"Come!" Picard barked grumpily. Oh, how he despised-
"Captain!" Yar announced as she entered the door. "I've made my decision. I'm getting the abortion! I can stay on as your Security Chief!"
"That's wonderful," Picard replied. His hand rested on the keyboard. With a move of his finger, he deleted a paragraph from Worf's fitness report. It had been about how the Klingon's career had been held back by an overbearing superior, who'd luckily allowed him to rise to his full potential.
Now he'd have to find something else to base his inflated grades on. Other than mentioning the privately uttered threat, of course.
"Thought you should know!" Yar said, spinning around and walking back out.
Picard turned back to the screen. "Ever since Mr. Worf has come aboard...Uh. No, replace that with, 'Once I saw the manly thews on the statuesque Klingon... Oh, good God, no. Delete that. Hmm."
---------------
Crusher looked up as Tasha entered her office once more. Troi was in the visitor chair. She looked up, too, smiling wide as she gazed on the young officer.
"I've made a decision," Tasha said. "I'm going to do the best I can for my fetus!"
"That's wonderful!" Crusher said. Deanna's smile showed even more teeth.
"Yep," Yar said. "I want to abort it."
"WHAT?" Troi screeched. "But you're so HAPPY!"
"Of course," Yar said. "My fetus and I have specific needs and wants. I want my career and it doesn't want to interfere!"
Crusher stood as Troi spluttered and babbled about feeling good and feeling happy while planning to take an itty bitty humanoid life. "How can you know that? How can you know what it wants?"
Tasha opened her mouth, then paused. Troi's trap snapped shut like someone had told her a time traveler had destroyed all chocolate in history. She stared at Yar's belly.
"Anyone hear that?" Tasha asked.
"A suicidal fetus?" Troi muttered. "No." Her voice rose. "No, no, NO, NO, NO!" She ran screaming into the corridor, knocking Worf out of her way as she passed. He held a scanner in one hand and a photon grenade in the other. He looked hopefully at the Doctor, but she shook her head slightly as the doors started to shut.
"Okay, Lieutenant," she said. "I want to make sure you understand what's involved."
"A burst of targeted sound turns the blastocyst into a sort of jelly that falls apart and releases all energy within?" Yar said/asked. She turned and led the way to surgery and one of the exam tables.
"Um...Okay, yeah, physically. But you're going to wonder about..."
"About any noncorporeal individual that might reside inside the biochemical matrix of strangely imprisoning cells that is attached to my uterine wall?" She stripped off her uniform and lay down.
"Yeah, that's a very...Data way of putting it," Crusher agreed. "Essentially true, but horrifyingly clinical."
"Not my words, Doc," Yar said, patting her belly.
Crusher shook her head. "Okay, let the log show, one abortion on demand was demanded." She took a particular sonic scalpel from a drawer and laid it against Tasha's stomach. "No medical threat to mother or baby is noted, nor is any reported form of coercion in evidence. The-"
"Can we get on with it, Doctor?" Yar asked. "The rescue ship's been waiting."
Must be something the bridge forgot to tell the other departments about, Crusher thought to herself as she adjusted the scalpel.
They were always in the know, not sharing any information with other departments. Well, they'd tell Engineering when they needed 125% of available power. Damn the safeties and damn basic math.
They'd tell Medical that there was someone hurt, ten minutes after it became clear that someone was going to be hurt. She could have been on the scene before the body fell, but nooooooo, she had to run for the turbo lift like an EMT in a building full of spastics on roller skates.
Ooooh, she despised them so. She'd like to take-
The hand unit beeped. Yar looked up at the readout displayed above her head. "Is that it?" she asked.
"Um..." Before Crusher could verify the reading, there was a small light shining from the patient's belly button.
It rose slowly, then shot off into the edge of the room and disappeared.
For years, Crusher was very worried that she thought she'd heard someone shouting 'wheeeeee!' as the light passed her.
But she assured herself that the unshriven, unmissed, unwanted soul of Tasha's unique baby could not have been as gleeful as it had sounded.
And for as long as Lieutenant Yar lived, she'd suffer some icy cold speculums during her physicals, the Doctor decided.
