Veronica reached Cheryl's bedroom and hurried to the bed, shaking the redhead awake. Cheryl groaned, "Veronica, do you know what time it is?!" She got up to see Veronica shaking Josie.
"We have to leave, now!" Veronica said. Josie woke up with a groan, "Why?" she asked, staring at her friend. Veronica quickly checked the window to see outside.
"I don't like this. I think someone is here," Veronica said, looking at the other two. "What are you talking about? There's no one here besides us and Nana," Cheryl replied.
Veronica sighed in frustration, "No, I know someone is here, outside the house! I heard something fall when I got a glass of water." She shook her head, walked back to the bed, and pulled Josie up.
Cheryl got up from the bed. "Are you sure you didn't just imagine it?" she asked, watching Veronica get Josie her shoes. "No, because I remember the rake leaning against the wall, and now it's against the trash can," the raven-haired teen replied.
"Are you-" Josie started to ask but stopped when the TV and the hallway light, which Veronica had left on in her rush, suddenly turned off. "Okay, I guess you're right," Josie said, quickly putting on her shoes.
Cheryl put on her shoes as fast as she could. "Let's get out of here!" Veronica demanded, peeking out of the room to see if anything was coming up the stairs.
"But what about my Nana?" Cheryl asked, watching the younger girl step out of the room and then duck back in. "There's no time," Veronica said, quickly finding her phone on the nightstand.
Cheryl didn't like leaving her Nana Rose with this stranger. "I'm sure whoever is inside the house now won't even notice her," Veronica said hopefully, "I mean, she's always quiet."
"Can we just go?" Josie asked, jumping when she heard footsteps heading to the room. "Let's sneak out the window. Whoever this is won't find it easy to get us," Veronica said, checking her phone's battery.
Veronica bit her lip. The battery was only at 40%. "Damn, hopefully it'll last until we can call for help." She put the phone in her pocket and headed to the window.
Josie and Cheryl followed her. "Josie, you go first, and then Cheryl!" Veronica said, keeping an eye on the door as a dark shadow got closer to the bedroom, lit by the moonlight.
The dark-skinned teen nodded and quickly climbed out the window, finding footholds in the bricks. "Now you, Cheryl," Veronica said, pushing the redhead through the window.
Cheryl climbed down the wall, unaware that someone else was waiting for them outside. Josie let out a frightened scream, causing the redhead to turn and see her friend in the arms of a man wearing a dark hoodie.
Veronica was about to climb down when she heard Josie's scream and froze. Cheryl yelled up to her, "Veronica, stay where you are!" The redhead warned, causing the younger teen to back up.
The raven-haired girl started to back away from the window. She couldn't just leave Josie and Cheryl with the bad guy. She moved towards the window to climb through and help her friends, but froze when a rough hand grabbed her arm.
Veronica turned her head and saw a hooded figure behind her. "Come with me, little girl, and nobody gets hurt!" the man said, gripping her arm tightly.
"No way am I going with you!" Veronica responded, turning and stepping hard on his foot to make him let go. She then elbowed him in the face, forcing him backward.
The hooded figure growled, stumbling back from the foot stomp and elbow. Holding his face, he paused for a moment before running after Veronica. He texted Mitch to get the other two in the van, as Mitch had told him he'd found them.
Veronica used the flashlight on her phone to see as she ran from the figure, who had recovered from her attack.
"Get back here, little girl!" Tim demanded, racing after her through the house. He saw her not far away and watched her run into another room. He followed, almost bumping into a chair the girl had put in the middle of the floor to slow him down.
Tim shook his head. "Pretty smart for a shrimp," he said, kicking the chair out of the way. He went into the room Veronica had entered and looked around for her.
Veronica swallowed hard. Reaching an extra room, she hid in a closet with her phone. She quickly turned off the flashlight and forced herself to stay quiet while texting Archie.
Her heart beat fast as she typed, until she heard the hooded man's voice. "Little girl, come out willingly," he growled, stepping toward where he saw light flickering from the closet.
"If you come out, your friends will be unharmed," Tim said, trying to make her give in. "And my patience is running out."
Veronica closed her eyes to stay calm. She was halfway through a text to Archie, but stopped when she heard what the man said. She didn't want Josie or Cheryl to get hurt, so she closed her messages and put her phone back in her pocket.
"You promise?" Veronica asked, stepping outside. She forced herself to stay calm and strong, like her father had taught her. "You don't know who I am, do you?" Veronica asked, walking toward him.
Tim shrugged. "Do I care? I only care about getting paid." He held out his hand. "Phone, now!" he ordered. Veronica hesitantly placed her phone in his hand, and he snatched it.
Veronica kept herself from flinching as she watched him put her phone in his pocket. "You won't be needing this anytime soon," Tim said, moving closer to Veronica, who tried not to step away.
" Now let's go." Tim said as he gripped Veronica arm, " And do not make any noise." He said as his grip tightened around her arm, " You understand?" He demanded.
Veronica bit her lip as he tightened his grip on her arm, his nails digging into her soft skin. "Do you understand me?" he hissed, glaring at her.
"Yes..." Veronica whispered, biting back the pain as he released his grip, leaving marks on her arm. "Good, now let's go," he said, pushing her out of the room.
Veronica walked out without a word, wondering if she could get him to talk. "So who is paying you to kidnap three high school girls?" she asked, glancing behind her.
"What did I tell you about talking?" Tim asked as they headed downstairs, his hand against her back in case she tried to run. Veronica shrugged. "You did, but there isn't anyone else in this house," she lied as they stepped outside to a waiting dark van.
Tim shook his head. "You'll see in a few minutes." He said, opening the sliding door. "Now get in," he added, pushing her into the truck.
Veronica sighed, knowing she wouldn't get an answer. She climbed into the van to find a frightened Josie and a furious Cheryl, who looked ready to fight.
The raven-haired girl flinched as Tim tied her hands behind her back. "Now you three enjoy the ride," Tim said, brushing his hand against Veronica's cheek before slamming the door. Veronica flinched at the sound.
"What are we going to do?" Josie whispered, frightened. "I don't know, Josie," Veronica replied. "The guy took my phone so we can't call for help."
Veronica sighed softly, thinking about what would happen. She promised to keep the other two safe. She had a feeling this was someone seeking revenge on her father.
