The shadows were climbing the walls of her room like the creatures she once dreamt lived in her closet as a child. Now as a grown woman these shadows were no longer creatures of imagination but real monsters, vampires and werewolves’ alike living in the shadows of her hometown. When she was human she dreamt of a man sweeping her off her feet like in her favorite movie ‘Gone with the Wind,’ but as she got older she began to understand that these ideas were folly. When she became a vampire her instincts drove her to a darker craving, she dreamt of blood and seduction. On the surface she was the same Caroline as before, but always somewhere in the back of her mind dwelled a darkness in her that threatened to consume her. It was in those moments when she stood in the wind as she watched the darkened skies just before a rain storm that she could feel that darkness, the wind rushing against her skin like the hands of a lover. She lived by a different standard, a strong sense of morality which prevented her from indulging in such fantasies. Now more than ever did she need to contain such passions within herself least her lust lead her to distraction. When she returned home from Rome she was a changed woman, that darkness had been sated within her, relished by one who had stolen her away from her friends and family. Now they were watching her, asking questions, constantly dwelling on her doorstep as if they knew her misdeeds and her sinful behavior without even asking. It was shame that drove her away from them, made her focus on her school work. It was him that made her dream. Dreams were a dangerous form of reality. Dreams made people consider things they’d never considered before because dreams vocalized the needs of a person that they refuse to acknowledge. Her dreams were about his eyes and his smile and the sound of his voice. She would spend nights alone in her room waking up covered in sweat because she was haunted by him. This was her punishment. It wasn’t the days when he stole her away and made her love him, made her crave him like no other. It wasn’t the weeks after she returned that her friends followed her around and he watched her from the shadows. The nights of stolen kisses in the dark because she couldn’t bear to think they were coming to destroy him. He had taken her heart from her, and try as she might to pretend he meant nothing to her it was alone in the dark when she was trying to sleep that she missed him. She longed for his arms to hold her close in the dark and yet they never did, and they never would now. “Caroline?” Elena asks one morning while they’re picking out gowns for prom. “Hm?” she replies distractedly because the gown she’d chosen was a particular shade of red that she knew he’d have loved. “What do you think?” Elena asks, twirling slowly on the spot. Elena had always been beautiful, Caroline thinks as she stares at her friend, Elena could go in a brown paper bag and she’d still be beautiful. “You look great,” she smiles at Elena and then stares down at the dress in her hands. “Tyler is going to love that,” Elena grins at Caroline as she also turns her gaze down to the gown in Caroline’s hands. She wasn’t buying it for Tyler. The prom was everything Caroline had ever dreamed of. Tyler was wearing a handsome black tux and he was leading her across the dance floor just like she’d pictured it. Everything was just as it was meant to be, the bad guys lost and the good guys won. Her friends were all alive and well and she and Tyler were free to be together. The only problem was that they hands that held her as they danced across the dance floor weren’t the one’s she wanted. She closed her eyes and imagined them to be different, smoother hands with longer fingers, caressing her lower back as they swayed together to the beat of the music. The illusion was almost real as they danced…almost. “Are you ok?” Elena asks worriedly while Caroline is struggling to cover up the tear tracks on her face with some powder foundation she keeps in her purse. “I’m fine,” Caroline smiles at Elena and continues what she is doing. Nobody was ever allowed to know the truth about Klaus and herself. Nobody would ever know what was going on when nobody was around, all the times that she’d sneak off to his house to sit and watch him paint or drink wine with him by the hearth in his room while they sat and simply enjoyed being together. It was a passion she couldn’t help but indulge in, something that Klaus had ignited in her and she found herself unable to restrain any longer. He had made her fantasies reality and now she could never rid herself of him. He was in her mind and heart and soul now. Those happy times fell apart though but it didn’t surprise Caroline. Her guilt drove her to break it off with him, to push him away because she couldn’t stand to betray her friends anymore. His rage was frightening but his retaliation was much worse. It wasn’t the kind of retaliation she had expected from him because he did nothing at all. Nothing. He just let her go, and just like that he was gone from her life. In his wake he’d left a space, a hole in her heart that she couldn’t fill with shopping and friends and family. She thought she could be strong and let him go too; forcing herself to sleep with Tyler and love Tyler like nothing had ever changed. He acted like nothing had changed too, and that burned more than his lack of retaliation did. “Hey everything alright?” Tyler asks as he slides his arm around her waist when she comes out of the girl’s bathroom. “I’m fine,” Caroline says once more because it’s what she always says these days. She wonders sometimes if she’s trying to convince them or herself. Tyler leads her into another dance and later that night she’s crowned prom queen with Tyler alongside her as her king. It was her perfect dream. “Graduation day!” Bonnie says cheerfully as she bursts through the front door of Caroline’s house early Friday morning with a bright smile on her face. Elena walks in behind her and the three best friends spend the morning getting ready for graduation. “I can’t believe it’s finally here!” Bonnie says excitedly over breakfast. “I know,” Elena says as she sips her orange juice, “finally free….have you decided what college you’re going to Caroline?” “No,” Caroline smiles faintly as she finishes her breakfast. Elena nods and exchanges glances with Bonnie worriedly like Caroline can’t see it and it makes her want to grit her teeth and yell at both of them. “Caroline…I know you’re under a lot of stress lately….I mean…you’ve been waiting for this day all your life….you planned a year in advance for this….a party and everything…I’m surprised…I would have expected you to be a little more….happier….about it,” Elena says and Caroline rolls her eyes and sighs, “I’m just tired…I didn’t sleep well.” She never does anymore. Graduation goes well and afterwards they have a big party at the Salvatore house. The music is loud and the house is crowded and everybody is laughing and having a good time. All of her friends are celebrating because they can finally relax and have fun. Caroline is sitting on the couch by the fireplace drinking from a plastic cup full of beer and Tyler is sitting next to her with his arm slung over her shoulder. There are moments when she wants to shrug him off of her but she doesn’t, keeping that perfect smile spread across her face while Matt tells them a really funny story. Caroline is drunk and she knows it, she can feel the way her body is relaxing under the effects of inebriation and so she stands, aching to get away from Tyler and out of the crowded house. She politely excuses herself and goes upstairs, hiding herself away in one of the guest bedrooms. She stands on the balcony and she stares down at the party goers out on the lawn, screaming and laughing and drinking beer. Tears are burning in her eyes because he isn’t here and he’ll never be here again. It was all her fault. Bonnie had found a way to trap Klaus’s soul in Rebekah’s body just as Tyler had planned before. Now the two originals were buried somewhere far away from here and Caroline would never see him again. Her friends had rallied together to destroy him and she just stood by and let them do it. This was her punishment. She would spend the rest of eternity mourning his loss and hating herself for running away from him like she did. He would haunt her until the end of time, his face and his eyes, his voice speaking to her softly in her dreams. He would torture her with his memory and never allow her to be happy. Tears were sliding down over her cheeks and she wiped them away furiously, unable to hold back the sobs that were rising up from her throat as she dropped to her knees and wept. “Caroline?” Tyler asks and she freezes in place where she is on the floor, frightened because she wouldn’t have an answer as to why she is crying. “Hey what happened?” Tyler asks so tenderly it makes her heart ache because she is weeping for a man who had caused Tyler pain. “Nothing…you know…I’ve just been depressed lately…I don’t know…” Caroline smiles through her tears as she wipes her face and stands. “Hey…come here…” Tyler says gently and pulls her into his arms though Caroline wishes he was someone else. The party is over and Caroline is lying on the couch by the fire downstairs, staring dully into the embers while Elena is giggling in the kitchen with Damon. She’d decided to make brownies at four in the morning on a whim so Damon stayed up to help her. Bonnie is passed out upstairs with Jeremy somewhere and Stefan had disappeared somewhere probably to get away from Damon and Elena. Caroline wasn’t sure what had happened to Tyler, who had been doing shots a couple hours ago and was probably passed out somewhere. She should get up and go find him, make sure he gets home ok but she doesn’t have it in her to get up at the moment. She is crying again and she knows it, the tears sliding down her cheeks and burning across her skin like fire. It was a powerful reminder of her betrayal as she stares into the embers, almost able to make out the color of his eyes staring back at her from the flames. “Hey,” Tyler says softly as he’s climbing over the arm of the couch and crawling towards her, her body lying across the couch under him as he hovers above her. In the firelight he looks strange, and for some reason he unnerves her. Tyler has never unnerved her before, and right now he was acting very odd. He smirks at her and bends down to kiss her, wiping away her tears with his thumb as he cups her face. “Tyler…” Caroline sighs when his hands begin to wander, “I’m just not really up to it right now…I’m sorry…I’m just really tired.” “Ok,” Tyler says with a nod and waits for her to shift aside to make room for him, sliding his body in behind hers on the couch and laying length wise with her. They lay there in silence as he’s stroking her hair, running his fingers through it gently and it’s soothing to her. For the first time in a long time Tyler is being helpful, and she closes her eyes to the feel of his hands in her hair. She dreams of him again, the man she’ll never escape even in her dreams. When she wakes it’s nearly six am according to the clock on the wall and Tyler is asleep behind her. She shifts against him and yawns, feeling his hands sliding across her waist as he wakes up. “Good Morning,” he murmurs against the back of her neck and presses a kiss against it lightly. His actions send a shiver down her spine because it is a haunting reminder Klaus. She stiffens at the thought and he doesn’t seem to notice as he continues, pressing kisses down her shoulders, his teeth sliding across her skin gently. Caroline can’t get away from him fast enough as she untangles herself from him and excuses herself to go and make coffee. Tyler was reminding her to much of Klaus in that moment and she couldn’t bear to think about him right then. The days turn into weeks and Caroline is applying for colleges. She holds of two different applications and sighs, deciding to send them both in and hope for the best. When she is done she goes over to Tyler’s house because she can’t stand the silence of her own. “I didn’t know you could paint…” Caroline says as she sits down in a large chair and watches Tyler scrutinize the canvas in front of him. “It’s a recent hobby,” he shrugs and she frowns because he’s never been that eloquent. “The guys are going down to the grill tonight to watch the game,” he chimes in moments later, the shift from eloquence to a lack thereof breathtaking, “I probably won’t be able to make that party tonight.” “It’s alright,” Caroline sighs, “I didn’t really want to go anyway.” College is a new experience for her as she gets ready for classes and packs up her room. Her Mom is crying downstairs because Caroline is leaving for college today, planning to live in a dorm room that is three hundred miles from home. Tyler is waiting outside and his packing her luggage into her car for her. Liz Forbes comes outside to watch, standing on the front porch with outstretched arms as Caroline returns from the car to give her a hug before leaving. Tyler opts to drive because he’s going to the same college she is and has already taken all of his things up to the dorm rooms already. The drive is long and filled with silence aside from the sound of the stereo. He reaches over to turn it down half way there and she glances at him curiously. “It’s great that the high school part is over now isn’t it?” Tyler grins at her and Caroline frowns, his words echoing Klaus’s. “Yeah,” she responds and shakes off the uneasy feeling she was having. “Hey,” he says and his hand is sliding up her thigh, rubbing in soothing circles, “everything is going to be alright.” “I know,” Caroline sighs, “I’m just going to miss home.” “Yeah,” Tyler grins, “Mystic Falls was interesting.” Caroline ignores what he says and leans her head against the window, drifting off to sleep. She dreams about him again, like every time she closes her eyes. When she wakes there on a freeway somewhere but she doesn’t know where. “Tyler…” Caroline asks groggily, “where are we?” “Almost there,” Tyler responds but the look on his face confuses her because it isn’t a look Tyler has ever used. “What’s going on?” she asks with a frown. “Easy love,” he says and those words make her freeze, his hand on her thigh warm and soothing as he picks up the pattern across her skin once more, “Just relax.” “Klaus…” Caroline says with shock, her heart skipping a beat as she realizes that this entire time he’d been tricking her. She’d been so deeply embedded in her grief and the dreams she’d been having he’d managed to walk right past her. Then she realized it. He had planned this all along. Caroline then realizes as she sits there in the car with him clearly not heading for the college that Tyler was locked inside Rebekah’s body buried somewhere. “No…” she breaths, horror filling her because this entire time it had been Klaus and he’d been so good at pretending to be Tyler that she hadn’t even seen it. “Tyler…” Caroline shakes her head in horror. “You really didn’t think I’d let him get away with it did you?” Klaus asks her and Caroline sits there staring at him with wide eyes. His hand is still sliding across her thigh and she tries to pull away only to have him grip her thigh and keep it in place. “Tyler…you switched bodies with Tyler…” Caroline breaths. Klaus grins at her slyly, “I always knew you were more than a pretty face.” The sad part was that Caroline should have seen it coming. She should have realized what Klaus would do but she didn’t. Part of her was grateful he was alive; overjoyed in knowing he hadn’t been locked away somewhere but in return she’d lost Tyler. She had no way of warning her friends as Klaus drove them to the airport. He had people load up all of her things and toss Tyler’s in a dumpster before leading her to his private jet. “What about Tyler’s body?” Caroline asks quietly while there on the jet flying towards England. “I’ll get rid of it when we meet up with the witch who’s waiting to put me back in my body,” Klaus tells her frankly as he sips from a glass of wine. A year from now Caroline wonders what ever happened to her friends. She’s lying in bed with her head on Klaus’s chest. A part of her relishes in this life with him and a part of her hates him. He destroyed Tyler’s body once he was back in his own, which was both heartbreak and relief for Caroline. Heartbreak to know Tyler was dead and relief to know that Tyler would no longer be trapped in a box with Rebekah. Klaus stirs and Caroline’s head slides off his chest and onto the pillow because she is half-asleep. She feels him sliding in between her legs and smiles into the kiss he presses against her lips in the darkness. When his cock slides into her she groans in satisfaction, his claws digging into her hips as he fucks her. A thousand years must have twisted his mind she thinks as she stares up into his dark eyes, wondering what he must have suffered. His family thought he was mad, his family hated and loved him in equal measure as Rebekah once put it. She knew it was wrong to love him, to twist her body against his and let him fuck her into the mattress as he did. He was like poison in her veins and he corrupted her sense of morality because she loved him. She was as twisted as he was in some ways, choosing to listen to her heart rather than her mind when she looked at him. He has done terrible things, and despite that she lets him touch her, lets him hold her in his arms and she finds that she could never go back to those days when she tried to choose the right path and ended up being haunted by him. If she was a monster for loving him then at least she wasn’t alone. “I’ve always loved you in red…” he breaths against her skin as the red silk sheets slid across her skin. Monsters stick together. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
