I wake in pain, but then again that's nothing new, what is new is the strange rocking sensation and the sound of waves. I keep my eyes closed for a few moments so that I can get used to the strange movement. Before I can open them, the soft press of lips against mine shocks me enough to get a truly visceral reaction.
What in the hell do you think you are doing?" I growl as I release my hold on Killian's throat. "One minute you are pummeling me into the ground and the next you are kissing me, you can understand if I am a little confused. Not to mention the fact that you appear to have kidnapped me. You should believe me when I tell you that kidnapping tends to bring out the worst in me, I have some history that you are unaware of. That is probably where the dream, the memory came from. Now that you are aware that you have not killed me I should probably be going, I am sure that you do not want me here. If you did you would have come to find me in the woods, you are a good man. I would not be surprised to discover that the only reason that I am here is because your friends wanted me away from the boy. I see the way that you look at Emma, I heard you calling for her in the woods. You have feelings for her and my presence is only making things more complicated for you. I would leave if it were just about you and I but we both know that I cannot do that. I have to stay here, at least until I can bring my son back, I know that does not make any sense to you."
"Henry was right," Killian sounds as if he's choking on his words as he points at the bed that I have just vacated. "True love's kiss, lass, it summoned the book, the one that you were telling him about. I'm not going to pretend that this is going to be easy, love. You are right, I do have feelings for Emma only now I find out that the Father of her child is none other than our son. Even before that I told him that I would back off, to give thyem a chance to be a family. None of that changes the way that I feel for her but our past hasn't changed the way that I feel for you either. I need you to tell me about The Dark Curse, you cursed your family. You need to explain yourself, Raven, you seperated me from our son and ended up leaving him with your brother."
"Everything that you need to know is in that book," I sigh, gesturing at the tome. "Henry figured that out, that is why he wanted me to find it so desperately, you can either read it or I can just tell you. You have a decision to make, perhaps you should discuss it with your friends. I meant it when I said that I do not want to put any pressure on you, I am sorry that you were put in this position. You know where to find me once you have made your decision. If you decide that you do not want to come I would ask that you give the book to each new person that wakes up. I knew that you would be the first to wake, Soul Link's do that but the others will all wake. I do not know who will come next, but for your sake I hope that it will be Neal, I think you need him now."
"I will come to you by sundown," Killian vows and I know without a doubt that he will do as he promised. "Whatever I decide, lass, I will come to you by sundown. I owe you that much, love, whatever I find out in that book is not going to change that, I may not remember everything but I know that you gave me a lot. I'm just not sure what it is. All I know is that I owe you and if I decide that we are done the least I can do is look you in the eye and tell you that. Even when I was a villian I was still a gentleman, there are some things that never change. You have work to do, the people on your list are not the only ones who have been knocked out by your spell. There are others, it might be a good idea for you to find out who those people are."
"I had a feeling that might happen," I sigh, scrubbing my hand through my hair. "I created the curse, that is how I was able to reverse it and save the town but I never actually cast it. That list contained the people that I knew without a shadow of a doubt would have been effected. I doubted that they were the only people who would be effected, the curse was a punishment. It had nothing to do with you, any of you, it was about me, I never knew for sure but I thought that your family might have been effected too. It is more than likely that those are the people who are still sleeping. Finding out who they are might be easier said than done. I only knew who you and the others were because I was able to watch you but that was not the case for the others. I will not be able to recognize them just by looking at them, look at how much you have changed. I might be able to glean a little from who they are now but even that can be changed drastically."
"The fairies are taking care of those that are still sleeping," Killian tells me. "I can have Mr. Smee escort you, lass, I'm not sure that a woman such as yourself should be wandering around town alone. You don't know where you're going, love, and you're not exactly popular. A lot of the people around here think that you got rid of Pan because he was in your way. That putting all those people to sleep was your plan all along, they won't believe me. I was a villian for too long but not everyone who's asleep is in the same situation, once the right people start waking up you will be trusted. I just don't have enough capital to lend you any."
I nod my acceptance of his words and turn to leave, almost running into a woman with short black hair. She holds out her hand to me in a clear invitation and I loook back to Killian who nods. I don't take the woman's hand, instead gesturing for her to lead the way as we ascend a narrow staircase. We emerge on the deck of a ship and she quickly leads me across the dock and begins to head into town. It doesn't take me long to realize that she is leading me towards a church. I can tell that she wants to say something to me but whatever it is, is weighing on her, she stares at the ground. She fiddles with her own hands but despite her nervousness her steps never waver. I may not be popular in this town but she clearly is, that much is clear by the people that we pass in the street. They all stare at us and some of them mutter under their breaths to their companions. Not a single one of them makes a move to intercept us, none of them even try to follow us. If I had been in their position I would be following the stranger from a discreet distance but there's only one person who actually is. That person is Rumplestiltskin.
"Whatever it is that you are desperately not trying to say you may as well come out with it," I tell the woman at my side. "I can tell that you are keeping something to yourself, there really is no need. Actually, I could use the distraction, Rumplestiltskin is following us, you have likely gathered that we have some history. He betrayed me and I am not quite ready to forgive him yet. I am the first to admit that I have a short temper and when it comes to him it is shorter than most. I could use a distraction, so you should not be worried about upsetting me. I mean no offence but we are not family, there is not much that you could say to wound me the way that he has. You have my word that I will not lose my temper, so go ahead, tell me what is on your mind. Preferably before I do something to him that I might regret in the future, he may forgive me but the witnesses may not."
"Do you know why Hook took you to The Jolly Roger last night?" the woman blurts out. "When he knocked you out you started to dream. He said that you were projecting, we could see what you were seeing like a hologram on the wall. He got you out of there as soon as he could but it took him a little while to recover, we saw some of it. Oh, don't worry, David grabbed Henry and took him outside before the picture tuned in."
"Remind me to thank this David for that," I grunt, furious with myself that I lost control so completely. "I never would have forgiven myself if the little one had seen that, I know what he would have seen. I want you to know that what you saw was not a dream, it was a memory. If you had seen an actual dream it would have been very different but I do not dream any more. I was cursed, now my dreams are nothing more than reliving my worst memories, always displayed so that I have to watch myself. The projection is new, at least as far as I am aware. It has been a long time since anyone has been in a position to tell me but more importantly I try to avoid sleep as much as possible. The dream that you saw was actually relatively tame, there are plenty of things that you could have seen. Most of them are a whole lot worse, the times when sexual partners were brought into my cell were actually the easiest. Is that why you came to the ship?" I look over at the woman by my side and she nods lightly, still staring at the ground.
"The things that we saw," she speaks quietly, as if afraid that someone might overhear us, as if her words are a deadly secret. "That was beyond anything that I could have imagined and you say that it could easily have been much worse. You never fought, we could feel that you wanted to. We could feel your anger, the rage, how much you wanted to tear them apart, you relished in the fantasy of killing them. Yet you never raised a finger to stop them, Emma's been freaking out. She saw what I did but she didn't understand it, not the way that I do, you were protecting them, the people who were cursed. You love them, they are your family and you were willing to endure anything to protect them. At first I thought that you were a villian, I don't mean to be rude but you look like one. Then when I saw those dreams I thought that you were a victim of some terrible darkness. Now I think that I finally understand the truth, you are a hero and then Emma told me about the conversation in the treehouse. The thing that put your family in danger. The thing that forced you to protect them, it was the weapon that you spoke of wasn't it?"
"Yes," I agree easily, everything that she has guessed is correct and there's no point in keeping it a secret any longer. "I refused to give my captor the location of the weapon and so she threatened my family. I created the curse and managed to convince her that it would be the best punishment. She could hurt me more by forcing them to forget me, by seperating them. I convinced her that their death's would simply be her taking the easiest path, seeing as I would never give her the information that she sought. I never did, even after a thousand years in her hands. They got good lives in exchange for my good behaviour, after that I never tried to escape. I have no idea how I even got out of there, I just woke up in the woods outside town one day. It was a couple of days before I reversed the curse, she must be absolutely furious."
"She could come looking for you," my companion points out and fear laces her words. "This is bad, very, very bad, I saw you when you first got here, the way that you interacted with Gold. He was afraid of you, genuinely afraid, I've never seen The Dark One afraid of anything. This woman was able to keep you prisoner for a thousand years, if she comes here we have no way of defeating her. You are broken, you may have been a warrior once but you aren't any more. I don't mean to hurt you but you have to face the fact that you are physically incapable of being the woman that I saw in Hook's drawings. You were a warrior, you rode dragons. Yesterday I watched you sit there and let a man beat you into unconsciousness and you wouldn't be able to ride a horse right now, let alone a dragon. If she finds you then everyone here will be in danger."
We reach the church as she finishes speaking and she looks around fervently. She looks back at me with pleading eyes and places a single finger over her lips in a hushing motion. I understand that she doesn't want me to say anything about my captor until she's had some time to figure things out. I nod easily, her request is one that I can honour. I may not know this woman but I can tell that she's well respected, a leader, one whom her people choose to follow. She knows the people of this town far better than I do, she knows what they can handle. The only thing that she doesn't know is that the woman she is so afraid of can't track me. She won't be able to find any of us until everyone who was under her curse has woken and if necessary I can slow the process.
