Dry Run
On return, Kari is hooked up in the harness, laughing and turning midair somersaults.)
Jamie: I don’t think we should power up the tower completely.
Grant: Right, we’ll use it with attachments disabled in the testing phase.
Adam (Standing next to the tower, looking at the attachments): None of these look anything like mine. Maybe that one.
(Scene change. Kari is moving more carefully. The tower attachment moves along with her, but with a little lag)
Kari: It’s slower than me. It doesn’t keep up.
Grant: Yeah, I don’t think there’s any way to get it to move as fast as you can.
Adam (Rubbing his bump from the baseball bat): Trust me, that’s a good thing.
Jamie: Probably during the real run you’ll move just in short repetitive fashion, so I don’t think that should be a problem.
Torry (To Adam): Man, that’s romantic.
(Scene change. Kari is still in the rig, but now the tower is raising and the attachments move in and out)
Kari (Shrieks): Oh man, it looks like it’s coming to get me!
Adam: ARR!!
(Kari watches how the tower reacts to her movements. She makes one of the vibrators extend far enough to bump her on the butt.)
Kari: I think that’ll work!
(Scene change. The group is all gathered around the machine)
Adam: So Kari, are you ready to try it out?
Kari: Sure, but I think the myth might be busted already. I mean, basically the controls are still just a big remote, right? That means that it’s not actually independent.
Grant: That’s true. Maybe if we had a supercomputer this thing could think for itself, but we’re restricted in the amount of independence we can give it.
Jamie: Right, but we know that it’s really the lack of calculating power that’s holding us back. I think that we can assume that if we had that available, the rig would act kind of along the same lines as if you were using out remote.
Adam: Yeah, and hopefully the sensors will react more to your unconscious movements than your conscious ones. I mean, when I wasn’t thinking about it, I could stop Jamie’s bat wheel from hitting me, but when I didn’t flinch, it popped me in the face.
Torry: Wasn’t the bat wheel what Batman drove?
(Scene change. Kari is getting undressed. The guys are in another room, watching her on the monitor.)
Grant: I have to go to the bathroom (He leaves).
(Commercial break.
