He couldn't find it.
The six fingered bastard had hidden his safehouse so well that he couldn't find where the son of a bitch had kept all of his 'insurance' against Biderbeck.
He was in trouble.
Real trouble.
When he heard at the station that Stottlemeyer and Monk had gone to speak to the owner's of Carmen Herrera's old home…he knew in the pit of his stomach that they would find something.
Now he couldn't find a way to make sure whatever linked Nunn to Biderbeck was destroyed. Not like the fat bastard didn't deserve every minute behind bars with all the crap that he had ordered done over the years for him to give a damn about him…but the man paid way too well and had just about every important official in his pocket.
That and he'd be killed or thrown into a deep hole in a prison.
He needed to distract them.
He needed something big.
After hearing the conversation with Sharona and Natalie through the bathroom door…he knew one thing that would cripple Adrian Monk to keep him far away from any kind of incriminating evidence.
One way or another, Ivan Nikolaev had to stop Adrian Monk from solving the murder of Carmen Herrera.
Dialing a number into his phone he spoke quickly, not noticing a detective walking into the room.
When he disconnected the call and turned he found a face that he had not expected to see.
"Detective Christie…I thought you were working that murder near St. Mark's."
"Needed to pick up some files at the lab….didn't know you knew how to speek Russian Officer Night." Christie said as he gave a small smile, his danger meter spiking when the man in front of him returned it.
"Yeah… family is originally from there. Came over when I was a kid. Still use it when speaking to family." John put away his phone. "You speak Russian?"
"Heh…not a lick! My mom was Russian though…hearing you brought me back to when I was a kid." Joe Christie said with a smile, "Hey…you still seeing Natalie?"
It had been big news around the precinct. Anything that revolved around Adrian Monk and his assistant Natalie was instant news. The fact that Adrian didn't like Night was also common knowledge.
So watching Officer John Night had become something he did out of loyalty and friendship to Monk.
If Adrian didn't like him, Joe was gonna keep tabs on him.
"Ah…yeah…yeah. Everyone seems to know about that huh? Everyone keeps asking if I'm treating her right." John laughed and Joe followed.
"Well are yah?" Joe asked trying to act good naturedly with a huge smile plastered across his face, looking at John as if he were a pal, trying not to let it show that he knew Monk was right about John.
"Of course I am detective!" John laughed, though his eyes held no form of merriment in them, " Whole precinct would probably kill me if I hurt her."
"Yeah well...Natalie's family to us you know. Can't let anything happen to her or Monk would fall apart, and we can't have that!"
Maybe it was the way his eyes finally sparkled, but Joe knew in that moment he had said something to make this guy happy.
"No we can't. Would you...excuse me...I need to call my cousin back. I forgot to tell him something." With a little nod towards Christie, John began to walk away from the Detective...hyper aware of the man staring after him.
Joe had a feeling that something wasn't right. Watching Officer Night walk away a strange sensation overtook him.
"JOE! Where the hell have you been?! We have to be across town in 20 minutes!"
Christie didn't look to his partner, but kept his eyes on Night. Something was off...and he didn't like it.
He didn't like it one bit.
Sharona had a lot of questions.
But she knew she couldn't ask them.
Of course...she actually COULD if she had the stomach for it.
But as they grew closer to Natalie's home Sharona knew she had very few minutes to actually ask them.
"So ah...how long have you and Adrian been...you know...together?"
Natalie felt herself blush. "Um...we ah...we haven't really..."
Not finding the words to say that she and Adrian had never discussed a relationship...let alone the whole 'it never happened' thing which at this point seemed moot.
"Waitwaitwait...are you tryin' to tell me that...that Adrian...Adrian Monk has been...doin'...that...with you...and you two aren't together?"
Natalie grimaced as she kept her eyes on the road and couldn't seem to find the courage to face her piercing blue eyes.
She knew that Sharona wasn't going to leave it just there, so she took a few seconds to take a few breaths and face the music. After all...she loved Adrian 'like a brother.'
Her exact words. Which meant she wasn't going to let this matter go.
"It...kind of just happened...it...we had never..."
"Natalie...we're talking about a germaphobic man..." Sharona's one eyebrow was arched heavily.
"I jumped his bones!" Natalie finally blurted causing Sharona's mouth to drop, "I didn't mean for it to happen! It just happened! I forced myself on him!"
The hyperventilating after saying the words made Sharona immediately try and calm Natalie down. Worrying she might black out while driving.
"Hey!Hey!Natalie you need to calm down! Look...I'm not gonna judge yah! And if it's one thing we both know...Adrian most definitely would have stopped you if he didn't feel the same about you! NOONE can make Adrian do what he doesn't want to. YOU.. know that Natalie!" Sharona tried to make Natalie calm down and see reason.
It almost worked.
"He wanted to pretend it never happened..." Natalie said as tears came to her eyes. Feeling the emotions bubble up she knew she couldn't drive through the tears and immediately pulled over.
The second the car was parked Natalie began to break down again.
Lowering her head she began to let the tears come and the heaving in of breath making her sound in agony.
Sharona let out a huge sigh as she felt Natalie's misery down in her own bones, then reached over the console and hugged Natalie as if she had known Natalie a lifetime and was comforting her sister.
"Hey...hey...what's going on in that head of yours?" Sharona asked as she realized something else was making Natalie act this way.
It took a few seconds for Natalie to stop crying. Sniffling to stop her nose from running, she murmured some words that Sharona didn't understand.
"Natalie...I didn't hear you."
"I can't lose him." Natalie said with more force. Sniffling she looked into Sharona's eyes.
Sharona pulled back and looked at the sad sight of Natalie Teeger crying. "You're not gonna lose him."
"Sharona...he's Adrian Monk! He can barely function..." Natalie was about to start going off again when Sharona stopped her dead with a quip.
"Apparently he functions like every man on the planet!"
And with that...both women burst into laughter. All of the heartache and sadness becoming laughs as Sharona and Natalie felt the tension lift suddenly.
"Seriously Natalie...I think...I think you have to be a saint. If Adrian is being intimate with you...it's beyond incredible. It's a damn miracle! Honestly..." Sharona had tears in her own eyes, "You did something for him that no other person had been able to do. You got him out of his protective bubble...three times!"
The last two words said with both eye brows raised and a smile.
Natalie laughed, and looked away from Sharona as her mind continued to torment her. "But it's...it's more than just...physical...for me." Slowly Natalie looked back at Sharona.
Sharona looked at Natalie and knew what she was saying. And it scared her too.
The four letter "L" word that she knew Natalie wanted to say.
"I know." Sharona said as she rubbed Natalie's shoulder. Natalie could see the compassion in Sharona's eyes, and felt some kind of relief that she didn't need to say what she felt out loud.
Natalie let out a huge sigh, "I should have known the first day I met him. I kept comparing him to Mitch. I'd never done that...with anyone else." Another sniffle and Natalie turned her head to stare back out the windshield.
"Lately he's been getting closer to Julie. And I realized...I realized the way she spoke to him... he's the only dad she's known since she was twelve. He's been a constant for her. And I didn't...I didn't notice. I just thought..." Natalie stopped as she let out another huge sigh, " I didn't think I'd ever feel like this again."
Sharona just stared at Natalie, not saying anything for quite some time as Natalie thought things over in her own mind.
Many things passed through Sharona's thoughts...and in the end only one thought persisted in her head.
She couldn't leave. Leaving Adrian and Natalie like this was beyond a bad idea.
Benji had already made his stance known that he wouldn't budge until he knew Adrian was alright...and from what Natalie had admitted...that wasn't going to happen any time soon. Adrian didn't just need her...Natalie was a complete mess.
Natalie sniffled a little bit more and Sharona grimaced, reaching into the center console and pulling out a napkin and handed it to Natalie.
Natalie didn't see the irony of being handed what was essentially a wipe, instead blowing her nose and wiping away the few tears that had clung to her eyes.
"Maybe I should drive." Sharona suggested with a little grin.
Natalie laughed but nodded her head before turning and continuing to nod.
"Ok." Natalie said.
Sharona gave her a smile.
The universe seemed to want her to be in Adrian Monk's life no matter how hard she tried to keep away.
Truth be told...she had been worried about him all of these years.
What the hell could she do. She loved the man...like a brother! And by default that now meant she cared about this woman.
Natalie Teeger.
Which now made Natalie family. It was like she had another sister.
Sharona rolled her eyes at herself. Everything made sense then. Of course Natalie had been driving her insane. Especially with the type of family they formed.
"Ok! Hop out and switch seats with me."
Not a minute later they had switched places and Sharona gripped the steering wheel and gave a side glance to Natalie.
"If you start fussing like Adrian while I drive, I'm tossing you out!" And without giving Natalie a chance to respond, she pulled out onto the street.
