Ch. 4
***
I'm looking at you through the glass. Don't know how much time has passed.
All I know is that it feels like forever.
But no one ever tells you that forever feels like home, sitting all
alone
inside your head.

Jayne followed Liana's curves with his eyes as he walked silently behind her through the brightly lit corridor up into Serenity's galley. She was skinnier than he remembered.
But she's still got it where it counts, he thought, lips twisting. He also couldn't help remembering the dark circles under her eyes, as though she'd gone without sleep for several days.Them eyes...Then again, he also couldn't shake the eerie sense her presence on the ship had brought upon his mind. Jayne scratched his head, chalked it up to dreams. When Liana stopped short of the stairwell leading to the galley, he almost tripped over her. He managed to keep that from happening, though, and peered down at her quizzically.Li's face was sad as she raised a hand, almost reaching out to touch him. She stopped herself short, though, her brow furrowing.“Wha's'a matter, pischouette?” Jayne said, anxious now, as he moved closer to her.He planted his hands on either of the stair railings behind him, cutting off her escape route. He looked into her eyes, letting his persuade her to speak.“Look, Jayne,” Liana began with a soft sigh. “I want to tell you before we go—oof!”At that moment, the ship jostled, and Jayne found himself almost tripping backwards. He stayed upright, however—while also managing to support Li's weight as she pitched forward into his chest. He gripped her upper arms in his strong hands, searched her eyes intently.“Hey, you okay, cher?” He asked her with genuine concern. When she didn't answer immediately, he looked away and made a face, muttering darkly, “Dammit, Wash...what the hell have ya done gone and gotten us into now?”Liana bit down on her lip then, tensing slightly at the feel of being so near to this man. When she tried to pull away, Jayne didn't let go, and so she placed her palms against his chest, intending to push him away. Serenity pitched again, but Jayne held Li fast and kept them on their feet. When the ship straightened out, Li tried, once again, to push away from Jayne. She only succeeded, however, in making him feel as though she were coming onto him. As her gray and violet eyes gazed helplessly up into his, Jayne growled softly in the back of his throat, and, giving into an urge he'd had since he'd first laid eyes upon her in the passenger dorms, he dipped his head, planting a wet kiss on her neck.“Jayne,” Liana whispered urgently, pushing at him frantically. But her whispered gasp only told him she was as turned on as he was.So he flicked his tongue around her sensitive jugular artery and began to bite down gently.“Jayne, stop,” Liana raised her voice now. “This is not the time—not to mention you—mmmff!”He silenced any further protests she may have pitifully tried to get him to hear by covering her mouth with his own, an indulgence he rarely ever let himself have. But she was different...she was Liana Laveau....his pischouette....his friend.Liana remained tense and flailing, but ever so slowly, she began to relax into him, until, all at once she was pressing herself tightly against him. When she moaned softly into his lips, he thrust his tongue into her eager mouth to explore her familiar taste. She was like spice and honey and the bayou; all the good tastes and smells that reminded him of home.He groaned into her mouth and plunged his hands into her hair, feeling the silken strands and lifting them to his nose to inhale her herbal scent. He felt her sag into him, and noticed her knees beginning to weaken. This pleased Jayne greatly, and as he wrapped an arm around her waist to steady her against him, he marveled at her reaction to him after all these years...“Ah, sorry about the turbulence, folks,” a man's nasily voice came from behind them on the stairwell. “We're out of it now. There ought not to be anymore worries from here on—Jayne?”As if someone—namely one Hogan Washburn—had poured a bucket of ice water over him, the spell Liana had cast upon Jayne was broken; the mercenary growled softly at the interruption and released the startled, wide-eyed woman, shoving her behind him protectively as he turned to face the intruder. He glared angrily at the Serenity's pilot.“Yeah,” Jayne answered flatly, “there had better not be any more worries from here on in, ya gorram sorry excuse for a pilot!” Then Jayne sneered at the other man. “What is it, lil man? Need some phone books to sit on in that chair o' yers? Can't see over the stick—?”“Hey-o!” Liana spoke up shrilly from behind him. She sidestepped him now to look sheepishly up at a stunned Wash before turning to address the merc with a stern look.“Manners, Jayne Cobb! Why, your mama would have yer hide, if she heard ya talkin' like that—and to a pilot of all people!” She took a step back, then punched Jayne in the shoulder.“Ow, hey...” he warned, glaring at the pair equally now and rubbing his sore shoulder. “Don't throw hands at me, girl. You remember what happened the last time ya tried that.”To his mild surprise, Liana blinked and stilled, as though she really couldn't think of something to say. Jayne, himself, remembered that night on Lilac in amazing, intensely vivid detail.A rare occasion, Jayne thought grimly now, and relished in the silence, taking the opportunity to round his full attention on Wash.“Now, you look here, lil man,” Jayne began, waving a finger at Wash. He didn't get to finish, however, for Zoe had picked that precise moment to come through the galley doors and join her husband on the stairwell in the corridor. The dark woman arched an eyebrow at the scene before her.“What did you just say to my husband, Jayne?” Zoe began, bemused. Then, Wash stepped in front of her.“Now, now,” the blond pilot soothed his wife. “I can handle this, darling. I promise, if I need help, you'll be the first one I tag into the ring.”The first mate narrowed her eyes, but remained silent. Instead, she turned her attention to the woman near Jayne.“Miss Laveau?” Zoe asked, her voice thick with concern. The mate pushed past Wash to walk down the stairs and waved Jayne aside, coming to rest beside Liana, her arm going around her shoulders protectively.“Is this mean ol' man trying t' take advantage o' you or somethin', honey?” Zoe glared at Jayne darkly. Now, it was Liana's turn to arch an eyebrow. She couldn't remember the last time she felt so at a loss for words.Jayne sneered at the women.“Oh, believe me, Zoe,” he muttered oily. “There weren't no advantages being taken what weren't willfully—hell, eagerly—given, now were there, Miss Laveau?” He added a mocking emphasis on the 'miss' and smiled at her salaciously. At that, Liana Laveau's face and ears turned an adorably dark shade of vermilion. Unable to stay another moment and give anyone a satisfactory answer as to what the pilot had just witnessed, the mysterious eyed woman turned, fleeing back down the corridor the way she had come.***“What was that all about?” Zoe asked, turning on the mercenary. “Jayne, what the hell did you do to her?”“Yeah, Jayne,” Wash cut in with a wide grin he tried—and failed—to hide behind his hand. “What did you do to her? I mean, if I hadn't come in when I did, you two would have got it on right here on the stairs.”Zoe looked at Wash critically, then asked, “What do you mean?”She turned on Jayne once more. Grabbing her sawed-off, lever action repeater, the first mate cocked the gun and pointed it directly between Jayne's eyes.“What did you do to her, Jayne?” she demanded again through gritted teeth.“What did I—? Wash!” Jayne now implored, helplessly eying Zoe's husband. “You saw what happened—it weren't like she was puttin' up a fight, were she?”Wash descended the stairwell, chuckling aloud now."My, how the tables have turned," Wash commented, strolling toward the pair. "Just a minute ago you were ready to kill me, and now you need my help. Ain't that some sweet, sweet poetic justice?" His blue eyes twinkled merrily at the helpless look on the large merc's face. When Wash came near Zoe, he touched her arm gently until she lowered the shotgun. Then he put a comforting arm around the woman and decided that, although he enjoyed seeing the big ape squirm, he would show Jayne mercy.“Ya know, t' tell ya the truth, honey, she actually didn't put up a fight.” Wash's eyebrows shot up at the same time Zoe's did.“I know, I know, it sounds crazy.” He continued, running a hand through his blond hair. “But I swear to God, she looked like she was throughly enjoying herself. It was almost like she knew him from somewhere or—”Now, Wash held his hands up in a gesture of surrender when his wife locked her brown eyed stare on him. He backed up, grinning sheepishly, and said, “Hey, I didn't know they were in here, like this.” He frantically gestured around the room and glared at Jayne.“It wasn't like I was trying to eavesdrop...” the pilot muttered.“Wash,” Zoe began, holstering her weapon and stepping toward her husband. “Start from the beginning and tell me exactly what you saw, baby.”As Wash began describing the events that he witnessed unfold, Jayne took the opportunity to chase after Liana. He made a face at the first mate and the pilot, their heads bent together, and waved them off with a snort. Then, he turned and followed the path Liana had taken back down the corridor.“...and after he got done basically telling me where I could go, she stepped in and said something about his mother—”“She was talkin' 'bout his mama?” Zoe couldn't help interrupting him at this point in his narrative. Wash nodded emphatically.“Yeah,” the pilot confirmed in a soft, somewhat awed, voice.“But the weirdest part was,” he continued thoughtfully, “right before you came in, Jayne told her something to the effect of, 'You remember what happened the last time you hit me.' I'm telling you, sweetie, it was strange, and, quite frankly, a little unnerving to see how she reacted when he'd said it.”“That's putting it mildly,” Zoe muttered, frowning at the ship's deck before exchanging a questioning glance with her husband.“Who hit who?”Just then, the sound of Kaylee's concerned voice had rung out behind them. When the pair at the bottom of the short stairwell turned, they saw the young ship's mechanic approaching them. The look on her face almost made Wash grin wryly. But a short look at his wife had him clearing his throat.“Jayne,” he declared. But before he could continue, Kaylee blurted out, “Jayne? Who was he hittin' this time?”As she quickened her pace to join them, Wash shook his head with a smile and muttered, “Hitting on is more like it...”“No, no. Liana Laveau—” Zoe began to explain. Again, Kaylee interrupted.“He hit Liana?!” Kaylee's normally sun-shiny face withered now. “That just ain't like him. Hittin' women...” she muttered softly. “Is it?” she added hopefully.Suddenly, Sammy Collins appeared, quickly walking up behind Kaylee. His thin face appeared worried as he approached and stopped to stand beside the mechanic.“Woah, woah, now—who hit Liana, Miss Kaylee?” He put a hand on her shoulder and searched her face.“Not what we're trying to tell you,” Wash spoke up, his slight impatience now coming through his wry grin. “Listen. I saw Liana Laveau,” he continued quietly, “hit Jayne Cobb.”
“Oh, my god,” Kaylee replied, a hand coming up to cover her mouth as her eyes widened in horror. “Is she okay?”“He didn't hit her back, sweetie,” Zoe soothed the younger woman.“Wait,” Sammy cut in here. “Are yall sayin dat Jayne Cobb is on dis ship? As in, right now?”“You know him, too?” Zoe arched an eyebrow at the same time Wash gave the group a toothy grin."Well, who doesn't know the Hero of Canton?"A.N.
