Castiel stood outside his chamber doors, trying to figure out how to walk through them and face the problem within. Beyond that wood was a tormented soul, probably scared and confused. Though, from what Castiel had sensed, the man he’d pulled from Hell would never admit it.
And he had gone and claimed that man with absolutely no idea why. He’d said as much to his Princes when he’d been called back into assembly. Michael and Lucifer had calmly demanded to know why he had done it; and he had been unable to tell them. The best he could do was describe an intense feeling that had overcome him. As if something beyond his comprehension had reached into his core and compelled him to lay his hand on the mortal. And he hadn’t hesitated. Castiel was more disturbed by that fact than the breaking of an old rule among Seraphs: Never claim the soul of a mortal. He hadn’t just broken it, he hadn’t even given it a seconds’ thought as he plowed straight through it. Something in him had pushed him so strongly that he had seared his presence onto the young man’s soul, placing a mark that every Seraph would see and know, creating a bond that no one would ever be able to break between them. The bond he had invoked in less than a minute lasted a lifetime and had combined a bit of the man’s, Dean’s, life force with his own. Dean didn’t even know it yet, but he and Castiel were bound to each other for the rest of his natural born life and possibly even beyond. Now all he had to do was walk through those doors, and tell the blonde that he was bound to a commander of the Seraph legion that had captured and tortured him, and that the bond would last… pretty much forever. The brunette heaved a heavy sigh and rubbed his face in his hands. What in his Father’s name was he doing? Sending out a quick but desperate prayer, Castiel squared his shoulders and entered his rooms. Everything was just as he’d left it, nothing out of place and no Dean in sight. He felt a flash of worry that maybe Lilith had lied to him and taken the blonde prisoner somewhere else, but even she wouldn’t have dared now that he had permission from the princes. That’s when he saw the doors to the balcony were open. He walked through them slowly, if his guest was out here he didn’t want to startle him, but found that he needn’t have bothered. Dean was fast asleep, sprawled over Castiel’s only chair on the balcony. His breathing was deep and even as his eyes moved behind closed lids while he dreamed. The Seraph stood for a long moment, just watching the slumbering mortal and studying the man that would now be sharing his quarters. He looked younger in sleep; the deep lines around his eyes were smoothed out without that constant glare Castiel had been treated to. He stood there, contemplating waking the young man or letting him rest longer. In the end he left his new charge where he was, closing the balcony doors behind him as he headed back into his rooms. Dean would be safe out there with the wards he put up; besides, he had a bigger problem waiting for him outside his front door. Heaving a sigh, Castiel moved to admit his brothers and sister inside. Anna strode through the door followed more slowly by Balthazar and a grinning Gabriel. “What in this world were you thinking?!” the redhead screamed as soon as the door was shut behind her. “Nice to see you, Anna, Gabriel, Balthazar,” Castiel greeted them calmly. “Hello, Cassie,” Balthazar said, happily clapping the other angel on the back. Gabriel’s grin just widened as he plopped down in Cas’ armchair. “How many times must I ask you not to refer to me as ‘Cassie’?” “Until it stops entertaining me,” the blonde answered cheekily, brushing passed the still fuming redhead in the middle of the room. “Castiel! Do not ignore me!” Anna yelled at him. He raised an eyebrow as he turned to face his sister and superior. “I was not attempting to,” he replied calmly. “I was only offering greetings before I attempted to answer your question.” Anna’s glare intensified and she crossed her arms over her armored chest. Her silver wings snapped open and closed in annoyance as she stared down her younger brother. “Don’t get cheeky with me. And I demand to know what you were thinking! You KNOW we’re forbidden from bonding with a mortal, especially one who is so dangerous that he was locked in the Perdition Block!” “I saw him fight, and while that boy’s got some skills, he is not a danger to our little Castiel,” Balthazar interjected. He regarded his sister calmly with pale blue eyes, lazily picking a few loose feathers from his golden wings. “The soldiers he fought were low tier minions, Castiel is a commander and more than capable of handling a single mortal.” “I know that!” Anna snapped, not even gracing the older Seraph with a glance, her blue eyes burning into Castiel’s. “It’s not the little mortal I’m worried about.” “Why else would you be so afraid for Cassie?” “Because he’s brought himself to Lucifer’s attention, and if there’s one bigger threat to Castiel now than Michael himself, it’s Lucifer!” “Careful not to let him hear you talking like that, darling. Old Lucy’s got a temper you know.” “That’s exactly why I’m worried! Castiel has openly defied him and even though he and Michael agreed to let it pass,” she took a step forward to get right into the brunette angel’s face. “Do you really think he’s going to let this go?” “Honestly, I didn’t think about it,” Castiel answered solemnly, knowing how weak and irresponsible that sounded. “Oh! That’s just great!” Anna yelled, throwing her arms in the air. “That’s enough,” Gabriel said, speaking for the first time since this whole fiasco began. He was regarding Castiel with smiling green eyes as his golden-tipped, ivory wings folded themselves serenely behind him. “It’s done, Anna, and I think we’ve bothered little bro enough for today.” He stood, still smirking, and clapped Castiel hard on the shoulder. “Good luck with your new pet, brother. At least you picked a pretty one. Now! Who’s hungry?” he asked, half-dragging Anna out the door. “I’m in the mood for some ice-cream!” “Later Cassie. And don’t worry, we’ll keep one eye on Lucifer,” Balthazar called as he followed the other two back out of the room. And with that, his family was gone and Castiel was right back where he started. Alone in his chambers with a sleeping blonde he still had no idea how to deal with once he woke. Sighing for what felt like the hundredth time that day, Castiel moved to his large bathroom, deciding to clean up and change. Maybe his guest would be a little less hostile if he wasn’t in full armor when next they spoke. After rinsing the dirt from his body and pulling a few loose feathers from his dark blue wings, Castiel moved to his room and pulled on a simple white tunic and soft pants. He poked his head out of his room, checking for a certain blonde but he must’ve still been out on the porch. He moved to his large arm chair, his favorite place to just sit and think about things. He certainly had a lot of that to do so he sat down and took advantage of his moment alone. Kuragari: I apologize for short chapters but when I hit a stopping point I like to post. I probably should just leave a few in one long chapter but then you’d all be waiting a lot longer for updates because I’m a stupid perfectionist. Also it’s been a while since I’ve written Castiel. So sorry if he’s a bit OOC. I’m trying my best. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
