*Twisted Fate: Crying Wolf*
… It’s just getting worse and she
doesn’t know why she’s just letting it happen. What’s wrong with her? Why can’t
she stand up for herself?
Verity had been so confused when
the wounds were gone. She wouldn’t believe it when Elizabeth told her that it
was just a test, she wouldn’t leave it alone and eventually Elizabeth had
cracked. Did Verity think she was an idiot? She didn’t want Toby to see that!
She could handle it on her own!
And now she was running late to
class. Great.
“Miss Hawke,” the teacher (Mr
Woods) exclaims as she enters the classroom, her chemistry lesson already have
begun, “how nice of you to join us.”
Trying to catch her breath as the
pain continues to thrum through her bones, Elizabeth responds, “I’m sorry, Sir,
I got caught up in the library and didn’t realise the time.” She waits a moment
as Mr Woods nods, breathing a sigh of relief.
Last week she’d been given her
first detention ever for being tardy- her father had gone ballistic and the
healing cream wasn’t working as well as it used to.
She moves to take her seat before
noticing that everyone is sitting in different places today. Elizabeth glances
back at her teacher, blue eyes glittering faintly in the fluorescent lighting
of the room as she silently asks what’s going on.
“Miss Hawke, we will be working
in partners for this assignment. You’ve been assigned to work with Mr Johnson.”
Elizabeth hesitates a moment as she catches Toby’s eyes. They’ll be partners
for this and he doesn’t look all that happy with the situation. “Is there a
problem?” Mr Woods asks.
Taking her seat, Elizabeth smiles
back at the teacher, “No, Sir.”
The lesson continues on and they
find out that they will be learning about chemical reactions to the body in
relation to heal and disease. For example, medical treatment of haemophilia.
It’s in that split second that
Elizabeth knows what they should study. Healing properties of chemicals on
wounds- what could possibly assist in the healing rate?
Of course, this is a bit of a
cheat since she created the cream, but it’s not like Mr Woods would know that.
And if Elizabeth is smart about it, then Toby will just think she’s doing a lot
more work on this assignment then he is.
She sighs, she’s so tired.
The last few months have been
pure hell with Verity calling Toby in twice more in an attempt to catch
Elizabeth out. Toby just thought Elizabeth was crying wolf.
It seemed as if the situation
wasn’t going to change anytime soon and Elizabeth was starting to wonder if
maybe she should say something. With the healing balm slowly loosing its
effectiveness (just like any drug used too often), Elizabeth was in more pain
for longer periods.
Her father’s beatings were
increasing in force and the time between them was decreasing. Now she was
loosing the ability to heal herself quickly and she only had so much dark
clothing.
She was going to have to buy some
more soon. Blood would show through anything else.
When did life become so
complicated?
Before she was just entertaining
world domination thoughts and chasing after Toby, trying to get him to notice
her. Now she was hiding blood stains and trying to heal herself, planning her
escape.
“Elizabeth?” Toby asks, snapping
her from her thoughts.
Brown eyes, liquid with concern,
stare into her and she smiles slightly, flicking some of her long, blonde hair
back over her shoulder. “Yes, Toby?”
With a roll of his eyes, Toby
shrugs towards the board, “we need to pick an assignment.” He gives her a cool
look as she grins, her eyes glittering with mischief, “anything you want to
do?”
“Chemicals affect on the rate of
healing,” Elizabeth responds quickly.
A moment passes in silence as
Toby thinks over the proposition; he’ll probably hyperfunction later in an
attempt to figure some of it out. Maybe he’ll come up with a better formula for
a healing balm then she has!
The class moves off to the
library to begin their research…
