Monk didn't explain why he wanted them to go back to the Donahue's home, all he said was that he 'had a hunch.' That he thought the Donahue's could help them.
Randy and Stottlemeyer knew to follow Monk's hunches.
The amount of times they had owed solving a case to Monk because of his skills and hunches that they knew better than to question him.
Sottlemeyer knocked on the door of the Donohue's waiting for them to answer as he looked back to Monk with his hands on his sides.
"What exactly do you think they could help us with? I thought you said they weren't involved with the case."
"They're not." Monk said as he kept his eyes on the door, "But I hope they can answer a question that might just help us find Nunn."
At this Stottlemeyer felt his confusion mount on itself. He really needed to stop trying to figure out how Monk thought.
Hearing the door opening Leland turned and saw Mrs. Donahue at the door.
"Captain Stottlemeyer..." Mrs. Donahue seemed shocked to see them again so soon.
"Mrs. Donahue. Sorry to disturb you again so soon. But my colleague had a few more questions to ask you." Stottlemeyer tried to ease her fears of seeing them so soon.
"I swear Captain, we have nothing to do with that poor woman's death." Mrs. Donahue's face and tone almost begging them to believe her.
"We believe you Mrs. Donahue. I don't believe you were involved with what happened to Ms. Herrera. I'm actually curious if you ever had the chance to meet her, or see her just before you purchased the house?" Monk's hands motioning the house.
Leland and Randy exchanged a look as Mrs. Donahue looked extremely uncomfortable.
"You just said you don't think we had anything to do with what happened to her. Why would you ask me if I ever met her?" Mrs. Donahue asked as she kept her eyes locked with Monk's.
"Mrs. Donahue...please...I need to know if you noticed a ring on her finger." Monk pleaded with the now defensive woman.
The instant Monk explained himself Mrs. Donahue instantly seemed to relax.
"You mean her engagement ring?" Mrs. Donahue's eyebrows furrowed as the question implied they weren't implicated her or her husband for murder.
"Yes." Monk nodded as excitement that he might have a lead that could really be followed.
"So you did meet her." The captain said in an accusatory emphasis.
"She was at the closing of the house. She brought us an extra set of keys to the house." Mrs Donahue explained defensively.
Stottlemeyer's mouth fell and turned towards Mrs. Donahue. "Why did you mention this before?"
"You didn't ask." She said simply.
"Mrs. Donahue please...was she with a man? Or did she come alone?" Monk had to ask, knowing that if they angered her they would lose the opportunity to find out critical information.
"She was alone." Mrs. Donahue nodded once in a physical confirmation to her answer.
"Are you sure it was an engagement ring?" Stottlemeyer wanted to know how she remembered that detail.
Mrs. Donahue smiled then. "If there is one thing women notice Captain...it's a woman's diamond engagement ring. Especially when it's a Tiffany ring."
Monk exchanged a look with Leland and then looked back to Mrs. Donahue. "How do you know it was a Tiffany ring?"
"She said it was the reason she couldn't be at the closing earlier. She had to pick up the ring from Tiffany's because it was being resized." Mrs. Donahue crossed her arms and brought up both of her shoulders in a shrug.
And that's when Monk knew they found a way to possibly find Nunn.
Leland smiled as he realized what Monk had wanted to find out here. The missing ring. Tiffany's would have records of Herrera picking up the ring and possibly who bought the ring.
"Thank you Mrs. Donahue. You've provided valuable information." Stottlemeyer nodded and quickly grabbed his cellphone and began walking back towards the car.
Randy had no idea why both Monk and the Captain were smiling as they all moved back to the car, leaving a still bewildered Mrs. Donahue in the doorway staring after them.
"Why are we leaving?" Randy asked as the Captain finally had someone pick up on the other end.
"Dave. Hey buddy it's Leland. Yeah...yeah...I know. We definitely need to catch a game together. Yeah...listen...Dave - is your wife still a manager at Tiffany's? That's great. Do you think she'd help me out with something?" Leland asked, then smiled.
Monk smiled as Leland gave him a nod, both getting into the car.
"That's great. What's the address to the store?"
Randy didn't know what was going on still, but he waited as the captain grabbed a napkin and a pen and began writing down an address.
"Yeah...yeah I got it. Hey Dave thanks! Yeah...yeah...you too buddy. Yeah...I'll talk to you soon. Ok...bye." Leland's smile couldn't stop his smile as he turned off his phone.
The second he was off the phone Leland shook his head. "Monk you're a genius."
"Why is he a genius?" Randy asked as the captain hand him the napkin with the address on it.
"Because if that ring is from Tiffany's we have the possibility of finding out who bought the ring. Credit card information...an address..." Stottlemeyer explained with a smirk.
"If Nunn was involved with Carmen he might have slipped up and used his address or phone number when he purchased the ring." Monk explained why the ring could lead to finding out if Nunn really had been the fiancé.
Randy's eyes widened as he finally understood why what they just found out was so important.
Stottlemeyer poked at Randy's hand that still held the napkin. "Dave's wife Jessica happens to be a manager at Tiffany's. We need to get there before she leave's for the day. She's off tomorrow and isn't scheduled for work until next week."
Randy nodded his head and quickly entered the address into his phone. Turning the car on he informed the Captain, "It's not that far. We should be there in twenty minutes."
Monk let out a sigh as he closed his eyes.
As distracted as he had been, he felt like he had finally taken a step towards finding out what happened to his wife.
And after all these years of wondering and suffering, asking himself why she had been targeted...he might finally be able to get answers.
But would he be able to handle those answers? He really didn't know.
