Jason sat in the fourth floor waiting area lost in thought. It had been hours since they had moved Elizabeth upstairs and he hadn’t heard any new information since Robin came to talk to him.
“Mr. Morgan?” Audrey said, shaking Jason from his worried reverie.
“Hello, Mrs. Hardy. Have you been in to see Elizabeth yet?” he asked.
His true concern for her granddaughter touched Audrey. Although she didn’t condone Elizabeth’s continued association with a known criminal, she had to admit that the young man was charming and well mannered and seemed to sincerely care a great deal for Elizabeth. His eyes were full of hope as he waited for her response.
“She hasn’t regained consciousness yet and that has everyone concerned. Patrick Drake has been called in for a neural consult, just to be on the safe side. She can’t have a CT scan while she is pregnant, so we are weighing the option of doing an emergency Caesarian Section if she doesn’t wake up soon,” Audrey told him as gently as she could.
Jason sighed heavily. The words he had just heard were like arrows that pierced his heart. He couldn’t imagine his life without Elizabeth in it in some way, no matter how much or how little. He just liked knowing she was there. Someone he could rely on. Someone he could talk to. If he was honest, Elizabeth was the only person in the world that he could completely relax with. It was as though, when they were alone together, he could exhale. He’d never really analyzed that aspect of their relationship before, but that was precisely how it felt to him. Like letting go of a deep breath that you hadn’t even known you were holding. Letting go of Sonny and Carly and Sam and the business and all of the garbage that made up his life. With Elizabeth, it all just went away.
Now he was faced with the fact that he might lose her and the thought terrified him.
“Do you think it would be alright if I went in to see her?” he asked Audrey, not really expecting her to say yes.
“I think she would like that. Be sure you talk to her, Mr. Morgan. Science is becoming more convinced that unconscious people hear more than we ever realized. She’s in room 402. Maybe you can get her to wake up,” Audrey said with a soft smile.
“Thank you Mrs. Hardy,” Jason said as he stood up. He gave her a rare, if faint smile before he walked off down the corridor toward Elizabeth’s room.

Lucky answered his cell on the second ring, hoping it would be Elizabeth. It wasn’t.
“She’s where? What happened? Ok. Room 402? I’ll be right there. Thank you for calling me.”
Hanging up the phone he raced out of the squad room without telling anyone where he was headed.
**************
“Ric Lansing,” the lawyer said into his cell phone.
“Room 402? I’m on my way. Thank you for the call.”
**************
Maxie Jones hung up the courtesy phone at the nurses desk on the seventh floor. Jason in Elizabeth’s room, Lucky and Ric both en route to the hospital to check on their precious Elizabeth. This should be interesting.
**************
Jason sat staring into Elizabeth’s face. She looked so peaceful it was hard for him to believe that there was anything wrong with her at all. The heart monitor beeped at regular intervals and he found the sound comforting. It meant that, at least for the moment, she was not in any distress.
Reaching out, he tenderly took her hand in his, being careful not to disturb the pulse-ox monitor on her index finger.
“Elizabeth? Can you hear me?” he asked then paused to see if, by some miracle she would respond. She didn’t.
“I know you’re in there so I’m just going to tell you that you need to wake up. Your baby is not ready to be born yet and if you don’t wake up, they’re going to have to operate on you,” he said, trying keep his voice calm and conversational.
She didn’t stir and it broke Jason’s heart. His eyes were bloodshot and filled with fear and pain. He didn’t think that he could bear the pain of losing Elizabeth too. There was too much he needed to tell her. The agony of not being able to tell Alan that he understood the love the man felt for his son would haunt Jason for the rest of his life. He didn’t want to miss another opportunity to let someone know how much they meant to him.
Leaning toward the bed, Jason brought his lips to the knuckles of Elizabeth’s hand and pressed a gentle kiss there then rested his cheek against it while he continued to watch her sleep.
