Disclaimer: I do not own Star Trek nor do I benefit financially in any way. I take no credit for these characters, I'm just playing with them, seeking a happy ending to a muse that sat upon my shoulder and murmured "what if...." |
“But? “ Tilly had interjected looking back and forth “it would have come in on a secure Starfleet channel, right?” she had said looking at the chief who simply nodded. “so, then who sent it?” she mused aloud as was her habit, “….and why send it to her, unless it was because she wasn’t Starfleet, she had no access to…well, to anything, no way to confirm…,”
“...a weak link” Saru immediately posed.
“That” Pike said “is the real question isn’t it, cause I have the worst feeling that she either wasn’t where the logs reported her being or she wasn’t there by choice.”
Rising to his feet, his eyebrows still furrowed and little frown lines around his mouth he started to head towards his ready room stating “I need to talk to her, now. Chief bring her to my ready room please”
“Ahhhhhh….can’t do that sir…” the chief had responded shaking her head, one hand on her spine as she winced.
“Oh course not, you need to be in medical yourself, thank you for bringing this to my attention.” He’d interrupted already in motion. “I will get her myself he said switching directions and heading for the lift only to have the chief interrupt him with,
“You can’t do that either, sir….”
She’d spoken very softly, almost gently. All the fire had gone out of her voice as if she was bracing to tell him something he didn’t want to hear.
Pike stopped dead in his tracks, a feeling of looming doom suddenly settling over the bridge. He turned his head to look at the solemn expression on his chief engineers face.
“She’s in medical sir.” the chief had continued in that same gentle voice. “She’s still is or was unconscious when I left to come inform you that you were working under false assumptions.”
“NO, not the gorn” he murmured, his memory flashing to Marie, to the horror of not knowing if she was dead or alive and the terror of finding she’d been infected “but, she was okay, there was no sign…” he’d trailed off as the repercussions slammed home.
“No, not the gorn sir,” the chief replied.
Chris could feel himself go weak with a relief that was short lived as the chief took a breath and said very simply and candidly, with a sad smile as she knew the blow that she was about to bestow on him was one that would set him reeling for a long time. He was a good man, but there had been a hell of a screw up and there was simply nothing she could do to make it any easier. They simply had to fight through the tempest and come through the other side.
“She was cleaning those damn tubes,” she started as Pike had closed his eyes and tipped his head towards the ceiling an expression of regret clear in his features.
“ and, she fell….” Causing Pikes head to snap round his eyes to fix on the chief his mouth forming a silent no as the chief continued as quickly as she could.
“No one, no one found her till after the start of the next shift. She’d been laying there, hurt, for the best part of 6 hours, sir.” The chief had finished. “She has a broken arm sir, in several places, along with several broken ribs and bruised kidneys, some internal bleeding too. The broken ribs pierced her lung causing it to collapse and the blow to her head has caused a significant concussion. She, ahhhh, she wont be leaving medlalb for a while, sir.” The chief paused as she was fairly certain that the captain had not intended the harm, but it had been caused none the less.
“Her bio-scans showed…abuse, resulting in further investigations into her well-being.” Pikes jaw had dropped open, his head shaking, ….”a federation ship” he had started to say, “she is on a federation ship how could she be abused?” he had interrupted, his eyes wide in horror as the chief continued..
“Her serotonin levels are through the ceiling meaning shes not sleeping and was... is completely exhausted. In other words she is in no fit state to work, sir, yet she was still up in that tube and on the duty rooster. She’s malnourished with considerable gastric distress as the rations shes been assigned, and confirmed to have been assigned for weeks now sir, are barely edible. They contain many elements unfit for human consumption, while on the surface would seem to comply with nutritional needs. Her entire immune system is in overdrive due to the deliberately introduced allergen, via her clothing. Again, confirmed as its what she was wearing when she was brought to sick bay.” The chief paused for a moment as the captain reached out to grab the support rail, in a tailspin.
She continued “It promoted a painful, blistering and irritating rash sir, think poison ivy or poison oak on steroids. It was left untreated as the computer refused all her requests for medical attention. Nor any altered garment as its programming insisted that this was the appropriate “prisoner garb” along with reminding her daily her alternative was the prison colony. This was while working her double or more often, triple shifts based on the logs….”the chief had paused to stretch her back again while the Captain leaned forward both arms rigid as he braced himself on the railing.
“This cant be an accident sir, the commander’s codes were the ones used and cant be over-ridden.” The chief paused “I know the Tal are upset. I know the alliance is important..but sir…shes been, shes been tortured, over what???? What the hell did she do sir? I just can’t believe that kid who was willing to die to protect me could have done something that terrible, on purpose.” The chief had insisted shaking her head. “She just couldn’t of sir.”
The silence hung in the air while the crew looked to their Captain. He slowly raised his head and said very softly with barely controlled rage. “Find it”
