord, what happened here?" he whispered. Taking a pillow from the bed, he grabbed an extra blanket from the closet and went back to the living room. "Here ya are Bo," he quietly said, laying the pillow on the couch and draping the blanket across the back of it. "Daisy that soup ready?"
"Here it is Uncle Jesse," handing him the bowl, she stepped back.
Slowly, despite Bo's protests, Jesse fed him the small bowl of soup. When the last drop was gone, he told his nephew to lay down and lovingly covered him with the blanket. "Bo...did Luke hurt you?" he softly asked as he brushed the boy's hair from his face.
"It don't matter none," Bo replied, his voice subdued.
"Why doesn't it matter?"
"Cause I deserved to be...punished."
"Because you were with another man? Bo that wasn't your fault, you were hypnotized remember?"
"Shouldn't have let them hypnotize me...if I'd been stronger it wouldn't have happened."
"So you think you deserve whatever your cousin did because you couldn't keep from being hypnotized?"
"Yeah," came the quiet answer.
"What did he do Bo?"
"Don't matter, I'm okay."
"Son I don't know what he did, but if it was bad enough to make ya bleed you should be seen by a doctor at least."
"No! Sorry, didn't mean to yell. I don't need a doctor Uncle Jesse, I'm fine, I swear."
"Alright, but if ya don't start getting better soon I'm calling Dr. Appleby." Jesse knew that a lot of the trouble was depression, but he was hoping to give the boy a reason to fight against it.
"Yes sir," Bo acknowledged.
"You get some sleep now," Jesse softly ordered, tucking the blanket around him. After a few minutes, exhaustion and shine won out against stubborness, and Bo drifted to sleep. Quietly moving away from the couch, Jesse went outside.
"Uncle Jesse?" Daisy called as she came out of the house a moment later.
"What is it baby?"
"What were you talking about in there? Is Bo hurt?"
"I don't know Dasiy, I found blood in the bedroom."
"Blood!"
"Calm down, it wasn't much, but with the way Bo's acting it still worries me. I just hope that I'm making the right decision by not calling the doctor."
"Where do you suppose Luke is?"
"There's no telling, probably at one of the still sites. I'll go look for him later, right now I'm not sure what I'd do if I found him."
"I can't believe he could leave Bo like that, he could've listened to him at least. What are we gonna do Uncle Jesse?" she asked, worried for both her cousins.
"We're going to take care of Bo, get him out of this state he's in for starters. I'll go find Luke once I've calmed down some, hopefully I can get him to listen to me. Then I'm going to see J.D. Hogg and beat some of that suet out of him!"
"Can I help?"
Jesse couldn't help chuckling at that request. "You let me handle J.D., right now though I think I'm going out to the barn, see if I can calm down a little."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Luke pulled into the driveway at the farm, sighing heavily when he saw Daisy's jeep parked next to the pick-up. Parking the General, he pulled himself out of the car and started towards the house.
"Hold it right there," Jesse bellowed from behind him.
"Hey Uncle Jesse, when did you get back?" he asked, trying to sound normal.
"A few hours ago, you can imagine my surprise when I found your cousin."
"Found...what do you mean? He's alright isn't he?" Luke anxiously asked, turning back to the house.
"No he's not...we need to talk son," Jesse calmly said. Motioning to the picnic table, he sat down and waited for Luke to join him.
Torn between wanting to check on Bo and obeying his uncle, he finally decided to hear the older man out. "Tell me about Bo...please," he added as an afterthought.
"We came home to find him curled up on the couch with the shades drawn. He looks like he hasn't slept or eaten in days, though he did manage to keep up with the chores. Of course if we hadn't come home when we did, I don't know how much longer he would've been able to. He told us you left and why, now I want to know why you didn't give him a chance to explain?"
"I was mad Uncle Jesse and hurt, I followed him to Boss' cabin, saw him with that Doug Lewis and I saw red. I ain't excusing what I done, I had no right to hurt Bo like that, even if he had cheated on me, just explaining what happened."
"How exactly did you hurt him?"
"By leaving and not giving him a chance to explain," Luke replied. Filled with shame, he couldn't bring himself to say what else he had done to Bo.
"What about the blood in the bedroom?"
"Blood?" Luke squeaked out, his face losing all color, he hadn't known he'd hurt him that badly. *You knew, you just didn't care.* he silently accused himself.
"What did you do to him?" Jesse demanded.
"I...oh lord, I have to see him," he cried out, jumping to his feet.
Moving faster than he had in years, Jesse got between his nephew and the house. "No, not until I know why you came back? I'm not letting you hurt him again," he growled out.
"I came back to apologize, to see if I can make things right between us."
"Why?"
"Because I know the truth now," came the soft answer.
"The truth?"
"I ran into Doug Lewis, he told me that Bo was hypnotized into being with him."
"Bo told me about that, he also told me that J.D. was behind it."
"I should've given him the chance to tell me the other day, if I had none of this would've happened. He tried to tell me, but I was so sure he was going to tell me it was over that I wouldn't let him talk," he sadly admitted.
"So now that you know the truth you're ready to listen?"
"Yes sir, if Bo's willing to talk to me. I wouldn't blame him a bit if he never wanted to speak to me again."
"You can go in, but I don't want you to disturb him, he needs some sleep."
"I won't...Uncle Jesse I'm sorry," Luke quietly said.
"I'm not the one you need to apologize to," Jesse pointed out. Stepping aside, he let Luke go into the house.
Daisy was in the living room when Luke came inside, looking up at the sound of footsteps she was surprised to see her older cousin standing there. Jumping up, she blocked his path to Bo, "What are you doing here Luke? Come back to finish him off?" she angrily hissed.
Looking down at the floor, he swallowed back the angry retort, knowing that he deserved her words. "I came to apologize, to see if I can make things right between us," he softly replied.
"Why? Why now, when you wouldn't listen to him before?" she whispered.
"I know the truth Daisy, I ran into the man I saw him with, he told me everything. I ain't gonna hurt him again, I promise," he whispered.
Raising his head with her fingers, she looked into his eyes, seeing the regret and sadness there, she finally stepped aside. "Don't wake him up, he needs to sleep," she warned before leaving the room.
Swallowing hard, he moved over to the couch, gasping at the state his lover was in. Kneeling down on the floor, he laid his head on the couch, silently praying that his cousin would forgive him.
