Of all the places that Sam and Dean went to, Sam did kind of liked the small towns better. They were quite, not so many people to interview. Also, if for nothing else, the greasy spoons they went to had a slightly higher quality of food than the garbage that most places served.
While waiting for Dean to show up at the dinner they had chosen for their rendezvous point, Sam decided to get some lunch to past the time; a little miffed at since Dean had talked on the phone like Sam was the one wasting time.
"What is this, a goddamn tea party?" Sam's head popped up from finishing his burger as Dean came closer to the booth.
"We didn't get breakfast remember, so don't be an ass. How'd it go?" Dean grumbled as he flopped down in the other side of the dinner booth.
"Nothin' but more gossip and crabby old ladies, no one has any definitive proof that they are witches or that any supernatural activity has been happening here or in the area. How'd you do?" Sam shrugged.
"I got to meet one of the sisters. We sat and talked, and an old lady gave me tea and cookies."
"Seriously? Damn it! Why do you always get the good stuff? Was it the blonde one?" Sam smirked a little at his brother antics, but shook his head.
"No the brunette, Audrey, did you already forget her name?" His smirk grew a bit as his brother seemed to relax a little though he made a face.
"No, she gave me a fake one. Nicolet, hn. Sounds fancy. You gonna eat those?" Dean asked, and Sam shoved his fries at him. "Thanks little brother!"
"So what do you wanna do now?" Sam asked, watching with mild disgusted as his brother scoffed down what were formally his French fries.
"Well, did you find anything out during your chat?" Sam shook his head.
"No, she didn't say anything that seemed important to demon activity. Her Aunt gave off the impression that she could sense something in me. She said I had good energy. Could be a link to witchy activity? Audrey acted kinda like she was holding something back too. She’s not talking about something."
"What? You think she's got a few skeletons in her closet?"
Sam shook his head a little and sat back, "I don't know, man, it's just somethin' about her. I can't put my finger on it…."
"Aw, does little Sammy have a crush?" Sam glared at his smirking older brother, who took the liberty of stealing a gulp of his coke.
"It's not that." Dean shrugged.
"Hey, there's no shame in wanting the affections of a super fine hottie little brother. I keep telling you this."
"Yeah, but when you say it, 'affection' isn't what you're looking."
"Tomato, tamato, anyway I figure we might want to stay a while. If your right, and we haven't seen the other one or got any leads, wouldn't hurt to hunker down for a few days. Restock, have a nice little vacation, see if anything spooky happens," Dean decided and hopping out of the booth.
Sam nodded, polishing off his coke, and throwing down some cash out of his pocket. "What's that?" Dean asked, pointing to the small green stone that fell out on the table.
"Oh, when I was at the house there was this little girl there, Valerie. She gave me this when I was leaving."
"What the hell is it? A talisman or something?" Dean asked, holding the stone between his fingers now to scrutinize it. Sam shrugged,
"Got me, it doesn't give off any supernatural vibes like normal magical artifacts do. I think it's just a shiny green rock. She just said that her rabbit told her to give it to me."
"Her rabbit?" Sam just shrugged again at Dean's confused face.
"A stuffed rabbit toy, it's like her imaginary friend I think. She acts like it talks to her." Sam offered. Dean smirked,
"Looks like you're not the only one with a crush there Sammy." He smacked Sam on the arm and gave him back his tiny present back.
Sam gave his brother a look before sighing and putting the stone back in his pocket before following his brother.
That night, a very dark cloud hung over the town. Only a very patchy glimmer of stars lit up the night, the moon hidden behind the smoky mass. Brain Sands, a twenty nine year old man who worked night shift at a factory for minimum wage, walked out into the night from his job to go home a go to bed.
The walk was never far. The town didn't have a high crime rate, it was practically non-existent, so he never worried about getting mugged. Besides, Brain Sands was a mountain of a man. He played offensive lineman for his high school football team for all four years. He worked out with his buddies on the weekends, bench pressing 180 pounds easy. If a mugger ever did try to rob Brian, he would have a very serious problem aside from getting arrested.
This night, however, it seemed tonight that someone was going to press their luck.
Brain could feel that something wasn't right. Like an animal instinct that we all have, he knew that he was being followed. He paused on the side walk several times, but saw know one. Figuring that he was over reacting, he would scoff and continue walking home. It wasn't until Brain swore that he could hear the clicking of shoes that he stopped, spun around, and yelled into the night, "Alright, who the hell is out there?"
No one came forward and Brain glared into the dark night before yelling again, "Come on pussy! Either come out or stop following me!" When no one appeared again, Brain cursed under his breath and turned around once more the walk back home, but didn't move. Brain Sands blood ran cold as a hand gripped tightly around his throat, crushing his trachea closed with the force of its grip, and lifting him off his feet. The twenty nine year old beat his fists into the arm of the hand that held him, but to no avail. He's crushing grip never wavered and soon grew hot against Brain's neck, and he would have screamed at the burning sensation had he been able.
Soon, Brain's struggling arms fell to his side. With a final shake from his capture to make sure that no fight was left in him, Brain Sands corpse fell into a crumpled heap on the grounds. The smell of burnt flesh mixing with the crisp late summer night air as his throat sizzled with the mark of a Death Dealer.
