CHAPTER XXXXII
Julian watched the doors hiss shut. What was wrong with Garak? He went to the door, and touched the pad, opening it. He looked at Garak's door which was shut. The Cardassian had given every signal of interest to him. He sighed, turning back to his new room. He wandered over to the bed, dumping the contents of his bag on it. He tossed the bag into a nearby chair and quickly put his clothes in a set of wall drawers. He flipped through the pads and put them away in the nightstand after picking out the one he was looking for, Male Cardassian Specific Anatomy and Physiology. Why was he being kicked out of the bedroom? He was being friendly to the Cardassian. He had been prepared to allow Garak to have his way with him. He was even looking forward to it. If it felt marginally as good as the pleasure he had received since his arrival, it would be one of the most amazing sexual experiences, full of new creative ideas. He rested on his side in the bed, propping his head up on his hand and clicking on the pad to access the files. “Computer, brighten the lights by ten percent,” he said, curling under the blankets and pushing all the triangular pillows on his bed into a pile to lean on. He sighed reading through the basic biochemistry, anatomy, and physiology of the Cardassian reproductive system. It was fairly similar to most humanoid systems, though there were several key differences. Committing the diagrams to memory, he clicked down reading over common surgeries done. Most seemed to be preferred, either by the Military or rumored to be required by the Obsidian Order. He shifted a little, looking toward where he knew Garak would be stretched out. He returned to his reading. --a common surgery undertaken by males in the Obsidian Order and Central Command. The purpose of the operation is to make an operative or an officer more able to deal with separation from his mate mentally and increase the amount of time that they can be comfortably and safely separated. It involves the removal of the naknara glands. His mind raced, recalling the hormones produced by the glands. The naknara glands secreted several hormones key to the productive functioning of a male Cardassian's mating drive. Shurkran, when expressed in certain areas of the brain, worked as a kind of truth serum promoting honesty from the male to his sexual partner. Karmak'kys, a form of the Karmak hormone family, promoted monogamy and facilitated the the taking and guarding of a mate. Neither of the hormones could be artificially created or simulated. With the perfection of the techniques necessary for their removal, the production of several hormones decreases to a negligible level. With this decrease, the mating drives forcing monogamy are decreased by eighty-nine percent. While this has increased the number of half breeds born, it also increases the efficiency of soldiers by seventy-five point three percent. Soldiers and Operatives do not require rotation at half the frequency while being able to maintain a proper family within the Union. It carries a side effect of hyper-aggression in sixty-one point seven percent. In one point three percent, hyper-xenosexual tendencies have been observed. The procedure is known to reverse itself if not competently conducted. If the practitioner failed in removing every naknara gland or leaves even a tiny piece behind, they will regenerate. The use of stem cells manipulated to form the naknara glands can be surgically reintroduced, though it may cause some complications. It is possible to chemically alter the action of the naknara glands, though it is only ten percent as effective as surgical alteration. He shifted up setting the pad to the side. If Garak had had this procedure done, and it seemed likely he had...his mind was racing, making connections as he accessed the images of the very few records he had been able to collect on Garak. Now, having seen the hormone structure, he was certain that shurkran had been present in Garak's system in excessive amounts since he had come to the past. He had even noticed it on occasions in the future. Karmak'kys had also been present at a dangerous level during several of his scans in the future. “Lights,” he said, tucking the blankets around him and staring at the door. A slight aching pull made his stomach hurt as he lay there. Had the procedure reversed itself? No scar tissue had been present around the naknara glands which were found in Garak's abdomen. The only internal scar tissue he had seen was in the post central gyrus where the wire had been inserted. He shifted, turning his head away from the door. Stubborn Cardassian. Garak was being so strange. But if he could not get a current scan, it would be impossible. The text had been a little vague on describing the behavior of males entering the mate search state. The only thing it really described was the desire to impassion a mate, whatever that entailed. From what he knew of Cardassians from his experience primarily with Garak and his choice of novels, it seemed that discussion, whether argument or discussion, was considered the highest form of interesting a mate. Arguments that verged on the point of being subtly insulting seemed to be the most flattering. “Lights,” he said, sitting up. He picked up the pad over male Cardassian anatomy. He scanned down to where he had left off. “You have to have something helpful in here.” He called up a search within the pad's information, looking for any descriptions of behavior of males entering the mating set of mind. He rolled onto his other side, facing away from the door. The ache in his stomach was beginning to make him a little nauseous. He shifted to his back, leaning on the pillows and taking a deep breath, cutting his eyes briefly toward the door. The pad beeped a moment later, announcing that the search had been successful in isolating the data he wanted. He shifted, taking a pillow and placing it on his lap, thinking about how nice sleeping in Garak's arms had been the past week or so. He placed the pad on his pillow and clicked down, reading slowly. Rantalav is a rare mental condition associated with the naknara and vakram glands. A male goes into a state of rage that can be induced either by the murder of his mate or by another attempting to claim the mate. Rantalav is an extreme state of mind caused by the release of chemicals that double a Cardassian's strength and increase the rate at which his brain processes information and reads situations, seeming to give him a sense of near precognition. This mental condition is rare. It is only witnessed in point seven percent of the population. This part of the population has a slightly different brain structure. For further details, see Rantalav neuro-chemistry diagrams here. He shifted. Had Garak been in that state? That would mean that Garak had chosen him for a mate, but he had never seen any indication that Garak had felt hostility toward any of his female companions, Melora, Leeta, his none-too-subtle interest in Jadzia, or—well, he had been nasty to Ezri, but there had been many circumstances beyond that going on, and he had not shown any sexual interest in her at that point. But he had only mentioned Ezri to this version of Garak, none of his other lady friends. The Cardassian had even seemed okay with her, despite his avoiding her once he became publicly involved with the petite Trill. He returned to the pad. The only person who can call a Cardassian from Rantalav is his mate. The mate will be listened to and heard, even through the rage. His attack can be halted by his mate's gentility. If the mate does not stop Rantalav, the male will destroy those who wronged him. Whatever Garak had been going through on Bajor when he attacked those Bajorans, he had stopped when arms wrapped around him and a voice whispered by his ear. He rubbed his stomach, wishing he could relax his nerves. He clicked through the information, searching for how mates were chosen. Nothing in this pad indicated how, and none of the novels he and Garak had shared over the seven years they spent on the station together had said. He stood up and wandered to the replicator. “Delavian hot chocolate.” A cup of hot chocolate in a clear glass cup with a decorative metal handle appeared. He picked it up and lifted it up, taking a deep whiff of the liquid and a small sip. He paced the room, thinking about everything that had happened. What had that vision been about? If it was the wormhole aliens, it was entirely possible that they were telling him something. He did not have to believe they were gods. But they were atemporal beings. If he had been sent here to this time for a reason, there might be something that he was supposed to do. He wandered about faster in a circle, trying to calm his mind. If he was Garak's mate, or if Garak had chosen him, however that happened...why would he push him away? It was true that Garak had a vengeful temper. But Garak had always seemed to calm for him. He shifted remembering the near physical illness he had felt when Odo called him to Garak's shop after the Klingons attacked him nearly four years ago. He set his drink down on the table and wrapped his arms around himself. The pad gave no information about so many aspects of Cardassian mating behaviors, but those were more sociological than physiological data. The books mostly tended to have statements along the lines of 'They took their mate as their heart's commanded.' He would have to talk to Garak. He had been prepared to be with Garak sexually. But what would that mean? What did claiming mean? What did he mean to Garak now? What would he mean afterward? Garak was his dearest friend. He loved him, but what was mating? Was it like a marriage? He wandered to the small communication computer on coffee table. If only he could talk to Tskara, she could surely help him with some of these complicated events. Having lived with Cardassians for so long would surely have allowed her an understanding of concepts that they seemed so reluctant to talk about in a public media. He sighed, leaving the room. He would try walking around the garden to relax his mind. He paused at Garak's door and leaned his ear against it. He could hear restless footsteps and heavy breathing. He put his hand against the wall panel but did not press the button. He sighed, dropping his hand to his side. He did not really know why he had been exiled from their shared bed. Was it because Garak needed alone time? Or was it because the Cardassian thought he wanted alone time? Well, he wouldn't know till he pressed the button. He took a deep breath and pressed the button. ~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~*~-~-~While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
