Astiratu found himself standing in Bobby’s library. “You haven’t called for me for a while, what’s up?” the half angel looked at Bobby.
Bobby sighed. “I...”
“Come on, spit it out, cupcake, I haven’t got all night. My body just passed out in the kitchen, which I’m sure has everyone worried. They’ll want me to wake up sooner rather than later.”
“I need some information. You’re the biggest gun with the best contacts I know, okay?”
Astiratu nodded. “You need help, I see. Bobby, all you gotta do is say the magic word and tell me what you need.”
“The magic word?” Bobby shot him a glare.
“It starts with P.”
“No one ever gives me the stupid magic word!” Bobby shouted. “I haven’t been able to deal with my own shit because I’ve been there for everyone else, and I never get so much as a thank you!”
Astiratu sighed. “Me either. Thought it would be nice for a change. Whatever, what do you need?”
“Crowley won’t give my soul back. I’ve done everything I can think of.”
“Demon problems, I see. Well, since you did give it up to stop Armageddon...” Astiratu disappeared. He returned three hours later.
“You’re back,” Bobby looked surprised.
Astiratu rolled his eyes. “I’ve just been to hell for you, quite literally.”
“You went to hell?”
“How else did you want me to dig up dirt on a demon?”
“There’s something in your hair.”
Astiratu pulled out something black and slimy. “Huh, missed some demon guts. Anyhow, summon the bastard.”
Bobby did the summoning ritual and Crowley stood before them. “I see you don’t give up easily,” Crowley said to Bobby. “You pulled the big gun. Won’t work I’m afraid. He’s good, but can’t be much worse than what I’ve been dealing with.”
“Ah, yes, you went from public enemy number one to king of hell,” Astiratu smirked. “Lucky you, you’re welcome.”
“You’ve been doing some digging I see.”
“Lots of it.” Astiratu made a cloth bag appear and dumped bones out onto a table. “Recognize these?”
Crowley’s eyes widened. “You found my bones. That’s just a myth you know.”
“Is it? Then I guess I don’t need these lying around. I’ll just go throw them in the fireplace.”
“You bastard!” Crowley growled. “You...”
“Oh, yes, a demon just hurt my poor little feelings. Yes, I’m a sneaky slick bastard when my people are screwed with. It’s like you’ve never met me. Now, my friend here gets his soul back but keeps his legs, or you’re toast. Either way I win, so...”
“Fine!” Crowley made a little motion with his hand. “His soul is his again. Now, give me my bones!”
Astiratu gave him a ‘go ahead’ motion. “Pleasure doing business with you. And just so you know, that was just the easiest way to grab you by the short ones.”
Crowley grabbed his bones and disappeared. Bobby turned to the half angel. “Thanks.”
“You’re welcome. Now, I have a hungry body to get back to. You interrupted dinner.”
Liam’s eyes opened and he was lying on the couch with Dean sitting with his head in his lap. “Babe, you okay?”
“I think so. What happened?”
“We had just sat down to dinner when you face planted. How do you feel?”
“Hungry, but otherwise okay.”
Dean’s phone rang and he looked at it. “Wonder what Bobby wants this late. Hey, Bobby, what’s up?”
“I know you’ve probably been worried, but he’s fine. I just needed to borrow a little angel juice for a personal problem.”
“Okay. A little warning would’ve been nice, but did you get everything sorted out?”
“Yeah. Be glad he’s on our side. I wouldn’t suggest screwing with him ever.”
“Don’t intend to, unless you mean in the biblical sense. That I’ll do every chance I get. Catch you later. Bye.”
“What did Bobby want?” Liam asked.
“Nothing important. Natalie wrapped up your spaghetti and meatballs. You make a mean meatball by the way. Why don’t we go warm it up for you so you can eat. You probably passed out from low blood sugar and eating will help.”
Liam nodded and followed Dean out to the kitchen.
A few days later Natalie had a migraine so she sent Sam to take John for his very first dentist appointment and recruited Liam to do the grocery shopping. Dean decided to go with him. “Kinda trippy isn’t it?” Dean commented as they walked down the aisles.
“Why do you say that?” Liam asked while he looked for lemon juice.
“We’re grocery shopping. This is like a chore for most people, but I… We don’t do this. We just eat at diners and burger joints, or we used to.”
Liam shrugged. “I’ve been on a few grocery trips, and never really gave it much thought. But change can be a good thing, right?”
“I’m certainly enjoying it. I’ve got a man, a nephew, and a home. All very good things.”
They got everything home and Sam was already back and reading to John on the couch. “How was the dentist?” Dean asked his brother.
“Fine,” Sam answered. “The teeth he has are fine. The guy had me sit with him in my lap and John was pretty chill abut the experience.”
“I’ve noticed that about him,” Dean said. “As long as one of the four of us is around and we’re good he’s good. If one of us is not around he has a nuclear meltdown.”
Sam shrugged. “The books and stuff say it’s pretty normal at his age. Something about his world is expanding but he needs a safe place. Mommy and daddy are that safe place, though since you and Liam also played major rolls in his care since he was born you’re included in his world.”
Dean leaned down and tickled John. “You feel safe around me, huh little guy? Yeah, you know me and your Uncle Liam would never let anything happen to you either.”
“Oh, and Samuel called about another job.”
“I’m listening.”
“In Limestone, Illinois there have been a lot of disappearances lately.”
“Okay,” Dean nodded. “You’ve got my attention. When do you want to leave?”
“Maybe tomorrow. Natalie is still in bed not feeling good and someone has to watch John.” Sam sighed and ran his fingers through John’s hair. “There was a time we caught wind of a case and headed out right away.”
Dean sat down beside his brother. “Like Liam and I were saying in the grocery store, things are changing, and it’s good. You have a major responsibility as a parent, and you just gotta learn to find balance.”
“That’s what Samuel pretty much said when I was talking to him about it.”
Dean raised an eyebrow. “You talked to Samuel about John?”
“Well, gee, Dean, he only raised our mother. Why wouldn’t I seek the advice of someone who’s been there before? This parent thing only scares the hell out of me. I wanted to avoid the experience all together, but that didn’t work out too well.”
“Sorry, it’s just that the guy was dead, and now he isn’t, and that makes me a little wary I guess.”
Sam sighed. “I get that. It makes me wonder too.”
Liam came out from putting the groceries away and Dean got up and kissed him tenderly. “What was that for?” Liam smiled at him.
“That was just for being you.” Then he leaned down and aimed for John’s cheek, but John caught on and kissed his lips. “Okay then,” Dean blinked.
Sam shrugged and chuckled. “Monkey see, monkey do. He’s only thirteen months old, I wouldn’t read much into it. At least he didn’t bite you.”
Liam shrugged. “My brother kissed me on the lips, and our mother kissed him on the lips. We just considered it affection. I don’t know how, but American culture has somehow made lips sexual. Anyway, Natalie still isn’t feeling well, so I guess I have to decide what to make for dinner. Sam, why don’t you go up to her? When I’m not feeling well I like comforted. We’re home now, we can watch the rugrat.”
“That’s not a half bad idea,” Sam said as he handed John to Liam.
“You wanna help me make dinner?” Liam smiled at John. John nodded and babbled. “Okay, you can be my special little helper.”
When Liam finished he called everyone down and they got to taste his famous chicken parmesan. “I should let you cook more often,” Natalie mused.
“My man of many talents,” Dean smiled and kissed his lover’s cheek.
They packed and left in the morning, visiting the police station when they arrived. “Seven girls in seven days,” Sam sighed when he came out. “The latest was just called in.”
“Then that’s where we start,” Dean said as he put the car into gear.
They went to her home and talked to her father, who let them go look through her room. The whole room had a gothic vibe and vampire posters were everywhere. “Holy crap,” Liam looked around. “I think I might know what we’re dealing with now.”
“You think?” Dean asked.
“If I were still a vampire I could feed on this girl blindfolded.”
Sam searched around and found her laptop. “Let's see what we can see. Alright.” The laptop made a screaming noise that made them all jump and a picture of a vampire appeared on the screen. “Just gotta crack her password...”
“Try Pattinson,” Liam suggested.
Sam shrugged and typed it in. “It worked,” he looked surprised. “How did you…?”
“I read the Twilight books and saw the movies. They were um, interesting.”
“I could think of a few other words,” Dean mumbled.
“I’m sure you could, but hey, I could kind of relate. I mean, I didn’t live off animals because yuk… but I at least refrained from killing.”
Sam started poking around. “Well, her inbox is full, from some guy claiming to be a vampire.”
“A real vampire?” Dean raised an eyebrow.
Liam shot him a look. “Like I told you, seriously easy prey here. I never used the internet myself, but I used to go to vampire clubs all the time. Hell, I went to one back home the first time we were there.”
Dean frowned. “You fed from the guy you slept with, didn’t you?”
“He practically had an orgasm when I cut him, so, yeah. Come on, that was three and half years ago. Who wants to go hunting when idiots are throwing themselves at you?”
“Yeah,” Sam agreed. “I mean, these chicks are just throwing themselves at you. All you gotta do is, I dunno. Write bad poetry. Wow. This guy wanted to meet her at a place called The Black Rose.”
Sam called Samuel and found out that a blood bank truck got robbed as well. “I gave this one to you since your friend there used to be a vampire,” Samuel told Sam. “Maybe he knows something we don’t.”
Liam bit his lip in thought and leaned back against the car. “I was more of a loner, but if I had to guess, they turned the missing girls and the blood bags are for them. When you’re first turned the thirst is indescribable.”
They went to The Black Rose and started scoping the place out. “Oh yeah, target rich environment,” Liam nodded as they sat at the bar. “So glad I don’t have to worry about that anymore.”
They each spotted a possible target and followed them. Liam approached his target and discreetly brushed his silver knife up against the guys arm while he was making out with the girl. The only reaction was a shiver at the cold metal. “What the...” the guy looked at the knife with wide eyes.
“Pathetic,” Liam rolled his eyes. “Get out of here and find a better hobby.”
He left to go find Dean, and arrived when Sam did just in time to see a long haired man holding a bloody wrist to Dean’s mouth. Liam charged with his knife drawn and the vampire evaded him easily. He sighed and looked down to Dean who was convulsing on the ground. “What do we do?” Sam looked to Liam.
“Pig blood,” Liam answered. “Go get some. Lots of it! Go! Meet me back at the motel with at least a gallon.”
Liam picked Dean up and stroked his hair. “I know...” he whispered softly. “Let’s get you out of this alley.”
He helped Dean back to the motel while he watched the process helplessly. “I can hear your heart,” Dean breathed. “And my god, I’m so thirsty! I...” He sat up and eyed Liam like he was prime rib.
Liam breathed a sigh of relief when Sam came back with a bucket of blood. “That is pig, right?” Liam asked.
“Pretty sure,” Sam nodded. “Got it from a butcher shop.”
“I can’t tell anymore, but as long as it isn’t human.” He grabbed a plastic cup from beside the coffee machine and dipped it in the blood to fill it. He handed the cup to Dean. “Okay, that isn’t gonna taste good, but it’ll make you feel better.”
Dean took a sip and scrunched his features. “Tastes like ass. You however, smell like… yum...”
“Suck it up and drink the pig blood,” Liam ordered. “It’ll tide the extreme thirst until we can figure out what to do.”
Sam called Samuel and told him what happened. “Has he fed?” Samuel asked.
“Liam told me to get pig blood. I went to a butcher shop. I think what I got was pig. Whatever it is he’s going after it like a man that’s been in the desert a few days without water.”
“Good. Your former vampire knows his shit. Whatever you do make sure he does not ingest human blood and I will be there as soon as I can with the cure.”
Dean had finished with the blood in the bucket, most of it gone, and he was holding his ears with his hands. “How did you do it?” he looked to Liam.
“Practice,” Liam said. “It helped that there were no cars or trains or anything when I was turned. I was taken to a quiet abandoned barn and could get used to things gradually. Believe me, I know the super senses are a lot to take in. Sam, whatever you do, don’t get too near. The animal blood is tofu. We’re a T-bone steak.”
“Liam, how can you be so calm?” Dean asked.
Liam shrugged. “What good is panicking going to do? Samuel has a cure, so we just have to keep you interested in tofu for a little while. Believe me, been there, done that, it really sucks.”
When Samuel arrived Dean was in the fetal position on the bed. “All he’s had is pig, right?” Samuel asked Sam and Liam.
Liam nodded. “He hasn’t left this room.”
“I think I’d rather be back in hell,” Dean whimpered and looked up to his grandfather with a pained expression. “I can hear their blood, and I want it so bad. There’s something inside me that wants to drain them dry, but I can’t hurt them. It’s like...”
“An internal civil war,” Liam finished the sentence. “But as long as you keep yourself under control we can fix this. For the love of god nobody bleed.”
Samuel set his bags down. “I’ve got everything except for blood of the fang that turned him.”
“I can get it,” Dean sat up. “I mean, I’m one of them now, right? The nest is two miles east of town, I can smell it.”
Samuel nodded. “Good luck, son.”
Dean left and Liam counted to fifteen before picking up his knife and following. “What are you doing?” Sam asked.
“Following him, and my training,” Liam answered as he walked out the door.
Liam followed Dean all the way to the nest without Dean realizing it. He made his way inside, slaughtering the guards with his knife.
Dean stood with Boris, the one who had turned him. Boris eyed the doorway, then turned to Dean looking suspicious. “Now how did the hunter find us so fast?”
Dean shrugged. “No idea.”
Liam entered the main room, his bloody knife gripped firmly in his hand. “My, you’re a pretty one too,” Boris watched him move. “Very pretty. Maybe with a little convincing you’ll join us.”
Liam snorted. “Been there, done that. No thank you. Besides, you and what army? I kinda made a mess out there.” Boris growled and started opening the cages with the girls in them. “Dean, get him. Leave these bitches to me.”
“But you’re way outnumbered you idiot!” Dean yelled at him.
“I’ve got a sharp object, I’m good. Go!”
Dean sighed and chased after Boris. Liam followed as soon as all the vampires were dead, finding Dean standing over a headless Boris. “Awesome, we’re golden,” Liam panted.
Dean frowned. “Except that your heart is pounding and that little civil war just got turned up a few notches.”
“You can fight it,” Liam insisted as he pulled a syringe out and took some blood from Boris’ body. “Come on, let’s get you back to normal.”
Sam and Samuel were waiting for them when they returned. Liam showed them the blood. “We got it, and I got to take some anger out on some vampires, so everything is all good.”
“You should see the crazy bitch with a sharp object,” Dean mused. “He massacred the entire nest.”
“Very nice,” Samuel looked impressed as he took the blood and squirted it into a mug of pink liquid and handed it to Dean. “Drink up.”
“Cheers,” Dean gave a small smile and drank it down. Nothing happened for a moment, then he wretched and began vomiting blood.
“Is it working?” Sam asked.
“Either that or he's dying,” Samuel answered.
Dean fell to the floor, eyes wide as he writhed, clutching his chest. After a few minutes he was still, staring up at the ceiling and panting heavily. Liam reached down to put two fingers on his neck. “I think we’re good.”
Sam and Liam helped Dean onto the bed. “I have a whole new appreciation for you,” Dean looked to Liam. “What you did is no easy task. I wanted to slaughter the town, and when I was gushing blood from that hell hound attack you, I mean, you almost, but you kept yourself in check. You were around us twenty four seven for days and never… I don’t know how you did it.”
Liam smiled and kissed Dean’s cheek. “Centuries of practice. You were only a vampire for a few hours. Given time I think you could’ve developed the self control, but I like you better human.”
“The problem is bigger than we realized,” Dean looked around the room. “They’re recruiting. I think someone is giving them orders. I think someone is building an army.”
“Well, that’s comforting,” Samuel sighed.
“Guess I better practice with the sharp objects,” Liam said.
Dean chuckled. “I think you’re good. Thing is, they weren’t afraid of you. That bothers me a little. Boris was pretty sure I’d get to see you inside out. Naturally, since I know you, I knew better, but...”
“Yeah, scary thought,” Liam agreed. “But all we can do is take things one problem at a time. One nest was destroyed by yours truly, so we’ll count that as a victory. For now, I think you need to rest, and then we need to go home. And thank you for bringing the cure, Samuel.”
Samuel nodded. “Anything for my grandsons. You three just know that I am here for you.”
“Yeah,” Dean nodded. “And I’m sorry if I seem a little guarded, just, given the circumstances...”
“I understand,” Samuel assured him. “I find it very strange myself. But, it is what it is. Before I go, you got any pictures of that little one?”
“Yeah,” Sam nodded and pulled a little photo album out of his bag. “Probably seems silly, but I carry these with me,” he showed Samuel the pictures.
“Not silly at all,” Samuel smiled at them. “I always kept a picture of your mother with me. It’s extra incentive to get back home safe.”
“It is,” Sam agreed. “Not that I do him much good.”
“Sam, we talked about this,” Samuel shot him a look. “That precious little one needs his daddy. Whether you intended to or not, you made him, and he loves you.”
“I love him too,” Sam smiled a little at the pictures.
