Chapter 3—Hide and Seek
As soon as my arms and legs were free I ran. I had to escape, I had to find a place to hide. I only had six hours and I didn’t know the island as well as Pan and the boys did. Pan, it had finally dawned on me what I was dealing with. It all made sense, the island was Neverland and my captor was Peter Pan, the boy from J.M. Barrie’s classic tale. He was real, and had apparently decided to stop growing up right at the height of puberty.
This is insane. I thought, but I kept running. I must be suffering from some kind of mental breakdown. I’m probably safe in a hospital somewhere right now. Even as I tried to convince myself that this was a dream I knew it wasn’t true. It all felt too real to be a dream.
Finally, after about 3 hours, I saw a mountain. It was small enough to climb quickly but I was sure there would be an opening that I could wedge myself into and hide.
I wasn’t quite to the top of the mountain, roughly 45 minutes to an hour later, when I saw exactly what I needed. A very small opening, just big enough for me to hide in. I got down on my stomach and wedged myself in. Perfect! No one could see the opening, unless you really looked hard.
I had about two hours left of my hiding time and decided to count them down. Unfortunately, all the running, the general excitement of the day, and the counting lulled me to sleep.
I woke up to the sound of footsteps outside of my hiding spot. How long had it been? It was afternoon when they released me and it was dark outside now. They were probably a couple of hours into their seeking. I heard Felix talking to a couple of other boys. I hoped my hiding spot was good enough.
“No, I don’t think she’s up here boys. We’ll go ahead and head back down.” I heard Felix say.
I breathed a small sigh of relief—but too soon. I felt hands grab my legs and pull me out of my stone alcove. The hands, I soon found out, belonged to Felix. He had probably known where I was since they got up there.
“Great, Pan will be pleased. Try not to struggle too much, girl, it’ll make my job easier.”
I didn’t like Felix. He seemed to be the most loyal to Pan and I knew from my history classes what loyalty to an evil dictator could do.
He held my arms behind me until we got to the bottom of the mountain. When Felix bent to get the rope to tie my arms I saw my opportunity. I caught Felix off guard and kneed him in the crotch. Once again, as I had been doing way too often today, I ran.
I didn’t know where I was going. The beach? I could possibly swim far enough away. That is if a shark didn’t eat me first. Of course, this was Neverland, so who knew what else was in the water. I had decided though, I would go back to where this nightmare began and try to escape.
I felt the sand underneath my bare feet, a welcome feeling after the jungle and the rocky mountain. I began to feel free and then for the second time in 24 hours ran into the solid, firm body of Peter Pan.
