“Hell no!! Fuck that!! We don’t need no god damn honky bitch screwing shit up for us!!” Daryl growled. He got up so fast from the dinner table that he almost knocked over Hershel’s 100 year old dining room chair. “I say we take her ass right back to the road where you found her and wish her the best of luck and hope the door hits her in the ass on the way out!! Im sick of this bleeding heart bull shit that all of y’all seem to be afflicted with. Am I the only zen one around here?!!”
At that very moment, Melanie entered the dining room and all eyes were suddenly on her. She had heard every single word that Daryl had said. She didn’t know who this guy was, but, on a first impression she thought this guy was a total ass hole. Did he have some kind of influence on the group? Was he in charge? Did he decide if she stayed or went? After all, it was Hershel’s farm wasn’t it?
She had to gain her composure and fast. She did NOT want to piss this guy off anymore than he already seemed to be. OK, she thought. One, two, three, breathe……
“I…uh..am sorry if I kept you all waiting. I slept longer than I meant to. I only woke up because of the smell of this delicious looking food.” Melanie thought that was the most polite thing for her to say and hopefully ease some of the tension out of the room.
“Im eatin the fuck outside…..This is all such bullshit…..Play house and dress up and whatever shit you want…Just leave me be” And with that snide remark Daryl bolted out of the house…He did however, manage to take some rolls off of the table in a napkin and march right out the front door with them in tow back to his tent.
“Did I do something wrong? I seem to have offended him, but I’m not sure how” Melanie just couldn’t figure out what was with this guy.
“Melanie, that’s Daryl. He is always like that. Some would say it is a bad case of constant PMS”. Carol said with a laugh and the other women Lori, Andrea, and Maggie all joined in.
“I have to say something to him. I can’t just have him hating me for no reason. I will be right back. Is his tent in the yard?” Melanie looked out the front window and could just barely make out his tent by the broken down wall in the field.
“He moved out there to get away from everyone. He likes his privacy and his space. He will come around…….eventually.”Carol said with a half hearted smile on her face. “Just let him work out whatever it is that he needs to work out. He just lost his brother not too long ago, so he is probably struggling with that. I hear they were close.”
“Still,” Melanie said, “I just have to say SOMETHING especially if im planning on sticking around here. I will be back in a few minutes.”
Melanie threw her boots on as quickly as she could and excused herself. Glenn walked through the front door just as she was going out. Probably coming inside to convince Maggie to sneak off with him again, she thought.
She walked the half mile across the dark field to where Daryl’s tent was. Carol was right. He was sitting there all alone. Skinning…what the hell is that? Squirrels? The guy eats squirrels? Ok, that is weird, she thought.
“Daryl…”….nothing….no response…he didn’t even look up. “Daryl!” she said louder. “DARYL!!!!!!” She yelled this time, startling him in the process.
“What the fuck is wrong with you? Why you hollerin at me? You want the Walkers to hear you? You got a death wish or something? Cause that is a great way to get what you want. Keep it up. I don’t think they heard you yet.” He leaned over in his chair and flung a bloodied piece of squirrel hide in her direction, barely missing her feet as it landed a few inches away from her.
“I came out here to apologize. Apparently something about me bothers you and for that I am sorry. I have no idea what I did or said that would make you hate the mere sight of me. But whatever it is, I can’t fix it unless you tell me. Carol said that you are not big on talking about feelings and I totally respect that. BUT, if someone has done something that bothers you, you need to tell them so that they can work it out. I don’t want anyone here to hate me. I like everyone and I am just getting to know them. Please don’t judge me until you know me a little better. Ok? Can we call a truce on the whole hating Melanie the god damn honky bitch? Please?” She looked into his eyes pleading with him to answer her..Or at least just say something. Anything.
“Don’t know what you ‘spect me to say….” was all he could muster.
Flustered and frustrated, Melanie went back up to the house and was welcomed with a piece of apple pie and a warm glass of milk.
But what she didn’t know was that Daryl HAD been paying attention to everything she said. He had been watching her sway back and forth on her feet when she was standing just a few feet from him. Feet that almost had gotten decorated by flung squirrel bits thanks to Dixon. He had to admit it. She was very graceful and light on her feet. In another lifetime he might have even admitted that she was beautiful, but this is not that lifetime and that is not something Daryl Dixon would ever say…..Or is it?
