Riker woke oddly. He was paralyzed and his brain didn’t seem to work, then suddenly he was completely lucid. The Visitor's ship floated right over his nose. "Can I help you?" he asked. He couldn't stand up until the ship moved. It spun a bit on one axis but otherwise remained exactly in the spot it was at. He started to move his head to the side. There was a burst of light from the Visitor. It spun quickly, firing the same light in a fan over his face. "I, uh... You don't want me to move, do you? Okay." He centered his head and lay very still. "Computer? Can you connect me to Commander Data, please?" After a moment he added, "And can you scan my groin? It feels...odd." --------- The robed aliens were big scary monsters spreading their instruments across the Nice One. They loomed big in the Scellaran's sights, like fairy tale trolls or punishing gods. And they were hopeless at physical conflict. They seemed confused in any situation where they didn't see one or more attacker. Scellarian tactics proved far superior in the hair forest if only by attacking in groups of two or more. The hardest part of the whole battle was the thundering sound of the giant. Absent Gods only knew what he was saying or to who, but each time he spoke, the air quivered and the 'ground' beneath their feet tossed them around. Still, they bore steadily forward against the intruders. They only had to kill a few tiny giants before the survivors started making rapid clicking sounds and scurrying back to their irregular ship. Theex kept her people on their heels until they were shoving each other out of the way to climb aboard. "Cowards," Heest remarked as the groups cleared the hairs and united. "I can see why they sneak up on their enemies." The slope of the Nice One's groin gave them a gentle ridge to rest on. They fired down on the retreating aliens, mostly just to keep them in a panic. "Don't shoot the ship," Theex reminded her crew. "Captain!" Cleur's voice rang in her helmet. "I think the ship is about to move!" "Do not engage," Theex ordered. "Just monitor them and their transmissions until you have what you need." "Oh, I got that two thit's ago." Theex groaned for a second. Heest signaled for a retreat and regroup. "Then. Come. Get. Us," the CO snarled. --------- The Visitor's ship fired another burst of lights across his face. He took that as reinforcement. "Right, don't move, gotcha." Then it sped down his body and out of his limited vision. "DATA!" he shouted. "Scans of your present situation are limited," the android's voice responded. "But we have detected traces of solanogen." "Where?" "In your bathroom, Commander." "I mean..." he said. "Are solanogen aliens the source of...odd sensations in my nether regions?" "Sir? Are you saying that your penis hurts?" Data asked. --------- The shard was rising over Nice One's thigh as the Seeker came over his belly. The crew fired a few shots as they formed for recovery but few hit the shard. Then they were aboard. People scattered to their stations running towards walls then across the new floor. Theex threw herself into her command chair, wondering how the giants ever managed to get anywhere in an emergency. You couldn't just go straight to your station but had to wend and weave your way, like solving a puzzle. She shook her head to concentrate on the task at hand. "Cleur! You know how to get us home? We don't need the bastards?" "No, Captain." "Battle," she started to say. The entire crew finished shouting "READY!" She pointed at the retreating shape of the aliens' ship. "Let's get them." "Prepare to face the fury of women you scorned," Kief said softly. --------- LaForge helped Riker to his feet and handed him a robe. "And then what happened?" Riker dropped the robe to the floor and rushed out to where his uniform lay. "Bright lights over my face, then it brushed my...belly. Then more bright lights moving across the bathroom. "The door opened and they flew out!" "Data's following them through the ship on scanners. Worf has ordered security to monitor their path but not to interfere. They seem to be in a running battle with another subspace ship." "Is there anything we can do to help?" Riker asked as he shoved his feet into boots. "Well, Data has this idea about the scanning frequencies...." --------- The shard had some means of opening giant's doors that the Seeker couldn't replicate. The good news was that with the size of the doors, there was no way they could be closed before the Seeker could follow. They slowly gained ground. "But stay alert," Theex ordered. "They could be leading us into a trap." "They can hope to," Kief growled. "But then they'll have to face us." "Don't get overconfident," Heest said. But she had an evil smile on when she said it. --------- "Sir!" Worf reported. "The Visitors and the subspace vessel appear to be heading for Cargo Bay Four!" Picard turned to Data at his Ops station. "Scanning," Data said. "Yes. A subspace rift is beginning to form in Cargo Bay Four." "Either they're running away or they're getting reinforcements," Worf said. Picard nodded and he strode to the turbolift, phaser ready. --------- "They're getting sneaky," Heest observed. She had a hand on each Helm officer's shoulders as they cleared another door. The shard had begun passing through the doorway at a careful angle. The winds produced by the differences in pressure on either side tumbled the Seeker as they followed. "We don't need to be right on their tail," Theex said. "They're going through a door. We just have to go through the door, too." Heest nodded. That's when it turned out there was a trap. The shard approached a door at a narrow angle, Heest swung wide to meet the turbulence head on. They were through the door before they noticed that the shard had turned back. The door closed, separating the Seeker from their prey. "CRAP!" Kief swore. Heest brought the ship around and aimed for the sensor that would allow them to open it. "Wait!" Theex shouted. She pointed at the viewscreen. "Who's that?" --------- Worf had moved to intersect the path of the aliens. He was surprised to step onto Deck 28 and find the Visitors hovering outside of a closed door. He tapped his comm. badge. "Commander Data," he called, "report the location of the subspace intruders." "Solanogen is detected in hallway Alpha Two on Deck 28. If it is heading towards Cargo Bay Four, it is taking a roundabout path." "I believe," Worf replied, "they are trying to escape the Visitors." He stepped up to the familiar object. "I know where they are going." There was no reaction. He raised his phaser and showed it to them, then turned to take the more direct route to CB4. --------- "He wants to go to target practice?" Theex sputtered. "NOW?" "Captain, I don't think so," Cleur said. "The targeting range is not on this deck. And the Dark One has never invited US to target practice. Just the Nice One." "We'd kick his ass," Kief muttered. "Yeah, but..." Theex paused. Heest waited patiently at Helm. "Did you see his eyes, Captain?" Kief asked. "He knows the cowards are on board. He wants to go fight them." Theex regarded her weapons officer, then nodded. "Okay, follow him." --------- "We have arrived at the Cargo Bay," Worf reported. Security personnel waited outside the room. "I'm going in alone." Half of his team nodded. Half turned to look at the Visitors. "I mean, the Visitors and I will enter. I do not want anyone caught in a crossfire. "If you detect the subspace invaders, you can try to get a shot, but I'm more concerned about you shooting each other." His people looked at him with deadpan expressions. "Yes," he said with a nod. These were good people, trained to his exacting standards. "And after the security alert, we will hold divisional training as I teach you how to teach your grandmother to suck eggs." They all laughed and he opened the door. "Worf," Data's voice came over the communicator, "I have remotely reprogrammed the targeting scanner on your phaser." "Will it allow me to engage the invaders?" "No. But I wish you to scan the Visitors." --------- "What the flaming salvation of the high twins of Home?" Cleur swore. Theex glanced at her displays. "There's a portal to subspace opening up." "To subspace? A rift?" Theex asked. "Captain, I think the aliens are doing all the heavy lifting for us." She nodded to her backup officers and brought up a program screen. "The hardest part of going home was going to be getting TO the hyperspace domain. "If they open the rift for us, all WE have to do is make sure our matter withstands the conditions of subspace until we can contact Scellar High Command..." Her voice trailed off as she and her team made some frantic adjustments to some onboard systems. Theex left her alone. She turned to Kief. "Any sign of the cowards?" "No," she replied. "But the Dark One is pointing his weapon at us." "What?" She waved at Heest. The main screen stopped showing the location of Cleur's rift and turned to the giant. His weapon was pointed right at them. "Evasive?" Heest asked. "Let's..." "Batteries at overfull!" Dace shouted. Theex looked around in confusion. "Where's the warble? The brain shattering warble?" "He isn't transmitting on that frequency," Kief reported. "He's recharging our systems on purpose?" Theex said with wonder and glee. "Maybe HE'S the nice one?" --------- The Bay door cycled open. A single phaser blast hit the door frame then the door slid shut. Lights on the panel indicated that security locks were engaged. Worf wanted to try to find and engage the intruder but he was keeping his weapon pointed at the Visitors. That ship started to glow then shot across the bay. Beams of light flickered in his view. If he was tracking the ship with his phaser when they fired, it was the powerful version. Little explosions in the air marked the location of the Visitor's target, most certainly the solanogen vessel. A few bright lights appeared on the sides of the Visitor itself but they seemed to shrug off the damage. The target's altitude seemed to drop suddenly. Then the Visitor hovered in one spot and fired straight down twice. Explosions interrupted the beam at successively lower spots. "Hit him once for me," Worf muttered, remembering his post abduction traumas. The visitor paused after he spoke, then drilled seven blast into the ship's floor. "Good girl," Worf said cheerfully. "The subspace rift is open!" Data's voice reported. "Seven solanogen sources are detected coming through the rift!" Worf spun around. The subspace rift was barely visible, a glowing curve of light a few feet off of the deck. He fired his phaser into the rift. It was not likely that he'd hit anything but he may warn the Visitors that they were outnumbered. He also moved forward to stand between the rift and his allies. --------- "The Dark One has been hit!" Kief shouted. Heest directed evasive maneuvers as the towering form tipped towards them. They slid to the side and rode the turbulence of his passage. Small burn marks dotted his face and hands, a few more scattered across his clothing. "Subspace cowards in great numbers!" Cleur reported. "So...it'll be a fair fight," Theex growled. --------- Riker reached the cargo bay just as Barclay's damage control team managed to force the doors. He grabbed a phaser from a Security team member and charged forward. The fight seemed to center on Worf's prone form. Little pinprick explosions were going off on Worf, on the deck around him and a few in the air spaces over him. The Visitors hovered over his head, bright lights flickering in all directions. But they weren't the more powerful beams they'd seen. Riker tapped his badge. "Data! Set-" "All targeting scanners on Deck 28 have been reprogrammed," Data's voice reported. Riker aimed for the tiny ship. At the same moment, Worf moved. Not much, not to stand. But he did lift his weapon to point the scanner at the Visitor. --------- "Engine overload imminent!" Dace shouted. She and her personnel fought frantically to channel energy away from the drives. "Too much of a good thing!" Kief shouted. "What do we target?" "Everything!" Theex ordered. Heest set the ship to spinning. Kief fired, not towards any target, but every time the weapon slewed into a safe direction. The beam hit deck, bulkhead, overhead. It grazed Dark One and Nice One's uniforms but avoided their actual bodies. And it cut shards in half as it crossed their airspace. --------- "There is no detectable solanogen in Cargo Bay Four," Data reported. "Acknowledged," Riker said. He knelt by Worf. "Thanks," he told the Visitor though they certainly wouldn't understand. He found a pulse on the Klingon. "Too bad he passed out while you were doing that death-blossom thing. He'd have loved it." "Preparing to seal the rift," LaForge announced from Engineering. "Graviton pulse in five seconds." "Okay, don't be alarmed," Riker said. "They're going to shut down that thing." He pointed to the shining portal to subspace. It looked to him that the Visitors obeyed his command. They shot forward, to and through the rift. There was a popping sound, then it was gone. "I... I didn't mean that!" Riker said. Doctor Crusher pushed her way through the crowd at the door and ran to Worf's other side. "I didn't mean it," he said again. "I'm sure," Beverly said absently, waving a scanner over the Security Officer. "Rift has been secured," Data reported. Riker swore. --------- Riker was in Ten Forward when Picard found him. He was staring out the forward viewports, watching the stars fly past. Guinan walked past his table, making eye contact with the captain and shaking her head. Picard nodded and stepped up to the table. "Can I sit, Will?" "Of course, Captain," Riker said, half standing. Picard waved off any formalities and took the chair. "You've been spending a lot of time here, I hear," he said. "I'm not aware of any duties I've missed, sir," Riker replied. "Nor am I," Picard said. "Or we'd be having this talk in my Ready Room." Guinan slid two Aldorian ales onto the table and walked away. Picard took one and sipped. "You didn't kill the Visitors, Will." "They thought I was asking them to go into the Rift. To fight the solanogen-based invaders, or seal it up, or something." Picard shook his head. "You could barely get them to leave you alone in the sonic shower," he said. "I can't imagine they attached too much import to where an arm the size of a warp nacelle hung in the air." "We were beginning to understand each other," Riker insisted. "They trusted me. I trusted them. They saved my life." He glanced down towards his lap. "They certainly saved me from a fate worse than death." "But whatever they did, Will, the captain of that ship made the decision. It's on her shoulders." "Maybe," Riker said. He stared at the stars a bit, then tossed back the ale. "But as you say, Captain, there're probably better uses of my time." He stood up. Picard finished his drink and stood as well. He beckoned and Riker followed him out of the lounge. "As a matter of fact," he told Riker, "Data and LaForge have been working on a small anomaly." "Anomaly, sir?" "Yes, they picked up an attempt at communication and have been trying to hash out a common language for the last two hours. "They have a universal translator much as we do, but the systems have radically different assumptions at the base." "Well, I'm not sure what I can do that those two can't," Riker said. They entered the turbo lift, Picard ordering 'bridge.' "I'll supervise the effort to-" "Oh, there's no need for that, Will. Theex just didn't want to try to talk to you until she could be sure she was understood." "Theex?" Will asked. "Where is this message coming from?" "Subspace," Picard said. "But from what planet?" Riker pressed. "Subspace, Will. It's coming from subspace. From someone IN sub-" He stopped talking as the doors opened and Riker plunged through the gap. His XO ran down the ramp from the upper stations to hover beside Ops. The screen showed a woman. A beautiful woman, if Riker had ever seen one. A slender brunette, her hair was long and straight, framing an oval face that was alive with happiness. She was smiling, bright teeth showing, as she spoke to Worf. "And my Weapons Officer wants to climb into your ear and lay her eggs in your brain!" "I'm...honored," Worf said in a questioning tone. "She means it as a compliment," Troi said from her seat by the Captain's chair. The figure on the screen tapped her lips for a second. Behind her, Riker saw the interior of the Object. Women stood on decks that hung at crazy angles over the one the speaker stood on. Strange equipment filled the space. There were no walls or even partitions. Just one big room. He thought about how weird that was, then about how weird they must have found his ship. "What she means," the speaker resumed, "is that my paranoid security advisor can think of no safer place to leave her offspring, than in your head." Behind her, a blonde woman sitting at a console lifted her hand just enough to offer a tiny wave to Worf. "I... I AM honored," the Klingon said. Troi sighed, so Riker assumed he was being very sincere, in a way that frightened the more pacifistic Counselor. Deep dark eyes drifted across the bridge to spear Riker where he stood. "I'm told your designation is William Riker," she said. "I'm Theex. I captain the Far Traveling Seeker." "It's a pleasure to meet you," Riker said. Troi sighed again. "Thanks for...saving me." "Thanks for saving us," Theex said. "Our sojourn among you and your universe of deranged matter has been explained. You honor us with your courtesy and hospitality." "We're deranged matter?" he said with a laugh. She opened her mouth, but he waved to dismiss the discussion. "I guess it's all relative. I, uh, I was worried about you. All alone in the subspace domain with our common enemy." "Oh, them?" Theex waved to someone offscreen. A small transparent box was handed to her. Something dark and irregular rested inside it. "I have a trophy I'd send you if I could figure out how. "My sciences staff says there's no way to know what size you'll be in a new universe. I guess the cowards here were surprised by our arrival." She lifted the box to the camera. Whatever it was, pieces were falling off of it and littering the bottom of the box. "What is that?" Riker asked. "Their home planet." She tossed the box back offscreen. "We hit it with our hull when we appeared here. I don't think they're going to bother either of our people for a while." "Thank you," he said. She nodded. "Anyway, our home planet has figured out how to open a way for us to go home. Before we left, though, we wanted to tell you... Well. I, uh... I enjoyed following you around, seeing your ship, William Riker." Troi sighed once more. Riker thought, and not for the first time, that the Betazed knew way too much. Some sort of klaxon sounded on the Far Traveling Seeker. "We have to go!" Theex said. "See you around the-" She shook her head. "No. We will never meet again, will we?" "No," he agreed. "Then goodbye....Will." "Goodbye, Theex. Safe travels." "Safe-" The transmission cut off in a burst of static. Data closed the hailing frequency. "It is a pity," Worf said. "What?" Riker asked. "That you'll never have eggs in your brain?" "No, Commander. When the Far Traveling Seeker inserted itself into the subspace domain? Near the solanogen-based life forms' home planet? I'd like to have seen the expressions on their faces just about then...." The bridge watch laughed. Picard smiled and let it go on for a moment, then asked about the status of their current mission. The end.
