Without a moment’s hesitation, Justin lunged at Henley, tackling him to the ground before the detective’s bullet had even begun to echo through the air. Erin, trembling and overwhelmed by terror, buried herself in the blankets, her screams piercing the chaos.
"You filth, you'll answer for your crimes!" Justin growled, unleashing a storm of fists upon Henley’s face, indifferent to the crimson spray erupting from his broken nose, as a throng of others surged into the fray.
Suddenly, strong arms encircled him, attempting to pull him away from his target. "Let me go!" he bellowed, struggling against his father’s restraint. “Justin, enough!” Voight commanded, desperate to curb his son’s ferocity.
“Release me!” Justin cried, fighting vehemently against his father’s hold. “I want to make him pay for what he’s done!” His voice crackled with rage and pain. “He drugged and violated Erin!” he shouted, his heart pounding with a tempest of emotion.
Voight cast a quick look at the bed where his female detective lay curled up like a frightened creature, her arms bound tightly behind her.
He could hear her muted whimpers of fear, catching a glimpse of her casting a timid look upwards before burying her face once more into the soft refuge of the pillows—shocked by the imposing presence of several men in the room, her vulnerability accentuated by her complete nudity.
The sergeant observed as Al cautiously advanced toward Erin, who let out a startled yelp, instinctively retreating—a heart-wrenching testament to how far the spirited brunette had been pushed into a corner of fear.
“Take it easy, Lindsay, it’s just me,” Al murmured softly, halting his steps to prevent further distress for the female detective. “It’s alright; can I lend you a hand?” His soothing tone wove a thread of calm through the storm of her panic.
A tempest of rage swirled within Al as he noticed the bruises blooming across Erin’s skin, the bite marks marrying her body like grim shadows, oozing a crimson testament to her suffering. The seasoned detective felt a deep-seated fury for their failure to arrive in time to shield her from such horrors.
Erin nodded slowly, a wave of shame washing over her for harboring fear towards her own team. “I’m so sorry…” she sobbed as Al approached, shedding his jacket like a protective shield to envelop her. “Hey, no need for apologies,” he murmured softly, as he untangled the ropes binding her wrists, helping restore the flow of blood.
Justin ceased his struggle against his father, torn between instinct and caution. He longed to rush to Erin but hesitated, unwilling to add to her distress with the throngs of people surrounding her.
He watched as Erin wrapped her arms tightly around Al's neck, her anguished cries echoing like thunder. The seasoned detective cradled her gently, swaying her with the soothing rhythm of safety. “It’s alright, you’re safe now,” he whispered tenderly. “We’ve got you.”
“Get Henley out of here—now!” Voight commanded Adam and Jay, both momentarily frozen in their tracks. “NOW!” the sergeant’s voice cut through the air, spurring them into action as they hurriedly whisked Henley from the room.
Justin approached the bed tentatively, his mind swirling in confusion. Frustration welled within him as he considered the delay in reaching Erin; if only the team had unraveled the mystery sooner, he wouldn’t be confronted with the sight of Erin exposed and suffering.
He felt a lump in his throat as his gaze dropped to the extent of her injuries, recoiling at the sight of blood trickling down her legs when Al assisted her from the bed. Each wince from Erin echoed in his heart, amplifying the growing fury he felt at witnessing the woman he cared for in such torment.
His chest tightened with a mix of anger and helplessness as he took in the array of bruises and bite marks adorning Erin's sun-kissed skin. His attention was drawn to her face, where an emerging bruise marred her cheek, and blood stained her chin from a split lip.
“Take it easy,” Al murmured, signaling to Antonio to help maneuver Erin out of the room, a task complicated by the way Erin flinched at Antonio's presence.
“Its just Tony, Erin,” Al reassured her softly, coaxing her to relax as she nodded, her expression laced with regret as she met Antonio’s gentle smile, who carefully lifted her.
“Everything will be alright, Linds,” Antonio murmured softly, wincing as crimson rivulets streaked down the brunette’s legs and pooled on his arms, a bitter pang of regret gnawing at him for not arriving sooner. “I feel nauseous…” Erin moaned, pressing her face into the safety of Antonio’s chest.
Justin bit his lip, wishing it had been him carrying Erin from the chaos, but he didn’t want to further unsettle her. “We need to go; Erin has to get to the hospital,” he said, guiding her toward the exit.
Stepping outside, Justin noticed an ambulance already on-site, and he spotted Brett and Stella anxiously awaiting their arrival. “Oh my God!” Stella gasped, her eyes widening as they fell upon Erin.
Fists clenched tightly, Justin watched as Jay maneuvered Henley into the back of a police car, flanked by the other two suspects. He couldn’t help but notice the stormy glares on Kim and Roman’s faces as they slid the door shut behind Henley.
Erin clung tightly to Antonio's jacket as he delicately placed her on a stretcher that Brett and Stella maneuvered into position. "It's okay, Erin," Stella softly reassured, assisting the anxious brunette in settling in. In a swift motion, Brett draped a blanket around Erin, creating a shield against the curious gazes that had her nerves on edge.
"We’ll follow closely behind," Voight called out, hurrying toward his truck but pausing when he heard Erin's voice pierce the air, calling for Justin.
“Justin!” she called, yearning to catch sight of the familiar figure she had known for years, and Justin, responding to her summons, turned as Brett and Stella guided her into the back of the ambulance.
Justin glanced at his father, who nodded with resolve. "Go to her," Voight instructed, before jumping into the truck to tail the ambulance.
“Justin,” Erin’s voice rang out again, tinged with urgency, prompting Justin to swiftly leap inside the ambulance just before Brett closed the doors, sealing their worlds together for what lay ahead.
Justin settled next to Erin, extending his hand as an invitation rather than a demand. “I’m here, Erin,” he murmured softly, a whisper of a smile gracing his lips as the brunette intertwined her fingers with his.
“What brings you here?” Erin inquired, attempting to distract herself from the lingering shadows of the past. Each movement was a reminder of her discomfort; her legs ached and her mind swirled in a haze from the nitrous oxide.
Feeling the familiar tug of her thoughts, Justin gently tightened his grip on her hand, aware that she needed a diversion. “I’ve got a brief escape from the army, so I chose to return home to be with you,” he said.
“I wanted to catch you off guard, but not like this,” he breathed, closing his eyes to stave off the rising tide of tears.
Erin lifted her hand to his cheek, her voice a fragile echo, “I’m… so… happy… you’re… here…” she spluttered, weariness creeping into her gaze.
“I missed you.” Her hand slipped from his, surrendering to sleep as she finally embraced the safety of his presence.
Justin’s brow furrowed as he cast a worried glance at Erin, then at Stella, who was poised to exit the ambulance as Brett eased to a halt outside Med.
Brett swung open the rear doors, aiding Stella in maneuvering Erin’s stretcher into the hospital, with Justin flanking them.
Voight and the rest of the team were already present, along with Jay’s brother, Will Halstead, and the attentive faces of April, Natalie, Rhodes, and Maggie.
“How long has she been unconscious?” Maggie inquired, her heart aching at the sight of the once-feisty detective covered only by a blanket and Al's jacket.
“Just a few minutes, I believe she was holding on until she felt safe enough to let sleep take her,” Stella replied gently.
Maggie nodded, expertly guiding Erin past the waiting detectives. As Justin attempted to follow, Rhodes halted him. “You need to stay out here,” he instructed.
“I can’t,” Justin countered fiercely, refusing to let Erin face this ordeal alone. “She needs someone by her side,” he added, his throat constricting as he gazed at Erin’s restful figure.
Justin's gaze met April’s, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. “Don’t worry, Justin,” she assured him, her voice steady like a calming tide.
“I’ll be right by her side every step of the way, I swear nothing will befall Erin while we’re here.” The young Voight nodded, a flicker of hope igniting in his heart.
“Alright, I suppose… just ensure she’s alright, she was… she was…” his voice faltered, the weight of the unspeakable heavy on his tongue, the horror unfolding before him.
“We’re aware, Jay filled us in on everything.” Will spoke softly, striving to soothe Justin’s frayed nerves. “She’s got you and all of us to support her through this.” He pledged before following the others into the chaotic embrace of the emergency room.
