“When did this happen?” Sam asked her. “Last night,” Sookie replied. “When Liz didn’t come home I got worried. And you were late coming in this morning. I know you’re here earlier in the day.” “It’s ok Sook. I spent the night with Sam because of the weather,” I said to her, not wanting her to worry anymore. If she found out that that female vampire bit me and left me to bleed she would be more concerned. Especially since Eric had to save my ass. Sookie’s eyes widened. I knew immediately she had read my mind. “Sook, it’s ok. I’m alright,” I said soothingly. “Eric saved you?” she asked slowly. Sam nodded. “What happened exactly?” “Liz, go on and check on table 3. I’ll tell Sookie,” Sam said. I nodded and grabbed my apron from the back. I tied it around my waist and began working. There were two women sitting in a booth. I stopped by their table and smiled. “Whatcha having?” I asked them cheerfully. One of them looked up at me. She let her eyes roam over me, as though she was checking me out. “I’ll just have a piece of pie. Blueberry and a glass of water,” she replied. I wrote down her order and turned to the second woman. She had her eyes narrowed at me. “Nothing for me. Though it’s a pity one of the bodies they found earlier this morning wasn’t you or this bar owners’,” she said coldly. “Excuse me?” I asked not understanding why she was saying what she was saying. “You heard me,” she said louder. “It’s a shame both you and that ridiculous owner weren’t the ones killed. Ever since you came here, strange shit has been happening. Bodies are being found more frequently. And he’s no better. He’s just as strange.” I looked at her stunned. I sensed someone behind me over my right shoulder .The bar was silent. I heard an angry hiss behind me. “She has nothing to do with what’s going on,” I heard Lafayette’s voice hiss angrily. “What’s wrong with you two?” I sensed someone else over my left shoulder. “Get out. The both of you,” Sam said coldly. “You are no longer welcomed in my bar until you speak to my waitresses with respect.” Both women slowly rose to their feet. They stood side by side and their heads were low, their chins touching their chest. When they looked up, their eyes were an amber color. I gasped. They smirked. “Oh please,” the first woman scoffed. “Do you really think someone like you could stop us? A measly shifter? Trust us. You would lose entirely and you wouldn’t be able to save your precious ‘human’ here.” All the color from Sam’s face drained. Lafayette took charge and ushered both women out of the bar. Once they were gone, chatter among the customers resumed. Lafayette put a hand on my shoulder. “You ok girlfriend?” he asked worriedly. I nodded. He affectionately cuffed Sam on the shoulder before he headed back in the kitchen. I slowly turned around to face Sam. He swallowed. “Sam what were they?” I asked him. “Werewolves,” He replied finally. The rest of the afternoon went fine. When it was closing time, Sam asked Sookie to remain late, along with me. He had asked that she call Bill and Eric to come as well. He was going to call a meeting. Just before they arrived, it was fairly quiet in the bar. I put a song on in the jukebox. I began singing along with it as I worked. I was starting to dance too as I worked. I twirled around as I mopped the floor. I had no idea that Eric and Bill had stepped into the bar until I spun around and spied them. I stopped and dropped the mop. They both had amused expressions on their faces. “Oh. Hi Um I’ll go tell Sam you’re here,” I stammered embarrassed. I quickly hurried into the back where Sam’s office was. I knocked on the door. “Come in,” I heard him call. I opened the door and poked my head in. He was sitting at the desk with his head propped up. He was staring at the wall. “Sam? Bill and Eric are here,” I said softly. He jumped and got up. “Thanks Liz,” he said. He looked distracted and scared. “Hey, is everything alright?” I asked him worriedly going over to him. Sam nodded. “Yeah come on,” he said as he gently brushed past me. I followed him. Sookie was sitting in a booth next to Bill. Eric was sitting across from them. I sat down beside Eric, trying hard not to look at him after the vision I had the night before. I cleared my throat as Sam pulled up a chair and turned it around. He straddled it backwards and let his arms cross over the back of it. “I think I know whose killing people here in Bon Temps,” Sam said slowly. We all watched him expectantly. “Werewolves,” He said. “Werewolves? Here?” Eric asked tilting his head. “Are you sure?” Sam nodded. “There were two in my bar earlier. They said some things to Liz,” I felt Eric’s eyes on me, as well as Bills. “What did they say to you?” I heard Eric ask. “Oh nothing much just that they wished the bodies that were found were me and Sam’s and that if they wanted us dead, someone like Sam couldn’t protect his precious ‘human’,” I said slowly. “Hmm,” Bill said slowly. “That sounds like they’re sending a message. Clearly they want Sam and Liz dead. The people they found at the lake were both blond and similar in appearance.” “But why? Why would werewolves want to kill Sam or Liz?” Sookie asked. “Clearly they know what Sam is. He could be a threat, but why Liz?” Eric mused. I crossed my arms on the table top and let my chin rest on top of my arm. “’Cause I’m psychic. I can see the future,” I said miserably. There was silence before Bill spoke. “If they’re planning anything, Liz could inevitably see what they were doing and they feel she could try and thwart it,” Sookie looked scared. “But how do they know she’s psychic?” “That’s the million dollar question Sook,” Sam said looking miserable. He looked like he was in conflict. “I can’t protect Liz like Eric and Bill could. So I want to know if Bill or Eric would be willing to be Liz’s guard until we can stop the werewolves or at least figure out what they’re up to.” “No,” I said shaking my head fiercely. “I want to stay with you.” “Liz,” Sam said. “I’m not like the vampires. They could kill me easily. I’d rather die than have something happen to you. Bill and Eric are the only ones capable of doing this job. I know you’d be safe.” I shook my head stubbornly. “I am not going to go anywhere without you,” Sam angrily pounded on the table, causing the silverware to jump. I jumped too. “Liz, I am not asking you,” he said angrily. “I’m telling you. I don’t care about you anymore.” I froze my lower jaw dropping in an O. Sookie’s eyes narrowed, and I could tell she scanned Sam’s mind. Pain flitted across her expression. “Sam, don’t do this,” She said quietly. “Shut up Sookie,” Sam snapped. “You were good for sex but that was all.” Pain gripped my heart. I heard Eric clear his throat. “I shall gladly keep an eye on Liz. She can stay at Bill’s. I will remain there. No one would think of looking for her there, not even werewolves.” Sam turned to Eric and nodded. I angrily slid out from the booth and stormed out of the bar. SOOKIE I watched Elizabeth storm from the bar. I could hear her pained and anguished thoughts as she left. Eric got up slowly and followed her. I slid out of the booth. Bill got up too. I stood in front of Sam. This is the only way I could think of protecting Liz. Maybe if she wasn’t around me anymore, she’ll be safe. I’d rather have something happen to me then to her. I heard Sam’s thoughts roll over me. I smacked him. He looked startled. “This is killing her Sam,” I said angrily. “What you’re doing to her now is killing her more than what the werewolves are doing! She loves you so much!” Pain crossed over Sam’s expression. “I’d rather have something happen to me than her. This is the only way I could think of protecting her,” his voice was thick with emotion. I could sense it was killing him too. “No Sam,” I said shaking my head. “There are other ways. I hope you’re happy.” With that, I turned and left. Bill glanced at Sam, before following me close behind. LIZ I entered Bill’s plantation home. Jessica Hamby, a newly turned teen vampire, greeted me at the door. Her long red hair was pulled into a braid. She saw me and threw her arms around me, hugging me tightly. I hugged her back. “Hi Liz,” she said softly and pulled me into the living room. I sat down on the couch. Eric watched from the entrance way. Bill pulled him aside. I saw them talking heatedly. Jessica smiled. She was a pretty 17 year old girl when she was forcibly changed. I felt bad for her. “So,” Jessica said softly. “I hear you and Sam are together. How’s that going?” “Sam no longer cares about me. Clearly he was just using me for sex,” I said bitterly as pain gripped my heart again. Jessica’s large green eyes widened. “Oh I don’t think so,” she said slowly. “I have a feeling he just said that to protect you. I know Sam. He would never use a woman like that.” I looked at her. She beamed. “I’ve met him a few times. I’m a good judge of character. I can tell he really loves you,” I just sighed. I heard the conversation going on between Bill and Eric. “Eric, she is Sam’s! You cannot!” Bill hissed. “He renounced his care for her,” Eric said smoothly. “So she is free.” “No,” Bill said shaking his head. “That was a ploy. He only said those things to protect her! She is still his! He cares very much for her.” Angrily, I got up and went over to them. “I’m not some fucking prize to be passed around! I just want to be left alone right now,” I shouted. “Jess, can you please show me to my room?” Jessica got up and gently took my hand. She led me upstairs. Once inside the spare bedroom that was filled with colonial furniture, I face planted on the bed and burst into tears. I cried myself to sleep. I woke up around 2 am to someone knocking softly on my door. I groggily got up. “Who is it?” I called. “It’s Bill. There is someone here to see you,” I padded over to the door and opened it. Bill stood there. Standing by his legs was the red and white border collie. “What’s he doing here?” I demanded icily. I saw the dog flinch. “I asked him to come. Eric wants to form a bond with you and he’ll do it as he’s that determined. I told him that you are Sam’s and he cannot do that,” Bill sighed. “But he did the same thing to Sookie. I figure if Sam’s here, he will see that vow and honor it and not go ahead with the bond.” I looked down at Sam the Border collie. He lowered his eyes to the floor. “Fine,” I said shortly. I held the door open for the dog to enter. “Thank you Bill.” My tone softened a bit. Bill nodded and turned to leave. I closed the door and stepped around the dog. “Sleep on the floor dog,” I said coldly as I found a nightgown in the armoire. I pulled off my shirt. The dog kept his eyes low as I changed. I slid under the covers and turned on my side, my back facing the dog. I shut my eyes. I heard Sam’s nails clicking on the wood floor panels as he came closer to the bed. I felt him jump up. I sat up. He was standing over my legs. He let out a whine. “Get on the floor Sam,” I snapped. “You don’t care about me anymore remember? You just used me for sex.” The dog flinched again. I pushed him away. I laid back down with my back to him. I felt him crawl up against my back. I angrily jabbed my elbow into his ribs. I heard him let out a low whelp and whine. I eventually dozed off. I felt warm sunshine on my back as well as familiar warmth against my body. Memories of the night before came flooding back. I quickly turned over and spied Sam lying there naked. I threw off my covers. Sam woke up abruptly. “Liz,” he began but I jumped up using the bed as a barrier between us. “Shut up Sam,” I snapped at him. “You made yourself clear. I was just a lay to you. You don’t care about me anymore.” “No! That’s not true! I just said those things cause I wanted to keep you away from me! You would be safer not being around me if the werewolves were going to try and hurt you! I didn’t care what happened to me but I was more worried about you!” Sam cried. “Those words hurt me Sam!” I cried. “Very much!” Sam looked miserable. “I didn’t mean to hurt you. I was only thinking of your safety,” “Well you hurt me,” I retorted. Sam took some more steps toward me, but I backed up. “Fine,” Sam said quietly. “I know what I have to do. I do love you Liz and I am in love with you more than you could ever know. The main thing is you’re safe.” With that, he changed back into the dog and galloped out of the room. I changed into my uniform and headed to work. Sam hadn’t showed up for work all day. I felt my anger ebbing away slightly and concern slithered into my heart. “Where is Sam?” Sookie asked as she placed down table 9’s order and wiped her hands on her apron. “I don’t know,” I said. Just then, one of the women from the day before stepped into the bar. One of the werewolves. “Elizabeth Weston!” she called loudly. The entire bar quieted down. I looked at Sookie with fear as I slowly approached her. “Yes?” I asked tentatively, my heart hammering in my chest. “We have your shifter,” She smirked. “He came to us willingly. He’s to be executed in the morning.” The whole world fell into a deafening silence. My heart hammered in my chest. I hadn’t heard Sookie come up beside me. I heard a muffled hum of them speaking but I couldn’t move. I felt Sookie’s hand on my arm, finally pulling me out of the stupor I’d gone into. I looked at her. She had tears in her eyes. “They’re going to execute him in the morning. He went to them willingly. Why would he do that?” I collapsed to my knees. She sank with me. “Sookie it’s all my fault!” I said bursting into tears. I told her about our fight at Bill’s place. Sookie wrapped her arms around me and pulled me into a hug. “Sam’s gonna die because of me!” I sobbed into her shoulder. She held me tightly while I cried. Suddenly, in a flash of light, the scene around me changed. I was no longer in Merlotte’s. I was sitting in a house on the floor. The room was empty except for a mattress. Sam was lying on the mattress. He was wearing a white tee shirt and a pair of boxer shorts. He had a black eye and several cuts and bruises on his face. He looked as though someone had badly beaten him. I reached out to touch him. His eye was swollen but it opened slightly. “Liz?” he croaked out in a dry whisper. The door swung opened and a guy entered. The guy went over to him and kicked him in the ribs, causing Sam to recoil. “No talking,” he said coldly. “Just cherish the last few hours of life you have left. Not even your precious human will be able to save you.” He gave Sam one last kick before leaving the room. I cried out in anguish as I saw Sam’s condition. The scene shifted again, shimmering so I caught the front of the house. It zoomed in so I caught the address. It vanished in a blink of an eye and I was on the floor of Merlotte’s in Sookie’s arms. “What did you see Liz?” Sookie asked me. “I saw Sam,” I said thickly. “I saw where they are holding him.” “Then let’s go get him,” she said firmly.
